Description

GAME SYSTEM

This entry is to allow for discussion/rating of the game system as a whole. It is not for a specific product or release. Versions will appear on the individual item pages.

From the official website: In the Magic game, you play the role of a planeswalker—a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers for glory, knowledge, and conquest. Your deck of cards represents all the weapons in your arsenal. It contains the spells you know and the creatures you can summon to fight for you.

This is the grandfather of the collectible card game (or CCG) genre. Cards are categorized as common, uncommon, rare, and mythic rare. Players collect cards and build decks out of their collection.

Players build a deck of cards and duel against an opponent's deck. Players are wizards attempting to reduce their opponent's life total to zero. The first player to reduce his opponent's life to zero (or meet another set win condition) wins the game.

An important part of the game is deck construction, which is done prior to the actual game by selecting what cards are included in a particular deck. There are over 25,000 different cards from which to build your deck!

Cards can be lands, which usually generate mana of various colors, or spells, which require a certain amount of mana to be used. Some cards (creatures, artifacts, and enchantments) stay on the board and continue to affect the game, while others have a one-time effect.

Players randomly draw spells to see what they get and can play each turn. Although this limits your choices, there is a lot of strategy in how you play those spells. A robust list of game mechanics, including intricate rules for reactive card play called "the stack," provide for rich tactics and tough choices each turn.

Though traditionally a two-player duel, there are several casual and tournament formats to Magic that allow more players to play.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I'm actually going to be doing a little bit of rulebook work for Wizards of the Coast, which is quite exciting, but it meant I had to go back and play Magic the Gathering, which still has exactly the same problems as it did back then.
  • It's my number one favorite game and I don't get a chance to play it. So, I'm doing a solo playthrough of Mage Knight on Thursday the 3rd of July, which is my actual birthday.
  • And then on Friday, we are having a Games Workshop themed day. We are playing a fourplayer game of Forbidden Stars in the afternoon. And then to end the week, we are doing the thing which I said would never happen. I'm going to be playing Talisman.
  • Nanolith. It's a cyberpunk themed cooperative narrative driven adventure game, I think, from what I know about it.
  • The funny story about this is Dirt and Dust is being published by Albi. Albby are a Czech publisher, and they they've done a number of other games in the past. Last year, they did Tea Garden for one of them. And guess who works in the marketing department at Albi? It's Peta himself.
  • Now, it's a Euro game. So, don't let the fact that it's Dungeons and Dragons put you off. It is a Euro style game. It is very much a Euro style game, but it has the D and D Baldersgate theme.
  • I'm super excited about next week. You can't imagine just my my joy at at taking a week off work and getting to play games which I really want to play.
  • The patron support is fantastic. But if you want to support me, you are you are more than welcome.

  • I will lose myself in the paragraph and feel like, oh this is like a good snippet from some ancient tale or something written in the 50s or whatever, you know, and or the 1800s.
  • Rangers of Shadow Deep, which has been like my number one game for the last couple of top 50s that I did.
  • it's a solo co-op miniature skirmish game that has a really vast expansive narrative campaign.
  • It gives me that D&D sort of taste cuz it's a D20 system and it's very like miniature scape world building type of thing.
  • it's just great. It's it gives you the chance to just play with all of your toys and play with all of your your terrain and your models and your your creative thinking, your world building cuz you can still kind of be a game master for yourself because the the game lays out like a narrative thing and then there's some like deck of card things that sort of change up the scenarios if you play them more than once. And so there is sort of a game master there, but the game master's kind of like left the table by the time you get there. They're gone. They gave you the outline and then you're there to kind of game master and play at the same time.

  • Origin Story is a competitive trick-taking game where you build your own superhero through five chapters of play.

  • If you're the kind of player that wants to be the problem, that wants to rush out to the to the races, I think Stompy is a great strategy for you.
  • It's really exciting. You get to play some of the most powerful creatures in the game, and you know that at least when you died, you lived.
  • Yeah. To your fullest.
  • Uh, cuz that also is a very clear strategy. When you have a bunch of stuff on the board, surely I can win.
  • It's terrifying.
  • Sapperlings are very unique to Magic and have a a silly little sort of quirky vibe to them.
  • Who doesn't love a dog cat?
  • Yeah. So, your dogs make cats, your cats make dog, and then Ren and Siri rewards you for having both by killing things and giving you life gain.
  • Yeah. So, it's got cards, mana, all the threat in a single card.
  • And it's an elder demon with really cool art. So, you get that whole sort of gothic horror theme to it as well.
  • The card that is meant for you will find its way to you somehow.
  • I was playing a dear friend Craig Blanchett and he busted out his Kia deck which was very tuned and very scary.
  • And I was just like, 'Oh my gosh, what did you just do? What is happening? Why is that A8 flying and killing me right now?'
  • So, for me, very complicated commander to play.
  • I was only I only thought of it as like a ghost quarter, like a way to remove a land. I didn't think of it as like remove all the lands.
  • But commander was a great place for us to all to come together and I found out about that because of this channel.
  • I decided that I just wanted it to make zombie tokens so I cut everything that didn't make a zombie token so I could just like don't have to have a two dozen kinds of tokens for this.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The cover and the title of the game are more important than the gameplay.
  • The powers are very different though. Like in Rebel Princess, it's all about shot and fraud, throwing another princess under the bus because that's what Hearts like thrives on, right? ... But for a bidding game, you you can't do that at all because it's bidding is so difficult in itself.
  • All the princess powers are more about uh information, sharing information, and gaining information. So that way you can make more accurate bids.
  • If you don't use your princess power in zombie princess, you get uh you get points. You get something.
  • We wanted all the princesses to have weapons. And that is still my favorite day that I've ever worked for Bez was our pitch meeting where like I think Cinderella should have pumpkin bombs.
  • The hook is the meta aspect of the game, right?
  • People love a game so much that they want to include it no matter what, even if it doesn't do anything for their strategy.
  • I love collusion. this that that is controversial. I think that would be that's a little divisive. Some people hate that. But I love kind of like going against the you know king making or at least tearing down the king.
  • The dopamine hits of that game are pretty fun. It's like, 'Oh, I can do this and this and this and this and this.' So it's Comboastic.
  • It's gorgeous. It's gorgeous. Like, there are games where you open up and you're like, did I really get my money's worth? ... You just see it. You're like, 'Yeah, I got my money's worth. This game is gorgeous.'
  • Everyone has like this little action board with like these little check marks and you take a little check mark and you stick it in that little recessed area. ... But then you're going to pass that around the table and then someone to your left will give you theirs and then you'll take another action. But you can't take the action that they took. You'll have to take another action. You do take the action that they took, but you have to pay them money to do it.
  • I think that saying that these are bad games or not games in a way like you're we're putting a gate where you don't really need one because at ultimately at the end of the day we want more gamers. We want more people in this board game cafes. We want more people showing up to game nights. We want to because we want more people to game with.
  • It is lighter than Sweetlands um, but more complicated than Oia.
  • The last place gets a whole bunch of debt, which is negative victory points. Uh, which is brutal in a two-player game because it's either you win or you lose, right?

  • Cloudspire is one of those games that I would absolutely love to play more of and there are plans for a rematch between me and JP on my birthday week in July.
  • The Graft is one of the new factions that just came out and it doesn't have a fortress. What it does is it has one piece on the board which moves around and that is their fortress. So, it's actually a mobile piece and it's big amoeba type thing.
  • That's that's nonsense. Um where things like saving the game, the math, the upkeep is made trivial by the video.
  • I have Frostpunk the board game. I have Frostpunk the computer game. They're the same game, but they are entirely different experiences.
  • As much as I love Agemonia, it's a 30-minute setup each time we play because we're having to get all of these things out and these things and these things and these things. And that's just the nature of the game.
  • No.
  • Give me a good Uwe Rosenberg game, Feast for Odin. Feast for Odin solo, I love it. It's a beat your own score game, but I I love it.
  • The reason why it was a bad experience for me is the solo mode for Perseverance is a very good solo mode at recreating what another player would do, but it was so far beyond my comfort level I really struggled.
  • My favorite game in that category is probably either Tower Up or Ingenious. I might have to give it to Ingenious just because of my personal story with that game and the fact that I can play it with Vicky and her family and things like that.

  • I can't review a prototype. So, no, I don't have the time.
  • It's not normally the math I'm concerned about because the the the arithmetic is not that complicated. I think it is the a a heavy rules dense euro game tends to be harder to reconstitute the abstractness into concrete thoughts.
  • I'm looking to buy an unmatched game, but I don't have much funds to buy multiples. If I had to invest in just one, which one would you recommend?

  • I don't watch playthroughs cuz playthroughs tend to be too long.
  • I think it's just the hype and how much money this project's making and all this buzz around it was making me think I should get on this now, and I just know that I'm going to get the cards, maybe play it twice, and then never play it again.
  • If it can fit in this 4x4 Kallax, then it will stay. If it doesn't fit, then something's got to go.
  • Will I still enjoy the game after 10 plays? It's not a question I ask myself.

  • If you're regular to the channel, don't worry that I've done a Magic the Gathering and a Monopoly video on the same day.
  • This is my one Magic the Gathering video a year.
  • I don't know how I'd be able to write on those to make that neat, but I'll find a way of doing it.
  • So, this is a standard card. It has a border and it has a text box. This is extended art because the art extends to the end of the card. There's no border on the card and there's still a text box. You can see with nothing behind it. This is full art because you can see that it extends all the way around and you can see the art behind the text box. And this, I believe, is called borderless because there is no text box or box around the text box.
  • So, that is the one that is in the pre-release. So, not really too fussed about having that cuz I've already I'm going to get the the commander not the pre-release, sorry, the commander deck.
  • I really like this card.
  • This was probably the best one.
  • I'm thinking at the moment any card that I don't have planned for any Commander decks and any card that I've got multiples of I definitely don't need. I think I'm going to try and sell them as soon as possible while the prices are high.
  • So, that is my experience with Marvel Heroes. That is my one Magic the Gathering video done for the year.

Quotes (from this video)
  • the sense of mastery and experience in this game pursuing that path in the game is really satisfying.
  • that is really, really satisfying in this game to have this mind game of what is my opponent going to play right now and what is best for me sometimes even like regardless of what my opponent does.
  • this leads to so many interesting mind games in Mindbug because when you play a card, I'm deciding, 'Okay, is this the time early in the game, late in the game?' Based on the creature that you're playing, based on the game state, is this the time that I steal it that I take your card away and that I take it for myself?
  • So, the great tension in the game even early on when if I push out a little bit ahead in combat or I push out a little bit ahead in the ring, suddenly I'm putting a lot of tension on the other player to either outrace me in one of the other categories or try to pull back.
  • I love the Star Wars the Deck Building game, and I highly recommend it if you love head-to-head dueling games.

  • Um and I think it's either got to be lots of cards to explore or something kind of yeah with that classic feel.

  • But at the same time it's given me the perspective to see the level of depth that games can have competitive to what it what you get on that first impression.
  • Gloomhaven is really the only board game that I have played consistently for a long period of time with the same people or same person or whatever um at a table, right?
  • It's like a lesson in you can't have your cake and eat it, too.
  • Like you kind of have to pick your lane and just commit to it at different points in your life. Otherwise, you're going to feel like you're not fully experiencing either lane to its fullest, you know?
  • I've had games that I've thought at times like this could be a lifestyle game, so I'm not going to play it yet because if I do, I'm going to get so into it that it's going to prevent me from getting to those other games that are should be a higher priority for me right now.
