10 New Roll & Write Board Games | Which Is Our Favorite? Innovation and Combos Galore!
Transcript
hello everybody my name is Ilia my name is Tyler together you makeup covery a couple that loves to play board games and rolling rights one could say we even did a whole month about rolling rights are we starting another month no oh but we are doing uh 10 new rolling right games that we want to share with you so we did a whole month long about two years ago now where we shared over 50 rolling rights what we thought of them our thoughts then a year from then we did uh almost a review here's 10 News 10 new so now here's 10 more new ones we're rolling into the future wow big shout out to Second start to the left because they just did a rolling right month and we had a lot of we had a few chats about there's so many fun names that you can name this content rolling into the future a re-roll this is a re-roll because we're re-rolling back to the now the true re-roll will be our top 10 re-rolled which has definitely changed I feel like yeah there has been have been a few since our latest update I feel like mine would be nothing like it was really I don't think mine I feel like there's gonna be the same but I think those positions might shift around yeah but there's a lot of the newer ones that would have definitely made the list yes some of the newer ones that we've played recently have been hot so if you want to see a new top 10 rolling rights of all time video yes let
us know down in the comments below and we'll we're easily swayed yeah easily swayed by persuasion so maybe but what are rolling rights if you're new to her Channel we have covered them before but generally they're a type of game where you either roll the dice or now there's a lot of variations there's a lot of variations flip a card you can flick a disc you can share something you can draw some bag there's there's a lot of things you can do but generally you do an action and then you write stuff down and the key um trade of a lot of rolling right games is there's a lot of combos yeah our favorite thing about or what we Define as like a high quality roll and write is a game that successfully makes you be able to get those combos because one time you're over here you mark this off you have to mark this off you mark this off and it feels like a just a multi-tasker's dream it feels like a little bit all over the place but you know you're just succeeding and that feels good yeah yeah it sure does well today we're gonna jump into 10 new to us I believe they're all new new engine yeah but you knew um they're new to us and we just wanted to share our opinions on them and give you some insight into what kind of role in rights or blanket writes these uh new games are I feel like the theme for this list is very much of a little bit of variation of what that role the action aspect is because there's definitely
some unique takes on in this list I have not seen before I think what gets me more and more excited about playing Roland rights is the creativity that is going into creating like something unique and the unique experience that you have while playing the game which I guess can be broadly spread across board games in general but uh recently I think rolling roll and rights have been doing a really good job at that and I'm really excited to talk about these 10 games today me too well let's Dive Right on into it so to kick things off we're gonna talk about a share and write a Sharon right what the heck is that well it's take a seat so this one's designed by Eloy purjadas and foreignaleas and is published by salt and pepper games and in this game you're essentially standing in front of a theater and sitting everybody down you're gonna be like you sit over here use it over here your group of people go over here but it's a thematic seating before a potential show yeah it could be a Broadway show it could be a musical theater some it's really up to whatever you want it to be any kind of thing Taylor Swift could be there what maybe but the way that this game works is generally you have your own board yeah and the action aspect of this is you have the sideboards and once you're right and one to your left and you'll take turns working on one of them and Crossing off a potential action or victory points yep and then taking a group of people and putting them in your board now when you take a group of
people the group size shrinks you'll have to shrink it first and then you write it down and there's a little bit of area control well there is area there is area control in the four different sections that you're trying to between you and the player to your right and right so there's a lot going on in terms of that but generally you're working to accomplish the goals in the center they also scoring multiple points the area control will score you multiple points and let's see how this scoring opportunity well from the actions you decide to take because whether or not you're going to take the right actions or not is up to you because you can't rotate or flip yeah you have to write in very specific sections corresponding to where the audience members are so there's some restrictions that you can free yourself from but by doing so you're gonna give up victory points at the end of the game so yeah it's a give and take it's very clever you can play with up to six people until two to six for you I think solo mode is it a solo mode yeah one to six one to six yeah there is a solid model oh yeah because there's solo cards so one to six players it's really fun in a six player account because it doesn't take long no because you're all doing the same thing in simultaneous play but generally I love the theme I love the creativity behind it it's a fantastic game yep I think the action selection between like grabbing the or using the board on your right then passing it to Max person to use and then going to your left using that I think the back and forth is really really neat and that's where the share comes in to play the area control is a very very interesting add-on to this
game I'll say that like I wasn't 100 sure about it when we had first started playing it but once we got going it felt almost um I didn't realize how many points you could get from it and it is one of those things that you do have to be aware of but also at the same time balance between what you're putting or how you're seeding your guests versus uh taking a shape to maintain control or to throw somebody else's control off now it's really hard balancing act too because Tyler could be in a section I'm like I don't care about seeing those people that's not where the goals are but he's going in there so I should probably be competitive and not let him get a run away with it because if you win both of the person on your right and left section is 20 points which is a lot because typically you don't score 100 points in this game game yeah yeah 20 points is a lot of points so don't uh don't take it lightly if you ever get to play in this one exactly well and that's take a seat next up let's talk about this one right here called distant sun it's designed by Gary Kim and Yan Min Jung and it is published by ILO is that how you say that a yellow I don't I think it's like yeah I don't know how to pronounce it okay well regardless i-e-l-l-o spelling for in this game what you're going to be doing is basically uh scouring this Galaxy with all these um different planets uh different uh
technologies that are kind of like out there uh but you do this in such a neat way because it is it's like a how would I describe it it's not a role in right oh a choosing right that's yeah it conveniently just says on the back so it's a choosing right and what you're going to do is on your turn you're going to choose one of these tiles that basically has like your action everybody else's action and you'll put it on the main board and what that that does is makes you choose which shape you're going to draw which corresponds to a specific action as well and then what shape your opponents are going to draw so like many Roland rights many blanken rights you are always having to do something even if it's not your active turn so that's great but then you can also like shift back and forth between making people draw a certain shape that they maybe don't want or you can focus like prioritize your shapes which is really really fun the way that the board is set up is it sometimes can restrict the whole round from four turns to five turns just based on the nodes that they have and I think it's a lot of fun when it comes to the shapes and the different actions it just ends up being super varying because you do select the shapes that go onto the main board and where they Land Based on the action so it's pretty cool and the shapes are unique too and what I like is that they have
little cutouts of the shapes so you can actually place them and Trace them oh yeah it is harder to visualize sometimes of like how so it's sometimes hard to visualize but you don't need to worry about that because there's shapes you can grab and then place them and try to figure out what the best way the fit's gonna be yeah rotate it however you want and then the other thing too is there's like the special shapes that you can draw they've got little um they're all associated with some kind of thing so like a black hole you can actually like get creative and draw inside of it and it's pretty pretty simple that you'll have to draw like Mark them yeah but the board ends up being really pretty and the objectives are all like there's a couple of races you're trying to get to the corners and be the first player to race them and a lot of other common elements that we see in Rolling rights but generally it's a really fun game and I really like the almost take that aspect of making your opponent choose based on what you pick yeah it is really interesting because sometimes you're trying to race and you're like oh I don't want to give them a really like direct straight line to there so yeah I'll give them this like a little piece or a black hole yeah exactly so yeah it's really fun I really enjoyed distant Suns yeah so that's distance sense moving on to the next one so next up we have retrograde which is kind of Spacey it's very arcady it works out from distance and it's nice are you trying to make a transition yeah are you trying to pew pew in space always so retrograde is designed by Mary Flanagan and Max seidman and it's published by resonant in this game you're essentially
in an arcade and just enjoying the Nostalgia of those blasting those little critters out of there Space Invaders Space Invaders but there's a speed element in this game because what you'll do is you'll have your dice and you'll start rolling as soon as you have the dice that you will want to use you can grab one of the action cards and those will be the ones that you can actually attack on your own player sheet yeah yeah no they have to match your dice that you're using yeah you have to get a certain amount of dice the or like the dice that you want to use and then you get the card and only the ones that match you're able to cross off yes so and you can work your way in trying to get as much points as you can by defeating the bosses at the very end by being strategic with how you take the cards that you take and I really like the aspect of being the race because sometimes someone really needs a certain type of color and you're just getting it and you got it and you take it you take it away from them and sometimes you can even take it without having anything but then you don't really get to draw anything that's not fun yeah no one really does that I'm really slow at this one so like I've I've had moments where I think we're playing a four player game where I just like I the leftover card yeah and I think after everybody else is done rolling you only get a certain number of rolls so like even if I see the leftover card and now I'm thinking oh I have to roll all of these Dice and hope that I get matching symbols for this card or my turn kind of goes to waste but I will say that it's really cool because there's like immediate benefits that you can also gain from the cards there's uh
ongoing benefits that like upgrade your arcade experience and it is really neat you basically like horizontal and vertical lines really get benefit you there's a bunch of different ways to score points and it does feel like you're playing a video game one thing I really like about this game is at the end of the game you flip you it comes out and that's your score but it does it feels very thematic because even when you're rolling this it feels like you know people people are trying to like jam the buttons to try to make the best of it it really translates to that and they ask for your like three letter initials which I think is very clever too very very like nostalgic yeah very fun yeah that's retrograde retro great that's so great okay the next one we want to talk about is Dice kingdoms of valyria so this one is designed by Levi mote and it's published by daily magic games we actually were able to do a preview for this game which was a lot of fun and now we're excited that it's being fulfilled and we had to talk about it again today so in dice kingdoms of valyria what you're doing is managing uh duchy I think that's what it's called so it's like a kingdom Village and you're helping build it up you're going to basically roll dice on your turn that have restricted dice that for yourself to use but then also a set of dice that everybody playing will get to use you'll
be able to use them in different ways and combine them in different ways and you'll Branch out into exploring your kingdom defeating monsters recruiting new citizens that will help build up your duchy and combos exactly and then throughout this whole game you'll be able to build up these combos the nice thing about it is you could also work towards the end game game goals well some of them are immediate effects but you can collect coins throughout the game and uh build statues within your statute and you can strategize because there's like six out on the field and you can get you get to pick one when you cross off the statue sign and that can really help you like decide how you want to strategize to play the game what you want to go for for end goal and it's just been a lot of fun to play it actually kind of gives me Vibes of like very much lighter but of uh Hadrian's Wall that's what I was gonna say it definitely is like if you I really really enjoy Hadrian's Wall and this is like baby not baby Asian small but it's a slightly lighter Hadrian's Wall which is really fun the combos are incredible uh I really like the simultaneous play because every time everyone's really doing something and there's so many opportunities to Branch your strategies because you're really not gonna all do the same thing which I really like yeah and the art is beautiful yes it really is my favorite my one favorite thing about this game too is because it has a lot of Combos and is a little bit more on the heavier side is they've laid it out so easy to be able to follow the
symbols you call her in a night you go on the night track you call her in a green square you're building a path and you color in a red shield well you get a free attack on a monster and that's so nice it makes the game Run so much smoother for a way better experience exactly and that's dice kingdoms of valyria exactly so up next the game I want to talk about is episode two vengeance fight no roll and fight I almost did it almost roll and fight so this one is designed by David terti norly lovers and Gordon kalea and it is published by Mighty borgs in this game you're all gonna have your own character your own scenario Your Own Boss and you're gonna utilize dice to fight out of there you wanna make sure you deal as much damage reach as many objectives and hit that boss hopefully eliminating them by the end of the four rounds now this game really surprised me for a lot of reasons yeah yeah generally um I'm not really drawn into the fight or the violence type of theme but the way that the mechanics are utilize in this game is very clever in the beginning everyone's gonna there's gonna be three days they're rolled and they're gonna be almost like a preparation stage yeah where you'll do some training you'll maybe get new abilities you'll get ready you'll get cue up some ability so you're ready to move in and punch
some people yeah um but then you're gonna simultaneously all at the same time start rolling Dice and as soon as you assign Dyson ability you're gonna get more dice you fill your pool your dice pool back up to four yeah so there's and and then in a four player game there are so many dice in the middle of the table that everyone's just rolling grabbing rolling and grabbing and you essentially want to walk your character through this various situ situation and there's ten different ones you can even do um and make sure you deal some damage to some grounds because they probably did some bad stuff and you're there for justice yes Tyler played Meat Boy I played Meat Boy it was very fun this yeah this game was is wild actually because you're rolling these dice hoping that you get these sets and if you get these sets you grab more dice but the wild thing about it is as you're rolling these dice other people are also taking dice so you begin to stress out you're like I'm not gonna have enough moves to do what I want how do I make this work and you're just almost panicking as you're rolling these Dice and it felt very much like a um like a Time driven game which it is not at all but you do really want to be able to try and grab those Dice and it makes for an interesting strategic planning because you sometimes have to decide do I do I exhaust these dice or put them into the ability that I want to use for after all the dice are gone and we're ready to do that phase it definitely gives me like a video game Vibe too which I think was really cool basically is going from like room to room to feeding all of these grunts hoping to eventually get to the boss and the scoring was like really
close I think um you don't always have to beat the boss to claim victory which is always nice because sometimes you just can't get to them kind of thing uh and maybe you want to just explore what else is going on with those objectives get those various other elements I like too that each character has different items they have different abilities and out of all the abilities you're not going to get all of them so each game you can try to toy with different abilities So based on character you pick there's so much variability in this game and this is episode two we have not played episode one yeah I really want to play episode one now because yeah I simply fell in love with this game I can't wait to play more and it's a really cool take how everyone is really doing their own thing but utilizing the same nice pool so yeah I thought that was a very unique way to do a rolling right so where are the other games they roll the action as changes where the role here the other aspect has changed you fight instead of right fight for your right to the party and that's vengeance the rolling fight I halfway point we are on to the sixth game and I would like to talk about the Phil Walker Harding game explorers explore this one is published by Robin and it's a flip and write it basically what you're going to do in this game is flip over a tile that will have two different terrain types and you get to pick which terrain type you're going to do the other players get to do
the other terrain type now once you've picked the terrain type you're going to cross off uh three I believe of those terrain types and you're just trying to collect different things around the board activate different abilities throughout the board go through different goals to try and really ramp up your game so that you can do even better later on the cool thing about this board is it's module so what you're going to get is like this um almost like a TV box type thing and you're gonna put four different squares into the I like it notice yeah four different cubes or squares into your board and then everybody else is going to copy that board and now you're ready to play there's a lot of different goals that you can go for there's a lot of different there's just a lot of unique different goals that you've always got to be paying attention to and then it's very satisfying to run through that collection like my favorite part about this game is oh I need like one more apple or oh I need like let me get that horse so I can make that extra move to combo off and go even further and cross over collect a key like it's very very very fun and it felt like a Dungeon Crawler yeah thing yeah it really captures the theme of exploring that yeah yeah it really yeah you start out somewhere you go and you really make your own Journey do you want to get the fish do you want to get the apples I think there's so many different ways you can score so that's what makes it exciting so you can really build a strategy not everybody has to do the same thing yeah but with the tiles the flipping I think there's a lot of clever
aspects to it and I also really like this to dry erase because that's always a joke yeah exactly yeah uh dry erase is fantastic and like this game has like a set collection and everything in it so it's just like a good rolling right I think we actually did a full review of this game earlier in the year as well so you can check that out as well if you want to learn more about explorers now up next I want to chat about get on board get on board so this one's designed by asashi and it is published by Aiello and it is a two to five player traveling game you're gonna have a little bus and your bus is going to go around either New York or London and you're gonna pick up passengers you're going to drop them off you're going to avoid traffic you're gonna optimize the best possible route for your bus based on little tickets that come out yeah so it's a very fun game it's another one of those multi approach where you can do what you want to do you can really take it the direction that you want to go and just have a joyous time the best part of this game too is everyone's building their own route at the same time so you can see everyone's around begin to crowd the board and if and impact the place exactly because all of a sudden if you're impeding someone else's route that's traffic yeah that's slower no one likes traffic yeah exactly no one does but there's different types of passengers each passenger scores in various capacities in different capacities So based on how you pick people up and drop people off you can score a certain amount of points it's a
gorgeous game I would highly recommend it there's tickets they've got like punch holes in them it's very that's super cool very super super cool it's just like this small touch that like elevates the game it's great bye so much too yeah yeah because it's definitely something that makes you look forward to it as well yeah but this one's always a joy for us to bring I also like that it's five player as well yeah yeah so you can play with a higher player count and that gets even more fun because it gets even more crap the more players you play with the more chaotic this game gets and I think I appreciate that I definitely say I feel like it shines at three uh the other thing that I thought was very clever in this game is the shapes that you end up drawing they're all the same as ever like everybody else has access to the exact same shapes except for what they've done is they've changed it so that every ticket corresponds to a different shape I don't think it's I don't think it's like uh perfect in that sense but for example like if I drew one green colored ticket my shape yeah my shape would be like the um Tetris tee or uh and then Ilyas would be like two two like a two two block and I'm pretty sure every sheet is a little bit different there's like a set of sheets that are different yeah so you're always playing with a little bit different yeah I also think the boards actually correspond to maybe player count maybe I'm remembering wrong because I think it's working out of London because it's bigger so I think if I remember correct that might be actually it so yeah I just remember playing the four player game and it was
pretty pretty chaotic chaotic so it was a lot of fun there's just like things that happen when you do create an intersection um like there's two-way streets there's one-way streets for example they pay attention to tricky tricky or high traffic and you kind of want to go around it but in essence the game ends up being this cool like set collection um route building and right I guess is a good way to put it it's a flip place on the right it really is a flipping right yeah with the added placement of Rogue building fun fun there you go the next game we're going to talk about is called Twilight inscription this game is designed by James kniffen and is published by Fantasy Flight it is a Roland right uh it's one to eight player yes yeah so what they call this is the Epic rolling right experience and what they're saying here is it's that for Twilight Imperium it's in the same world as Twilight Imperium which to preface we have never played we do want to we do want to um it's just we don't have 12 hours in the day yet we've heard it's quite long and we don't have a group that was ready to play it yet anyways this is a roll and write version of that game very much condensed um it doesn't take that long it does take about I would say like an hour an hour to two no 90 minutes to 120 Minutes is what the box when just us play yeah it's usually like an hour but um yeah the more you add the longer it
takes essentially there's four different mini games going on and you've got yourself a special uh class that you're going to be part of so you're going to use your abilities to decide how you want to use those four mini games based on what the roles are and essentially once you've picked a mini game The Dice that are rolled are what you get to fill the minigame with and the fun part about this is you're going to be going through the whole combination check it progressively gets more and more great whereas the early game is like very much oh I'm just setting up for things and the later games like oh I get to do this this this and it feels very very fantastic the other part about this game is there is some sort of like council meeting that goes on where you can influence which way you want the vote to go and when you do vote for those things you can get yourself special benefits and give like disadvantages to other players which is a lot of fun and it just builds up to be this very well epic role and ride experience yeah there's a lot of layers in this game there's cards flipping there's I believe there's a battle mechanic because there is which makes it really fun because you're trying to work and build up comparative to everybody else so and each of the mini games has its own little flavors while that corresponds thematically which I really like but as you flip the cards as you roll the dice as you layer everything together it just comes
together really beautifully yes um the one thing I don't love is the orange chalk dye the markers yeah the transferability I felt like this it does look very very crisp very crisp but but if they dry out like you can't really replace it with anything else I know like I'm scared that as it continues I'll be one of those things that's not replaceable yeah so that's true I'm sure they're out there but um it is like different from all the other like dry erase that we so that is a good point it is a very fun game uh and I do love the abilities to like decide which uh like I guess Planet you're gonna be uh and then you or class however it is um race that's the word I'm looking for uh uh and then yeah like Elia said it's like you have to build your Fleet uh explore the world and do a bunch of these other like fun things and it's just really cool when the combos really kick off in this game gumballs and that is Twilight inscription so what I want to talk about next is Joan of Arc Orleans draw and right so this was designed by a writer stockhausen and Ryan Hendrickson and is published by Capstone games and essentially it's a re-implementation of Orleans in a drawn rate the reason it's called a drawn right is because you'll have a bag and you'll draw tokens from it and you'll take turns drafting the tolkens and they're the workers based on what you want to do uh if you have played early ons there's a lot of uh
but if you have not essentially what you'll do is you'll use your citizens to do various actions you'll acquire new abilities but and try to generate the most points by exploring this map section by acquiring Resources by acquiring knowledge by doing various things which I think is a really theme in a lot of the games that we've had there's multiple strategies that you can take in order to win the game but what I really like is the variation with the card so in the beginning you can just play with the set that comes on your sheets but later on you can actually have cards laid out and if you take one no one else can take and that's the same with the sheet as well but it's nice to have the cards yes yeah and they correspond to different abilities that you can take and based on the workers that you take it can do more you can travel more you get more resources to really cater your strategies to try to outsmart your opponents I also really like the way the scoring is done in this game because basically you're trying to get these little people symbols yes and then you're also trying to find different cities as as well or different places and fill up your board like if you collect all the goods and all that yeah so there's a lot of waste but it's like a fun little multiplication where you're trying to do a little bit of everything in order to really maximize your points and it's really fun now it is a race to get those citizens because it's super important when it does come to that multiplier like I said before it's a node to orions that they do a really good job at but it is important that you are aware of them that you are going for them because it will make your game that much more successful whether
that be keeping up with your opponent or like uh spreading that lead so you can claim victory kind of thing victory victory and that's China mark so the last game on our 10 new game Stars list is Motor City so this was designed by Adam Hill Ben pinchback and Matt riddle and it's published by Motor City GameWorks in partnership with 25th Century games and this is the third game in the loaded rolling dice series following Fleet device game and three sisters and in this game what you're doing is you're essentially supporting Motorworks yeah you're operating yeah you're operating you're engineering trying to build some strategy for cars like blueprints or whatever not how do you however you make cars uh they're testing them you're testing them you're taking them around the tracks you're putting them in production making sure the production is nice and clean and concise yeah and of course you're selling them because you gotta get them out there in the front be like look at this brand new car do you want this card give me your dollar I'll sell you this car exactly so Motor City is very well designed there's a lot I love about it the intersection between the different departments the way that the dice the the choosing of the dice the bonus actions from the spaces that you choose coffee break the coffee break for the auditor because you know sometimes you just need to audit some of
the different sections but this really encapsulates a lot of what uh the designers have done in their previous games the combinations the relationships between all the little mini games or mini sections of departments uh and it's just such a joy to play I certainly can't wait to play it more because Tyler's been beating me a lot in this game and I'm not makes me feel sad I really like this one but I want to get to it yeah I particularly like the speedometer and how you like progress through the game because if you get it really early on it's extra points for you at the end and those can be super super valuable but it's also hard to do moving speedometer up is pretty hard to do it's crucial to your game because you do will score for every single round yeah uh but yeah it's uh it's definitely important and I would highly recommend trying to get those when you can if you're playing it but it's a lot of fun and my favorite again like Elia said is they all kind of connect together and they bounce off of one of each other and it's just it's a great race great race they've done it again and that is well those are the 10 new rolling rights that we wanted to talk about today we're really excited to share them with you I feel like all 10 of them have been really fantastic which one's your favorite it's tough it's tough but I have to say dice kingdoms of valyria out of those ten it's it's either that or Motor City
okay yeah yeah I it's really hard for me to choose yeah they're great I think because there's a lot of I really like take a seat for its kind of like Innovation I like Twilight description because you play with eight different people yeah and it becomes this like it's pretty heavy Monster uh the Simplicity of explorers the love for the loaded Dyson Roll Of Motor City Nostalgia retrograde uh surprising impact surprising impact Avengers the pow pow the innovation of the distant sense of the yes it's hard to choose and don't forget get on board that one's chaotic and I love it did we just solve them um yeah it's pretty tough too and don't work yeah Joan of Arc is like a stand on its own like I think it's fantastic I think if I had to choose off the top of my head I would pick Motor City because I just love I love everything that publisher the designers do because I feel like they just know Roland rights they do a very good job almost flawlessly in my opinion they're they're very well done and I really appreciate them for it um but if you've played any of these and you want to talk more about them you can hop on over to our Discord we're happy to chat about it or you can leave a comment down below telling us how you felt about any of them maybe giving us some recommendations for Roland rights that we maybe have not tried yet um like we said is we are huge fans of Roland rights we did a month with over 50 games where they were just about
rolling rights and we did 10 before and 10 now so this is over 70 rolling rates that we've covered uh but if there's any that you enjoy tell us about them your question of the day talk Roland rights to us uh if there's ones in the past that we've covered that you want to be like I just can't stop playing this one because it's so good me neither let's talk about them together and I'm sure eventually we'll do a re-roll for our top ten so let us know if that's something you want to see and maybe we'll make it more of a prior or if you don't want to see it you want to be like I don't want to see that ever that's true that's true we'll still probably do it yeah
