Top Ten Games to Buy at Spiel Essen 2026 | Spiel Buyers Guide - Best Games to Buy
Transcript
Hello and welcome to board stupia. My name is Wayne. I'm Matt and welcome back to the spielacular spielacular 2026 where we talk all things spiel Essen including today's video which is a very exciting one. It's our buyer guide.
Yes. Which game should we buy
which we we will be spending money on?
Yeah. It's literally our shopping list that we've done. We're going to share with you guys exactly this is our top 10 games to buy at
Essent. And if you want to follow us in all this spectacular season cuz we're going to talk more about the most anticipated one, the hidden gem one and some personal picks,
the mega guy that should be already out right now so you can follow all the stuff. We're going to do live coverage during the day. So every evening I'm going to go back to the hotel and do the edit until 2:00 in the morning just for you guys. So hit the subscribe button. Exactly. It's the least you could do.
And then let's spend some money.
Yeah.
Just to reiterate the point we've made, we are literally putting our money where our mouths are. Uh these are the games we are going to be buying or in some cases have already bought
and we already bought that. They just some of them are Kickstarter. They just been delivered and we already spent the money. But this is going to be your first occasion to buy this game. So all of the games I talking about here are basically Essen
releases
releases or very close to to Essen releases. Some of them have been released I don't know yesterday. So it's it's very close but Essen is where you can actually find them. Uh and I want to start with uh one from the guys at the Villa
always with a few games every year.
Yes. And they got a very few interesting one that I'm I'm going to I'm going to get. The one that really for me picked the my interest is Shuendo. We already spoke about Shuendo a few a few months ago if you follow me.
If you follow the the channel. Uh so basically what what the game is uh you are farmers in Japan. What else? That's it for me. I was already sold Japan sold on this
money
and what you're trying to to to do is expand your farms outside the boundaries of the of the forest around um and how you do this that there's a very cool mechanism where you got uh kind of like a push your luck elements at the start of each round. Each player is going to have their own deck of card that you can upgrade throughout the the game. And basically at the start you flipping cards hopefully not going bust. And going bust is when you find the little demons icons, the yo-kai. You see the yo-kai? Uh anyway, the little goblin spirits of the of the forest that you are not making happy. So they they're going to make your art um life hard. If you don't bust, then you go another couple of phases where you can actually buy more cards and replace the cards the the weaker cards from your deck. You can expand your farm. You can recruit more more personnel to to your farm. Uh and uh if you go busted very similar in um on quacks, uh you're not going to be able to do all these action. You can only do one of those action. So you don't want to get bust. So, you want to buy uh different cards, but the more powerful card will have more uh demons on there. So, it's it's going to be easier to um
It sounds like uh it sounds like a a more complex version of living forest, especially with the card play. So, you're playing cards and then you don't. So, it kind of a combination of that quacks, which sounds great to me.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sounds very interesting. Uh another things wise this game is really interesting. One of the designer is Simony Luchani.
Yeah. He's doing some guitar. Uh so uh Simony Luchani is uh it it's one of our favorite. It was every my favorite uh we one of the best game that went completely under the radar last year that was in Edstone. I still think it's a fantastic game that went very under the radar. This the other game that is got out this year is Entropy. Uh but Shendo uh it's a smaller game. It's more like with this push push your luck and that building sounds really interesting. If you like Japan, the artworks and everything looks pretty cool. So, yeah. Shendo. For the next one, we got uh we're going a little bit into more of a heavier
Yeah, heavier stuff. Uh this is a gamer that um that we were lucky to had a very close look at UK GE uh when it was um for just for for demo. So, we we had a very nice look and we were really interested. We're talking about
Prague Unseen. Prague unseen is set in kind of a mythical uh sort of Prague from Czech Republic back in the 19th century. It's based around sort of the beasts and creatures and legends of the Czech Republic. Kind of steampunk steampunk kind of atmosphere which is really fun. Sort of. You've got golems and things like that. What's really interesting about this game is it has this kind of interconnected quadrants of the of the city of Prague with each one uh sort of doing different effects uh and having different interactions uh and kind of almost mini games uh that will connect to the other games.
What this game also does, interestingly, which I really like, is it's a nice combination of worker placement with different types of workers, right? You can get different effects depending on what worker you send to the different quadrants. um and some area majority elements as well. So, love a bit of that. Um it's just some really nice stuff here.
It's got a very cool things on how you actually move your workers on the on the board because uh at the start the section they the section the four quadrants or mini games or whatever you want to call it. They are they're going to be locked in. You can build bridges in between between the in between them to to move them around. Of course, you build stuff, getting more things. Uh, and then it's um it's such a like it looked so interesting and so cohesive in in the entire experience.
We had an absolutely wonderful sort of walkthrough uh with one of their demo team at UK Games Expo and it sounds absolutely fantastic. This is by the team at Albi has done some interesting stuff this year and this is the one that I'm most excited about from that team. Yeah, they they they did more like um kind of like lighter game. Definitely the the one that came um like race to the top last year was um um Night at the Zoo the from Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom Olock Thomas. Uh but yeah they the a few things this is going to a different weight like they going Yeah, they're going into the into the more heavier stuff. Looks absolutely brilliant. We can't wait to bring this one home.
Yeah. Euro worker placement. Take my money.
Traveling quickly from Prague to the Antarctic. Uh this is our next one which we're very excited about. Has a very striking cover actually and it is under -60° below 60 whatever what people call it.
People have started calling it in in different ways.
It's written - 60°. So
So that's what
that's what we're going to call it for now. Uh but yeah, this looks very very interesting Matt and a very beautiful uh looking game especially from the production level. So this is designed by Alexander Fister who kind of legendary he's done a few amazing games uh Marbo being one. He's also done some legendary the legendary great western trail and some other bits and bobs as well. He's a very well-known designer um alongside a co-designer in this instance. And this is going to be um essentially you're going on a scientific expedition to try and discover a strange event and figure out
mater. And so we're going to leave our great worker placement adventure and
work through the power of worker placement. A little bit of deck building. Um but this looks absolutely fantastic, man. I love the idea of it and I love the theming of it. I'm I'm quite Yeah, this game came out a little bit of out of nowhere. Nowhere.
Uh the publisher is the same if I remember right. They did um Evan for uh 3 four years ago I think three years ago. Uh cloud um cloud age the one with the Yeah, that was uh so yeah it's it's got something there. Um now what the games is going to be you're basically u going out into the Antarctica. You need to do researches. You need to build a network of uh um of stations and need to survive the very very unforgiving
environment. Unforgiving environment. Uh there's going to be sc it's going to be like a resource management. You need to manage the cold because it's of course you can't be outside
um too much. But yeah, it's it's going to be all about manage resources and and
managing the environment. Exactly. The very very tight sort of resource management piece. So you're doing this sort of also combining with getting the right gear. So making sure that your technological expertise is right that you're also going to be launching um scientific experiments as well. Your scientific team needs to be the most renowned. So you're also looking to try and get to that meteor. That's the main things you need to do. Yeah.
Absolutely. And on top again sort of all coated in this absolutely stunning looking artwork.
Yeah. The only things I'm not 100% sure is the look of the of the minis.
The I think they're fine.
I don't know. I think they're fine.
They look like cartoony while the the actual box art is very striking. Yes. Uh but yeah, very interested in this. So, we uh hope to get a copy of this. I'm not sure how many copies going to be, but we'll try to get one of -60°/ below 60/60 C.
Yeah. But maybe we'll we'll ask them what's the actual name. Yeah. One of my favorite artists in the board game space is Weberson Santiago. And whenever I see that sort of unmistakable art style, I'm like, "Oh, what is this?" And he has a new game coming. Although not the designer, the artist therein. But this is Blood Hunt. What's interesting about this is not just the artwork is that it is a spin-off sequel to four player variation of a very good two-player game, which was Dracula versus Van Help. Uh same same design I think theme uh same design duo um and um yes it's very similar what you're expecting from Draal vsing. So there's going to be this kind of like territorial controlless quality uh to the map with the same kind of like how you you play the cards cast/styles in the dragon versus vaneling uh but this time it's going to be playing the the four of you um and each one of you is going to be a vampire. So there is no one else in there is no Dracula. It's just like different vampire they're trying to share to share the city. Um so this is really interesting for few reason. First of all uh Dragon versus Bouncing is an amazing game. H it's very very difficult to find at least in the UK it's really really hard to find. Um the other things is we're going from a from a two-player game only to what can be played up to four player.
It's kind of like the vibe of the game is amazing. If you can share it with other people as well is I think it's uh it's super cool. Um the looks again Santiago is just like it's a it's an amazing amazing amazing artist. Um the price of the game is quite low. Um I did pre-order this one so you'll be happy to say I already paid for the
for the for the game. Uh yeah, can't really can't really wait to to get this one and and to play it.
There you go. Blood Hunt. During the summer while art was working away uh working like a dog uh someone said had a nice nice time at Berlin con and that is where uh I was working it and was having fun.
It's not fair but that's life. Uh but you say that you came back with a very nice experience with a game that is called Greenwood that was present there at the Berlingcon.
Yes. Tell us more about Greenwood and why are we paying for this game?
Why why are we buying this game with with the more stupid money? So it's a good question. Now this is actually
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The small money that we have. Uh is published by Ferand Spieler. Fans have done loads of big games. For example, Ark Nova being probably the biggest and most well-known one. Um but they've done you numerous other big games. So they're known for the heavier games in the genre
and but also you quite innovative games in the genre as well, but this one is so awesome and I was takenback immediately by the vibe of the game. The game is called Greenwood, but you look at the box art, it's like in blood. It's like is alive stunning. Very stunning
and very intriguing straight away. I was like that is dope. I need to find out more about this game. So, I had a great walkthrough of the game uh with one of the team from Furland Spilla and uh yeah, essentially uh the peninsula of Greenwood is being run by a circle of druids and it's advertised so imagine it's advertising in this in this fantasy world as a sanctuary for magical animals and this beautiful vacation spot, but that is a lie. There is a sinister undertone. So, in Greenwood, you're going to be playing as primal spirits and you need to try and save your companions and save Greenwood. That's what you're trying to do. Save the area. And you have this really interesting turn structure. You always have a difficult decision whether you want to use your abilities, your companions abilities from your playerboard or you can actually use other players uh companions abilities as well and or send your companions into the forest to rescue mystical creatures, try and heal the the the world of Green Greenwood. Um there is a symmetrical and an asymmetrical way of playing the game as well. Yeah, we love that. To make that more advanced. Um and it is really really fantastic.
The production Yeah, the production looks stunning. Again, this is another one that came out from uh kind of nowhere from from nowhere. That's
Well, it's really cool. Um would love to see these kind of things. Again, this is going towards the more
the heavier side
heavier side, but uh the all the artwork and all the stuff looks great. Looks like a lot on the thing on the table. It's
busy.
But um but the idea behind this sounds so cool. So yeah, please take our money. Uh Greenwood, it's alive. Greenwood.
Yep. Save me one, please.
So staying on the heavier end of the spectrum, Czech Games Edition have come back again at lesson with a monster of a game. As we mentioned, and we did sort of give a hint that Drillers wasn't their only release this year.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, Driller is already out. Um, go watch the review. We really enjoyed it. We really enjoyed it. Um, you can watch the full review, but here we're talking about Kingdom Come Deliverance the Ball game
that is the new uh massive
monster
uh sandboxy games based on Kingdom Come Deliverance the video game that we have absolutely no
no idea what it never played. We never played. But who are the designer?
Vlad Kavado from Mage Knight and also Thomas Hollik from Seti and other big design team.
Yes.
Putting those two two big brains together. Uh what they they they brought to us is literally this uh uh medieval sandbox game uh where you're going to play as as a hero as a main character, your your character. Um, and you can develop the character basically like as like you want.
Uh, you can send him down being a hunter or trying to become um a knight. Uh, in all of this you trying to yeah um building your building your deck of cards. There's going to be a lot of um elements taken like from stuff from both like mage knights and there are some similarities there. Um and you do need to do fulfill quest the contract that rightfully so they're call quest as it should be quest man.
Uh and uh there are stories story lines that you're going to discover during during the play through again. It's going to be such like a big stack of cards like in that you never going to do the same thing wise. Uh but it's it's basically this like they created this open world. Now, this is not going to be a game for the um fainted arts. Uh you're going to be you're going to strap in for the playing time
minimum, by the way.
It's like 3 hours minimum. So, it's it's um but by is it's an experience in the in this kind of open world. You can't do an open world things without investing the time in it. Uh but this is like again no strings attached to the video games. And I I didn't I knew the name but never played it or never never been interested in in this one. Uh but we're really interested in the game.
We are interested. We must try this game. It looks so it's so ambitious. We can't not give it a go.
And [clears throat] if it gives me um a western legend style.
Yes. uh in the medieval way uh with the all the cool mechanics that again the guys I'm sure they they put it in. This this is kind of like a must have. Come on. We must buy it.
Must buy it.
Yeah. We're buying it.
And for the next one, uh we're talking about Greece, we're talking about Greek gods. Uh, we're talking about um area control. Not
me literally. No, you're definitely not Greek.
Uh, no, we're talking about for the gods that we demo it last year. We demo it more. We might already got our our copy, but this we were bought it anyway. Um so yeah for the gods
for the gods is by the team at mighty boards and mighty boards have been absolutely fantastic in the last few years. The kenneshil disharis winning team that brought you rebirth which is a tremendous game for the gods by David Thompson Treasure Ben Trevor Benjamin the team that behind the undaunted series and other great games have brought
to the four this absolutely stunning very fun area control game. Yeah,
brilliant. Brilliant. Really interesting. Um, that has a kind of bag pulling mechanism. So, what you're trying to do in the game is take control of the various sort of Greek islands. That's what you're trying to do. And you do that by pulling tokens out of the bag. You can spend them to move your little boat to go to the different places. And then you're going to be committing and building pillars in glory to
And you want to have the most the the biggest powerful pill.
Yeah, exactly. You want to have the biggest, but who doesn't, right? And if you do, you can also, if you do have the biggest, hey, look, get your mind out of the gutter. You can um if the gods are super pleased with you, you'll pick up gods tiles as well, which will go back in your bag. And if you draw them, you're going to get lots of cool effects, and there's loads of gods
in the box to make the game like nice and replayable. Very uh fun, extremely interactive. Um, great tactical experience is done in like an hour and a bit. It races along. Great fun game. Thoroughly recommend trying that and copy
in a great production. I think the the guys the guys especially like with the all the the the art department for the game is been is stunning. Like you you see it the the map itself with done with like details Easter eggs as well.
Uh love absolutely love it. the game the game since we played it the first time we were like yes it's a banger it's just like it's it's great it plays very well at two players as well at three players basically you're removing certain region from the map so it's more interactive so it's not one of those games that you must have a lot of player two player three player role player absolutely very good it's so like yeah as you say mighty important in the last few years they just like it's been one after the other Like of course they're going to sell a lot of copies of Tambi like last year that was one of the hottest game um ever. Uh and then there's going to be the new one, the Yoai, the the Japanese one. But
very good game.
Go go go at the at that stand check what they got. The the guys absolutely lovely and but for the gods is coming home with us like Yeah, it should come over.
Fantastic. Yeah. Check out for the gods. So, every single year at spiel, Stonemire Games releases something. It's normally a surprise release. So, also watch out for that. They might just announce
there might be something else as well. But in advance of spiel, very exciting. There is a game called Raided Skies Man, which are you all excited. So, I'm very excited about this. It's been announced literally like a few days ago, not not that long in the typical sto. I really appreciate it cuz it makes the um going into even more exciting when these kind of things happen. Just like and here we go. Last year was for example origin story and we're just like here you go origin story fantastic game by the way that it's been not talked about enough that was origin story is a fantastic game. Uh but yeah break the sky. So why I was really interested when he when he's been announced because he's been um described as uh taking Arkham um um loss of anarch vibes and adding with this beautiful uh world building that the guys did um because this is going to be the first game of a trilogy uh in the Smoking Bones universe that is basically this um kind of like yeah this universe has been created by Andrew Bosley that is the same artist that the for example Everdale very beautiful like yeah absolutely fantastic fantastic work uh so basically what what you're doing uh you kind of like um work for um um a tourist um um like a travel agency
travel agent
so basically you got your your airborne blips or whatever airship you you are the captain you taking uh tourist
in the land But what you need to do, you need to discover like more like different type of lands. Uh you need to get certain specific fuels to fuel your ship cuz to go in certain location you need a specific type of fuel that are represented by the gems. H in all of this you're building your crew. So you you getting like um your own crew like building cards, taking cards and everything. Uh you're going around discovering places and you want to try to discover the magical wonders that of course is going to make all your um clients really happy and uh you want to be basically the best travel agent. That sounds like weird cuz you you could have been like yeah this fantastical things. You are the travel agent but it's it's great. Um, yeah. So, all these things put together, I mean, sounds like absolutely great. And when Storm comes out with a game, it's never
It's never a mess. It's never boring. It's never going to be It's always going to cause some sort of uh opinion. Should be quite interesting. I'm very excited to try this one. And we will 100% be grabbing a copy of it.
Yeah, this is this is going to be one of those like the art ones to get cuz I'm not sure how many copies they're going to be. This is we might need to run with the doors open. Uh one note about the designer. The designer was is actually um the same designers at Grand Central Sky Port that we were really interested uh back last year or or UKG like like we we discussed about the games before. You were really into it. They kind of kept this um working with the same artist as well. So the the artist and the designer they moved together as as a thing and you got this in Grand Central Sky but you still had this kind of like airbor. Um so yeah we we're going to run to trying to get a copy of Braided Skies cuz it sounds so cool.
Yeah.
Okay. We got a couple of more games that are going to come home with us.
Uh both are already actually home with us. We already spent the money about them. Uh but we really if we didn't had to if we didn't already bought the games, we would buy 100% buy these games. Um two different size, one big box, one small box. Let's start with a small box.
And we're talking about
Final Titan. Now, what a game. What a game. All right. Okay. Okay. Okay. We're going to talk more about this game at some point, 100%. So, watch out for that. There will be a review at some point. So, Final Titan is essentially a jeweling game, a a where you're playing in an arena send you are assembling a crew of fighters. You're going to send them into the arena to become the final Titan. And they've all got unique crazy powers. Absolutely just wild broken stuff. Who's the designer map of Final Titan?
Well, it's Mr. Richard Garfield.
Richard Garfield. So, uh, just absolutely legendary legendary board game designer and card game designer. And so, you can imagine Yeah, exactly.
So, you can imagine, uh, all of the crazy stuff and shenanigans that might go on. Matt and I have had the privilege of playing this game already to get our thoughts together for a proper review, which we will be doing ASAP. Watch out for that. Uh, but Matt, tell us more about Final Titans. The gameplay itself is super fun.
Yeah, it's it's very simp. The game is very simple. At the start, you're going to draft three titans. Uh each titans will have some specific powers and basically during during your turn you can decide do you want to get into the arena and be the challenger or being the fight champion or you want to chicken out. If you need to if you want to chicken out you pay with one of your cards is there are upgrade cards that you can play um during the game. Uh but if you're not chicken and you you actually enter in the arena, as soon as another Titan entered the arena, that's where the showdowns happen and basically you're going to roll dice. H each dice that you roll um will do certain effects. Some of them will be uh damaging the other units, the the the other challenger. Uh some of them will let you upgrade to do like the super power. Uh but it's all about that.
Now, each one of these titans, uh, they're broken, like in terms of like they going to do some crazy stuff, but, uh, it's so fantastic how you got like over hundred of these things. They're all broken, but they are so broken that at the same time, they all balance each other. It's everything's broken in different ways. And also when you combine the titans with the upgrade cards, which are cards that you will get for winning fights y and also as rewards for like putting bets on the different fights, you're going to add your these upgrade cards to your titans while they're in battle. They're one and done, but they're going to give some crazy ability that is also going to combine with your titans. Ignore this. It's going to add to this. It's going to do some crazy debuff.
Brilliant. And then basically if you win, your titan stays in the in in the things for the next player to challenge or chicken out. And uh whoever's got the last titan standing, that is the is the winner. Your titans will die. They will go away and you can put another one in the mix. Um that's so is such a s is to me it's been the most fun game that I played in probably years.
It is brilliant. So, this is the NerdLabs uh games. NerdLab Games team. Uh do go check out their stand. We've loved a lot of their things. Agent Avenue being another one, Mindbar being another one. Final Titan is their big release this year. It is top tier. We're not going to spoil too much. Please wait for the review, but this is 100%
right near the top of the buy list. Yeah, it's uh and my only comments I make about these games is just like in a world in a market with mega um complex game uh
rule book this thick and all like beautifully balanced and stuff. This game Final Titan is simply fun. Yes.
Is it nails down what a game should be fun? That's that's it. Full stop. We're going to do a full review later, but for now,
go buy it.
It's It's a buy game.
Yeah.
So, that was the small box game, but what about the big box game? Well, the big box game is the shiniest box game of them all.
Of them all.
And we cannot leave this video without recommending to you to pick up a copy of Avalon the Riven Veil by Shadoworn Games. We have done a review of Avalon the Riven Veil which you can go and check out linked below in the description and probably up there in the thing. So do check that out. Avalon the Riven Gale Riven Veil. Riven Gale. The Riven Veil. Yes. Windy. The Riven Veil uh is a contender for our game of the year as this video without playing anything else right now. It is absolutely spectacular. But Matt, what is it and why do the people need to pick up a copy? So um Avalon Rivenell is um um an area majority games where you going to lead the faction your faction one of the four faction in the box uh all in the legend. So you will have the knights of the rounds or uh you're going to have Mrred or you're going to have Merlin each one leading their own faction that will have a symmetric power but you're trying to basically conquer the lands in Avalon. Uh there's going to be an element where you sending out troops and uh discovering artifact, discovering magical beasts and trying to bond with them to sort of have them fighting for you. Um there's going to be there is a fantastic end management with the game. Each round you will have a certain number of cards that you need to play in each round to be able to do um deploying troops, moving troops.
Uh and there is a great great great great uh fighting um elements into the games with this kind of like push your luck mechanisms. Uh again if you want to know all the inside out of the game definitely go and watch the the review cuz we break down everything about the game. Now, uh the games that you can buy, um there you're going to get both the retail version uh that I think is kind of around the 80 pound 80 pound. There is a lot in even in the retail box.
The box is like this big. So,
there is a lot of minis, a lot of stuff. So, the retail is is really good. Uh, but I'm sure there's going to be copies of the all in of the um what was the the Kickstarter one because it just like it's got all the foil, all the extra shiny bits, the metal co, all of that stuff that I'm really happy that I back that version because the game the game is just like deserve that and the the production is stunning. Uh, again,
watch the review and understand why we're telling you that we would have bought the game if we already haven't bought it. And you know, I'm kind of tempted to buy another copy. Anyway, have a look. The Riven was amazing, amazing, amazing. Fantastic game. Please go watch the review. You must go check out the stand. But um yeah, it's got to be
Well done to you, guys.
Yeah. Yeah, it's got to be a pick.
So, that was it for our buyers list. So, uh yeah, hopefully you've got the money to go and spend on some of these games. We spent many, many euros. At least €10. So um at least 10 also but as Matt and I always say we recommend you try before you buy for everything for everything for everything we tell you. All of the things we recommend all these games are going to be for them as well. So you can sit down and and actually have a look if if it's interesting you just telling you what we are interested what we're going to put our money. We did our research. Most of these games we already played it and then we're going to go and buy them.
That's that's why we we're telling you this. Again, this is our pick. Now, I want to know what is your buying list.
Yeah, let us know in the comments below which games are top of your shopping list uh at Spiel and there are thousands of titles to pick up. Many games that of course which we haven't mentioned which have been released this year. All of those are going to be there as well and they're all going to be brand spanking new. Yeah. So, we've had to limit it just to the things that are going to basically be released at the show. But, there's going to be loads of stuff. Let us know what you're going to be picking up.
Yeah. And if you interested uh you can check our patre page. Yeah. If you got if you got spare three pounds uh what we're gonna do in the next few days there's going to be like an indepth buying list where we go
