all right today we're going to take a look at three new board games from Phil Walker Harding before we take a look at any of these games we want to talk about why I'm making a video featuring all three at once so first if you're not familiar with Phil Walker Hardy he is the designer of games like Baron Park Sushi go explorers and gizmos all of which are games that I've done reviews for that I've highly recommended they've been on lists of my favorite family board games basically Phil Walker Harding is brilliant when it comes to games that are for all ages and really engaging for adults just as much as they are for the children so what he's done is he and his wife Meredith have founded their own production company out of Australia called Joey games and this year they launched all three of these so this is these are all 2023 productions here and as you can see from the sides here like his many of his other games they're for ages Early Elementary so we've got uh six and up seven and up eight and up and they play within 20 to 30 minutes um the uh scribbly gum game here is for one

or more players and it really is unlimited how many players you can have whereas these other two games are two to four players there are competitive games here and Cooperative games they are very different but they all have they all will hit the same audience so I'm going to take a look at each one of these and if you are interested in buying them because they this is uh this new company Joey uh they are currently doing orders off their website and I have left a link in the description so to get started uh we're going to set aside busy beaks and take a look at scribbly gum and pass the party food first because these were both done by Phil and illustrated by his wife Meredith we'll start with past the party food first Oh and before one more thing before I jump into it all three of these games have something about Australia some lesson to be learned about Australia so we're going to take a look at past the party food and you may have noticed that there's no plastic wrap there's no that not that extra shine in order to be conservative they have sealed the games just with stickers and you can take these stickers off by using a hair dryer or you can use an a knife and in fact in the Box they even included

this note so that people could get the games open without tearing the uh the artwork on the sides of the box so I would I will later use a hair dryer blow dryer to take off the sticker but for now for the video I'm just going to use the knife so we should have one two and let me tell you a little bit about past the party food so this is the Cooperative game in the group and what you're doing is you are cooperating to get party food at your party before the dog does so everybody's it's kind of a set collection game actually everybody's gonna have their own player boards and they're going to be drawing this different party food now I am not from Australia and this is these are not familiar foods to me so I've I've already forgotten the names of some of them let's see if I can hmm oh boy I remember there's like fairy bread and something oh here it is green snakes hundreds and thousands biscuits that's how they call Sprinkles uh piglets fairy bread lamingtons those are the party food so what you're doing is you're putting

the party food in the bag and then one player is oh here we go one player they're taking turns but they're drawing one piece of food at a time and putting it on a plate and one plate gets served to the player across from them one gets served to the player to the left and to their right and what they're trying to do is help their other teammates collect sets of party food because after every set is collected the dog is going to get some of that party food and so this is a track where you've got your pawns moving up the track and then you've got the dog Pawn here who's also moving up and you want to get to the birthday cake or the party cake before the dog does so if the dog completes sets let's see there should be a dog board here okay so this sort of a modified player board for the dog you can see that sets of the same type the dog only needs three matching whereas players need four so anytime the dog completes a set he's going to move up three spaces or two spaces and if they complete one of each type they'll move up three spaces and you've got kind of similar movement points for the player boards but you don't move as far when you complete a set one of each type and in

order to Do complete sets you need to get four instead of three anyway oh and there's also a guide for what you're doing each time drawing food for the dog and drawing food for the players and then checking for who completed sets so we set that aside that is past the party food

and the next game here is scribbly gum now if you are familiar with the game explorers I've I've talked about explorers a lot this is one of my favorite games especially for multiple players um or many players but scribbly gum is kind of a simplified explorers so we'll take a look inside this is about a The larva of a moth oh wait I forgot I gotta do the sticker this is about a specific cheese of moth who's larva eats underneath the bark of a gum tree I think and so what the way you play is players have a piece of paper here and the paper shows all of the different foods that the larva wants to eat and so the larva's making its Trail and you can actually see this in the trees in Australia at least I've never seen it before but that's what the rules say so we're learning about Australia once again and so you're completing these different sets you're moving from food to food you've got some scoring on the side here and to determine where the The larva can crawl you'll be drawing these cards so you'll uh sometimes you'll have a choice so these cards will let you move left or right up or down or sometimes you'll

just get uh directions move left move right or you can move along dotted lines so there are a few objectives as well and this game is played simultaneously it's basically like your basic roll and write uh a card is drawn and everybody simultaneously chooses their path they can start at any of these one points and then they just move and make their scribbly path and at the end of score your card so that's why it can play up with as many players as you want because everyone is just playing simultaneously that is scribbly gum and so those were both illustrated by Meredith Walker Harding this last one though is done illustrations by Sarah Allen busy beaks this is a competitive set collection game that does have turn taking so oh you know what here's a layout of the game this will be important later we've got a tree and on this tree on each of three branches are birds so these represent three birds resting on one branch from the tree and those those branches are also like discard piles actually I actually think this one is not that it's complicated but it is the

most complicated of the three it's for ages eight and up so as I'm briefly describing it I might say one or two things wrong um but um let's see I already forgot what this is these looks like a card box okay so primarily it's a card game this is the tree pieces I see so we we take these pieces out to make our tree I'll just take out the trunk eggs are worth points so you're making these stacks of eggs and as players complete stacks of curds they're taking the eggs to represent their points so you play the game by selecting what group of cards you want I'll open at least one of these wow they really were eco-friendly about this this is paper wrapping for the cards rather than using plastic I really appreciate that and you know what this is actually a good time while I'm describing my appreciation for how eco-friendly the game is every one of these games also has a purpose like a non-profit a charity that the game gives to so like this game specifically it's giving to bird life Australia one percent for the planet and pay the rent which is um for aborigine people in Australia so each of these games has different

um Charities or non-profits that are being donated to which I think is just fantastic it is very clear that Phil and Meredith wanted to start a game company with a real purpose and they they didn't cut any Corners here every aspect of this game is done to accomplish a mission all right anyway let's look at these bird cards so you've got several different types of birds and when you play the game you have to pick which sets you want to play with these cards by the way they feel like they're made out of recycled paper or something they're not they're they're they're good quality cards but they feel a little different than most of their cards I'm not sure if they're made out of recycled paper but that's just how I would describe it okay oh you know what these are now I know these are the boxes to contain the different sets of cards so anyway you're looking at the different sets of cards and you've got to pick a few to play with I wonder if I can quickly just look up there's 14 different birds in the game 12 copies of each type of bird and then when you play the game you use you use one two three four five six seven is it seven I think you might use seven types of yeah you so you use seven for each game so you pick the birds you want and then each bird has some action

associated with it most of the time what you're trying to do is play the bird cards in order to get sets of birds so this is a game where you've got let's say you've got a hand of cards like this okay so this is this is my hand of cards and look I'm doing really good on collecting the Palm cockatoo I've got three already I think you need five to complete this set so my my my thinking is how can I get more of these birds and I can use these ones since I don't have duplicates of these maybe these will be the ones that I spend in order to get these so I would play the you know these are the these are the reference cards I'm not even playing with the proper cards okay so I'm going to play my rainbow lorikeet onto the table and do this action which looks like it's going to allow me to take three cards from the row but in order to play this card this is now discarded so now the rainbow lorikeet is available for somebody else to claim and so maybe somebody else um they play a broiga card and maybe the boy of the card I think this is saying can take the two cards that are above it so maybe they play it down here and maybe there's another one over there so they play this one and now they take these two and they go into their hand and now it's my turn again and I'm thinking oh gosh well now

that that's available maybe I can create a set with this one so I try to play this card and it lets me take two from the branch so now I'm picking this up there's also a draw phase and a discard phase and a few things like that but the idea is you're trying to complete the sets and the cards you're choosing from are the discards that other players have used throughout the game and then as soon as you complete a full set you discard that you take the eggs and you keep going so a really neat card game lots of variability since you've got so many different choices of cards to play with I did a very quick overview of the rules and I I'm telling you right now I didn't do it perfectly um

play a bird card score A Flock you may score A Flock and then draw a card and then lastly fill the tree those are the phases of gameplay anyway these just arrived today all three of them did I'm looking forward to playing them all with my family and you can bet I will have reviews for each one of these games as I add the reviews I will put links in the description so um that's it for today the three games busy beaks scribbly gum and pass the party food by Joey games all brand new I will see you next time
