Description

The end is coming and greatest warriors are standing to fight. To die in glory and reach Valhalla.

Valhalla is a card game with dice placement mechanics. Each player takes role of a Jarl who builds a team of warriors and equips them to fight. In battles player roll dice to activate warriors and play special tactic cards. The winning party sends their activated warriors to Valhalla, and whoever has the most points at the end, wins the game.

The game puts a classical "war game" concept on its head. In Valhalla the goal is to win a battle and send winning warriors to Valhalla.

Custom dice add randomness and excitement to the game, and wide variety of Jarls, warriors and battle tactics ensure great replayability.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • action selection — On your turn, you're going to be taking a look at the cards you have in your hand and deciding on what you want to do. You can play up to two actions on your turn.
  • attack — And then, of course, the final option is to attack. You can do one of two of those or you can do two of one of those.
  • Card game — this is a card game where a lot of the fighting you're doing is going to be done through the cards but carried out on this map.
  • character abilities — Every character has their own deck of cards. Uh the cards are going to be somewhat similar, but I think you're going to find a lot of flavor if you're familiar with the characters that kind of goes and makes sense with the characters.
  • combos — They're going to synergize together in certain ways. They're going to synergize with your characters powers. They're going to synergize with potentially your weapon powers. And you're going to find those combos.
  • damage system — The first damage puts this damage token on its yellow side on you. The second one puts the red side. The next one is going to take you out.
  • Deck Building — Each character has their own deck of cards. Uh your deck's comprised of 20 cards. You're going to have values one to five and four of each.
  • Hand Management — At the heart of this game is card management. If you end your turn with no cards, especially during uh due to the fact that David gets two actions, if this is his first attack and I commit all of my cards to defending against his first attack and have none left, I'm giving him a free hit with his second attack.
  • Knockback — The heavy attacks are going to knock your opponent out. So, they're not necessarily going to do damage, but they'll knock them back a certain number of spaces.
  • Movement — The actions are to move. You could also delay, which is kind of it gives you some options, but if you don't want to spend a card to move, you can delay. your guy will fall down one space if they're in the air, but then you can do things like draw two cards or swap your weapons, things like that.
  • Multiplayer — And it's also a 2v2 game. You can have even a freeforall if you have three or four players and you just want to go last person standing. You can play it that way too.
  • Platform Fighter — It is a platform fighter. So, you have these fighters on these platforms. you're knocking each other off, potentially doing damage that way.
  • Player Elimination — If you take two damage in this game, the first damage puts this damage token on its yellow side on you. The second one puts the red side. The next one is going to take you out.
  • Push Your Luck — It's not a push your luck exactly but there is almost that feel of like that tension of is this where I do I want to commit a ton of cards to winning this fight.
  • Respawns — You're going to get multiple lives. So in what they call like the quick game we played where we get two lives. There's a mode where you get three lives. Every time you die, you kind of respawn and you get to choose where you respawn.
  • Weapon Abilities — Every weapon has abilities. Every character has a double-sided weapon card. And this is again the weapons they use in the game. Whenever you pick up your weapon, you get to decide which version of your weapon you're going to do.
  • Weapon Collection — You have to collect your weapons off the ground, and that's the same in this. At the very beginning of the game, you're going to have to grab your weapon before you even start fighting.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It is a platform fighter.
  • It's a very fast-paced game. The turns are very snappy.
  • So, it's a little bit of a combination like tactical combat out here and then card play in front of you.
  • At the heart of this game is card management.
  • This is way more of a tactical game than a strategic game because when when you're looking at these cards in your hand, you're saying, 'How can I make the most of this?'
