Ranking All The Games We Played Last Month. The Playlist April 2026
Transcript
Hello and welcome to board stupid. My name's Wayne and I'm Matt and this is another episode of of the playlist.
What's the playlist Matt? On the playlist we ran few of the games that we played last month. So the ones that we want to talk to you about it and we're going to tell you if they're bangers, if they're solid, if they're middle, probably you just have to skip them.
Absolutely. This is the show that you need to watch if you really want to find out what we think about a game. So, if you'd like to join us on that journey,
well, hit the subscribe button.
Do that.
Yeah. And then
let's start with press play.
So, Matt and I managed to play a bunch of games over the Easter weekend, which I am very grateful for.
Yeah.
Amazing time.
Yeah. It's been a busy month cuz we Yeah. you've been away. This was very busy for me at work. It's just like it's been a it's been a nightmare, but we still managed to play quite a lot of games. Um uh we going to few of the games we going to do full reviews. So um some might have been already out, some might are might be coming. Um so we're not going to talk into this, but we got coming out what we thinking about Eternal Decks.
First of all, that's coming soon. Um, we got another full video for the one that might be out, might might be coming out. And then we got an episode on Arkham Horror 2
that has been taking quite a lot of our time.
It's a big
go watch the video and I will tell you everything about that.
But coming up in this show, Matt,
yes. What do we have first? First game you want to talk about. The first game that I'd like to talk about in this show is Iliad by Rhina Kinetsia. So, Iliad is a one versus one game where you're going to be taking a tile, placing it on the board. Uh, in the event of complete rows and columns, try and get the highest score in each row and column. And if you do that, you're going to get a special tile. If you collect all the tiles different colors, you win the game. If you both collect all those tiles, the person with the highest points wins. So, as per the normal rules of this show, me and Matt don't know what each other thinks about this game. We're going to show you.
We're going to show you using one of these cards and then we're going to discuss.
Then we're going to talk about it. Ready? Three, two, one.
What is it? Mint.
No. What? It's a bad start. It's a mid game.
I think to me it's a I'm sorry.
Why is it mid game?
Um, justify yourself. I
I think I think it's not the the best work from Kitia, but it's not a bad game. It's not a It's not a bad game. It's It's between me and Solid. Let's say that. Um my only problems with the game is that it's in it's a two play is a two-player games in uh in a sea of other two-player games that I think are better games than that or more innovative. When when we played it for the first time, I I did ask you, is this a reimplementation from a game from the '90s?
And it's not. It's an original game.
It's new game. It feels like a representation of a of a game from the '90s. It's uh it's it's enjoyable. It's a chessy style game. Um and there is a lot of them
recently as well on the market. A lot of that came out. Uh you got these things about you got two tiles. You need to put one on the board in the specific section that where where you can put it and when when a row and the lines are completed, you write read the numbers on the on the tiles and that's going to be your total score for that line and as you said
um
fair enough.
Yeah, I just I didn't realize I did enjoy it. I don't think it was um rush to it.
No, I would not rush back. I think there are two player games. There are that interest me more. Okay.
But I do see why you love them.
Yeah, I am a Kit fanboy. So why not the only the only thing I don't like about this game is the bloody cloth board. I mean please publishers.
No, if you do it publishers, no, don't do it.
No, if you do it, it needs to be that um material that for example, eternal decks material. Yeah. Or
Oh, yeah. Maybe. But that's like I don't like it. I don't like it. I just for me, I hate it. But aside from that, I love the game. So, what I really, really like about that game is how the different tiles interact. There is so much puzzling you can do just by when you place tile, you can maybe move someone else's tile or move your own tile. And the way that the placement is done is super clever because it's not just, oh, I place it adjacent to something else. You have specific places that you go and it's based on your color, right? It's like a checkerboard and you must always place on your color which means you're always going to be next to someone else's color. And you have several things to consider. The effect of the tile which will move tiles around leaving spaces and opening other spaces or maybe completing columns which is quite cool. So you can force the completion of columns and rows which the other player may may not have wanted.
But also you have special tiles which will be the sum of the tiles next to them. They're quite clever as well which I really really like.
And the sum of the one on top at the bottom. Yeah, there's some really cool stuff as well with the way that the tiles interact. Um, I think it's just a really fantastic game design. Yes, it is a heavily abstracted. This game is done in 20 minutes and I think it's very enjoyable and thinky when I could when I think of abstract tile laying games.
I think it's a really good one. Like I would play that over high of 10 times out of 10.
Over high?
Yeah. 10 times out of 10.
No.
No. To me to me not. But yeah, that's that's a different
different folks. Yeah. Exactly. different conites for different flips. Uh uh but yeah, there we go. There's no fair enough. Fair enough. Um there is a little bit of take that in the in the game. So the other player might do a power to
completely like ruin your can't really do anything about it. But same things you can do it to them.
Canian mean classician memes.
It's it's a very uh good game. I think it just came out a little bit too late for the market.
30 years too late.
30 years too late. It could have been a classic. That's why it just feel like a classic game
game. Yeah, it does feel like that.
But it's 2026. Um,
it's good. I didn't click too much, but I do understand why you really like it. So,
what's the next one, shall we?
Let's go.
Let's go. The next game on the list, uh, we got another two-player games that we were quite excited about it because it's he's got Bruno Katala written on the box. Big Bruno.
Um, dude,
so the the seven wonders dual dude. He's the splender dual. He's the dual guy.
He's the dual guy. Was the before the duel were cool, he was already doing before that. Um,
uh, so yeah. What What is Gatsby? Gatsby is a two-player specific game, dueling game of the type that Bruno Catala is known for. It is essentially an action selection game where you're going to be choosing a specific action, locking that action out for the other player, enabling the action across three different mini games. Yeah. You're going to be playing on the races, you're going to be in the bar or the casino, uh, and then you're going to be in the financial district up the tower.
Yeah. And you're going to be utilizing those different interacting mini games in order to collect the different famous characters from the Gats Great Gatsby. If you collect a set of five or three of the same, you win the game.
Yeah. So, you got as as he likes to do in every every games of his own, you got multiple ways of winning the games and uh you got different components. You got um on the map, you never know where the uh where the characters are. Some of the characters are revealed, some of them are not. So, you're basically battling between each other to get the favor of Gatsby in the three different mini games.
Yes.
Um, should we go on the
Let's go to the rankings.
Yeah. Three, two, one. Three, two, one. Go.
What is it?
It's a skip.
It's probably the games I was most uh disappointed. Um,
I just say
it just it just b I find it boring. Yeah,
funny.
I didn't like this game at all.
Uh, and I was excited because it's it's um I do I do like it's the the product is really beautiful. It's Gatsby. Some people likes it that like the ' 90s30s American stuff. Some some some likes it, some not. But I think Yeah, I think I think it's cool. I do like art. So, it looked very interesting. We were super interested um when he when he was started when he when he started to showing last year. The fact that you got these three different uh mini games. So you will have the in the bar or the cabaret whatever it is. Is this kind of like trying to draw a line with the with your pucks from one side to the other um to get uh this or that um charact character cards or everything is about getting character cards because that's how you win it. Um, so you got these things where you're battling with the other player on where who's putting the packs there first and you can do a lot of mean stuff. For example, you're going to swap some packs with with the other players or you can uh you you use one power to tell the other player which whichever.
Uh then you got the midsection that is the financial district. Uh that is simply when you take the action you go up a ladder. You go up the ladder. You go up up. That's very much it. Every now and then you might you will have a special things happening like swapping two characters token. So if you really want one and you know that you're going to win in that session, the mini games.
Um the third part is the is the racing that is not a race. The middle section feel more like a race game. Uh the last
majority piece. It's an error majority where you put in your parks to bet on the on the races, but actually you don't bet anything. You just like
if you've got the most, you win it.
Yes. And again, even with that, you got things to get some special action and blah blah blah. Um I'm finding the the things that I liked of the game was these things about blocking. You do it one of the um four action available and you blocking it for the other players. The other players cannot do the action. So, if I know that Wayne is going to win going to the races this turn, I will try to block it.
Yeah.
But you can't really do it either because the there are there are the the action taking that always mix. You can always do two of the same things or one of this and one of that. So, I can't really stop you from uh from doing that. But most of all, it was just bor It was boring. I'm I'm sorry to say it, but I find it boring. Funny that that the game
it was kind of like a draft of the game.
Yeah.
Without there was something missing there.
Something missing.
I I found the gameplay loop tremendously unsatisfying. Just the the whole process of playing the game was just really just uninspiring. So playing placing the little token somewhere doing something that felt completely impotent. Like it just like it almost felt like it doesn't really matter what I do. It doesn't feel impactful at all. The game takes ages to get going and then by the time you get to the end of the game, half of the actions are completely pointless. Anyway,
uh it just seems it just seems we haven't stated that on the on the racing track you got four four trucks where you can uh where you can bet. But once one race is over, that that's it. It's not an option anymore. So you got three, then you got two, then you got one, then you got none. That means that if both the players really go heavy on the racing stuff, halfway through the games, the entire action of going there is going to be pointed because it's going to be nothing to win. You've taken all of the the people.
Same things same things for the uh for the finances or the it just like
it seems I don't know it's it just felt a little halfbaked. I did not enjoy my time with and it's such a great disappointment because I was really excited about the vibe of it. uh the designer, uh the production, the fact it's two-player game. I was just like I really I really think that it's it was a game that was rushed out
to cover a a a spot. But if you see this,
we might be wrong. We play Yeah, we play with different people and they all have the same.
So if you see it differently and you really like Gatsby, let us know in the comments.
Oh yeah. Yeah, it'll be really interesting. We might got it wrong. We might go I don't know. We played with different people and they all got the same the same feeling and uh that's why it's the first keep that we ever did.
So Matt, the next one on the list is going to be a first impression. So we're going to do that. So this these ones are always a bit brutal because it's a first play of a game. It's always hard to give a a good a decent impression on the first play of a game. But I really want to talk the game. to talk about.
We got to talk. But that's the point of this show, right? Sometimes we'll just give you what we've played in the last month. If we played it once, twice, three times, doesn't matter. But we're going to tell you,
we tell you, we tell you played it once and this is our first impression of it. And it's Nippon Zabbatu.
Yeah, cuz the Nippon Zasu just arrived literally like 3 days ago while recording this video right here in this
brand new brand. It's smoking hot.
We did rush it to put it on the on the table because I was really really excited about it. Uh we did play it uh literally this morning. Yes. Um
fresh in the mind
and uh what it is is uh not a worker placement. It's a working
worker selection like action selection.
So basically what why you doing little story Japan story
Japan story time Japan at the end of the um restoration. Yeah. AG uh era end of uh in 9 19th century um they open up to the world because before that they were doing their things inside samurai isolationist policy. Yeah. Uh they started looking around and it was just like oh uh other people's got indust industrialized and we're still building our house with paper. Uh and they decide in a very Japanese fashion to do what the rest of the world did in 200 years to do it in 20. So basically there's been an explosion the boom explosion of the industrialization and that's what you're going to do in the in the game. You're trying to have your each player has got is at zatu. So it's kind of like this development thing and you're trying to build um uh factories and industries.
You're going to get your R&D going up to build better factory to produce more goods and then distribute that goods to the country to get influence into the country and then get points. That is very much the the things and how you do it is uh this very cool mechanics where you got workers on the board. Each action will have a certain amount of um uh of workers and you picking those worker and putting on your board to do that specific action. So you're removing workers from the boards putting on your board. Um so this is like the main the main gist of the game, the main mechanics.
Yes. Yes. Yes. So, all in a very Euro uh very very heavy Euro uh style. So, Matt, let's talk about initial rankings, then we'll talk about it. Three, two, one.
Solid.
Banger for me.
Spicy straight away.
It's a banger for me.
Um, let's start with first, let's get it out of the way. The production of this game is insane. It's beautiful. Looks incredible. Love the color palette. Love everything about the production. The photo that you're seeing right now is for the Emperor edition. That is the one with a a little deluxification. It's not crazy deluxification. It's a little bit a little bit more.
Of course, Matt got that one.
So,
well, to be honest, to be honest, there is um there's not much difference. The normal version is like 50 quid and the Emperor edition is it was like 70. I just say it was like
Yes. For that price. Yeah. Fair. So let's let's put that aside for a minute because it's worth worth speaking to but not in massive detail
and let's say that this is reimplementation of a game nippon that came out 10 years ago. So the game already existed that the the rules been streamlined a couple of things made it more modern but in in the core it's the same game.
It's the same game quite right in terms of the gameplay itself. This is very much your um what I consider a modern Euro. This is a even though it's 10 years old, it's been streamlined and it feels is a modern complicated wide euro with lots of interacting mechanisms. You have essentially nine actions that you choose from
and those actions you're going to and they all interlink in some way. You kind of need to do a bit of everything, right? with a very tight resource economy and a very aggressive um I suppose area majority piece as well on the board. There are some elements of the game that I think are absolutely fantastic, outstanding in fact and considering the game is a decade old, it's even more impressive even more today. It's like it's even more impressive that this game is a decade old that it feels like a modern white euro like of something like Galactic Cruise those modern style games or even almost lardite type games. um it is right at the very end of my like enjoyment level for complexity. So that's why for me it's solid right now. I need more for me personally how I how my brain works. I get extremely overwhelmed with lots of iconography.
Yes. Exact. I think I think the the difference between my bangers and your your solid is the fact that I'm the one that learned the rules and me.
I've been I've been spending a couple of days going through the rules and watching playroughs before
presenting it to you. I'm not the best at explaining rules. Explanation was great.
Um but I I do feel that taking it all together in one go and then playing two hours game it can be a little bit overwhelming.
Yeah. You give me a leaflet of icons. like fudge a lot
especially because yes there is um I think the iconography and the things is is one thing the other things is like when you build an industry each industry is different from each other they all producing six type of goods but each one will do like will have a special power so um you need to know which one to pick I felt on that like similar to galactic cruise when you start building your rocket which one do I need to pick that's why I was Let's I'm not even looking. Just let's let's see what happens. Um
you can see the potential of the game though, like for people that like get good at that game. I'm going to take this factory because it combines with this particular upgrade and if I do this action, it's going to get me this, this, this, and this. It's that kind of game. Yeah, for sure.
The other things I really like about the game is the is the financial side of the of the game. Uh, you got these very cool things. Well, you picking this worker from the from your board, from the main board. You put it on your player board. You can have up to six of them. Uh, the the um the meeples will be different colors. You say, "Why are the different colors?" This is because when you you have six um meeples on your on your board, you cannot pick anymore. You need to consolidate basically kind of like closing the the uh the the financial closing the financial year. Exactly. and you need to pay your workers and you're going to pay the the workers per color. So, if you manage to get all white workers or or blue workers, you just pay 3,000 yen. If you get a a blue and a white, you pay 6,000 of your next income and so on. So, if you got five different color, that that is um opens up of very things. I really need to do that action, but I cannot afford to get a um a meo color different of the ones that already got. So my turn going somewhere else.
There is um that mechanics and then the fact that at the end of each turn at at the end of this financial year, consolidation,
you losing all your volatile stuff, so all your cash and uh and all your your coal that you need to activate the factory with. that makes the the the the resources so limited that you really need to plan. You really need to plan.
You really do need to plan. It gives it a really great timing element as well. You need to make sure that your timing is right, that you've spent your money, that you've spent your volatile resources before you do this consolidation action. If you think about this as like a reverse worker placement because that's essentially what it is. This consolidation is the is the equivalent of workers come home, but in this case, it's workers come off the board. They come off the Exactly. to free up more space. I think it's a fantast.
But like I said, this is like right at the limit of the things I enjoy it best.
It's uh you said earlier, Galactic Cruise is uh is way shorter than Galactic Cruise. A little shorter because it's Galactic Cruise. First time we played it took us 5 hours, I think. This one is um is a it's a couple it's a good couple of hours. It's only a couple of hours of mentally
draining. Yeah, I was I was tired, but it's very rewarding. So, we might talk about this game more in the future or we'll see. Let us know if you want to see actual more content about Sne. There's a lot to say about it.
There really is. Yeah. Coming up next is an expansion that we would like to talk about and we'll give a rating for you and this is for one of the most successful games by uh check games edition in recent years and that is of course Fetti with the expansion space agencies. In this particular expansion, you're going to be getting, of course, new aliens that are going to be added to uh your game potentially. As well as that, asymmetric player powers or asymmetric uh space agencies with different individual skills. And as well as that, a kind of shortened kickstarted game where you're going to start without having to worry about all of the grind of the beginning couple of turns. You kind of start partway through the game, giving you bunch of resources to then get cracking with.
Yeah,
there's there's that in brief.
Nice and nice and easy. And it said it was one of our favorite game.
It it was in 2024. Excellent game. So excellent game.
Let's go over. Yeah. Is it deserve it?
Three, two, one.
Solid.
Banger.
Okay. What up, Matt? All right. Give us your banger.
Um, the fact that he's cutting out the grind at the start. So, the fact that you you can cut out basically what was the one of the main flows of of Seti, the grind at the start of the game. and I don't know where I want to be basically when I when I grow up. Um the new the new space agency basically already points you towards a direction. You're going to be good at
going fast in the space. You're going to be good at researching, going to be good at the superco computer. Um and and adds already at the start of the game this or that resources or this or that. It it just feels like helps a lot of people. um especially if you are a little bit AP prone or something like that. it kind of like already it doesn't it doesn't put you on a truck or see of course you can always go what you like you can go where you like but it just gonna give you like a little push towards a direction
and uh and cuts out that first round where people are just like
uh I'm just doing this I'm just getting resources I can't build anything I don't have any money next round it cut out that that it was the cut underwhelming I think with these
should have been in the original game
honestly
and they would have make it a 10 instead of a nine. That's what that is.
No, honestly, I think you're right. I think the agency specifically and the way that the game starts that I think should just be how you play STI. My my critique and why it's not a banger for me is that some of the agencies feel like they weren't developed enough in the terms of like they just bloody nightmare to try and work out exactly what they do. Yes. I was just like,
"What is this? What does that mean? What you
especially especially if you take if you're taking set's been sitting on your shelf for a few months and you want to try this, make sure to re have a refresh of all the rules that the iconography have because we would have just like what is going on? What is this?" So, um, yeah, it was just a just a few of them I feel like could have had some extra development or maybe been taken out or changed to something simpler or for for my tastes. A few of them I think were were a little bit of a nightmare to pass, but beyond that, the actual concept of SETI uh uh uh space AC is excellent, but yeah, it should have been in the base game.
And then of course, you got those like extra aliens. It just adds a little bit of um more variety. Uh to be honest, between us, the aliens of that game is just things that I'm less excited about every time.
Least interesting thing about the game because it's just more spaces to go.
Yeah. Um I I just I and I really love the game. I think like it would have been fine even without the aliens honestly just exploring space.
But I just really excited. But no, if you if you have already set, I kind of like feel this is like a must have expansion cuz it just like
it really is. Yeah, I think it's really good. will it will help you playing the game with other people and will play the game more. It's I'll definitely get it.
Yeah, it's excellent. So, Space Agent 6.
The next game we're talking about is a game from a little while ago. I think at least a decade, man.
Two decades.
We played
Oh my gosh.
We played the 20 years edition of Nerosima X.
Wow.
It just came out this year. literally like a few months ago. No, no, last month it came out the 20th anniversary edition of Neiroshima X. Neiroshima X is one of those games that I always looked from from the side because there are so many expansion. It's been out there for 20 years. There are a million expansion. Basically what the game is is this um one versus one or two versus two or
but it's a is a one versus one where you're going to um play um soldiers on on the battlefield on this kind of like rounded battlefield format of axes. That's why Niroshima hex. And uh each each uh turn you're going to pick up from the piles of your axes. You're going to pick up three of them. You're going to discard one and you're gonna play two or keep one and play and play the other one. And you go back and forward. Um you could start putting all the all your soldiers. So on this axis they're going to be soldiers that can shoot, they can fight, they can punch or or stuff like that or throw nets. There's all sorts of stuff.
So you go back and forward between the between the two players until one of the two players draw and plays a fighting card. Then it's basically like fight and everything shoots simultaneously and everything kills each other basically. You got um uh a timing to the games where um certain unit will go faster than others and and blah blah blah. But the game has been out for 20 years and I always be like, "Oh, I don't really want to get in something that has got a million expansion." The 20 years edition is the new platform where to start. They um uh reprinted the original four faction in the in the box with a better production, a better everythinging. Um and that's it. So, let's see what we think about the game. Okay.
Does this 20 years old game still holds it?
Does it stand up to scrutiny? Three, two, one.
What is it? Solid.
It's a banger. It was a banger.
I think it was great.
Oh, I thought it was awesome. I thought you'd go right straight for the banger,
but I think it's really cool. So, let me tell you for why. Um, I've never played Niroshima Hex like you. It's one of those games that's always been in the periphery. And the fact that this game is 20 years old, it feels still unique,
super cool. Yes, it's it's it's own thing. When we played it, we're just like, this is this
this is Yeah.
cool. Like it would be great if there was like a, you know, better way to play multiplayer, but it is a as a two-player game. It is awesome. And I feel like if that game never existed and it came out today, I think it would still blow a lot minds. It would have had first had meanings, but it would Yeah, it would have been by Yeah, it would have been on Kickstarter,
but it would have I think it would blow a few people's minds still. I like I really like it. But I think it has what I like a lot about that game is it tickles my brain in the same way that the kinetic game tile layers.
It is a tile at the end of the day.
It is a tile play.
I draw tiles. I pick the one I want. I place it on the grid. It's going to have an effect. I love those games a lot.
Yeah, it's really cool.
Um I really like the fact that um in the in the core box, you got these four faction. They're not just different in colors. Each faction will have a different type of play style. Some of them can shoot from long range. Some of them are better um melee combat. Uh some of them will will have um skewing station or stuff like that. Some of them will have robot with shields. So, it's really cool. And then the million expansion that came out in the last 20 years. Each expansion will add more uh more factions. Um
I think it's is is brilliant. If I do feel it that is to end I do I do feel a couple of um of thing because it's a skirmish game. Um it's very simple to explain and to play. Um, it just I don't know. It it feels the 20 years old when the the modern skirmish always got a little bit on more spicy or
there was something else going on.
Yeah. But but I see how this influenced
loads a lot of other games. So it's it's absolutely
you can absolutely sense the impact that the game has had on other game design. Um, but I it's really really interesting. It has a both a strategic and a tactical nature, right? Because obviously you're looking at the playerboard, you're looking at the current state of play. You got a couple of tiles. Okay, well I can keep this one for later. But this is more on the tactical edge because you're going to be reacting to the to whatever you're drawn and reacting to what the players ask. But there is still so many options in there.
And it's super cool the fact that if no one of the players play the fighting game, you keep putting tiles
tiles until it fills up. But then when it fills up, everything goes haywire. It's really cool. And I love the interesting and overlapping effects from the different factions as well. You're throwing nets to like stop others working, which is really cool. Little grenades and bombs that blow a load of stuff up. I think it's super fun.
One things that is in the in this new edition box that we haven't played it yet, but I'm sure we we will is the scenario. So, you'll have a book full of scenarios that's going to that's going to No, it's just single single scenarios. Uh these each scenarios will tell you which faction of the core box you need to use cuz they are kind of like tuned in for this or that faction. Uh and they will have like different uh special rules.
