Board Gaming Ramblings May 5, 2025
Transcript 17:13

Hello everyone. This is Cinear and this is Johannes and you are watching Born Gaming Ramblings and welcome back to keep or call where we play all of the games. All of them and decided whether to keep them in the collection or call them out of the collection. Yes, we are ready for a few more games today. I think we have like nine games and I think all of them we never played before. So this is like some of them most of them are from the shelf of shame. Not all of them because some got in this year, but there is like a a big different kind of games. I think we're just going to start with the biggest game of them all. It's about a house. It's the man eating houseun. And yes, you are right. This is a tricktaking game. Your final guess from the box. Are you ready? Yes. One, two, three. Boom.

It's a double keep maneating house. Yeah. I thought it was really fun. it when you explain the rules about the dog and the old man and the the the children and the ghosts and the weapons and the weapon is a yo-yo and a karina and like a camera and salt and stuff like yes I was just like this is a weird game but it's not that weird it is but it it was a really fun twist on a trick taking game and it's one where you're playing teams and it was really fun and it's a one round game. So, it's very easy and quick. Some trick taking games, that's like my main negative for trick taking games sometimes is they sometime kind of outstate their welcome, especially the first time you play them because you don't know them as like, oh, it's five rounds and you play for an hour. And this was great because it's like 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and it's a lot of fun. Next up, we are going to go to Wizards and Code. This is a review copy.

We're always trying to do that. That first one was not. Let's do this one. Yes. One, two, three, boom. It's a double cow. This is a game from designers I really like like Virginia Giggley and Flaminia Brasini known for some of our favorite games of all time. They made games for example called Grand Australia Hotel. This is Grand Otel. No, this is a weird game. It is like it's one of those This is not so much that it's a bad game, but that it's not for us. Mhm. This is one of those games where you have cards in your hand, you're playing them to a location and then you can trigger yourself like, "Aha, I attack you and then when all of the cards around one location is filled up, you're going to reveal if somebody plays card pays down." And then you're going to be like, "Oh, this card I play is a card that kills all the ogres in this place," for example. So you like lose all your cards and trying to get gems, not trying to get the negative gems and and it was not just not fun.

Yeah, you're trying to outsmart your opponents in that you're laying something at your location and they think there's something else and they play a card that is not good for you card. And I can see people liking this game, but I did not 100%. Next up, we are going to have Cargo Empire. Yes, this was a a Kickstarter. I think I backed it. Are you ready? One, two, three, boom. It's a double cow. This was very much on the edge. Oh, yes. I was very unsure because I had fun with this game. It was great. It's a delivery game. Uh the the um pickup part. Yeah, the pickup part is is gone. But you are basically um trying to deliver stuff from one location to another and you you do that by paying for like the transport in between. So it's no payment with money but you're using transport cards. So a ship card or two car cards and a train card for example to transport the good from one city to another. and where you transport to. You will get like a marker, so you will get points for that at the end of the game depending on your private goals and also uh the state of the city. I thought it was a fun game. I enjoy myself a lot. I think this is a great game. This is a case of too many games.

Yes, this is a case of we're already overflowing and we're trying to get rid of games and this was fun and I would not be sad to ever play to play it again, but it's not I'm not going to be like it was fun. I enjoyed it. I would maybe rate it a 7.5 after like my first impressions of it, but it's not one where I'm going to be like, "Oh, I need to play it again." Yeah, I'm looking at the back and be like, "Oh, I'm so on the edge. Maybe I want to keep it." But it's too many games. Although this was fun in a month or two months or half a year, you're kind of going to forget that it is. Yes. Yes. And if you remember it, you be like that was fun, but it was a really solid one from mobile ideas. Next up, we have a game that's been on the shelf for a while. It was a crowdfunding campaign called Dumpier. It is from Rolla and Costa, which made great games like for example the one from last year, which was very good. Stevens. Yes. And also they did lot which was a great game.

This is like their take on the whitical genre of making wine. Are you ready? Yes. One, two, three, boom. It's a double cow. I enjoyed this game. I had fun with it. It was a bit long for what it is and a bit it was tight in some fun ways. It was it it was there's like nothing I didn't one thing I really liked about this game is the action selection because you have these like rows of actions and every time you have to move one up and you do that action and you have to pay for the action by paying for the action that you done the least. You're kind of trying to not do one action, but you know what you need to do that action and everything is more expensive and you never have enough money for the things you want to do. I really enjoyed that. But it was more for me one of those games where I played it.

I liked it. I don't need to play it again. Yeah, it was really it was a really interesting game. The action selection, as you said, is the most interesting thing about this game. Uh it is super tight and also I I felt multiple times when I played this game that it was a little hard to really if you are in kind of um if you put yourself in a bad position, it's a little hard to get out of it. And then the part where you're trying to struggle to get back a float because you have spent all your money on doing something that was not that fun. And also you're not making wine, you're making champagne. Just to make that clear before somebody's like, it's a completely different thing. Next up, we have Star Realms Rise of Empire. Yes, great title. This sounds weird. Is this actually okay to say in English? We don't know because we're Norwegian.

Because for me it felt like it should be Rise of the Empire and not just Rise of Empire. It's upside down. Is it? Yes, it is. Now it's not anymore. This is a legacy game. That's how you write it. We backed it or I backed it. And now we actually play the whole thing. Yeah. Are you ready? Yes. One, two, three. Boom. Double kill. Not just because we played the whole thing, but also because this is the worst legacy game I've ever played. This is Yes. This is not a legacy game. You cannot take a game. The only reason we played it is because Storms is fun. Oh, yeah. And it took us four hours to play the whole thing. That's good. And it was a short Stars is fun. I'm not This is your game to talk about, but I can't stop myself because this game you cannot you cannot take a game and put 20 stickers in it and call it a legacy game. No, because that's what this is. It's not going to fly with us. Um, that's what this is. Yes, it is.

Uh, Stars is really fun and I had fun playing Stars with you, but like in terms of legacy games, this is borderline legacy. It's not living up to the genre at all. But luckily, it has a great story. Luckily, the story was very short. Every time you open the chapter boxes, you're just like, "Wow, a card." And I felt like the bad guy the entire time. It was. And also And also it's like one of the factions makes the other person discard a card or draw a card and the other faction gets infinite life. Yeah. I prefer the infinite life thing. Yes. Because that was you. I like in the end to win. I had to basically buy every card that came out that was your upgraded cards because mine were not that good. If you started to heal and you like, "Oh, I'm going to deal you nine damage and heal 10." That's 19 damage in a round. Yeah. And if you're going to play this game and don't want spoilers, don't play this game. Yes, the spoiler is not played because buy another story.

50% of the game play felt exactly the same all the time. In the beginning, it's a little different and at the very end it's a little different, but everything in between exactly the same. You're just playing Star Realms. Yes. And I would not play this version of Star Realms if you're playing Star Realms. Nope. Every time they introduce something new, it's like this doesn't change anything. Nope. And and the rule book is very bad. The rule book is based on you knowing knowing very well how to play Storms because it doesn't explain anything and it's very bad. Uh but I recommend Storms. Yes, but I don't recommend this. Great. This is not Next up, we are looking at Shuffle and Swing. This is another one I back from Bitewing Games, their latest Kickstarter. Are you ready for the thing? Yes. And by the thing, I mean the battle. One, two, three. Boom. Boom. Double count. Yes.

This was fine. I enjoyed parts of it. It's a very easy game. Very light game. You are building instruments. You have a You have cat workers. You have some dice and a mouse that's running around. It is. It was fine. It was fine. The thing is like it I didn't I wasn't bored but I was when I read the rules I was like this sounds fun. Then we started to play it and I was this is not that fun. No, it was okay. Um I liked that when you you choose your action you um also you can choose to activate other players dice. So, uh, which action you do depends on where the dice is are placed and also the value of the dice. And when you do stuff in one area, you get workers that fit to the two other areas.

So, you can't really focus on one area alone. You have to focus on at least two. and you're trying to build part of the instrument for the humans, which is a fun theme, but you also want to brag about making the instrument. I like that. The theme is fun. Yeah, the theme is fun and you're trying to basically it's an area majority game with the possibility to score high points during the game because you can send like a little mouse inspector around just to activate your own stuff um if you're able to. It's it it was fun. If you're into the theme and you like ladder games, maybe it's fun. For me, it was just like a fine game. Next up, video game champion. Yes. Are you ready? Uh this was a review copy. Uh one. Yes.

Two. Three. Boom. Double kill. I like the theme in this one as well. The theme is fantastic. Yes. Because you are a kid and you just want to play video games, but for video games to rent them, you need money. So then you put on your little angel face and ask your mom for or dad for an allowance. You can also put on a lot of baby faces and angel faces and ask for like to buy for them to buy you a game. Yes. It's not like a role playing game. Everybody'll be like, "Can I please have some money?" But the angel faces take up space in your inventory and you also use that for buttons. I don't know. You're explaining this very well right now. People will not be confused at all about how this game works. Well, it's basically an action selection game and you're trying to play the most games and you're trying it's a recipe fulfillment game. You're trying to get the right buttons so you can play the right games and but you only have space for eight things and every time you do like something that your parents doesn't like, you're going to get these like I use which you have to pay back by doing your homework or visiting your grandparents. H So the theme is really good. The game is fine.

Yeah, I liked it, but it was a bit long with four and it was a fine game. Yeah, I agree. Next up, we have another review copy. This is Stock Exchange. Are you ready? Yes. One, two, three, boom. Tell it with fire. This is This is the worst stock game I've ever played. The best thing about this game is the name. Yes. And I was so disappointed. Why are you making a game with such a fun name? And the game is not fun. The most positive thing I can say about this game is that it's short. It's very short. Everything you do feels uninteresting. Everything I do is kind of like I guess I'll do this thing. And the choices in most of these games, right? Like there's few rules and you're trying to make the stock match, the stock market. It's kind of like, oh, but the tension is there and oh, I'm trying to do this here. It's like something happens. It's not interesting.

I'm playing some flowers. I was hoping when I read the rules that it was fun, but it was not. No. And you're saying, yeah, the the the the length of the game, the shortness is a positive. I would like I would say that it's too short actually because the game ended before it got interesting at all. I don't think it would have been interesting at all. I don't think it would have gotten really interesting. Not interesting enough to keep at all. But but yeah, it the decisions felt really meh. It's a game I don't recommend you get it. We have one more, right? Yes. One more game. Tabris. Tabris. This is another one I backed on the crowdfunding thing. If you haven't heard about crowdfunding, it's great. Are you ready? Don't check it out. It will pull you under. Yes. It's a very big box. Like my face is behind it.

Oh, you can put it here. Perfect. Great. Are you ready? It is. Yes. One, two, three, boom. Double count. This is a game. Talk about it. It's your time to shine. I thought this was a Yeah. Well, I had fun while I played. There's nothing wrong with the game. This is also a recipe fulfillment game. and you're moving around on the board, taking actions to get to buy resources or trade them into other resources. It's kind of felt like a mix between Istanbul and Century Spice Road. To me, yes. Um, and the and you have these contracts on your hand that when you get the right resources to fulfill that contract, you will get like movement on a track that will end the game and also give you points and abilities and you will get money that you will use to buy more resources to fulfill more contracts.

Yes. And you can also get some income between rounds and stuff. It was all right. It's a it's a fun game. It has some luck in some dice rolling. the thing. This is another one under the rules. I was like, "This sounds fun." And I played it and it was less fun that it sounded, but it's one that of the pile over there. It's not the bad worst game. This is this is not a case of I think if we were earlier in our board game journey, I think we would have liked it more. I think like if we h if we were not playing heavier games, I think we would be like this is great. I think it's a solid design. For me, it was just like a flying game. Yeah, me too. So, that is it. Nine more games. We called eight of them. That's good. And we kept the smallest one. Oh, I'm so happy. I don't know if we can fit them all in the frame. I don't know. Nothing.

So, what is We have two color piles today. I think we are in agreement of the best and worst experience. So, best of worst game. Best worst stock exchange. Oh, yeah. So, those are the games. Nine more games. You hope you liked it and that we gave you some feelings about these games. For example, good games and bad games. If you liked it, then I have to say this. Subscribe. Well, you said you had to say it. Yes, it's more fun when I do it. And I Haha, I tricked you. And also, you have to do it because it's free and fun. Awesome. Okay, thank you so much for watching. I'm Joannis. I'm Cinema. And you've been watching Board Gaming Ramblings. And bye-bye.
