Weekly Work Jam: How to Play Drop Drive

can you see me can you hear me if you hear i don't think anyone's here but i'll say hello to nobody anyway let me just check my stats here and see what's working what's not here but i'll say hello to nobody my own streams working on my own phone fantastic facebook looks like not working man you know what there's so many doodads going on with streaming and these are kind of meant to be these are work streams right these are not i'm just going to clarify right at the top this is not meant to be an entertaining experience whatsoever all this is is i got some work to do it's tuesday afternoon at 1 pm eastern standard time if you are fortunate like me to be able to work from a computer maybe from home and you just want to keep an ear open to a podcast or stream well here's one of the ones you can keep an ear open too so what i'm doing today is i'm scripting uh actually i should say it's a different step so i've already scripted i've got this uh this game coming up uh it's coming up on kickstarter and the the publisher of the game has hired me to make a video for it is going to appear on rado's uh channel uh rata's another rod is another uh board game youtuber and if you're into board games and you know you watch stuff about board games on youtube you know all about who rado is so i'm making this video it's going to be how to play video and this is this is the script for it i just want i'm a little bit spooked i just want to make sure that everything everything's working is chat working is chat working looks like chat's working very well then we carry on so part of this is that i was working on a video uh called my process where i was just gonna you know step you through every every phase of the of the process that i did to get a how to play video birthed and into the wild and i was turning out to be like a really daunting process there's so many steps and there's so many just stuff i would have to film it was a big pain in the butt so instead what i decided to do was do these work streams and eventually i'll get enough footage that i'll be able to cobble together into that my process video so it's neat because i'm capturing different oh hey dom get back in the barn chat but i have no idea what any of that means dom i have to admit uh but as i was saying the uh it's neat because on these work streams i'm i happen to be capturing like every every different step of the process so here's what this step of the process is we're bouncing around a little bit but i have received the game that's important i opened the game i read the rule books i goofed around with the components now oddly i haven't been able to play this game yet and it's not for lack of trying i've been trying for a couple weeks now to get people to sit down and play it but again it's tough during uh during covet when it's a little bit harder to see people things are opening up a little bit so i have a narrow window i'm expecting them to clamp down a bit in a couple weeks hey michael hola i just realized the time was in that weird est that you used not proper pst i know i'm liking a time warp anyways explaining so uh i haven't played the game yet uh but it's such a simple game that i think i have a pretty decent idea of how it goes so i sat down and i wrote this script and then you can see some colors and some other doodads and whiz wong's on it so what i do after i write the script and i'm pretty happy with it by the way it's split up whenever you see like anything's bolded that's where i'm going to have a title screen come in and announce that if you've seen my videos you kind of know how that goes agricola get back in the bar chat but mom you're quoting the agricola video wow man i just that's the other thing too man i have like a memory like a sieve and people tell me it's it's lovely because people tell me anecdotes about myself and they're like do you remember the time of no i don't tell me all about it and like wow that that ryan sounds like a fascinating individual because it's almost like i have lifelong alzheimer's or something uh hey dj muffy glad you could join me what are you working on dj monkey are you what's everybody working on are you guys editing or doing spreadsheets or just kicking what's happening i was explaining so anytime you see this uh this bolded section that's where i'm going to split it up into title cards so i've written the whole script and now the next step is to go through and determine what's actually going to be on camera based on what's in the script so i use this little i don't know if this is an emoji or a unicorn unicode character it's not a unicorn a unicode character that looks like a little light bulb and i just plunk it down so i'll just read through the script and you can see that i've done some of it on the right here and so i come up with codes and the codes refer to the different areas of the board i'm going to photograph i was hoping that i would actually be able to get to photography today and i still i still might if i get this this step done this step in the next step then we'll be able to do some photography kicking back after a long day at the office right dj mikvy you're in like 6 p well now 6 6 20 bst bs2 which i think ends in october right let me know yeah the office is the spare bedroom ain't that the way yeah kick back chill homunculi is having lunch sounds good what are you eating for lunch i have my trusty dr pepper [Music] scrumptious kickapoo joy juice i get a little bit get a little bit feisty at uh at one o'clock that's when i've had my uh have my caffeine dump says i'm moving to a different state in a couple days should probably start that you probably should but really you should watch this stream first and then start packing you know get this is this is important too not really i feel like organizing my last game nights takes priority yeah we just had a friend i have a friend named uh michael todd who you've seen uh join us on a few streams and he moved from ontario out to nova scotia recently and that was very very sad for us i mean it's great to see him i mean in a better place sounds like he died he didn't die uh but he went out there to start a family and we had to say goodbye to michael todd over a series of a few weekends of playing games and getting our fun in and having our last sort of enjoyment together so i get it it's uh it's tough it's tough end of october is when bst ends okay good good i'm not i don't know when to change that those initial that initialism that's when the ludicrous bs that does sound a little bit late doesn't it october when does when is daylight saving time in north america and let's google that uh dst north america goes from i don't know and first sunday in november oh my gosh we go all the way to november no way so here i mean i think dst is maybe even more ludicrous than bst then having stuffed bell pepper tacos stuffed bell pepper tacos i get what stuffed bell peppers are let's just i'm gonna get so distracted on the stream some stuffed bell peppers okay but then what does it look like when they're in do you are they the tacos is like the pepper the shell or do you put those in a sort of fried tortilla or you're just calling this a taco when we the rest of humanity calls this is stuffed bell pepper oh no bell pepper tacos no it's a stuffed bell pepper it's just stuffed bell pepper looks good though yeah we're after uh you take the cut of bell peppers put in the stuffing and oh yeah and then you do put them in tacos i see no photo evidence of what you're eating have you made this up because usually you can find a picture uh still that's great that's almost like that's weird like that's like putting something in a bag and then in a box you know i mean it's already got a perfectly good i guess it's kind of i guess you can't really hold it by the pepper what are we doing we're working right boy bouncing around yeah now i'm hungry too okay let me tell you a quick food story before i continue with this nonsense the publisher said he might pop into the stream so i'm a little bit conscious of the fact that like he's gonna be like what what are you doing this is what you do is this what we're paying you do you just goof off and about bell peppers all afternoon and garlic so i don't like fajitas very much your mileage may vary but they're not my favorite but the other night i just had this weird craving for fajitas it's an easy meal to make sure why not so i looked up a recipe and i thought you know what i would love with fajitas i think is if you've ever had shawarma you know that there's a lebanese garlic sauce that's really potent and tastes delicious salty and garlic ain't good you put it on your pita great i thought that might be good with fajitas i can't make shawarma i don't know how to do that big meat log thing but maybe i can make lebanese garlic sauce and put it on on the fajitas so i i did here's how you make lebanese garlic sauce i took maybe six bulbs of garlic and i peeled all the cloves and i stuck it was a cup of garlic if you can picture that cup of raw garlic stuck in the food processor with some salt and then two cups of sesame oil and some lemon juice and that all emulsifies and turns into this creamy paste sort of stuff and then you put it on stuff and i thought man this is going to be amazing and i like the garlic so i was slathering it on on my fajitas i took a bite and it was it was so spicy and if you got the stream with sean when he was making me eat spicy things i'd like spice but i i don't like stunt spice and this was approaching it was just garlic but it was approaching stunt spice levels and i spent the rest of the night trying to get the garlic taste out of my mouth and today i'm i'm amazed that you're not seeing like waves going towards the camera and everything's going all woozy because i reek of it it's coming through my pores it's up my mouth up my eyeballs it's garlic everywhere i'm like a superhero just like exuding garlic so if that i'd like throw me in with a big pile of vampires i will take care of them i will get those vampires do you need to post photos on the discord thanks for mentioning the discord i swear i don't put them up to it but uh the folks who are hanging out with the discord i wonder if i can trigger that from here oh i know hang on let me get my thing i don't know if it'll reach this is my little little companion iphone and i have this great app here called touch portal and it lets me rig up cue animations and do things oh but i have to open it and it works in conjunction with if you want to check it out i mentioned again this is like a behind the scenes thing you have to open it up on your on your computer and have it on on a phone on a separate or like an ipad or something a secondary device at the same time so it's yelling at me because i don't have it open on the computer garlic is very good for the blood if i recall correctly i knew a guy when i was in high school it was a neighbor of my then girlfriend and he would just like eat he would just eat raw garlic just clothes clothes clothes all the time he just reached garlic and she hated him for it she's a very hateful person my ex-girlfriend but uh yeah he he took that that missive to heart and he just thought oh i know i'm gonna live forever ah garlic garlic this is touch portal i think i've showed it to you before on on other work streams so it it shows me that little that same page on my little phone and i've got it queued up here i'll show you what the what the page for my graphics in here so this these are all the ones that i can trigger so far from from the app let me just pop over there so if i want to talk about the discord server yeah it works fantastic so when i talk about doodads and bells and whistles and things anyway that's the discord server if you want to join us there we have a photography channel which is what uh humankindsu was was mentioning if you like taking pictures or if you like seeing really cool pictures people share some amazing stuff we have some professional and amateur photographers among us who who show some absolutely incredible shots so so that's that michael says i'm working uh stuck in a boring webinar oh god no i turned around to see stuffed bell peppers i know it's unfair wish i could unmute the stream to find out what is going on well you're not going to find it out for mr flappy gums in silence over here you have to watch the rerun i guess right back to this so i'll just copy this little light symbol and go and i'll find the next place that needs a shot and it's all in my head at this point uh so this part of the script once you've finished selling you cover up the leftmost spot of any asteroid color so this is going to be kind of hard i mean again it's not meant to be an entertaining stream but it is going to be kind of hard for you to follow if i don't show you a few of the components like i say this game is coming up on kickstarter at the beginning of october end of september october it's the first tuesday on october fifth early october anyway so i have to have it done soon so hustle a great way to get work done is to stream your work just yep yep yeah let me get some components and i'll be able to hold them up while i work on the script and show you so drop drive is from the makers of another game called dungeon drop which you may or may not have heard of let me know in the chat if you've heard of dungeon drop that's a fantasy version of the concept and this is a sci-fi implementation of a similar concept and in dungeon drop you got a bunch of stuff you got cubes and plastic doodads and crystals and things and you i don't know if they're crystals but you just shake them all up on your hand and like throw them at the table and excuse me they all end up all over the place and then some of the cubes were little gray cubes and so you would so that whole mess of cubes and junk and trash all over your table i'm sure the client doesn't want to be calling you trash but you know just stuff just game components that is the dungeon so you would pick three gray cubes and you'd say okay these three cubes delineate the walls of the room of the dungeon that i'm going to go adventuring in and maybe inside that triangulated you know those three those three cubes inside that area there would be like a green cube which would be a goblin that you can fight or there's a gold cube which is treasure that you can pick up that kind of thing right so it's you're just going and saying like i'm grabbing this and then doing this doing stuff within that boundary and then i'm doing this and doing stuff within that boundary so this game is a little bit different same same deal you've got a bunch of components and there's going to be a dome-shaped sun that you put in the middle and a hexagon of walls that you put around the play area i don't quite have the walls out yet but i will get to when we do photography you take all the stuff shake it up and you drop it on the sun and it goes bouncing all over the place everywhere and it creates this galaxy of items and components all over the table and then you have a nav tool so it's just a plastic segments that you know how you can snap things together and they bend kind of like a snake so it's that and you use that to stretch it out and drop your ship into the play area and then you also use that to bend it and shape it to define the flight path of your ship through that play area so you say oh i want to pick up that gem and that gem and get that piece of salvage and land on that planet so you go twist twist twist twist twist and you put the i know like without seeing the components i was like what is he talking about so you define the na the uh the navigation path of your of your ship you grab stuff you land on planets you sell the stuff and then there are cards you can pick up and different abilities you can get and you can expand your ship and do a few other things so when you land on planets these are this is prototype too but that is what a planet looks like and i i've only recently started playing sorry you guys are talking i should i should play that today a little bit more i've only recently been starting to play zia and to me the game has a lot in common with zia if you took zia you know the three hour experience and boiled it down to 30 minutes if you if you really really truncated it and took a few of zia's essences then it would be something closer to drop drive sort of um just the way that you sell things is similar so you're running around grabbing asteroids in the play field so this is this is where you're selling the asteroids and you're identifying salvage and in zia you have to identify artifacts and there are pirates a little little bad guy pirates that when you uh sell stuff to a planet that pirates go and start scooping up gems that may or asteroids that maybe you wanted to collect but if you fight those pirates and you win by via simple die roll then they get bounced back to the plant you get to collect all the stuff that they've stolen yeah and then the the more interesting stuff happens when you start picking up these cards so it's at the game where you drop the cubes and they form rooms yes you'll monetize you that's the one hello omelette glad you could join us ahmed might be moderating for us today i'm not too sure almond has the moderator powers that's what i will say so you the way you put your ship together this is kind of interesting too is there's a front of the ship and a back of the ship and then you can put like little extensions you get these explore cards and they make little extensions between the front and the back of your ship and by extending your ship you can either add more cargo spaces like this is a cargo space or you can add abilities to your ship you can also collect little specimens kind of reminds me of uh i guess that's not very close to the camera kind of reminds me of a flight of the navigator where you can collect little critters and put them on your ship and the critters kind of give you points they kind of combo off each other so this one will give you points for every critter of a sir under a certain weight that you have on your ship so then you want to go collect or find critters of a certain weight and then the third thing that you can get are let me see if i can find one that where the graphics are a little bit more final actually you know what it's kind of a behind the scenes thing so i can show you something in progress as well just so you know this is prototype and still uh still chipping away at it so here's one where it still has the line art that's unpainted so that's a a passenger and here's one where it's more polished right so they went with an art collective uh to to illustrate the game and i really like some of the character art that they've put in it so you're gonna take those uh take those people and deliver them to the right planets and then pick up a reward for so you know you can be a taxi service too how are you doing today everyone luke asks how how polite how friendly such friendly folks involved with knights around the table it's wonderful here's another here's another little critter that you can pick up and store on your ship that's so small i don't know if you can see any of that that's crazy tiny hold on let me see if i can if i go to hmm let me see let me think let me think let me think i might be able to switch to a better view i think very slowly oh yeah here we go maybe this one ah yeah look at that now i can show you so that's what one of the little specimens looks like and then i showed you the unfinished art for one of the passengers you can pick up that focus and then here is more polished artwork for come on focus focus well there we go all right so these are the uh these are the two planets that you could possibly deliver that that person to and then here's the mid section of one of the ships that gives you a special ability yeah slow to focus but multi-pass i work today at three to ten o'clock like in the evening what do you do that you work till 10 o'clock in the evening that sounds challenging and where is it your time luke let's go back to let's go back to this silly thing when there's nothing really to show on the screen that's when i highlighted orange and that's going to be a ryan shot so it'll just be me talking head to the camera look at your ships explore ratings so i need a shot of when i enter the codes so when i when i first started making these videos i would a lot of games think about it board games you have like a player board and you've got the main board and you're bouncing back and forth and especially if you're teaching somebody how to play you say put this cube on your player board and then go to the main board and stick a person there and then collect something from the main board and put it on your player board there's a lot of back and forth between those two areas and when i was new to this i would set up the player board i'd get my shot of taking the cube off and then i would scoop that to the side and then i would bring in the main board and i'd reframe the shot and i would get a picture of it going on the main board and then i would scooch that aside and go back to the player board and it was just really i i learned eventually that framing the camera and getting everything lined up really nicely took a lot of time so then i started thinking man i got to do things a little bit differently a little bit more efficiently so now what i do is i when i'm going through the script if i know something's going to be happening in the player board area i'll do this i'll put pb next to it and i'll say i know some ship because it really doesn't matter so you can highlight the uh explore rating all ships have an explore rating and a drop drive rating oh sorry a drop drive rating at an engine rating and an explorer amount of tells you the amount of cards that you get to draw from the deck [Music] of let's say two i can find a ship with two uh so then uh you know and when i get to a spot about the board i put a b for board colon and i type up the shot what's happening in the shot and then the process so i go through the entire script and i i delineate all the shots and everything that's going to be depicted visually and then i have to go back which i don't know if we'll see on the stream but i go back with my little white board and i i need to number all the shots but i want all the b's to be numbered sequentially and all the pbs the player board shots to be numbered sequentially so what i do is i sit down and i write you have to do pb and b and then when i get to a pb i put a tally mark there and i label it pbo1 and then when i get to the b pbo2 0102.03 and then the next shot might be a player board shot so the two so i know to label it two so i do this whole tally system and then i get all my shots labeled sequentially there might be a better way to do that and if you know please let me know i'd like to be able to automate that but i've looked into scripting with google drive google drive by the way is is what i'm using here and what i use when i um when i write my scripts and uh oh what do i want there so i've i've looked into like i'd love to be able to just write something less script that can just automate it and just go and automatically add all of the numbers but uh google google drive scripting doesn't let you do much with the comments it doesn't allow you to hook into them or do much searching in them or anything you can't even like there's another problem with google drive if you if i wanted to if i knew that there was a comment that mentioned a certain type of thing going on in the shot and i wanted to search for it like find doesn't even work with comments you can only find in the main body of the thing that you've written and you can't search any of the comments or anything so it's pretty it's pretty limited black angel in the background you can see that yeah so that was what my the last three days of my life looked like uh dj muffy i was just doing black angel photography for ever let me show you what that looks like all right uh actually let me let me switch to the bigger maybe i can do this yeah nope that's black angel okay what about this yes so here's my my trusty iphone and the black angel shots went on for like i was i was at it for days just days there's 55 different um shots of the of the main board and when i say 55 shots like a single shot could be stop motion animated so it contains the multiple pictures right oh just just it was it was incessant it was incessant but now i got it all done i've got all the black angel photography done and i would have started editing it with you guys today on the on the work jam but uh i'm looking at the calendar and when this drop drive video is is due and i'm thinking shoot i gotta get cracking on that really really ah great back to it 1 36 p.m for you so you got to go work soon hey luke would you say you worked at night yes kawaii i don't know what kawaii is so yeah black angel how to play video is is coming up eventually i can't promise it for this week i think i mentioned on another stream it's like my it's like my lost in la mancha it's my development hell project where it's just been going on for months and months and i can't seem to just i can't seem to get it there and i've i've been interrupted you know i've been on vacation uh took a a week and a half or so split up so it's you know it's tough to get back into the swing of things this is me trying to get back in the swing of things last week i went on a quick little mini like two day three day vacation with my wife for our anniversary which is quite nice and before that it was a little cottage with some friends playing board games that was also very very nice mm-hmm what we doing brian's fill up the pink look at your ships raining and draw that many cards on the deck e.d i'm going to call explore deck because that'll be a separate area of the table that i'm trying to shoot and this kind of thing i got to show the pirate coming off the card but i already have a shot where i'm doing stuff on the planet so i'll just add that instruction up to that shot whether or not you did that you activate all pirates who are in space and this is going to be a challenging one to film because as you know i like doing how to play videos where there's no hands in the shot but drop drive is impossible to do that way without it's going to be really challenging if i were to try to do it with no hands you would have no idea how to play the game because it's very one where you very much have to use your hands and get in there it's very spacial so i'm going to have to break tradition and do a lot of shots that have my big hairy meaty man hands in him not my preference but the game demands it let's do this and we'll say board move a couple of pirates in space around to grab their closest matching asteroids weird i'm watching the stream on my playstation and on my phone phone for chat it's fine on my phone but it keeps stalling on the playstation that is weird i have not found dj makvy the um the browser on the playstation to be all that good is that fair if there are no matching asteroids for a certain pirate to steal you just re-drop that pirate over this so i think i need two shots here if there's no matching asteroids for the pirate to steal i'll say board some other pirate different than last shot no matching that's right put q marks over the pirate q marks that's just a note like in post i'll put like little like you know question marks over the little pirates head he's just a spaceship you know what i'm saying hopefully actually and then here's another thing too that a trap that i set for myself so watch this i'll just i'll just i'll make the mistake and then i'll show you why it's a mistake the browser is poor yes but oh it's an app for twitch and it's goofing up for you on twitch eh that's funny because i don't have the um i don't have twitch open while i'm doing streams because i'm worried about like uploading it and simultaneously trying to download it and i don't want that to bog down my connection so i don't get to see when things mess up the reason by the way thank you for the patience the reason why this stream was so delayed was because i had a meeting this morning that got bumped by an hour and by meeting i mean massage that's the only kind of meeting i have so i still have a massage face and maybe even the line from the bed on my my forehead that's what's happening i have my face stuck in the thing all morning what a life oh what a tough life i lead massage dr pepper mmm la vida loka i have a bit of an issue with my back so i go for fairly regular massages great so the mistake that i was about to make was i was going to say b oh no i can i can do it here i was going to say i'll say like you know this area of the board you know grab a house and then this area the board put a house down and because i i shoot all the board shots together and all of the player board shots together it's a continuity error potentially because i'll pick up a pink house here and i'll put down a greenhouse over there for example so i have to make sure that when i make these notes to myself in the in the shot list that if i say pop off a pirate i have to say like pop off the pink pirate so the next shot i can say drop the pink pirate but here it's okay because these are both board shots so i can just say drop the pirate from last shot into onto the sun now because it's a uh a prototype that that the sun that you're dropping everything onto it isn't isn't a ready component yet so they just sent me like a piece of painted styrofoam so i hope people get the uh get the cue from the top of the video this is prototype this is you're not going to get a piece of styrofoam probably because i imagine that those like those styrofoam balls aren't cheap it's probably easier and cheaper to make a plastic one hmm the browser's poor i'll switch over to my apple tv the resolution is better on apple tv too interesting yeah that is interesting it's almost like i was gonna say something dumb i was gonna say i don't know do they have to pay for server bandwidth twitch on uh on playstation what's going on with that why would it be much better on one platform than another i don't know that concludes all of your planetary activities remember the planet stuff i'm trying to avoid this word in my scripts remember because i was watching another person who does youtube videos and he kept saying like every five minutes remember that blah blah blah blah and it was a really complicated game it's like remember that da da da da and i thought like how the hell am i supposed to remember that there's too much going on i can't remember anything so i thought like remember like tell me remember like as if anyone it just presumes that whoever's watching the video is retaining anything that you've said which i don't think is a safe presumption at all so i'm trying to keep this word to a minimum what do i say instead of remember sometimes i'll say recall it's just a synonym that concludes all of your planetary activities remember that planet stuff ends your turn i'll just say planet stuff ends your turn entirely uh doing planned stuff yeah i don't remember i don't like remember and this is going to be another uh ryan shot this music is weird everybody why can't i see my stuff view hello please view i forget how to get the controls back at the top of the screen exit full screen there we go that's what i wanted it's like an aggressively boring stream maybe jeff's having a dispute with sony you know what i used to be a video game developer and my main tool for making games was a piece of software from adobe called flash and people who aren't in the know will give you reasons for why uh flash died oh it wasn't very secure and all this you know the everyone they people used it to make ads ad banners and you know all kinds of dumb excuses that were fed to them and that they believed the real one of the biggest reasons why flash died was because it's apples on top they're one of the richest companies in the world they didn't want people being able to circumvent their app store where games were sold and they made a very sizable cut on them 30 percent and they were just making money hand over fist on the app store so flash was a threat to them and not only that but they had to pay adobe a license fee in order to make the flash player available on their platform so they could play all this content why would they they don't want people playing you know cheap easy free awesome interactive content in the browser so screw that flashes out and they killed it so yeah i wouldn't be surprised if disputes like that with other technologies are going on all the time yeah apple and adobe fell out yes thank you i'm glad that you know that dj my fee because a lot of people think it's like oh well who nobody liked hamster in a blender and that's why flash died it's like really that you think really you think it was because people didn't enjoy the content that was you that that the tool you know people use the tool to create that's ridiculous that's ridiculous that would be like saying and people didn't understand too a lot of people still to this day don't understand that flash was a piece of software so it would be like saying like oh photoshop died because people didn't like the pictures people were making with it it's like what are you talk people didn't like you know what people didn't like that they were modifying women's bodies using photoshop and putting those pictures on magazine covers and that's why photoshop died like that doesn't make any sense had nothing to do with the content created with the tool and everything to do with huge titans of industry fighting with each other like two like big kaiju like godzilla versus mechagodzilla above our heads as we're all just kind of trying to dodge the flying cars and collapsing buildings and shrapnel from their battle and as a result two million developers lost their livelihood back to this me included thank you for asking i get a bit salty about the whole flash deal happy wheels was becoming too powerful what the hell's happening was that a flash game that's the other thing a flash game oh it's a flash game nobody says oh that's a c plus plus game nobody says oh yeah i played a lot of c sharp games back in the day you know what i mean like nobody they might they might say that with unity but i don't see it i don't see it doing the same thing i play a whole lot of unity games like what do you like games developed in unity like they didn't understand what the word flash meant you know i don't know i even saw i i watched this game show called uh um actually by the the college humor people and they even had a question on the show where they described something probably homestar runner as flash animated and the way they spelled it was a small f with a hyphen flash animated and i wrote it because they encourage people to correct them because that's all part of the the game is the whole game is about correcting people so they say you know if we made a mistake correct us so i wrote it and i said there's no like flash animated isn't a thing it's flash is like a like a proper noun like it's a capital f like it's like photoshop like it's a it's a it's a brand like you wouldn't put small c coke its bounty so here i need to be adjust nav tool to fly blue ship into a pirates you roll one die and the player to your right rules a die for the pirate um okay see you roll buddy and i'm gonna have to name the color of the pirate here let's say it's the yellow pirate this is the problem that i was talking about before where i have to define colors of things or there will be a continuity or roll blue dye and yellow dye whatever number you roll you have to adjust it by your ship's battle rating so the good ship chameric queen has a battle rating of plus one allowing you to add plus one to your role uh if your number beats whatever the pirate rolled um yeah do this do this a bunch of times or different results and then i'll just you know edit and use the best or use the one that i need to depict what i'm trying to say yeah the tech giants are really suing and countersuing each other all the time isn't sure man have you ever watched um silicon valley one of the greatest television shows i've ever seen in my life and it is so accurate it's so painfully accurate i worked in software for 20 almost 20 years i guess i'm still working in software i've got side jobs that are software related i'm designing games for oculus and stuff right now but yeah it's uh it's super it's painfully painfully accurate and you could tell mike judge used to live in that live and work in that world because it's uh it's keen satire let's just say there's a great scene in silicon valley second or third season where like two super rich tech dudes are uh they're on the tarmac and they've each taken a private jet to get somewhere and they're like oh you know where are you headed oh i'm headed here oh where are you headed i'm headed this way and you know my house is on the way right so like you're thinking like yeah come on guys get to it.

and then they both go well they're just here they both take off their private jets in two different directions obviously it didn't even dawn on them for one of them to give the other one a ride which he later does in a different episode and it goes very poorly but like oh man [Music] the good ship chimeric queen has a battle rating of plus one okay so this will be player board chimeric queen if your number beats whatever the pirate rolled you defeat the pirate and return the pirate to its planet uh so up here i'd have to pop off the pirate save and return the pirate to its planet and take all of its accumulated bounty as much as your ship can hold okay so here it would be what code did i use for the plant's pc or for planet cards yellow planet i hope there's a yellow planet yes there is it's called it's called alpha oh maybe i shouldn't you know what i've done too many shots with the alpha planet let's fight the pink pirate on this one i think before when i was showing you these planet cards i didn't quite get it close enough in your face so this is what a prototype planet card looks like and this i compared it earlier to compared it earlier to zia so this thing right here is no longer in the game they've scrapped that bit but it was very much like zia where in zia you're flying your ship around and you have a an impulse drive which is like your your limp to places drive if everything else is broken your engines are on fire or whatever you can always flip that token and just squeak along and so they had that in this game but they scrapped it in favor of and it's better i think that they scrapped it because i don't know you just have they had a system for you to spend a token and move your ship and then this was a second system to spend your token to move your ship so i think pretty wisely they're like why do we need both we'll scrap this and it'll just be fuel so you can pick up fuel in outer space move your ship around and you don't need the token back to it i heart jared he was really good in that he was the best thing about that absolutely horrid ghostbusters remake too he had the the museum scene right off the top of the movie he's hilarious yellow plant is no we're not going to do the yellow planet we are going to do and we're not going to do the yellow part we're going to do the pink pirate pop off pirate roll a blue dye and a pink dye i didn't realize alpha was yellow i thought it was blue yellow planet here we go pop on pirate take uh off uh take off how much four asteroids i want to show this is the other thing is that on the planets they've depicted um let me see if i can show you here oh that's not the right one that's not it there it is they've depicted three asteroids here that the that the pirate steals and i ask them is that like is that a cap on bounty like the uh the pirate can't take any more any more asteroids they said no we were gonna do that but no the pirates can take as much as they want so i definitely want to depict at least in this shot more than three asteroids so i'll say there's four asteroids but then i also want to illustrate that you can't take them all if you can't fit them so or i wonder that's actually a question that i have to ask the client because i'm thinking now you got four asteroids on the planet and you have room for one asteroid and a bunch of other junk no would you do that i don't even know like i'm just thinking like you can jettison your cargo so it sounds pretty dumb but would you like jettison all your cargo to take all of the asteroids off so you jettison three cargo so you take three more asteroids so now you're full up with four asteroids there's still an asteroid on the planet and you jettison one of your pink asteroids just to take it off the planet just to make sure that that planet has no more pink on it for somebody else to fight a pirate and steal do you know what i'm saying so when i come up with questions like this that i have to ask the client later i will go down to the very bottom of the script and i will say can you take just put this under questions questions can you take all the asteroids oh i should say after winning a fight against a pirate good the music service that i've been auditioning is called uh epidemic sound just have a trial for the month but people have been telling me that they enjoy having music in the stream so what shall we listen to now medieval adventure we were just listening to indie animation although i'm doing no animation on this particular stream wedding and romance what is comedy what is in the comedy was i trying to say she has been using an app called neighbors or neighborhood which lets you verify your address and then find people who legit live near you to do i don't know meet up for swingers parties i have no idea what you do but she's been looking for people to game with so one of the people who responded to your messages is totally game to game tonight at 7 pm so cheryl's got work in the morning and so we thought oh we'll just play something short and she's like you know what short i said anachrony she goes no you're nuts so can't play inaccurate so i'm going through i have this great if you don't use this you definitely definitely should they've given me no money to say it but man oh man is it ever a great app uh hold on let me get the uh let me get the old camera you already know what's coming up if you use this app already so this is it oop nope that's the wrong one it's an app called bg stats no that's my home screen this is an app called bg stats happens to be on the fleet dice game page right now but you can punch in all the games you own it syncs up with your board game geek collection if you've got one and then you can create play sessions and track your sessions and how long it takes and who you played with and what your scores were and you know be a big nerd and log all your data like that and then it's great because then when you're having somebody over and you want to know how long games take you can actually go up and look at different games you want to play and it'll say well average play time for anachrony is two two and a half hours and then your wife can do the math and say no absolutely not so we were looking for something shorter to play so actually drop drive might fit the bill so we might be able to bust it out tonight we i know that we said i think we settled on either crown of amara or roll for the galaxy those are two nice zippy games to play back to the thing found the piece of artwork by the way that i really really like they put it on the um on the box of the game just dig through and find them again you definitely tell that you know they went with an art collective to illustrate the game so you can tell that a variety of artists israel it all gels pretty well when you can tell that not everybody not you can tell it's not the same artist for all the different character designs or i can tell anyway so this is the guy though that they used on the box that i really like come on focus i thought that guy looked pretty cool he's like a big space turtle it's pretty neat oh this is some jazzy jazzy nonsense pop ambassador next to ship done everyone gets one fuel token to start uh edits pop a fuel token on the ship to create the galaxy this is going to be a pain in my butt to shoot right so i even called it out of the script to create the galaxy put the sun in the middle of the table let there be styrofoam no it's a prototype it's a prototype just because it's the the most non-final looking thing that they sent me what is multipass why do you keep saying multipass i don't know what that means multipass is that is that like the pinball machines that's multiple multipass so this is going to be board empty table look at the card oh is that it says multi-pass let's see yeah it does seem multipass at the top why does it say that i i thought i knew how the game worked and i don't know why it says still working on and it says multi-pass because i think that's supposed to look like it's their passengers this this guy's a passenger so i think that's supposed to look like a train ticket or something multi-pass that's that's what gets this dude to the planet that he's going to the via your ship does that work i hope oh it's also quote from the fifth element i did not know that oh it's a that would be a good excuse me good candidate for the secret life of board games right a little like throwing uh you know pointing out references to things in that series empty table how is it used in the fifth element is it like a train ticket or a like a bus pass i haven't seen the fifth element in ages and i only saw it once and it was in the theater that's how long ago it was that i saw the fifth element great great great great great i wanted i wanted to show the fifth element to my kids not because i super like it but just because i wanted to see the reaction to the opera scene man what a crazy what a crazy sequence that whole thing was empty table pop on sun walls and planets this is like one of these big setup shots that takes a long time for me to do because there's lots of considerations and when i do it stop motion you know when the table piles up with pieces it increases the likelihood that i'll accidentally nudge a piece while i'm putting another piece on the table and if i do that i scrap it all and do the whole shot over again which is why black angel has taken me so long because as you can see behind me there are about 500 000 pieces in that game lots of them are these i mean they're great i love them but they're these little tiny little tiny plastic robots that love love to fall over oh my god oh my god that game pop on sun walls and planets where are we you wrecked the walls to define a play area and put the planet cards nearby the planet cards are double-sided i'll do that digitally i showed you how to play the homework but uh okay great next okay shake up all the stuff put your hands roughly six inches above this one let it drop okay so this will be this is not right delete you hello please delete hello fruit fruit okay so this will be be drop junk i shouldn't call it junk anymore i don't think i call it junk in the script uh [Music] b there's some disco right here grab there's such a fine line between i love funk disco not huge on but there's such a fine line between funk and disco they really they interweave so every once in a while i'll be grooving on a funk track and then they'll bring out those strings and i'll be like i don't know about this anymore that's a ticket to get on the ship in the fifth element yep yep so that's definitely the nod i don't think if i recognized any other references in the card art to anything else i didn't really take a super close look at anything and again they're um they're developing the game too right so i'm sure they have lots of opportunities in the rulebook or wherever to to drop references to other things it's kind of funny the the names the name of your ship you've got a front end and a back end and they've designed it so that there's a name on the front and a name on the back so that's that becomes the name of your ship then as you install upgrades to your ship they're cards that expand your ship in the middle and each card has it has a new modifier to your ship's name so as your ship grows in length it gets this increasingly ridiculous name as it goes on the table it's pretty fun where was i grab a thing stuck to the sun and re-drop it feel like i should be doing the hustle [Music] this is such a short it's such a short game a little bit more inside baseball when uh when clients commissioned me to do these videos ah here we go sorry i'll preempt myself because the the front and the backs of the ships are actually in here so i'll show you a couple [Music] so so there's a back and there's a front so when you put him together it creates the elusive destiny and then let me get an upgrade let me just so then if you get this this card later on in the game you put it in the middle and now it becomes the elusive thirsty destiny so your ship gets kind of goofier as the game goes on if you get those upgrades what was it trying to say the clients when they commissioned me we've worked it out so that there's so much involved in making these videos that if clients just came and they just like oh just i just want a five minute video it's like too much too much work to do too short a video so there's a minimum video length is i guess what i'm trying to say and that is 15 minutes i believe yes 15.

so you'll never see a video that i've done a commission video that i put on rado's channel that is less than 15 minutes well no sorry you will i mean i'll give them a 5 minute video if that's all it takes uh but the the fee is for 15 minutes i guess is what i'm trying to say so this one first of all let's uh let's get rid of this really bad song skipper i can't concentrate when somebody else is saying words and i'm trying to say words at the same time the words i'm trying to say are as follows this script when i scroll through i can see it's just over five pages long but barely and i think i used to be better when i was making these more frequently but i used to be able to look at the page count and determine how long the video would be i think at four pages i think this will probably be probably be a 12 minute video but it's a little bit elastic because depending on what tomfoolery i get up to with the ryan shots or if there are any i don't know if i hold on stuff a little while what is this song is also terrible try let's try this distractingly bad distracting the bad music um what am i trying to say yeah there's a 15 minute minimum this probably won't hit hit the 15 minutes will probably be 12.

but who knows i don't clearly so this part here um the first players whoever most recently felt the effects of a quantum anomaly i wanted to i don't know if i'll be able to do this but i wanted to have a ship a ship a a shot of myself going like and just like like max headroom style smearing and just like just crazy crap going on in the shot where i don't know i don't know if i'll be able to pull that off so i don't know how to break the script up at this point i don't know maybe i'll just make that orion shot and let's see what i can do it would be funny though i think it would be funny what like what does that look like quantum anomaly that player builds an obtuse tool using as many links as his or her ship's drop drive rating dictates straightening uh-huh yep that's the bit i really want to be able to show you but i think that bit is upstairs i can go get that in a moment because it looks like i'm almost at the point where it's time to do some photography but first we gotta put black angel back in the box all right but you can see me getting the flyover shot for black angel because i got it last night but cheryl came down and was talking to me while i was trying to get the super complicated flyover shot that you see at the beginning of all my videos and i wasn't able to tell her just a minute i'm in the middle of this complex shot because i was in the middle of a shot and it was like all i could do to keep my mind on holding the camera and i couldn't say anything to her and then i had to go up later and say like sorry i didn't hear half of what you said because i was in the middle of that complex shot and i couldn't say so but now that i'm thinking back on it i'm worried that i messed up the complex shot so you might see me just in a second take a couple more of those shots just because in order to get that flyover shot i have to set up the entire game for a four player game and with something like black angel that takes a long time so i don't want to put it all away only to discover that i didn't get the the complex flyover shot at the beginning right that player builds a nav tool using as many links as his or her ship's drop drive rating dictates pb some ship at start of game build navtool this song is also terrible these are some bads i don't like this playlist let's get out of here it's bad glitchy gaming cyberpunk let's play happy with navtool straighten up the ship straighten ship then all players in clockwise order follow suit repeat for other layers ah that's tough too because i kind of have to have like other people's hands that aren't mine i don't know how i'm gonna do that sometimes i can script my family to put their hands in the shot but they don't like doing it hmm because i could have just the ships pop in i don't know if that's i don't know we'll see i'll cross that bridge when i come to it first drop doesn't burn your fuel canister bottle successive drops will and now you're ready to play drop drive hooray that's how all my scripts end great so now that that's all done the next step is annotating what i call annotating so i have to go back and make sure that all the shots are numbered correctly so what i do is i'll go down and as soon as i hit a shot that doesn't have a number on it it's b so i will write b on my whiteboard and then i will put a tally mark uh one and then i'll go in here to the comment and this is the thing that i wish could be more easily automated but i don't know if there's a way with google drive if you know of a way this is part of the reason why i'm showing you this behind the scenes process if you know a way to speed me up with any of this by all means let me know this this stepping this step only takes like i've never had it take more than 10 minutes but it feels like it takes an eternity so and just the fact that like it's computers right it can be it can be expedited so it bugs me that i i can't i don't have any control over it cu01 pc01 man this this gamers so i thought i don't know i'll play the kind of video game i like to play i'll play play graphic adventure games or no better yet text adventures like fiction games on twitch there you go and it looks like this solid is just like a black screen with a sentence of text just watch the follow rate just just plummet oh man i don't know what's wrong with me anyway i shouldn't talk i can't talk fascinating process of making a how to play board game video is i take this tally sheet and i go all the way to the top of the list and i pump it down by the way the way the reason i i structured this like this it took a little while to get into this groove but the arrangement that i have worked out with rado is that six months after the video airs on his channel i'm able to air it on my channel just the arrangement is that i i don't post it to boardgamegeek on the game page because that's the spot he wants no problem piece of cake so what i try to kind of do is since most or all of these are for kickstarter campaigns um sometimes six months is i'm finding even too early so what i i kind of want to do is wait until the game actually uh gets distributed to people you know so i'll wait till that i can suss out the month when people are actually going to start getting it in their mailboxes and then i'll repost the video on my site because that might be when people you know are looking for the algorithm recommends it to them i think that's a smart move so i need a version of this video for rado's channel and a version of it for nights around a table so the way i've structured it is very simple now i say thanks rado and he's allowed me to say it's ryan from knights around the table this is a prototype so when i when i do the nice round of table version i just cut out the thanks rado at the top and rado's intro because he intros all the stuff on his channel so that's a pretty it's a nice compromise and a great great fix to really easily before that before i had structured it that way i was actually shooting two different intros of me talking to rado or responding to rado and then and then kicking it off but now i just trim off the thanks rado and it's a much easier much easier fix not fix you know what i mean much easier to crank out a second version oh hello what's going on hey zachara thanks for joining us again i'm warning everybody it's it's it's not an entertaining stream by any stretch of the animation uh imagination put a link on dev discord about numbering comments in google docs oh you're saying that you might have found a method dj muffy i would that would less painful like this one so what i do now that i have my tally sheet with all my shots is i go up here and i write down what my mystifying initialisms actually stand for so that if i have to return to this project a week or a month later i'm not like what is prfq supposed to mean so i say b equals board equals 20 shots and cu equals close-up close-up is like my cheaty kind of like the ibs of shot designations it's just some vague initialism that i can apply whenever you know how a lot of games when you're setting them up it's like uh just put the resources next to the table in a supply well that's it's not a player board shot it's not a board shot and i can kind of get it however i can get it with a completely clear table right and maybe just stick the board so you just see a sliver of the board in the side of the shot so i'll label something like that a close-up it's just my generic whatever how many close-up shots there are six in this one pc is going to be planet cards and there are five of those pb is going to be player board there's not really a player board for drop drive it's little cards that make up your ship but it's the idea it's your player area right player board equals there's 12 shots and then ed is the oh the explorer deck that was a close one and that's going to be two shots and then i do a little tally 20 plus 6 is 26 plus 5 is 31 43 45 45 shots just so i get a sense of the scope of work and then the next step blast eat the microphone oh just saying hey are you near toronto i am i'm an hour east in oshawa from down the 401 oh you're in a kitchen waterloo area well you're on the on the flip side so when i was complaining about the 401 earlier i don't know if you were here for that but you can hopefully commiserate i was just saying that my wife cheryl this week is filling in for somebody at work usually is able to work from home who knows with how the pandemic's gonna go but she's been filling in so she's not a super experienced driver fairly recently got her license and she's been trucking back and forth along the horrible horrible 401 corridor this week and so i'm a little nervous for her yeah i'm in the gt i'm in oshawa which is uh for those of you unfamiliar it's kind of like the detroit of canada though not nearly as rundown or like the flint michigan of canada except without the water and destitution problems i guess and not to make light of anything that people in flint are going through but it was the gm headquarters and then gm like it did like it does in all places pulling up stakes and moving to out of north america to guatemala or wherever they're setting up shop and leaving kind of like an economic hole but the the city thank goodness was able to get a few things going before that inevitable pullout and so we have a college and multiple unit multiple universities in town which is great and we have [Music] a hospital and a cancer center kind of bums me out though that it was like an industrial core and now you're trying to and now we've got a cancer center it's kind of like i know one follows the other but that's oshawa i don't have the sound on it's smart that's a smart move i may be answering redundantly yeah yeah you used to commute by the 401 it is horrible and i think you're on the west side so i think it's even more horrible sacabra in on the west side this is what i didn't appreciate living in the east until i moved until i got actually lived in a condo in downtown toronto for 14 years two different condos and i didn't know this but like young street is basically the dividing line between east and west sides of the gta and most people majority of people live on the west side it's just closer to the bridge down to to buffalo when it just i don't know mississauga is more populated than scarborough which is on the east and so the people who live in the west don't know anything about the east they don't know what kingston is they've never heard like of whitby or any of the of the cities that you find going along the lake to the east side of course they know everything about the west side and just because it's much more populous and busy the the highway is even worse on the west side all that and the airport is on the west end so there's oh it's just a total zoo so as bad as it is on the east i'm super glad that we're not on the on the that west chunk yeah way worse in kitchen waterloo missed a second yeah you're right i agree i agree it's it's paw it's terrible whenever i have to drive on and i used to have the the most recent paid job i had by the way i'm wearing i'm wearing pants right now i don't know why i mentioned that right because i'm talking about being employed by other people where you have to wear pants the most recent job that i had was in the city and it was a full-time gig and it was up in the northwest end of the city so think i'm coming from the east like an hour east of toronto and i had to commute all the way up into an area called the the junction were really hard to get to and it took like a good solid hour and a half and it was through all that like all this snarly allen expressway nonsense i was bad down with pants i agree i hate that i'm wearing them and i can feel them it's almost like they're a monster on my legs and they're trying to chew me off at the waist and just leave me a toppled torso stupid stupid pants but i have to because i'm about to stand up and start doing some uh some photography look at that lights right in my shot the whole time hey sorry about that so in order to do that how are we going to do this we're going to clean up we're going to clean up first and i might have to have to arrange a couple of things let's see what we see when we look down on the table we see a pretty zoomed in view and it's pretty hot pink right now so as i promised this is a little bit of like a like a behind the scenes kind of thing so one of the things i've got going on is i've got this script i had a hard time with streaming in the past because um obs which is the piece of software that i use to to integrate all my cameras and all the fun weird animations and and and all the all the jazz that you're seeing right now all this chrome that's around me and everything i it what am i trying to say you have to you want all your cameras to look like they're in the same room so there's there are all these settings and i think that if i right click on one of them i can show you kind of what that looks like for one of them properties to configure video so let me drag that onto another screen it's not showing up anywhere anyway all the cameras have different settings or they have a settings panel you got to set them all differently so they all look like they're in the same room and then if you ever dare to close obs or restart your computer or if obs crashes all of those settings are gonzo and you have to reset them so every every single time i wanted to do a stream or what i call the street and not a live duty kind of thing i have to reset all these cameras and then something would inevitably go wrong so now grotto clued me into the same day that i discovered it on my own it's the script that you can use web camera config and so if i double click that it will it will apply all these uh the filters and stuff to my camera so that hopefully maybe is looking a little bit better so i'm just gonna do this live you're never supposed to do this this this is gonna be ugly and yucky looking but what i'm gonna do is i'm going to hopefully i can do this here i'm just going to go into properties no yeah something something spooky is going on let me just see what's happening my settings are hiding on me i'm going to go closed you're going to go closed hmm it doesn't want to let me configure the video while i am looking at it which makes sense i think what i have to do is i'm going to go into studio mode oh almost went to university of waterloo that's cool i don't think i knew that okay before i go into studio mode first i'm going to put it on this picture of me and the windows screen that you can stare so you can look at my face getting really confused about what i'm trying to set up here and then i'm going to go to let me just go into settings no i don't think it wants me to configure the video while i'm in the middle of a stream which is fair dinkum that's fine half interesting so this thing is a gimbal here let me adjust this shot down so you can see what's happening yes so you might have seen these things before they're kind of goofy i don't quite know how to use this one and rado actually sent this one to me so that i could do these shots a little bit more smoothly there is a filter that you can put on them to make them more smooth but it kind of like it's called warp stabilizer in um in premiere pro and it kind of you can see in some of my flyover shots that it kind of i don't know makes them look super goofy and weird and like warpy and computery okay so you stick your phone in this thing and then you turn on the power button and it balances it and then and then you have to resign in man can i just say like what a goofy thing that like the way that you sign into your phone is by showing your face and then kobit happens and that that feature is just like the worst idea on the planet okay moving this way back can you see what i'm doing yes sort of all right all right here we go so this is like it's trying to like it's got like a i don't know what the science is beyond it's kind of it's a gimbal you know it means it's like a it's trying to uh counteract the motion of my hand by turning the phone and you can like you can there's a little joystick and you can like move it so that you can tilt up and down like that with a joystick right there thumb joystick i really really really don't know how to use it that well at all and basically all these shots that i take i just kind of luck into them if they look good and you do that just like what you do with any with any photography if you take enough pictures then you know if you take 50 pictures one of them is going to be good i thought it'd be pretty cool with this game to go [Music] but then if i go too far i get my crappy looking carpet and i get like all the junk and jazz piled behind the table so it's a the tough balancing act oh man i should use that piece of music to that shot that would be really cool uh and then i'll get like you know some if the fly bush oh the flyover shot doesn't really work that well i'll try to get some like we call b-roll i guess this is all b-roll but just like some pan overs of different elements on the screen on the on the table and if you're a really pro photographer you have like um like tracks to truck your camera along i am not that guy so one of the tips i know is three points of contact so when you're doing this with a can if any of you do photography you're probably laughing at me right now going what on earth three points of contact when you have a dslr camera you'd have a strap around your neck that's one point you hold it against your body and you hold the thing with one hand and there's your three points of contact and then you take deep breaths and that smooths you out so your shots are less jiggly i'm hoping this will compensate for that a little bit so just to get smooth motion from thing there goes my contact i don't know if this is any good at all we'll get a nice shot of the black angel ship up here uh it's terrible see my arm's too extended it's wiggling a lot i don't know maybe get a lower angle shot no yeah eventually i usually just turn this thing off because i can't i can't really get the control i need from it to do this kind of thing so let me just turn it off and go completely rogue completely manual here we go this is what i wanted i'll put my fingers on the table just to stabilize myself in this shot that i wanted here i don't know i don't know if any of that's gonna look any good at all i have no idea okay that combined with the stuff that i got yesterday i hope will be sufficient for black angel and now i think it's safe to put put the game away are you making fun of apologize yuck no let's play you want to play black angel oh man so here's part of the problem with these games i don't know i can't i can't look at you i'll just talk while i put it away the problem with i discovered i've been watching streams from other board gamers and they don't a lot of them don't play board games so i look at like uh like matthew jude and paula deming will will stream together and they'll go on they'll play jack box so they'll play board games digital versions of board games on steam and one of the reasons is that the screen takes care of the layout for you but when you're trying to do it on a stream like i have this overhead camera and i have to be able to see to be able to show you the whole board plus i have to be able to like zoom in on different areas to so that you'll just be able to see what's going on and that's really hard to do and i would say that most of the time spent getting a stream going is in the prep is in making it so that i've got all my shots set up so i can bounce around the board and you know show you the different areas and stuff and this one i have considered but like if you don't know the game like look at you can see it it's ridiculous the way that the board's laid out to be honest because you've got the main board over here and then this whole outer space thing goes and takes up this is a four over four footer round table and it takes up the whole table and you're supposed to do most of your stuff here and some of your stuff there but like you got to be what like crowded over here but the player boards wouldn't even fit here anyway what i'm saying is it's it's a table hog but not only that it's a table hog in such a way that like it's just impossible to situate yourselves well you know it's a similar kind of thing with everdel if you use the tree the tree like blocks people's sight from a huge chunk of the game and it's just hard to position yourselves around the table and have enough room for stuff it's a similar problem i think that i know through all the testing that that people do on their board games i don't know if they they take into account average table size or layout or where they think people are supposed to put their chairs you know so let's play i'll eventually probably play black angel solo on a stream but today is not that day did a few games of zoom over the past two years and it only worked because i had three webca yeah three webcams right and a laptop on my homemade nine nine by three point five two nine nine feet there's a lot of work be a lot more to actually stream it yeah let me ask how did you when you were playing i guess with just with friends how did you handle um switching views so that people could see the area of the of the table that they needed to see so tell you i've got a couple things going on to help me switch views i'm going to have to sit down because i don't lean i don't lean very well it's a bit stuck um i've got a couple things going on i showed you this before ready to go right this this thing so just to see myself i gotta look behind myself so this touch portal app helps me set views from obs as buttons in it and i can tap those buttons and bounce around so the last one that i streamed was um arnax so that's what it looks like for arnac these green buttons i know that's way far away but i've got a couple green buttons that let me go to the top of the board middle of the board bottom of the board and then the shot of my smiling face takes me to my player board so i can bounce around like that um but then i worry like i've got other panels where i'm playing sound effects and doing other things and showing you those animations like the discord server and everything so i worry that you know i need to be able to switch faster and if i'm on the sound effects page i'm not able to bounce around to the excuse me between the board and the player board that quickly so you may know if you watch some of my streams i've got foot pedals and so i put the i only have three buttons on the foot pedal but i put the most important views on those foot pedals so i have one that does ryan one that does overhead and one that does close up and then anything else is kind of gravy on top of that obs and screw oh yeah you used obs right yeah and one virtual cam for the zoom via obs for the zoom input the zoom input what's the zoom input have you checked out vorpal board i had a demo of that maybe a year ago it was it was an interesting idea the deal is it's sort of supposed to facilitate that exact kind of thing so you've got a game you want to play it with friends and not everybody owns the game and you're like the game master and it would be like i could take so it was a weird combination of physical and digital so you'd have the game set up on the table but you'd also have it represented digitally and people could move their pieces around and whenever they needed a new piece to be able to move around say like this blue robot you'd take it off the table you'd put it under the camera it would scan it and then it would become a graphical piece that people could move around digitally of course it wouldn't enforce any rules so it would be more like tabletop simulator in that way uh it wouldn't like prevent you from putting a piece somewhere or not it was an interesting idea though and very timely too like i don't know if they got it fully to uh out of beta in time for the for the pandemic but it would have been would have been great i think the winner from where i'm sitting in the pandemic vis-a-vis board games is board game arena on the discord server we've been having tons of fun on that website super cheap if you want a membership if you don't have a membership you can still play games and uh i think we all really appreciate having it and if you join the discord server link to discord server you can play games with us you choose which cam you want in zoom and that's the obs virtual uh your setup is kind of the same minus the library and private hosted servers dj was a huge winner nice ui it's set up to take yeah nice for a lot of the games that i've played a couple of the game implementations though i found are kind of dogs so i really like key flower but the implementation on vga is super unforgiving there's no there's no undo and you can tell i think it was like one of the earlier ones they did because it's just kind of like looks a bit uh html5 we were talking about flash earlier like if you wanted me to build that thing in flash i could knock it out of the park for you but um yeah it's uh it's a bit spare and ugly and if you click on the wrong thing tough nuts that's it that's your strategy you can't retract it that's it let me get some music going looking at this view i don't know why it has not yeah no one do is the worst in certain games i don't know why it does that and i'm not too sure why this whole camera has decided not to focus and i look like a soft core porno movie right now i don't know right how many of you uh friendly friends in the chat have uh have played black angel please tell me ortois the spiritual precursor to black angel i haven't played trois uh diem explains one of my patrons in fact my premier patron who's at the top of the premiere patrons list as monarch of the channel actually sent me a copy of black angel this is the copy of black angel that he sent me and uh so i learned to play it and it was one of those ones that you ever play a game that gives your wife a migraine that was this game there's a goofy scoring rule about this where your um your score is capped to you get these special black tiles that do different things and they cap your score at four points unless you do other stuff to to improve that cap and i explained that to her a few times and it kind of like she was tired that night it didn't take and by the end of the game she had the she had the tile that gets her where is it two points for every something every cube so you won't be able to see that but it looks like there's two points for every red cube that you have and she just had this mountain of red cubes and i should have been paying attention earlier and tried to figure out why she was massing all these red cubes i said like okay game's over uh you get four points for those 80 cubes you have on your table and she got kind of annoyed i guess this is a mild term she didn't understand why and i said i you know if you're a game teacher you know this you know this scenario you're like oh i did explain it and the person is like there's so many rules and you're saying like i explained it about four or five times just to make sure you know that that was the situation with the score cap so she wound up not liking this game very much but i played it with her and my friend dave who you'll meet on a stream and on and uh i think we both quite enjoyed it dave and i both have adhd and so it's the kind of game where you're bouncing around like duh i gotta do this and i gotta flip that and i gotta roll that die but i gotta do this at the same time it's one of those where you're bouncing all over the place certain brains thrive on that kind of chaos has a lot of upkeep too yeah you're right if you've ever played this on uh i mean i think omelette i think you've played it on tabletop simulator and it's just like i couldn't imagine look at all these pieces it's finicky as heck in real life and a tabletop simulator where you got to click and drag everything all over the place i can only imagine i think dmx planes keeps trying to rope me into a game on tabletop simulator i'm like yes right away sounds like a blast for the next five hours oh but omelette was saying that was that you omelet saying that the big news is that it looks like maybe somebody's working on a bga version of dracarian which is one of my top games so that would be really nice to see talk about finicky because we played that one time on tabletop simulator the crew and i and what was our game it was like six hours long or something and part of that was the game admittedly but part of that was because you're you know clicking and dragging and fussing with things all the time this game would be lovely to have an insert for wouldn't it you ever do this you ever put a game away and like somehow you took it all out of baggies and then putting it away you don't have enough baggies to put put stuff back in how did i even get it out to begin with right oh listen to that adventurous piratey music i would so be up for tricarion did you play that game with us dj marpy on um on t on uh tabletop simulator that day i forget who's playing i remember omelette was playing i can't remember who else was in with us oh let me think was away his board game they thought it would stay on the table forever they were wrong this summer ryan creeden in a no holds bar i don't know cheryl creighton as the disappointed way i don't know just this one just this one you know what another one that she had a similar reaction to didn't even play it though omelette was over and we put uh prague put regni on the table and cheryl took one sat down took one look at it smelled headache and bailed [Laughter] because she was just like she just noped out of there so quick like i do not have time for this nonsense uh which is a drag but i think i mentioned that i've been on vacation which is why my streams have suffered a little bit but i'm just gonna put all these in a bag i don't care i don't care anymore anyway i bought my own copy of praga and put it out on the table on our little honeymoonie anniversary board game fest and she loved it she thought it was a great time which was surprising to me but i loved that she loved it now here's another story from our our little retreat we spent most of our time by far uh i buy i've had a copy of anmar she got it for me for christmas last year and it has stayed in shrink this entire time and since then you may have seen past streams where eagle griffin games sent me five or six more games and they remained in shrink and finally like eight months later in august i was able to open up all those games on mars included so i thought what a golden opportunity that we have being tucked away in this little cabin it wasn't a cabin it was a house but anyway tucked away in a you know whatever space with each other to go through this game and then play it and give it its propers and it seemed like a good idea at the time so we sat down at 6 00 p.m after finding our bearings and i opened the game and it was unpunched so we punched it up fine and uh we set it up on the table and that took us to maybe 6 30 setting it up punching it out and we decided to go get pizza so we grabbed a pizza and we came back so maybe that took us to seven maybe and i thought oh just like we did with a much smaller game from eagle griffin uh fleet the dice game we'll sit down and learn it together we'll go through the rule book so i uh i open it up talk about king of boring boring pastimes i open it up to page one and we put our heads together and we start reading the rules and it only takes a page before she's like i'm not into this why don't you go read the rule book and you teach me how to play i'm like oh but but honey we're here we got no no so she goes and reads some other book while i spend the next hour and a half reading the instructions for on mars by the end of that i was like super sweaty i'm like man i gotta i gotta teach you this game before it all leaks out of my brain because i've mentioned i don't have the best memory in the world so we sit down this is a long story i'll get back to chat in a moment uh not that long we sit down and we go to play and i'm trying to teach it to her and the clock is like spinning and so eventually she just says like i'm tired i can't learn anymore my brain is full we gotta go to bed we'll pick it up in the morning i said okay fine uh so that was from six to midnight that's when we went to bed it was on the table for six hours and we didn't even we'd even take a single move you know we were watching other people's videos and i mean i didn't find them quite adequate to teach the game so anyway we get up in the next morning and i think around i don't know when we started playing i don't know 11 or noon and uh and it stayed on the table and we played and we finished the game we finished our first play up on mars at like 6 p.m that evening so it was on the table for a full 24 hours before we were able to get one two player game of on mars in epic and ridiculous but as we figured out later like when else would we have the time to sit and devote to that i thought it was a really good marriage project because you know it showed that we could tackle something challenging together and we could prevail and excel and you know get her done and we had fun doing it too and this is the crazy thing as soon as we got home she's like set up on mars on the table in the living room we can chip away at it and take turns like every night i want to play it i want to play it i want to play it so she quite liked it ah right chat what's going on i have the opposite problem so so much light suit i always end up with extra bags yeah that can happen too uh dj mockv has not played unmuted at last oh you can hear what i'm saying believe me you have not missed much i'm convinced if i play a game enough i will eventually only need one one bag who was i talking to or was it somebody doing a stream where they said that they know somebody who just when they're done they just they don't put anything they scoop everything into the box and throw it on the shelf just like in a big like dice tower style peep and throw it on the shelf and it's like oh my god and the idea is like if they never play that game again what's the point in spending a chunk of their life organizing and putting it in bags and that is the probably the most horrible thing i've ever heard in my life i believe it might be a war crime i'd have to look that up but that that just sounded the worst even if i never play a game again in my life i like the idea that it's everything's neatly nestled away and tucked and i i should really 3d print an insert for this one if i'm going to play it a bit more hey michael i was gutted that i couldn't join oh the trickerian game yeah didn't start within a world you know it could in a world ah that's promising news for me and praga why michael are you planning on playing praga with your wife or with my wife uh uh i'm pretty sure that's against the geneva convention you are right i think i think only a good old steak burning is the only way to solve that one just teach that person by fire so i was watching a tick tocker whose handle i forget he was going over another game that has this same kind of uh what is it when they they roll logs under a platform and they take a lock from the back and put it in the front to keep the thing rolling that's kind of how the how the strips in this game work to make the spaceship appear as though it's traveling to a location and there's another game that one of these three designers who made black angel and one of them went on to use this concept for another game and i forget the title of that game right now but maybe in chat you can tell me what the title is but it was very blue game and when you take one piece you take it from the back to the front and flip it and so that was happening in this other game except it was flipping flipping from night to from day to night time so you got a night cycle in there as well which is kind of interesting does anybody know you think steak burning is against the geneva convention also while who ever asked you no nobody wants your opinion on whether or not we can burn someone at the stake it's a moral issue we'll burn whoever we like i got i got steak burning i think i threatened dj mark b with steak burning earlier in the week just because i got steak burning on the brain because i'm reading the name of the rose and before that i was reading this series called the shard like series which is about a hunchback lawyer in late medieval period solving murders you know that's what hunchback lawyers tend to do and so i just like for months and months and months i've just had non-stop medieval torture and stake burning on the brain i don't know boy are you guys ready to see a little bit of drop drive i don't know how many pictures i'm gonna be able to take because i gotta split soon 327 yeah we can do a little bit do a little bit so you'll finally be able to get to see this i don't know if the client is watching any of this but he's probably sitting at home going like oh my god show the game already why did i tell him it was okay to do this why righto all right now what i'm gonna do should i do that can you see that i'd love for this not to be behind me i'll put it on a different monitor that's an excellent book with the shardlink series or the name of the rose because if you're saying the name of the rose is excellent i will challenge you on that i uh here's the situation my wife cheryl decided in her wisdom and i think this is a smart choice our kids were staying up too late and it's because the internet was on and they were goofing off on the internet so we decided last year to cut off internet access at 10 10 p.m fine but the device we got cut it off for the entire house which meant that i got no internet access at 10 pm so i couldn't goof off on tick tock or whatever either which is a drag so i started reading books and that's why i was able to read so many of the chard leg books so i was reading reading reading every night at 10 and i got through tons of books i read foundation that was also terrible charred like i liked but there were problems anyway so then i eventually got to the name of the rose and it was summertime so we started turning the internet back on at 10 pm and so it has taken me months to read in the name of the rose or the name of the rose and i think that i don't know it's just going really really slowly i find it really difficult the guy drops latin phrases all the time without really defining what they mean you're just kind of like expected to know latin or like pick it up in context which i think is a little bit disrespectful to the reader in berto ecko he's he's italian and he's a professor and so i guess he just expects everyone reading the book to be super smart i am not super smart i'm doing my very best with this book what do you have to say about name of the rose foucault's pendulum yeah didn't we talk about this before dj mark p you said you liked the close pendulum i have not read that but i just find man oh man i'm one to talk about people talking too much but those monks in the name of the rose like it's supposed to be supposed to be a taut murder mystery and i don't find it taught at all because most of the book is just them like blah blah blah about medieval protocol and and dogma this by the way is a sticky roller and i'm using it because um one of the requirements of making videos for rotto's channel the channel manager uh requested that i use a table covering a black table covering and we tried a bunch of different things and the only thing that i found that really worked was this nice piece of velvet that i picked up at a fabric store the pro there are a couple of problems with it one of them is that you can you can discern the weft is that the right word the pile you can see lines in it when i i don't know if you can see that with the lighting the way it is but you can if i move stuff like if i drag a card or something around you'll be able to see a trail left from the card which is kind of a bummer so that's problem number one problem number two the much bigger problem is that it picks up lint and hair like you would not believe so if you watch my videos that i put on rado's channel and you see fluff or fuzz or stuff it's not because i'm extraordinarily filthy or because i didn't bother to clean the table but just like but you can't see it from here but with the naked eye from down where i am just you'll do this i'll roll it i'll be fastidious about it and then seconds later all kinds of little linty white marks will show up and they're extremely visible on camera like because it's a high contrast thing it's like a white fleck against a black background so i'll do my best and sometimes i'll even in post i've photoshopped out little flecks and stuff but i've even looked at rados videos and i can see flecks and the occasional little like squiggle hair or whatever they're not short and curly don't worry um but like i have i have cats so sometimes i track cat hair and i know rado has a dog so maybe he's got a couple of dog stray dog hairs that wind up on his table but it's a pain in the butt and this is one of the things i do to to combat it but again if you have any we looked at getting um a uh what's it called neoprene mat but another thing is that one of the ways that i do what i do is i use some sticky tack to stick things to the table to be able to flip them and stuff and the real big drawback behind having a table covering like this is the sticky tack won't stick to this and if it does i'll pull it off and it'll you know create a big wave and stuff will fall over so i can't do as much stop motion stuff with this black table covering if i have it just on the naked yellow wood ikea table i can stick things a lot better and do more animation like that right drop drive and now so i think maybe i'll do because of them they'll be the most interesting for you to look at or at least i'll just set up the components so you can see what's going on i don't know if that's going to be too dark for you to even see but the lighting seems to be okay these are you can't can you see any of that i don't know if you can see any of that let me know if you can see these black walls or not these black walls define the play area let's get some space music on go music shopping with me gaming electro let's look at can we get like psy go away probably didn't get a very good sense of the game from that scripting exercise at the beginning of it now you'll really see what it's about now you'll taste the true power of the drop drive here i'm worried though that i'm missing a crucial crucial thing oh no it's in there all good these are now i'm really worried about these thin walls about knocking them and wrecking a shot but this is most of the stuff that gets dropped and i'm only supposed to have five of each crystal one two three four five not oh no or six of each crystal hold on i might have to check the email it's jump able to see a little bit of how i'm framing the shot if you were on the last work stream i did where i was doing photography what i had it all set up really really nicely and i spent a lot of time doing it so that you could actually see my phone set up and you could see through the eyes of the phone to what was going on in the table but then my my shutter button stopped working and the reason the shutter button stopped working is because i was beaming it out to the screen so i can't do that anymore unfortunately unless they patch the or fix the app me just double check to see what the client says about those tokens drop drive asteroids the idea is publisher by the way phase shift games it just slipped my mind until i saw the email oh this is a bit heavy this music's heavy for what's going on almost there the game prototypes came with seven of each asteroid color but you should only use six of each have a link to their kickstarter uh for people to be notified when it goes it's funny the one thing that i i was i was kind of okay with there being like i was gonna say another thing that causes a lot of uh like flex and stuff on the table on the black cloth is that it's just it's flipping board games right so they're cardboard so they shed all this little pulp and paper nonsense everywhere so you think you get the thing clean and then you just put a put a player mat down and suddenly it's like board game dandruff all over the place so i thought it would be sort of semi-okay if a few flecks show up because it's outer space and those are stars can't find the thing i'm looking for i think the thing i need is on the other side of the table i'm going in so so because when you're doing stop motion it's important for everything to stay still and tablecloth fights against that i have table clips that keep everything in place but i've not been very good about putting them away properly so i can only find one in the box which is a drag as we say in the business but at the very least i'll be able to clamp that part of the table down um it's weird man i don't know where the rest of my table clamps went oh well and then i have this clamp yeah you're not the only one who can't find anything kickstarter it's weird like if you know the things on kickstarter and you know the title and you know the publisher and you you type in the title in the publisher it search won't find it it's weird yes it's important to put the phone on do not disturb where you start photography and the app i mentioned that i'm using to take the photos is called pro camera but i really can't recommend it because of those bugs i mentioned um so you won't actually be able to see what i'm doing with the camera because of the bugs which is kind of a crappy situation but uh oh but actually the first couple of shots that i needed to get are the actual drop shots so let me work on those they're video shots not stationary or static shots so one thing i like about pro camera is that it lets me set my uh my white balance by number so i've got that locked in and then i can set the um i can lock the exposure so that the exposure's not constantly changing depending on what i put on and take off of the table which is great but the cons are starting to outweigh the pros with this thing ooh that's kind of like a lot of it's a lot of stuff to put in the old hannah rooneys i don't know if this looks nice no it looks about as nice as it's gonna look because it's prototype i don't think i can make that look any better and the styrofoam is really really bluff off okay here we go yeah the uh the fluff's gonna be an issue so i'm switching over to filmic pro for my actually i don't know i don't need to actually pro camera i just remembered they added a video video feature to it i believe how do i get into that how do i get into the video feature i don't know am i wrong i might be wrong yeah this game seems to be made for tom vassell's review drop exactly it's it's tom vassell's review drop the game aha i've discovered it video of course now it's changing my white balance entirely oh my god okay for good or for ill let's uh let's get going and do the drop they say so the elusive has a drop drive rating of three so you put three of these links together let me just check the different drop drive ratings on the cards and see what we're dealing with here that's a back so the front four seven oh my god i can go to seven five i'll do five maybe five is average so we'll do five five or six the idea is you straighten it out and that's the height from which you drop your stuff into the arena so the bigger your drop drive rating kind of like the more unpredictably your ship alarm one one two three four five i said i was going to be right okay this is the blue ship so i have to drop the blue ship from a different height with different nav tool lengths okay oh that thumb of mine oh yuck i wonder if i can this is why i don't like having hands in the shots because like what if your hands are disgusting i i was making pasta sauce a week ago and it was you know how it like does that weird thing where it's like it doesn't look like it's hot but it's basically molten lava and you every once in a while a little evil bubble will form and it'll poop and i'll start spurting and what you don't know is that um third degree burns are around the corner well uh i took the lid off and that little sploosh of pasta sauce jumped out of the pot and hit me on the thumb like just basically seared its way down to the bone so now i have a little burn on my thumb that i don't think looks very good on camera i wonder if i can position my hands so that you can't looks kind of goofy right now if i can hold it with this hand and drop with this hand ah no like no matter what i do like that looks weird all right this is uh either i do this later or i take extreme measures you do when your extreme measures can't be taken desperate times call for this we'll do the whole thing in one shot instead of doing a man the um the white balance is really off though in this shot it's terrible very yellow shot you can't see that just trust me maybe i'll the camera filmic i know exactly where to set the numbers 4200 white balance that should be good i see a stray hair that found its way in there which you can barely see sitting here but will show up like a lightning bolt on the final thing i can see a lot of this you might not be able to see it on your view but a lot of this like dandruff is going to show up and i'll have to like treat it with color later to okay what am i supposed to do drop an asteroid and drop a blue asteroid and a salvage okay no problem let's like pretend that it's a completely different shot i like to do that i like to like reset between shots but i'm worried though that repeated droppings of things on this temporary styrofoam sun will dent the sun that's good enough no not enough not good enough oh this is going sense yes yes it does let me just double check so if i go with the opulent its rating is five so i should be able to do this with five link one two three four five and again i'll pan this around and
