welcome to the jungin schemes impressions vlog today we'll be covering four new games that I was able to play recently in fact I played all four of these at an extra life 24 hour board gaming marathon for charity that was hosted by Annette from the netters plays a YouTube channel and Eric from Lee what's Erik playing blog and I was able to play lots of games and I'll discuss four of them now now I'll be going through them in alphabetical order but before we go into that I would like to ask that if you enjoy this video you please click the like button for it down below as well as a subscribe button for the channel also if you would like to directly support the channel and the creation of future vlogs like this one then please go to Jong it's Gamescom slash support there you'll find a bunch of ways that you can really help things out and some of them have pretty cool perks like voting on a couple of the videos that I film each month alright let's now jump into the list and the first game in alphabetical order is campy creatures now this is a game that I had never heard of before I looked it up and it was published by keymaster Games back in 2017 now this game was actually donated to the marathon and one of the people there wanted and they were like hey let's read the rules and play this right now so that's what we did now what's going on in this game is each player is given a hand of identical cards well I guess they all have the same sets of cards and they range from 0 up to 9 in their values now every single card has a monster on top of it and each card also has an effect so this is the type of game where everybody is going to simultaneously select one of their remaining cards and then they will reveal them all at the same time and then a couple things will happen the first thing is some of these cards have immediate effects and I want to evaluate

all of those starting with the highest value and going down then each player can gather a mortal card that's in the middle of the table once again starting from the high value cards and going down so these mortal cards are going to give you points for a variety of things some of them just give you straight-up points like 2 or 4 and others will give you more points if you have more of those specific mortals at the end of the game or at the end of the round that is now there's a decent variety of these different mortals and you're gonna play through several rounds to the game I can't remember exactly how many it was and every single turn you just reveal a card play it too and then you have less cards in your hand now when you play this out you will likely end with 1 2 3 cards that will at the end because some of the effects that you can play can cause you to discard other cards for your opponents hands they can choose a card to discard and they no longer have access to that you also have cards that can negate the effects of your opponent's one lets you take two mortals instead of one but it's a relatively low value card so if lots of people go before you then you don't get that benefit now what you do is you just keep going through that until you essentially run out of your cards in your hand you go through a certain set of turns and then you go through a certain set of rounds now I thought this game was pretty fun actually I was not expecting much going into it considering I had never heard of it before in general I'm not crazy about simultaneous action selection games but this game seemed to be pretty streamlined and it really worked you know the mortals that you're getting give you a decent amount of tension some of them are just negative points so that means in that round maybe you intentionally try to go high so that you're not one of the last people to take a mortal card because there's

always a number of them out equal to the number of players now there's ways you can get around that because for instance there is a Swamp Thing card that you can play out and that lets you take a mortal and immediately give it to somebody else now a somatically the worst card that you can take I think is the diver it's worth minus three points so it kind of makes sense that you are going to want to swamp thing the diver to give it to somebody else so that they will lose those points instead of you so I really liked the overall flow of the game there were lots of high and fun low moments obviously since this is a simultaneous action selection game you will have behind times where you reveal things and you're like oh my gosh I picked the wrong card I can't believe you picked that card I didn't think you would because obviously this is the kind of game where you're trying to get into your opponent's heads to see what they're gonna do to figure out which card you should play at the right moment now there was one hilarious moment where every single person that picked to the same card so there's this card called the mummy and when you play that out as an instant effect if any other player played a kaiju card then the mummy player can immediately take immortal instead of waiting for their turn now the kaiju card is the most powerful one in your hand it doesn't have any special effects it's just the largest number and in that round there was a lot of really good cards out there so that means everyone around the table was thinking somebody is gonna play the kaiju so that they have the most initiative so they can take one of those good mortals and I am going to streamline off of that play the mummy so that I can grab a mortal for the kaiju does it was just funny because every single player around the table was the exact same thing in that

moment and we got a really big laugh out of that now there were several other moments where a couple people would play similar cards and there is a tiebreaking mechanic where you have two these little tokens in the middle of the table and every single round at the highest token that would say a knight I will shuffle down to the bottom so you will have good moments in bad moments as you play the same type of cards and when the dust settled at the end of the game I can't actually remember if I know I did not win I did not come close to winning I remember now but all four of us sat there and said this it was fun like I don't think anyone was saying wow this is amazing I have to go get a copy for myself but I don't think any of us had high expectations going into the game and all of us were pleasantly surprised at how well the game just worked it's a really good distillation of the simultaneous selection type of game it's a really good distillation of the mechanics of trying to get inside of the heads of your opponents and like I said when you have these reveal moments in games there can be some really fun circumstances and there were a decent amount of laughs going around even though this is not actually a funny game now it is worth mentioning that the art in this game I think is just great I love the artistic aesthetic in this game all the way through so this is a game that I would not mind playing again in the future but again I'm not crazy about simultaneous action selection games so I don't think it's one that I'm going to try to hunt out for my collection all right let's now move on to the second game and this one is Hospital Connect now this is a game that came out back in 2015 and I have been kind of hearing about it ever since the first reason for that is because it has a really funky name that is German and I

think Hospital Connect is as close as I can get to pronounciating that correct but apparently the definition of that is a crank worker of low intelligence so essentially a low skilled worker who winds a crank how the matically what's going on in this euro style game is players are essentially trying to do coal mining back in like the dark ages I'm not sure exactly what time it is but it's at a time when there are not that many roads the land is covered in forests and this is just very low-tech coal mining now this is a euro style game and there are some pretty cool things going on here I'm just gonna tell you right out at the front that I was really impressed with his game now what you were trying to do is each round you are drafting these little action tokens now there is a board out in the middle of the table and there are a couple different color action tokens on it you have yellow there's black and then there are also great tokens now you are going to draft up to five of these tokens and you're gonna keep going around the table twice now you could potentially take all five tokens in the first draft because there are these pools out there and you select a pool and you take all of the tokens of one color from that pool now these are put out randomly and you can kind of see how they're coming from future rounds and that means if five of a token go into one of those slots you can just take that for your first action and then pass on the second draft now after you do that you then look to see the value of the tokens that you've taken and again you can take up to five but if you have less than five then that means your overall value will be less now that's a good thing because you then look to the turn order and the person with the lowest value actions will then and go

first and then second third and fourth etc now after this point everyone is essentially programming with these tokens they're gonna put them down onto these action selection spots on their board now these are effectively workers you have a coal miner type person there's a farmer person and an assistant and each one of them can do different things depending on what color tokens you put down on top of them now you can only select one action for each of these within each given round and obviously you're trying to use your tokens the best you can but in an interesting twist here like I said you don't need to have five tokens and I found that you could be very viable in this game not taking five every single round of the game now you are gonna go through many rounds in the game I can't remember exactly how many it is it's something like six or nine of these drafting rounds but what you're trying to do is get your infrastructure bill together in order to get coal mined out because at the end of every year you're going to score that coal yeah I think you play over three years and there are three action phase this is per year so I think we did a nine overall draft phases so the way this works is you're gonna have to actually like dig down into your mind so you have to get wood in order to put the struts up so you can get down there and then you're also gonna have to actually command your different people to go down there and gather up this coal a big problem with coal mining I think all the time but especially back in this time was water now obviously as you dig deeper into the ground the the water tables are down there in waters just gonna seep out from the walls and fill up these shafts so what happens is you're gonna have to spend actions to

get water out of your coal mine in order to actually get the coal out of it so what you're doing is you're playing through all of these different rounds trying to draft the correct tokens in order to do all the actions that you want and one big thing that is in this game is what I would essentially call a tech tree now there are four different layers to it and there are these hexagons and you shuffle them up if you want to within each given layer and one of the actions that you can do is you can have your farmer develop technology now in this game that might just be making a rope or getting a bucket or something like that and these technologies will give you extra immediate benefits sometimes it will also give you ongoing options as well as sometimes X response you can kind of activate and tweak on your turn now all of these things that you're doing are gonna be giving you points in a bunch of different ways that I won't really go into but I will say that the sooner you go down onto one of those technologies the more points that you will get to and the farther down the track you go the more points you get for those tacks now that is the general situation for how the game starts and at a certain point you are going to mind all of your coal from your pit and at that point you essentially dig down and start really digging out a cavern now at that point you actually move a cardboard token onto your board and you have a couple new actions and since you are sending people down into this mine they can mine for the coal but you actually need somebody to crank that coal back out with a bucket now this is where I believe the hash spell connect comes into play the person who actually cranks that wheel to pull up in the coal and water that you're trying to get out of the mine is called the hospital connect and I guess that is a very important role in the overall flow of this game which is why

the game is probably called that so we were able to play a four player game of this and as I said at the beginning I was really quite taken with the game now this is not a copy of mine in fact it's somebody I met at that board game marathon they brought a copy and they had had it for years and they had only played it once and they were really hoping to play it again they had walked around and they said I have this really dry euro I want to teach and I saw that it was house ball connection and I decided that I definitely wanted to jump into that game because I've been interested in trying this out for so long now I have to say that I really liked the action drafting mechanism in this game there's a lot to think about there because obviously you are selecting these from these diminishing pools and in fact in a four player game two out of those four areas will actually add water into your coal mine if you take from them in your first draft so again you can go around the table twice so you have two shots to try and get up to five of these action tokens and if you really like one of those sets down at the bottom you will suffer a penalty of taking any water so there was some really great tension trying to figure out which one of these to take because the higher quality the tokens are the farther back in turn order you will be and that means on the next round you will have a worse position for the tokens that you can get for the next actions now once you actually get to doing your actions in this game it kind of feels like a programming game with not a lot of buttons to press but the buttons that you're pressing are pretty darn interesting obviously there is this cycle of things you're trying to do you're trying to send your people out to gather the coal but you don't want to do that too much because you might get to the point where you have all of these coal actions but no more coal together because you need more wood creating

actions to put wood down into your mind in order to dig deeper so you have to really balance these things out now the most valuable of the action tokens is a yellow and that lets you get food and you go through three years in this game and after doing three action phases which are I guess spring summer and fall you then do a winter phase where you have to feed your people effectively although it's just a set amount of food or haulers which is essentially money that you have to spend now interestingly enough in this game money is incredibly rare and I suppose that somatically probably makes sense because it's like a metal coin and this is like the Dark Ages in the middle of nowhere where you are literally digging coal out of the ground with like wooden sticks and shovels and stuff so having a metal coin is a pretty big deal so we played through the whole game it went at a pretty good clip and I at about the halfway point I started to realize that I was really doing well like I was kind of focusing on getting technologies I got more technologies than anybody else and things just seemed to be going well for me and as I said way back in the beginning there were many turns where I only got four of the action tokens instead of five now the reason of that is because if you come back around to the second phase of the draft and you perhaps have like three tokens then that means that you can only take one or two more tokens to get to the max of five but if the pool of stuff within one of those little pools is three or more you can't take it you were not allowed to take it some you have to take all so sometimes I just found myself in a situation where I would take like maybe three in the first round and the second round would come along and I could either take one or three and obviously you can't take three because

that goes over the limit so I take one now I started to feel a little bit bummed about this the first few times said I did it but then I also looked out the scoring track and I realized that I was doing just really well I think a big part of that has to do with the fact that I was able to get a lot of those technologies going I think that is a very important part of this game after this play I'm not confident you can actually win if you don't really go hard on those technologies maybe you can I don't know I've only played once but when the dust settled at the end of this game I won by a longshot leg I can't remember the exact scores but but all three of my opponents were within like 15 20 points and I think I was like 30 or 40 points ahead of all of them now a big part of that is because some of the technologies I went to gave me endgame scoring for other technologies that I had already taken also you just get a lot of points for being the first one to go to technologies and I was just going really hard at that while my opponents were really focusing on trying to you know gather coal and whatnot so I think that's pretty much gonna wrap up my position on this game at the moment there's really no reason to go into more of the details I will say that this is a game that I very much want to play again it was not as heavy as I expected for some reason that would I hear a game with a big German name like Hospital connected like oh my gosh your Middle Ages coal mining I just assumed it is gonna be a heavy game but it was not our game was probably closing on two hours because we were in the middle of a board game marathon and there was lots of distractions and it was a first game so well I guess it was technically a second game but it was a first game in a while for the teacher so we were looking back to the rules a decent bit but it feels like this is a 90-minute style euro and

it's definitely my type of euro game I obviously don't own a copy of this one but I am hoping to play this one in the future maybe I will seek out a copy or maybe I'll just be able to play a bad board game conventions and whatnot but either way I was very impressed by Hospital connect and yeah looking forward to play him more okay let's now go into the third game and this one is Queens now this is a brand new least from mandu games and I first word about this because W Eric Martin put out a video on the BoardGameGeek YouTube channel kind of overlaying how the game worked and I thought it looked pretty interesting so I was a pretty happy to be able to play a three player game of this at the marathon and it was relatively quick in fact our three player game took I think about thirty minutes total now the way this game works is you are essentially trying to cultivate flower fields in front of you to get the most points now when it's your turn you have one of two options available the first option is you can it take tiles from a grid in the middle of the table now there is a little farmer pond that kind of walks around the grid and you can take three different colored flowers from the row or column that the farmer is currently looking at now instead of taking three different ones you could take two of the same color flower or if you want to take a tile with bees on and you can take only one tile that has bees so you will try to select the tiles that work for you and you put them into your own little supply and then the farmer is going to move clockwise around the board equal to the number of tiles that you took so if you took three tiles that'll move three times and if you took one tile it'll just move one time so you have some control over where that farmer will be for your opponent's turns now the other thing you can do on your turn is instead of taking tiles and moving the farmer you can look over to the side of the

board and to take a field tile now these are all five spaced polyomino kind of Tetris e puzzle pieces and you take those and you put them down in front of you now if you have any already you have to put a jacent to your previously placed ones and you then have to fill the field up with the flower tile so that you have already been drafting from the middle of the table on previous turns now you have to fill this new field up entirely and if you don't have enough flowers you can fill it in also with some of these little bee house tokens and then what you do is you just score all of the jacent colors that are in that area you have to have at least two tiles that are the same color next to it and you just get one point per tile so what that means is you will then bring this field over you'll score those points and then you're gonna take new turns taking the tiles and in the future when you take a new fields and fill them in you want to put them adjacent to some of the sets of flowers that you already have so if you're able to get like three of the yellow flower scored right now and you get some more yellow tiles then you can bring that in and put more yellow down and you essentially score for the flowers that you already placed previously if you were able to get the new ones adjacent to those old ones now once the game ends and I believe that it happens once anyway person takes their fifth field tile you will then do a some final scoring one of the things you'll get points for are the bees that are orthogonal II or diagonally adjacent to all of your little bee houses that are placed out in your area so obviously there is a tempo aspect to this game it ends when somebody takes that fifth tile and one thing that I said I think right at the very beginning of the game when we started playing was it seems like somebody could just kind of rush to the

end game they could just keep taking three tiles from the middle of trying to take three different tiles and just get more of these filled tiles land your opponent's obviously if you do that then you are not getting many or any of those B tiles in the middle so you're not going to get good scoring from that but I was kind of curious to see how that would go and in the first few rounds of this game it just seemed like I kept having good opportunities to take three different colored flowers in fact I would take three and then I was able to take three or two more and they kind of matched up with the previous ones so I essentially did a race version of this game I think I only took one or two tiles throughout the whole game that had bees on them and I did not actually score any of those beads once the game was over however what happened was I was able to rush the endgame and I got more fields out than any of my opponents and there is a benefit for scoring all four of the different colors the first person to do this gets more points than anyone else and I was able to do this because I was just going for my blitz field strategy and I was able to win the game by a handful of points now the person who came in second was Eric and he's played this game many times and his score was very much be focused he got a ton of points from those bees and again I got zero points from them but I was able to just barely edged him out on points so it was kind of interesting to see that you could play this game in two very different ways there are lots of different ways you can get points in the game and I think maybe focusing on one or the other does seem like a good idea now when it was all over I found myself just really happy with a game I mean obviously I like winning but I also enjoyed playing the game I kind of expected that I would but the decisions

that you're making are just kind of fun and puzzly and not too terribly deep but also interesting enough for a 30 to 40 minute game now this was Eric's copy in fact I think it was a pre-production early copy that he's had for a few months so I do not have a copy to play again but I quite interested in playing this one more as a kind of super filler style game that might be like 30 to 40 minutes I think that it really fits the bill I think it's got a really neat to step thing going to the game where you have to spend a turns to get the titles and then spend turns to cash in the towns that you already had and obviously trying to puzzle all this stuff together it can be quite intriguing as well so at the end of the day my initial impression of Queens is quite high and I hope to have opportunities to play this one more in the future at this point we've now reached the fourth and final game I'll be talking about today and that one is raised for the Chinese zodiac now this is a game that is been recently released it was a Kickstarter from cap stone games and I should mention right at the outset that I was paid to make a tutorial style playthrough for this game and that was many months ago now as earlier on in this year so I was paid to make content for the game but I was eventually able to get a real copy of it a published copy of the game and I was able to play it at the board game day now I actually played a Nets copy because she also got a review copy from capstone games and this is a simultaneous action selection game that has quite a bit going on now this plays up to five players and we did play a five player game and it was effectively a first game for all of us considering I sort of played it once when I made my

playthrough but again that was like almost a year ago at this point so I only kind of remembered some of the rules now what you're trying to do in this game is you're trying to win a race the game is called race for the Chinese zodiac after all and everybody is controlling a animal token now you're effectively trying to get to the end and the order in which you get to the end is thematically the order in which the Chinese zodiac will be built out and I guess this is actually a kind of myth or a tale that goes into how the actual Chinese zodiac was done so this game is mechanically built around trying to mimic a story that already exists now mechanically the way the game works is each player has a hand of cards and they have two different types of cards they have action cards and those are numbered from 1 all the way up to 8 and then you also have energy cards now each round everyone will simultaneously choose an action card from their hand and an energy card from their hand and they will put them facedown once everybody selects you will reveal these and then what you do is starting with a low number and going up you valuate each one of the actions now you will firstly look to see if anybody else has picked the same action you have and you then add the energy card value of your selection with the energy card value of theirs so if I put down a 1 energy with my Run action and Annette put down a 3 energy with her Run action then we add that 3 to that 1 and we have 4 then what we do is we look to the wheel in the middle of the table we find the Run area and you'll notice that each one of the spots has two different thresholds so you look to the spot that

matches up with the overall amount of energy that was expended towards that action from all of the players and then the benefit is going to go to the players depending on what action it is now by and large the benefits are going to go to the player who played to the highest energy card some times and the players who don't still get a consolation prize but more often than not the person who doesn't does not get anything so this is definitely a game where you're trying to get into the mindset of your opponent's trying to see what they are planning on doing and every single round after you reveal all of the cards and play through all of them you then rotate the dial in the middle of the table once so this means the benefits for each one of the actions is slowly shifting and you can of course plan ahead and see what they will be from round to round because it always goes clockwise now all this means you have a lot of things to think about and on top of all of that each player has an asymmetric benefit that is unique to their racing animal for instance I was the pig and what that meant is whenever I played the individual highest or lowest action value card then I got a benefit of whooping once on the racetrack or I could take a karma token or I could take an energy card now you have to balance the fact that you are trying to figure out what everybody else wants to do with their asymmetric abilities and we weren't playing it at 5 players but I'm happy to say that it worked pretty darn well at 5 now the first few rounds of this game were a bit slow and clunky because obviously we were all very fresh to the game experience and it's a bit unusual in general when you have games where you select a card simultaneously you don't select two of them so you not only have to figure out which of the action cards

you want but also which of the energy cards you want now as you're playing throughout the round you're going to find yourself in a situation where you might need to play the highest value card which is strategize which pulls all of your cards back up into your area now you have to do that if you running out of energy or you have to do that with your last energy card in your hand so there is a tempo to this game as some people are kind of high and kind of low and other times when people just strategize at a strange time to try and kind of reset the clock now the reason I say reset their clock is because whatever you put these cards out you have to pay a penalty if you play an action card that is a lower value within the previously played card these penalties are spent in these karma tokens and this means you are very much incentivized to start low and go high but you might find yourself kind of going with like a one three and a five and then jumping all the way back down to a two two client try and get a benefit that's really good in that moment and trying to throw your opponents off but you could only do that if you have the Karma tokens to spend if you are two or more lower than your previous card you just have to spend it to karma and if the card is just one lower than the previous one then you spend one so as I said the first few rounds were a bit clunky as we were trying to process all of these things but once we got to I know maybe five to seven rounds into the game things really did seem to pick up in their pace now this is not an especially short game I think that our five player game did end up going probably 90 minutes or maybe a little bit more but again there was a lot of distractions at this board game marathon and it was a first game and honestly those first few rounds were quite slow as we kind of figured out where we were going so obviously this is

going to be a game with some big wins and losses considering if you are not the highest action for most of the actions you don't get anything now in general I don't like it when I essentially get my turn skipped in games but it seemed like it happened so often to so many people that it kind of evened out and I was okay with it now it was quite fascinating trying to get into the mindset of other people because you have to consider not only is somebody else going to do the action you want to do but what energy card will they play because you might say well that's fine you know I've got a 5 right here and I don't think they have any fives so I think I have this in the bank but if they play a 2 or 3 then that is a 5 plus 2 or 7 which is going to push us out of the overall grouped energy threshold so that I now get the benefit that I don't want so maybe I actually play a lower energy card considering the fact that other people might go into that spot but hope that my energy card is higher than theirs so that the overall threshold does not get pushed up to the point where we don't get the good thing or vice-versa you might say I want to get to that higher threshold so I'll play a really high energy card or when I maybe don't need to in order to get that extra benefit so obviously you are trying to consider all of these things and I think at the end of the day I enjoyed my play of this game but it's not necessarily one I'm gonna be seeking out to play more now the reason if that is once again because there are lots of missed turn actions in the game and also as I said earlier when I discussed camping creatures I'm not generally a huge fan of simultaneous selection type games now I like the fact that that means that everybody is kind of always in the game and there's not much downtime but I'm

not too crazy about the mind game aspect of it or trying to say you know are they gonna do this are they gonna do that and then inevitably doing the wrong thing there were a couple moments where somebody's amazing plan was just totally wrecked because they could not believe that somebody else was gonna do that other thing and you know you just reset and go into the next turn and you know that pain of that missed action it fades relatively quickly but at the same time it still had fun losing out on entire turn actions now obviously things can get pretty swingy and in fact I started out doing really well in this game and then had a lot of problems in the middle of the game it just seemed like everybody started rushing ahead of me but then I had a to return stretch that was just amazing over the course of these two turns I was able to move forward four or five times in each of those and both times it was because I tied with the same person across the table and both times that he did not play an energy card and it would work for the situation so in both of those circumstances they got nothing which was kind of awful for them and in both of those circumstances I got tons of stuff and I rocketed right back into the middle of the pack now obviously that was fun for me and it did not like wreck that person's day but they were certainly bummed that two turns in the road they gave me a ton of benefit and they got nothing now perhaps they should have played a little bit differently but either way that is how the overall game went now once everything was done and the game was over I came in second and another player came in first and they kind of broke out to a mid to late game lead maybe two-thirds the way through the game and nobody else was able to really catch them I did have that really great sprint up but even then I was not able to get that close to them and they were

able to play relatively safely for the last couple terms of the game to slowly work their way to the finish line and that finished the game and they won and I think everybody was fascinated by the game overall but I'm not sure how like infatuated anybody was with the game I think a big part of that is because this was a first play of a game with some pretty interesting systems obviously this has some mechanics that seem familiar like it simultaneously choosing cards from your hand but the way you have to consider what your opponents might do and what energy cards they might have and how those energy cards might affect the actors that you want to do just gives lots of layers so this is probably one of the heaviest simultaneous action selection games that I've ever played I think that this is the game that I would not mind playing more in the future but as I said before it's not one that it made me particularly excited I was more just intrigued by how all the systems went and that means I will probably not be pushing to play it I feel like maybe it did go a little bit longer than I wanted it seems to me that if it was more like sixty minutes it would be something that I would be more interested in going after because it was just a lot of rounds going over and over and you are building up a energy supply there are ways to upgrade your energy cards that I won't even bother going into right now but overall it just overstated welcome a little bit but it was super intriguing and again I would not mind trying it again in the future well that's gonna bring us to the end of this impressions vlog I was actually able to play five different new games at that board game marathon but I'm trying to keep these vlogs a little bit shorter so I'll talk about the fifth new game in a future vlog which I'll probably be doing at some point next week so I think

that's gonna bring us to the end as always I'd like to thank everyone who's been supporting this channel including all of these producers level patreon backers if you two would like to directly support the channel and the creation of videos like this one then please go to junkets Gamescom slash support to see a variety of ways with which you can do that also if you enjoy this video please click the like button down below as well as the subscribe button for the channel thanks for watching
