Description

By request of Fantasy Flight Games, Board Game Geek lists the various editions of Cosmic Encounter in separate entries. Each edition is the same game at its core, but the features, compatible expansions, and production differ among them. This entry is for the original 1977 Eon version.

Players represent alien races that are seeking to spread themselves onto five foreign worlds. To accomplish this, they make challenges against other players and enlist the aid of interested parties. But alien powers, which are unique to each race, give players ways to bend or outright break some rule in the game.

The game continues until one player occupies five planets in other systems to win. Shared victories are possible and a player need not occupy one's own system to win.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, the highest ranked game I haven't played is Eclipse: Second Dawn.
  • Each year I play more more games and each year I have played fewer of the top 100. BGG's top 100 is turning into heavy game central, for sure.
  • Daydream is a cozy roll and write.
  • Stop telling me your games are cozy.
  • Terraria on the box says 45 minutes per player. I don't even know what what was going on there because someone was like, you lots of publishers lie about time. No one lies that that egregiously. It is not even remotely 45 minutes a player.
  • I don't like Imperial at all. There's my review of
  • Wise Wizards definitely said they're kind of on the uh that they're that they're struggling with a lot of stuff. So, I hope it works out pretty well.
  • That was Zen Camilla, and they said it was really really hard, which made me not really particularly want to play it that strongly. I like to play games that are easier, not as difficult.
  • Um, there's there's always things we're working on. Uh there's something small bag that we're working on. I can't really talk about that. Um, yet, but you'll know about that in a few weeks.

  • We're the best channel on YouTube. You should work with us.
  • I don't have a good filter. I just, you know, you get excited, right?
  • It's it's a representation of you. That's true.
  • So for me, the why is 100% just spending time with my friends.
  • It's it's a labor of love and it's just because we love board games and we love each other.
  • I want the soul to still be there. I still want it to be at its heart friends just having fun and playing games.
  • It's it's literally the thing that I put the most effort into ever, and it gave me the least amount of return.
  • The incentives on this are so backwards and drive me absolutely. No, for sure.
  • you know, like you said, you'll you'll put a lot of effort into a video and then it won't get a lot of views.
  • If I had like one piece of advice, there's a lot of channels that could improve their audio.
  • We never see you just naturally, right? which is hilarious because Ivy Studios is probably the most concerned with production across their videos, their playthroughs, their their actual games.
  • Not being afraid to be told no because like that's the worst that's gonna happen is they're gonna say no.
  • I want them to look up is there a Grove how to play on it. That's my that's my goal.

  • Majority Control — It has like kind of war where you want to have like the majority. It's basically majority, but you you have these when you're the lead player and this goes around from round to round, you are like challenging for to take over a planet, basically.
  • Negotiation — This has negotiation.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And you are watching Board Gaming Rambling.
  • So today, we are taking a look at 10 games that are great with five players.
  • The reason is because we wanted to. Yeah, just because it we did it was fun this time to do it.
  • And this is a bit unusual because usually when we make top 10 list, we make each list we make that's not a sentence. We make our own list. And this time somebody else made a list. It's someone It's Bob. Bob made a list. No, we have a joint top 10 this time.
  • I feel like the pool of games I would put into this list is way smaller than for example if we did top 10 heavy games or top 10 worker placement games.
  • Because if we play three players, I don't care if it's a multiplayer solitaire game. But if you're five people, I need to be also more engaged in when the other players have their turn, which then interaction is a big part of that.
  • And there is like a tendency from newer Eurogames to have less interaction than older Eurogames. That that be a topic that would be interesting to talk about in the future.

Quotes (from this video)
  • so I was delighted at at the end of the game we added up the points and it turns out I had tied for the victory with Rich so of course we went into the rule book to find out who is the true winner by discovering the tiebreaker rules but there weren't any
  • I would normally say that I prefer when there is some kind of tiebreaker in the rules in fact when I don't see them I sometimes wonder did the designer just forget did the publisher make a mistake in the rulebook and they just didn't add
  • I've seen some games where there's like four or five levels deep of tie Breakers so it's like you know if you tie for the most victory points the player with the most money wins if you're still tied the tied player with the most cattle wins if you're still tied the tide player with the most sheep wins if you're still tied the tide player with the longest hair wins if you're still tied the tide player willing to cut off their finger wins you know it's just it's too much at that point I think you've gone too far
  • a tie is kind of an it can be an unfulfilled outcome particularly for people who are programmed to see games is either having a winner or a loser so a high is kind of this fuzzy maybe unsatisfying area
  • isn't it better that they get to go away with the feeling of hey we both won this thing that was a a really good satisfying struggle and we were both equal to the task isn't that perhaps better than trying to dig down to some obscure tiebreaking thing that then says well you want just this little bit more

Pros
  • Distinct sci-fi flavor with a memorable centerpiece like the hyperspace gate that makes the game visually and tactilely engaging.
  • High replayability due to a large roster of aliens and a wide variety of flares and artifacts that alter interactions each game.
  • Rich social dimension: politics, alliances, deception, and negotiation create dynamic group interactions.
  • Clear, if colorful, visual cues for phases and turns; aliens display the phase triggers, which helps new players grasp the flow.
  • Hand management provides meaningful decisions and bluffing opportunities; players can bluff to manipulate opponents' perceptions.
  • Endgame variability and multiple potential paths to victory prevent monotony across games.
Cons
  • Rulebook text is dense and ambiguous; a lack of diagrams and limited indexing can hinder quick reference and edge-case rulings.
  • No dedicated player aids; players must reference card text and rulings repeatedly, which slows play and raises friction.
  • Alien powers can be overpowered or unbalanced, creating potential imbalance and chaos that may tire some players.
  • The complexity and wordiness of card text makes learning and teaching the game arduous, especially for new groups.
  • Component labeling inconsistencies (e.g., flares not always labeled clearly) can cause memory lapses mid-game.
  • Weird edge-case interactions and the possibility of very long durations with certain group dynamics can be a pacing issue.
  • Not ideal at very low player counts (3 players) and the base game scales differently than expansions intended; time may stall.
  • Some players may view the game as 'the game plays itself' in certain group dynamics, which can be off-putting for Euro-first players.

  • Alien powers (asymmetry) — Fifty different alien powers introduce asymmetry and unique triggers that can alter the flow of encounters, diplomacy, or scoring.
  • Alliance invites and turn order — Invitations to ally are resolved in clockwise order, influencing who can join which attack or defense as the table dynamics unfold.
  • alliances — Attacker and defender can invite other players to join their side as allies, contributing ships and affecting combat outcomes.
  • Asymmetric Player Powers — Fifty different alien powers introduce asymmetry and unique triggers that can alter the flow of encounters, diplomacy, or scoring.
  • Destiny and graveyard system (warp) — Destiny cards determine attack targets and the warp acts as a graveyard where ships are revived or moved before battles.
  • Encounters (combat resolution) — Encounters are the core combat mechanism where attacker and defender each commit ships and play encounter cards to resolve a fight.
  • Endgame scoring and multi-winner dynamics — Victory can be achieved by players via multiple simultaneous paths (multiple players can reach 5 VP or meet other house rules), emphasizing group dynamics and political maneuvering.
  • Faction/reaction variety (flares and artifacts) — Flares and artifacts provide flexible, reusable tools that can shift control of a battle or defensive outcomes and encourage resource management decisions.
  • Hand Management — Players manage a hand of encounter cards, flares, artifacts, and reinforcements; drawing up to eight when possible and discarding when hand is zero;
  • Negotiation — Players use negotiation as a core mechanic to trade planets or cards and to form or break alliances during encounters.
  • Take That — A variety of cards and alien powers can modify outcomes or negate other players' actions, creating swings and counter-swings.
  • Take-that / power negation — A variety of cards and alien powers can modify outcomes or negate other players' actions, creating swings and counter-swings.
