Let's Go Hunt Some Gen Con Games!
Transcript
It's the last day of Gin Con and I finally have time to go walk around the vendor hall and hunt for the 15 games that I was most excited about. Will I find them all? Only time will tell. I almost immediately ran into Seventh Seal. This is a solo game and it's a boss battler where you are rolling dice and using your results to make attacks or set up your defense and try and fight off minions before you take on the ultimate boss. It is absolutely gorgeous. This art by Will Kirkby. Holy cow. Next, I spotted Kano. And boy, when you're talking about a beautiful game. This is all about gathering up paint pots in the right patterns and getting them on your scroll so you can make a painted scroll. It looks puzzly and beautiful. And I cannot wait to try this solo mode.
I stumbled next upon Aya. This is all about using a mancala mechanism to sew seeds, to build your deck, to score points. I love a mancala. And right next to it, my lucky day, Wizard Community College. Now, this is a game that relies heavily on your willingness to roleplay whether or not you can get your spell successfully cast to defeat whatever challenge has been set before you. I watched a little bit of a group demoing this and it looked like they were having a blast, but it does look pretty group dependent. And then I spotted Enchanted Ivy, a solo game from All Play. Look how adorable it is. It's all about laying out your tiles as you're building out an inn and putting people in specific places to score points. And it has a story mode.
I didn't get to see an actual demo of Queen's Dilemma, but I did spot it on the convention floor, and I do want it. The last game on my wish list that I managed to find was Seeker of Spells. Program your mushroom dudes movement around the board to collect books, which gets you points and powers. And if you don't keep your books safe, they can be stolen by the other players. I thought this game looked like a delight. So, I found about half of the games I was looking for. Could have been worse, could have been better. But I did also find a lot of other games that I thought looked interesting. And here they are coming at you quickfire like
Fantastic.
