Description

In CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine which resources the island produces. Players build structures by 'spending' resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) which are represented by the relevant resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.

Set-up includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each depicting one of the five resource-producing terrain types--or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange. A number disk, the value of which will correspond to the roll of two 6-sided dice, are placed on each terrain tile. Each player is given two settlements (think: houses) and roads (sticks) which are placed on intersections and borders of the terrain tiles. Players collect a hand of resource cards based on which terrain tiles their last-placed settlement is adjacent to. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.

A turn consists of rolling the dice, collecting resource cards based on this dice roll and the position of settlements (or upgraded cities—think: hotels), turning in resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, possibly playing a development card, or trading resource cards with other players. If the dice roll is a 7, the active player moves the robber to a new terrain tile and steals a resource card from another player who has a settlement adjacent to that tile.

Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road or the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points. When a player has gathered 10 points (some of which may be held in secret), s/he announces this and claims the win.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And they realize I can hold my own train pieces and Ticket to Ride how exciting is that going to be
  • With some games we won't play them until Zach has read the rules himself which he does as feverishly as reading a Lego catalog
  • I don't think children are able to distinguish those differences early on so you're kind of burdening them with um a difficult responsibility if you expect them to know when to turn that on and off when they're quite young
  • Letting kids win is not always a good idea
  • if winning is not the most important part of the game then why why are you letting your child win every time you're basically making winning the most important part by your own actions
  • And then when I finally won it felt so good I felt like I'd really accomplished something
  • that's a very important life lesson to teach your children
  • because this gives them a legitimate way to win because sometimes they're going to get lucky and that's great it levels the playing field
  • and I don't think that any of our gaming systems have been turned on for you know couple of months probably since we started board gaming
  • I've seen marked improvements in his reading skills his strategizing his problem solving especially his attit towards attitudes towards uh being fair play and and being a good loser
  • you can't force them into it obviously a gentle push in the direction to get them started is fine but you have to let them decide what they do and do not like on their own

Quotes (from this video)
  • I used to flip the table a lot but now I don't flip the table nearly as often as what I used to
  • I think game designers buy fewer games than game players do because game designers have more exacting standards
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with you determining for yourself what games you like more and which ones you like less that doesn't make you a snob I think the snobbery comes into play on how you treat other people who don't share your same interests
  • I think you can get caught up in Chasing The Cult of the new and that will burn you out I think over time I don't think that can be a sustainable Joy

Quotes (from this video)
  • I have this smile forcing its way onto my face it doesn't matter how many fingers I try to on or if I think of Margaret fater on a cold day it doesn't work
  • I always make sure mine are standing straight up I cringe when people place them upside down on their side or anything
  • Michael you're like a terrible architect your people keep making these horrific houses
  • I sleeve the cards for almost all of my games
  • I'm especially bad about neatness with magic the Gathering I change my sleeves every month or two because I can't stand the bent edges and slightly gunky feel they get from being in your hands so much
  • I just wanted to reach into the screen and straighten it some of the Ed in my videos are done to cut out shots of me straightening components in Carone
  • if someone places a tile that shifts the whole play area I cannot continue until all of the roads and cities are lined up again
  • When playing Dominion I put cards in order by cost value and then alphabetically
  • I'm sorry for the distress I caused by sweeping all of the pieces of my Twilight Struggle into the box I feel bad about it it's now organized I hope you're happy
  • I cannot play a game that uses paper money I will be holding in my hand the entire game folded up like I'm one of the participants in a back alley craps game from one of those mob movies
  • when a monster is in range of the heroes and they're all facing random directions I have to take their pieces and the monster and make them all face each other otherwise it just looks silly to me
  • it gets me when someone keeps the communal dice in front of them when they are done rolling
  • one of my many quirks is seeing game components and not knowing what game they came from
  • I count all of them cubes dice mles cards boards other pieces I'll even look up the quantities on Board Game Geek if the rules don't cover it I need to do it before playing a game the first time
  • I have these lying around blank cubes you know those were handy for prototyping games and things but I mean that's for a game collector that's no good
  • I have to take their pieces and the monsters and make them all face each other
  • I need to shuffle the cards seeing people shuffle cards horribly bothers me so much

Quotes (from this video)
  • Pap, you still haven't received your Tekkaido that you backed at a pretty high amount because you got your own character in the game.
  • It's funny. We we talked about that at some point. Just like the humor, like the humor of doing something like a pep talks where I would talk about, you know, like some advice for particular games and it's something I like that. I like that. I love that idea of a pep talk.
  • Rebel Mage here uh, left a message just said, "Pep, just want to say you're a great co-host for watching play. Keep up the good work."
  • For me, it's probably going to be Star Realms. Star Realms is very high on here as well for me. Um, but I kind of want to skip that just because of how repeatable Star Realms is anyway. And I'm going to go to Sheriff of Nottingham.
  • Uh, this is self- serving, but I would dress up as a Mounty and be my character from the Dead of Winter promo that's in the fundraiser.
  • I'd want to find something I already look like and kind of like I wouldn't just go as my favorite character. I'd go as a character that I think I that I could that I could best look even kind of naturally almost, right?
  • Yes, we talk about it somewhat frequently actually. Like, oh, we should probably cover some of the old older classics. Yeah, cuz there are still people today who pick up those games and and want to uh learn how to play them, right?
  • Every game. But the one that always comes to mind for me is uh Pathfinder and any game that's kind of trying to do what the Pathfinder adventure card game is doing because in that game whenever you level up and complete missions, you get like draw a random item out of the box or do this or do that.
  • Like Seall has something similar to that. They have an emnity thing. If you attack someone then they remember that other players remember that in in the game's mechanics and then that comes back to haunt you later or whatever.
  • The whole idea of under Mountain is like it's constantly shifting and like it's the surroundings are changing. So every time you go down, things will be a little different anyway. So it' be really cool to make like a legacy style dungeon exploring thing around the end of that naturally.

  • The most-viewed video on Nights Around a Table by far, and it's not even close, is my "How to Play Catan" video.
  • I could not believe the complexity of this game!
  • If you play, you've got to play for more than an hour, guys! The game goes on for more than an HOUR!
  • Generally, there's more messing with each other, and more wrecking in this game, for sure, than in the base game. It's a little bit more in-your-face. You might say more mean. More "interactive" is another way to put it.
  • I think publishers are paying much more attention now to how their games go back in the box.
  • it is a rewarding game experience that I actually found quite fun.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a way for board game publishers to take their existing customer base that has already purchased something from them, and say "Well you like that? Heeere's more!"
  • Because usually expansions require you to have the base game in order to play with them.
  • So you don't get it home and get disappointed or feel ripped off.
  • And the cynical side of me suspects that that's just a way for publishers to train their customers to try to play their games more than other people's games, right?
  • So I have a lot of expansions in my collection that are either unopened, or they've... I've just opened them and organized them, I've played them maybe once, or they're on my big list of things that I desperately want to play, and it's all because the people I play with don't know the base game.
  • So that's really important to know going in, hoping - you know - hoping that you can mix everything together, and then finding out that you can't.
  • It should go without saying, but it just feels better playing with better stuff!
  • So what you really have to try to figure out, and it's difficult I realize, is: will paying that extra money be worth that amount of enjoyment that I will get out of extending the lifespan of the game?
  • BUY!!! BUY!!! BUY!!!

  • Trading — Players trade resources with each other to optimize hand and gain advantage.

  • here it is the settlers of catan
  • the hexes and that darn gray robber
  • it's the perfect social game
  • we would have to give it a really high recommender score
  • not the most nuanced in terms of decision making
  • not the most thematically gripping
  • this is a clean gateway to other board games as they'll teach you what you like and don't like in games
  • you can't really go wrong having a copy on hand at home
  • katan is such a well-produced and elegant game
  • the fact of the matter is that i still have friends who are interested in catan
  • it's just a gateway to other board games

  • So i've collected a few board game terms that i'd like to define for you, and none of these individually warrants a full video.
  • So first up is the word "orthogonal."
  • Orthogonal is the other one.
  • So, you get this concept of "orthogonal adjacency."
  • This is just when, uh, the decision space in a game is so complicated - there are so many different things, different levers to pull, and different wazoos to wiz-wang - that you just go into, like, a catatonic state, and you can't make up your mind, and you can't play your turn, and your fellow players get frustrated with you.
  • Meeple.
  • A portmanteau - a mashup of two words = the words "my," and "people."
  • This is a concept where you have a playing card on the table, and it has a power or an ability, and in order to use that ability, to remind you that it is used, you turn it 90 degrees clockwise.
  • And for many many, years board game manufacturers were very... litigation shy, and they didn't want to call the mechanic in their game "tapping,"
  • But around the board game table, people who know games will almost always call that action "tapping."
  • So we have this concept of turn order, which isn't too difficult to understand: the first player goes first, and the second player goes second, and on down through all the players in the game.
  • But in snake order, it goes in turn order, and then it goes in reverse turn order backwards from the player in the lowest rung of the totem pole back up to the top.
  • So it sort of - you know - wends and winds itself like a snake.
  • So I hope that helps! i plan to do a few of these terminology grab-bags in order to just clarify a few terms for newcomers to modern board games, in case you're wondering, or you're reading reviews and you have no idea what people are talking about, you can find the answers hopefully here!
  • For my TAs in the room: if you can think of any of these pieces of terminology that you think would make good entries into this little grab-bag collection, please let me know in the comments below, or you can tell me in person by using that link at the bottom of your screen on the Discord server, where we all hang out and talk about board games every hour of the day!

  • marvel or dc i'm a marvel guy but i grew up reading a lot of superman
  • dc tends to be gods among men kind of storytelling where you have these all-powerful creatures or beings or whatever and then marvel superheroes i often think of as down on your luck kind of humans who ended up with these powers that end up being kind of a curse along with a blessing
  • it's not surprising that board games did the same thing
  • oh that's what every woman feels like when they read a book oh i hadn't really thought of it that way because of course i didn't because of course this language was always catering to me traditionally

  • two players is not really that good i mean it works and it plays fine but compared to playing with three four maybe even five players it's going to be a kind of a different experience

  • You're tired of schlepping around a million different boxes. So what do you do? Well, one solution is to get a special custom insert to fit it all inside one box.
  • Now you may have noticed that our sponsor pronounces Catan properly: they said 'Catahn' in that spot. I do not say it that way. I say it 'Catan,' because... I'm an only child.
  • If you have the base game Catan, you don't really need that because all your pieces are gonna fit in there fine. But this fits Catan, and the Catan 5-6 player expansion, and if you have Cities & Knights, it's gonna fit everything from the Cities & Knights box in this insert in one single box, and the 5-6 player expansion for Cities & Knights. And if you have Seafarers, it's going to fit that as well.
  • So overall, I mean, it looks nice, doesn't it? Looks pretty good! Uh... would you get this? Would you buy this? Are you a big Catan fan, and you hate schlepping around two or three different boxes?
  • I do believe that the claims that this insert makes are true. I believe you can store it vertically. I trust that you can store sleeved cards in these card trays.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I've determined on on Twitch when you're trying to to build up a following on Twitch you uh they make you commit to a schedule and yet you stream the same time every week
  • This is just I I've determined on on Twitch when you're trying to to build up a following on Twitch you uh they make you commit to a schedule and yet you stream the same time every week
  • My epidemic sound subscription last they want uh 15 bucks a month for their service which now that I'm looking at other competing services I think is pretty good but what you're gonna get this stream is no music and I'd be told by many people that the music is great it's great to have on in the background it'd be maybe a little bit more easy to listen to than my dulcet tones but apologies no music on this stream except for yes you're right that jazzy funky lobby music
  • The way they made the blaster noises you know like the pew pew was they went to uh you know those cables that hold up telephone poles that have like they have like plaque plastic sheaths or condoms around them I guess to protect the metal from corrosion so they take that plastic sheet off sheath off and they hit that that tie with a fork and that was the sound of blasters and Star Wars I was like oh amazing
  • So one of the most important things your thumbnails and your titles and so he has a big subscription to a bunch of different board game channels and he looks through and there's like you know things fly on like 60 videos a day or something like that and he just steps through and you know the ones that jump out and grab his attention he clicks on
  • I know one of the people that I and many others have looked to for advice and guidance not personally but just by watching what he does is let me see if I have it open here watch yeah watch played of course rodney smith
  • So you've got uh this kid Matthew Jude who's stuff I really like listen to Matthew dude he's cool I dig him um and he he's they're doing the YouTube thing where they they cut out a person they put an outline around them to separate them from the background and then I don't know these ones to me look a little bit cluttered there's a whole pile of stuff going on there and I don't know it's another thing you got to look at I don't know if they read that well when they're really small
  • It drives me nuts that you spell it Quackalope because if you're trying to be like like Jackalope and Jackalopes from antelope and that's e-l-o-p-e and then quack anyway drives me nuts Jackalope is also e-l-o-p and you went a
  • So the key color that he's picked for me for
  • My take personally is that what Jessie's doing here I don't know it looks a little too me too YouTube it looks a little too fast food I guess to me you know what I mean like fast food they always you notice the big fast food companies they always go hot reds hot yellows hot oranges
  • So you know the the type of video in the corner in red and his his background is blue with stripes I don't know color theory wise if the red works all that well with the blue I don't find that those are necessarily colors that go all that nicely together so I might do something something different
  • But you know what do I know of Quake he's got 30,000 subs and I don't
  • Engagement is the most important stat so that's uh you know did they click on the thing and clicking on the thing is all about thumbnail and title and if they clicked on the thing did they keep watching the thing and that's a whole other it's a whole other work stream getting them just keep watching which is something I'm clearly working on as people fly out of this stream like it's on fire
  • So again you got to rely on your strengths I don't know that that's one of my strengths so I got to come up with something else but yeah so I don't know necessarily that it's their thumbnails that are getting them all those views their content is very good their banter is good they've got other other other things going for them
  • The text on the Thinker Themer thumbnails is way too small like I can't I can't read it
  • I think it's just readable it's clean it looks cool slightly cartoony slightly has a tie on you know it can can go both ways I think that's good this uh the kerning is not very good on it currently but currently auto kern no still don't like that touching anyway
  • So what I would do now to to modify this I think Michael you whoa what the hell is this I I think Michael Todd's eyes are kind of off putting in this I don't necessarily think that I would click on that and I don't know I don't know I I don't know so what I might do for this one is the reason it's called small brain big sack by the way that's another thing too is it's click baity really only if you don't fulfill your promise
  • So I have to pay attention to what um what publishers value and what they want
  • The very first one I did was for castles of burgundy it's nice to go back and see how things have improved if you think they look crappy now wait till you see the older videos
  • I am a creative generalist and companies they just want they want cogs for their machine and if you're not a super specialist cog first of all you're really hard to replace
  • The job search petered off tapered off as soon as I found out there there just didn't seem to be anything out here in Oshawa and I've kept at this so I have tried from the very beginning
  • I saw the other how to play videos that people were doing and I had criticisms of them I thought why would you put setup near the beginning of the video that is like the most boring thing about a board game how to play video puts me right to sleep if I did it and I did it at all I would put setup like at the end of the video because I know that you have to excuse me you have to capture people's attention right away you have to hook them right off the top
  • I am determined to turn this into a job just because I find that I can't rely on the market to give me a job that I would want to do that's fulfilling that I'm good at uh because I'm a specially shaped cog I believe that about myself in certain areas
  • So $500 and this is remember I'm spending full-time hours so you gotta ask yourself would I spend full-time hours making like a fraction of minimum wage doing the stuff if you're dumb like me maybe you would
  • So what I kind of have to do is tool my content according to what publishers want and in my experience so far what publishers want is not how to play videos
  • So subscribers can be misleading because people don't usually unsubscribe that's an interesting take but I could challenge you on that let me just read what Vinnie says The Dice Tower has just under three of course Dice Tower 300K despite having multiple content creators under their umbrella I'm really curious about the lone board game content creator with 1 million subscribers though
  • The trick with doing something different than nobody else is doing is you have to think of something different than nobody else is doing and bank on it being something that people will find compelling I've had all kinds of ideas for stuff that nobody else is doing and I've run it by my friends and family they're being like that no that's nuts nobody would have watched that what are you doing
  • If you look too much like you're trying to appeal to the YouTube crowd I.E younger people are like thrill seekers I don't think it's going to appeal to board game people
  • So the very best thing if you want stuff to happen on Reddit is for somebody who's not you to promote it for you
  • The reason why I don't like content and content creators is because I'm talking about perfectly shaped and sized cogs to fit in the machine that's just the machine needs something to call what we're doing and it's going to use the most commoditized term the most soulless commoditized term it can possibly come up with
  • The reason why I don't know if their thumbnails are that's another case where like I don't know if it's neces like everything's necessarily worth emulating and Shut Up & Sit Down just because you know they've got a huge fan base because it might not have been the thumbnails that got them that that fan base you know what I mean so you could be the top of your game but have not the greatest thumbnails
  • It's against the law like hate to sound like a giant nerd but that's the law you gotta check that box and the FTC has been cracking down on certain influencers on social media because they don't disclose like that and you gotta I mean people deserve to know whether you're being paid to make the thing right
  • First Look that's a I don't know get on my case if you think that's a little bit skeezy but um there are certain words that and people in marketing know this there are certain words that are attention grabbing um free is one of them you is another if you start your YouTube video or any video out and you work the word you into the introduction it's grippier so I try to do that on TikTok
  • You know I think the other thing that people look at they'll look at this logo and we'll take a look at at John Gets Games too because I think it's worthwhile but they'll look at that logo like oh yeah Shut Up & Sit Down I like what they do they'll click on it if they never heard of them I think the next thing they look at is time
  • I've barely done any top fives top tens on my channel because again I'm a I'm special I don't want to be I don't want to be like everybody else and then I don't succeed like everybody else and then I complain but like uh this was one that I did that that Monopoly one again was supposed to be the kickoff of a series so top five best board games to take camping that's widening the funnel because now you're not trying to attract people based on one single board game they might be interested in zero of the board games that I talk about in that video but you're casting the net wide enough to include people who like board games and who go camping and want to take board games camping or want to know what I think about taking board games camping you see Ryan's top 10 beige games you've suggested that before on the discord server haven't you
  • I think that's a lot of people I don't know I don't think that's a lot of people it's so small so small and sad
  • The exception I take to that is that she doesn't three minutes four minutes look she puts it right in her banners and her banners again you can tell that she looked at Ronnie Smith too and thought okay I'll do a similar thing even down to the color that she's using
  • You know what I mean so I think three minute teach of a really complicated game is a bit far-fetched
  • But you know I think the other thing that people look at they'll look at this logo and we'll take a look at at John Gets Games too because I think it's worthwhile but they'll look at that logo like oh yeah Shut Up & Sit Down I like what they do they'll click on it if they never heard of them I think the next thing they look at is time
  • I find really short rules coverages like rules girl three minute board games only good for quick overviews yeah I agree and they're fine for what they are I'm just saying don't call them how to plays don't call them rules videos right I think Jay from three-minute board games we should take a look at him too um
  • I think the other thing that people look at they'll look at this logo and we'll take a look at at John Gets Games too because I think it's worthwhile but they'll look at that logo like oh yeah Shut Up & Sit Down I like what they do they'll click on it if they never heard of them I think the next thing they look at is time
  • So you're looking at the thumbnails but you're not looking at this time like look at this Beyond the Sun playthrough and review an hour and 59
  • It's very compelling but I thought that about the Monopoly video I thought that about other stuff too Secret Life of Board Games didn't work
