Description

"You are a monarch, like your parents before you, a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams! You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion! In all directions lie fiefs, freeholds, and feodums. All are small bits of land, controlled by petty lords and verging on anarchy. You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner.

But wait! It must be something in the air; several other monarchs have had the exact same idea. You must race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury. Your parents wouldn't be proud, but your grandparents, on your mother's side, would be delighted."

—description from the back of the box

In Dominion, each player starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the center of the table is a selection of other cards the players can "buy" as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious victory points by game end.

Dominion is not a Collectible Card Game (CCG), but the play of the game is similar to the construction and play of a CCG deck. The game comes with 500 cards. You select 10 of the 25 Kingdom card types to include in any given play—leading to immense variety.

  • the competitiveness gets crappy if like you if you cannot admit to yourself that you're competitive because that's when you will start being like horrible
  • humans are I think generally really really honest with each other I think we'd be shocked really to realize how often we're quite honest that it's such a cultural norm and I think there's something lovely and delicious and interesting and empathy building about making consensual spaces where we go no we're going to do you
  • games are this wonderful Embassy space where we can meet each other and uh we can kind of hang out
  • the higher up that I was the better I was doing in a tournament the less eye contact there was at the table and stuff
  • the joy that I experience of those kids of of completely fooling me and lying to my face I think actually does build trust and it's wonderful
  • it turned out that they'd all been playing uh we one night werewolf in the dressing room and that was like a sign for like how they'd all sort of got this like developed an in team language of like of of lowering the mask to reveal that they were actually aw wolf
  • I've been like loving it which is a game uh I think it's published by Hobby Japan called Builders high it's a kind of weird mix of engine building and shedding it's a card game right where you are building laying down buildings um you've got to fulfill some kind of there'll be some City contracts out right uh you're You're Building buildings but you've also got to get rid of everything in your hand and there's also you some cards have got money on and some of them are buildings and the buildings once you've built them do stuff have special powers so you're slowly building an economic engine the wrinkle in the game is that you can only spend exact amounts of money so if you get because you're it's you're basically public you're doing stuff for the city your public industry so you've got to um use up every bit of money in your contract you can't have money left over that doesn't go anywhere so um it's a really interesting game of think actually quite a lot of spending is harder than it first looks it's also a race because there's this amazing point you can't you can't end the game until you've claimed one of the contracts by building a set number of buildings and they're they're different targets right and and then the game and then what you're doing immediately there's this beautiful art where it immediately turns and you are having to shed your hand so suddenly everything you've been doing in the game up to then get money get buildings build this thing you now don't care about and you're just trying to spend everything in your hand and empty your hand onto the table so there's this lovely Arc and this lovely turn and for me the artwork is never going to be hung in the Lou um it's you know the Box looks nice but for me it just does something that um a lot of other games it just doesn't feel like anything else in my collection
  • it just does something that a lot of other games it just doesn't feel like anything else in my collection
  • it's found a kind of like ecological niche in every game night I've had there's always time for it
  • Tim you are the most fantastically autistic person I've ever assessed
  • on one level it's like well it's your special interest him you know that that's like a quite a pat answer is that you're autistic and you find meaning by diving into something in its totality and then when you're very safe in that kind of area of knowledge like almost like throwing out grappling hooks and kind of like doing boarding actions on adjacent topics and using board games as a way of like relating to everything else from this kind of uh you know Fortress of Solitude of board games
  • as someone who's been particularly craving like human connection and human contact and I sometimes found that difficult and has found essentially what I would describe as a I'd characterize as kind of a uh an accessibility Aid uh through games
  • we think of autism as being a uh a social impairment right as as having deficits when it comes to connecting with other human beings but I just you know and I sort of don't want to speak to soon is but like I've loved talking to you right and at no point has my talking to you felt to me difficult or strained I feel like I'm just vibing out with someone who I've only just met
  • we all mask to an extent for different reasons

  • Is it dead or something else?
  • The rules are excellent and fast-paced with like really interesting game mechanics.
  • If they're discontinuing War Cry, then they should put all of the rules up as free PDFs on the download section of the Warhammer community site.
  • Remake Mordheim. I've seen a lot of speculation online about how that's maybe something that they're going to do if War Cry is, you know, truly gone, and I don't think it' work out well for anyone.
  • Just because there's like a skirmish sci-fi game, right, Kill Team, which is on its like third edition at this point now, doesn't mean that there has to be a skirmish fantasy game, I suppose.
  • War Cry was a great game that was a bit hog tied by having an entire season of expensive meat tree box releases, right? But maybe also it was also hog tied just by being a fantasy themed game, right?
  • I personally identify more as a science fiction gamer, but War Cry did have fun and elegant rules and some pretty great models and great kind of list building mechanics and all that kind of stuff, but I probably would have enjoyed it even more if it was Sciry more so than the current version of Kill Team for sure.

  • It's the only game where I don't teach the rules before we start playing. I just steal a card and say, "Do you want another one? There is 12, 11, 10. You don't want the same one." Boom. Oh, you're out. Haha. You lose.
  • But flip seven is just it's even less. Flip seven is just like the perfect breakdown game.

  • The animation studio closed a couple right at the end of the pandemic. the animation studio didn't close and we switched to focus fulltime on board game
  • My least favorite part is watching other people play deck building games, right? Uh, and so Zach was like, 'Dude, can we come up with a game, a deck building game where you play on other people's turns?'
  • And Zach was like, I worked so hard on that and now it's just gone. I don't want to make the stuff advertising what someone else is doing. I want to make the stuff that people want.
  • And that that was like a big change for our company, a big shift for our company.
  • So, the the going for high level of production is a huge risk because if you go for that high level of production and you say this is what it's going to be and you don't fund very well, you will lose your shirt because it is very expensive.
  • In essence, to boil down Austin's answer, it's money, Reggie.
  • The magical part of what unlocked this one was that you don't know what is going to score at the beginning of the game. There's nothing scoring and the players through winning bids get to decide something on the map that is now scoring points.
  • We have um a a end of the year campaign that is going to be a co-op deck builder.
  • It's gotten jumbled and we're trying to fix time. Okay.
  • We have three games launching at Gen Con that I want to give y'all, which are three small box games.
  • My one question is, why isn't every publisher willing to or able to have IV Studios high level of production? Genuinely curious. Is it a money thing or a skill thing?
  • Do you have any contact with other companies that run kind of like you to have some exchange of experiences?
  • We saw you first. You know, I kind of bumped into you at your booth at Pack Show 2021 and we talked and that's when you gave us Moon Rakers and we now have the big Moon Rakers. We love I love Moon Rakers.

Quotes (from this video)
  • What? Wingspan can be played cooperatively? What are you talking about?
  • two-player Wingspan without the Ottoa character because when you're playing two-player Wingspan, the pink powers get implicitly weaker
  • Nectar is my least favorite thing that's ever been added because nectar just makes the game like you're playing with training gloves
  • If you're going to play Wingspan in any form as a two-player game, including Asia, including with the hummingbirds, do the tiniest bit of extra work to learn the rules for the Ottoa player, because that instantly makes two-player Wingspan so much better
  • Wingspan is better as a co-op game than it is as a solo game or as a competitive game
  • These hummingbirds are well thematically they're wonderful

  • I don't care about it.
  • They have multiple multiple uh points of view which I was fine following the one person.
  • I just found it to be maybe the last book will bring everything back together, but I doubt it. I just don't care anymore.
  • Look, I'm okay with characters dying and things that you need that to progress a story sometimes, but good grief. Does it have to be that bad all the time?
  • The mobs are out there and the mobs are going to hunt you down and no matter what you say.
  • It has definitely become a witch hunt in many ways where people like as soon as they hear the word the letters AI, they're like, 'I'm out.'
  • I think the backlash is and people going and rating games one on BoardGameGeek is kind of ridiculous.
  • That has nothing to do with the game. It really doesn't. That's that's just nonsensical.
  • I'm kind of mind-boggled with how much people complain about prices of games.
  • Yes, games are expensive. They're really expensive to make.
  • You don't go yell at your gas station attendant, you shouldn't when gas goes up. That's not them who are doing it.
  • It should be a friendly place to go to.
  • I always try to put some monkeys in my zoo, period. Just so I can say I have some monkeys.
  • I dislike the cat character a lot and I found it to be okay.
  • But I will warn you, I noticed that a lot of people when they do this, they also forget about the part where they you should make money.
  • Wash it in the shower?
  • If I ran BoardGameGeek, if I saw someone rate a one with a comment of 'I hate what they did here.' I would just delete that rating instantly.
  • I think are you kidding me? This is so nonsensical.
  • I love going to bookstores.

  • I get kind of a hairbrained idea, and then I just kind of lean in without really thinking about the consequences, the amount of work involved, and the bystanders who are impacted by that.
  • The designer of a million expansions known as Dominion
  • You know, like this is an expansion where we know that there's going to be some of you SOBs out there who are going to buy it whether or not it's good because if it exists, you need to have it in that box.
  • It might make the game actually worse, but I kind of need to check it out. I need to know.
  • I know that they can undermine the aspect of actually playing them.
  • Sometimes hit great. But then also occasionally it is it is just, oh, this is more rules for as much if not less fun.
  • there there are some stinkers as part of expansion month that we're covering too.
  • Was that a mistake? You know, like and kind of reflecting on the past.
  • Expansions take up a lot of space in this hobby, but especially in the review space, I feel like they are much under appreciated and under represented.
  • Lords of Waterdeep when Skullport was added was this like oh, you took a base favorite game of mine and added this competitive piece that I simultaneously want to engage with and also very much do not want to end up the most corrupted player.
  • I loved Spirit Island so much and then to be introduced to like oh, there I already thought this game was like as good as it can be and then getting Jagged Earth and it's like oh, the challenges like getting it better.

  • The secret to Dominion. So, you have a game I had a a classic game uh called Evolution from the 90s.
  • The secret to Dominion... is that instead of having a tableau, we've taken everything about your position and shuffled it away into this deck and you're only dealing with a small portion of it at once in your hand.

  • You have to plan out your actions.
  • So you're constantly managing this inventory of tokens of houses that you can build up.
  • The unique part is that the assistant action where you just spread out your assistant.
  • That's really is unique. It's very Yokohama. Like I have not played any games that's quite like that actually.
  • So, this is the Dungeon Crawler Carl version of the game already out by John D. Clair called Unstoppable, which is a card crafting building game based on the popular lit RPG series Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman.
  • Unstoppable was my in my top games of last year.
  • It's a game where Yeah, it takes card crafting to like a three-dimensional level almost because you are endorsing two cards together and one of them is a threat, and you have to defeat that threat for it to then join your hand as a card that you play, and then you can upgrade that twice, which makes the card stronger, but also the threat stronger.
  • Your deck is your enemy. Your enemy got bitten and then that becomes your deck by flipping it and then once it's cycle out and then it becomes enemy again and so on and just like this what do you call it? The treaty cycle? Yeah, it's a thing.

  • The Graft is one of the new factions that just came out and it doesn't have a fortress. What it does is it has one piece on the board which moves around and that is their fortress. So, it's actually a mobile piece and it's big amoeba type thing.
  • That's that's nonsense. Um where things like saving the game, the math, the upkeep is made trivial by the video.
  • I have Frostpunk the board game. I have Frostpunk the computer game. They're the same game, but they are entirely different experiences.
  • As much as I love Agemonia, it's a 30-minute setup each time we play because we're having to get all of these things out and these things and these things and these things. And that's just the nature of the game.
  • No.
  • Give me a good Uwe Rosenberg game, Feast for Odin. Feast for Odin solo, I love it. It's a beat your own score game, but I I love it.
  • The reason why it was a bad experience for me is the solo mode for Perseverance is a very good solo mode at recreating what another player would do, but it was so far beyond my comfort level I really struggled.
  • My favorite game in that category is probably either Tower Up or Ingenious. I might have to give it to Ingenious just because of my personal story with that game and the fact that I can play it with Vicky and her family and things like that.
