Description

Splendor is a game of chip-collecting and card development. Players are merchants of the Renaissance trying to buy gem mines, means of transportation, shops—all in order to acquire the most prestige points. If you're wealthy enough, you might even receive a visit from a noble at some point, which of course will further increase your prestige.

On your turn, you may (1) collect chips (gems), or (2) buy and build a card, or (3) reserve one card. If you collect chips, you take either three different kinds of chips or two chips of the same kind. If you buy a card, you pay its price in chips and add it to your playing area. To reserve a card—in order to make sure you get it, or, why not, your opponents don't get it—you place it in front of you face down for later building; this costs you a round, but you also get gold in the form of a joker chip, which you can use as any gem.

All of the cards you buy increase your wealth as they give you a permanent gem bonus for later buys; some of the cards also give you prestige points. In order to win the game, you must reach 15 prestige points before your opponents do.

Quotes (from this video)
  • eight of these 10 games I purchased myself uh they weren't provided to me by Publishers one was from a publisher to the other was um a gift from a friend
  • over 50 percent of these games are two player only games
  • 50 of these are existing IP um sort of expansion sequels two-player versions alternate versions of just long-standing Top Flight IP in the board board game IP
  • the industry caught up to what the innovators were doing and also very much hired them all like a lot of those folks that have been doing these things have been rolled up into these organizations
  • the narrative is like pretty benign or benign but is that what I want to say just basic for like on you know plain maybe is the right way to say it but I really enjoyed the integration of the puzzle the progress through was like the best of that series
  • so this to me was one of the titles that was the epitome of seeing the sort of dinosaur organizations come back and look at what was happening in Kickstarter and modern Innovative game design and implement it right
  • now at number two is Splendor duel
  • Splendor tool at dual has like very similar grid very similar refill of that grid the distinction is more that each player the how they end their turn doesn't literally impact the other player which is true in sobeck but basically as things get removed from the board it forces the other player to make different and tough decisions
  • I really think these two are tied I guess if anything Splendor duel is like slightly faster to set up and with the removal of like a lot of the extra like so back two players has just more little rules and powers in a way that I mean Splendor 2 dual has some Powers but like just one same fun but one notch easier just to like explain and teach and start new with new players
  • both these games I'd be happy to play again and again and again and I have played them again and again
  • coming in at number one for 2022 is uh Clinic Legacy
  • I mean I think it's normally I think it might be on the top 10 in BGG normally ranked as like one two or three best ever Legacy game and fully and completely delivered really fun and exciting to be able to play through an entire Legacy experience with my family and my kids
  • haven't been able have done lots of Legacy in adult groups but being able to like keep my 15 and 12 year old engaged enough to go through it was really exciting
  • I'm Blown Away by it
  • the hardest thing to find here would probably be tooth and Claw though I believe you can buy it and maybe crash an octopus
  • I don't think you're gonna have a hard time finding any of the other things

Quotes (from this video)
  • Ask a Board Gamer! My first question actually launches with a tragic story - i've got bad news for you Brent - i've got some bad news for you - i got bad news - Uh-oh - A fire has destroyed your entire board game collection - new stuff included - Oh no! - i know! - Oh sh*t - And you have to rebuild - i wanna know: what's the first thing you rebuild with?
  • I would start with Splendor - Dragon Strike - Citadels - Hansa Teutonica - Mysterium - Boss Monster - Kingdom Death: Monster, hands down - 1313 Dead End Drive!
  • I love it so much! I've never won a game - I have a massive amount of fun.
  • It was the first real unique board game I owned.
  • D6 is basically designed for individuals who don't know how to play Dungeons & Dragons, but it's a really simplified D&D board game version.
  • It was like mousetrap almost. You build up this elaborate scene and you trigger traps and devices... Clue to the next level!
  • I probably would start off with Scythe. I've spent so much money buying all the expansions. I've spent a ton of time going over strategy, playing with other people, teaching other people. It's a long game to get to learn if you've ever played it. I just have to get that one back.
  • It is by far the best game that I have ever played. I absolutely love cooperative gameplay.
  • I don't really like counter-operative gameplay, even though I know that nobody else ever calls it that.
  • I tried Munchkin once, and I don't want to lose my friends over a game.
  • Cosmic Encounter you want to avoid, and of course, uh, Monopoly, because everybody should avoid it at all costs.
  • Kingdom Death: Monster is probably one of the most critically acclaimed and, like, artistically inspired.
  • When you look at the miniatures and you look at the details, the time and the effort and the inspiration that goes into it is very very nice.
  • Can you still get it? - Yes, you can! They do a lot of limited print collectors models of sorts. Those are irreplaceable.
  • I don't know how I'm gonna put my kid through college since I have to buy it all again!
  • There's been a fire, and it's destroyed your entire board game collection. What game do you buy first to replenish it? - Dinosaur World.

Pros
  • Absolutely loved it
  • Much better than the original Splendor
  • Crunchy and strategic
  • Great for tournaments
  • Lots of ways to win
Cons
  • Requires picking up the physical copy to do a video review.
Thematic elements
  • Collecting gems and cards to gain points and complete objectives.
Comparison games
  • Splendor
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Drafting — you pick gems from a grid.
  • Grid Movement/Action Selection — the way you pick the gems is neat because it's like this grid and you can only pick gems like in a straight line.
  • Resource Management — you collect gems and you get cards and the cards allow you to buy gems cheaper.
  • Set Collection — The cards have these like little crowns and once you get to three crowns you can take one of like I think they were called merchants in the original and you get those and those give you abilities.
  • variable scoring — the way that you win the game is not just points so you get to what is it 20 points and then you just win the game or if you have 10 points points in a particular color so you know you have black red green blue and white cards and if you have 10 points like in one color then that's a way to win and then the other way to win is you have a certain number of the uh the crowns.

  • I don't have a website anymore.
  • The reason for that is basically three reasons the main reason is it was kind of a waste of money because like nobody go went to it really.
  • I really can't figure out how much I really like it cuz it's actually relatively complex in the rule sense although like your game turn is is not very complex.
  • it feels sort of like somehow artificially complex or artificially difficult because once you can kind of sit there and sort of piece out you know the optimiz optimized strategy to do the game is relatively easy I have not lost any of the three games that I've played.
  • my group though is like pretty lukewarm on this one.
  • Long story short did not like it do not like this expansion I don't think that I ever want to play with it again.
  • man this game is boring.
  • this there's to me it's way way way better than even the original Splender which I did enjoy and I I probably would still enjoy it if I played it now but Splender duel holy cow this game is lots of fun.
  • the Dune Imperium app and I I know I've talked a ton about Dune Imperium everybody knows about Dune Imperium but I want to say the app is phenomenal the app is fanastic.
  • my number one game was Ultima Online my number two was Fallout 3.
  • The Ys games are the same universe they will reference each other although it doesn't there's not really you know if you play East 2 and then east3 and then east four the story itself doesn't like necessarily go in a lineary order.
  • I don't like any what what's the deal why do people like these Final Fantasy games so.
  • I really really like it.
  • this is the best combat turn-based thing it's just like a playing a tabletop Skirmish game and it's fantastic I really really like it.
