Classic Card Games and Huddle
Mitchell, it's a Tuesday, and yet we are talking to each other. Good to see you. Good to see you, too. And and we are talking to each other on Positively Board Gaming, our lovely podcast that we host together, talking about our lives, board games, how they intertwine, sometimes food, actually a lot of food.
Let's let you talk about a lot of food. You know what? It's mostly You know what? We're transitioning into a food podcast, and I think that's okay. Uh and but you know, people can relate to the foods we talk about, and that's That's a good thing. We talk about treats that we love. So, how are This episode 56 or 57?
57, and >> Good lord. Good lord. And we are uh I guess whoever If you're listening to this, you're listening to it on a Thursday. We usually record on a Friday. Today is a Tuesday, cuz we're going to record an extra episode this week. I'm always excited to chat with Mitchell, so Happy to >> excited to chat with you, too.
I feel like we're crazy people. It's like It's like when you do something that's unusual, that's out of your routine, and something feels a little odd, but a little wonderful at the same time. Like, "Ooh, it's naughty. We shouldn't be recording on a Tuesday. We're bad boys. We're the bad boys of board gaming." There we go.
Take a bad boy pose. THERE WE GO. >> [laughter] >> OH, SPEAKING of food, uh do you have any treats you want to share because I have something I want to share with you, but I want you to go first. I have a little one. People who listen to my live cast for a long time might know that I really like deviled eggs.
And I often [clears throat] I have a an egg person at my farmers market that I go to. Nine times out of 10, I get chicken eggs from this person. Um and I've deviled every other egg that she's had. I've deviled quail eggs, duck eggs, uh goose eggs. Um and this time this week, she had guinea fowl eggs.
And so, I deviled guinea fowl eggs, and they were delightful. They're just slightly smaller than chicken eggs. It's pretty much the same thing. Like, all these eggs end up tasting pretty much the same. >> going to say, can you taste any variation? I mean, is there any difference in the taste whatsoever?
It's very minor. The only difference that I can tell, other than the slightly smaller size, is that they have a slightly bigger yolk uh than uh than a chicken egg. So, In terms of like the relationship from the yolk to the white, so the relation Oh, so the ratio is a little in the yolk's favor. Exactly.
Exactly. >> Okay. All right. That's good. I I'm changing the uh intensity of my microphone here. Uh just changing the levels a little bit. Um yeah, that's really That's really interesting. I've never I I first of all, I love deviled eggs. I don't have them often, but when I do, [clears throat] I enjoy them very much.
There are and our our friend's mom, who has since passed away, which is very sad, she had this recipe for deviled eggs. And about several months after the passing, we were talking about her. I was like, "Listen, I don't need to be insensitive, but please tell me someone got that deviled egg recipe." I need to know.
And she was laughing cuz she knew that we all loved the you know, the recipe. She was like, "Yeah, we have the recipe." And yeah, that's something just delightful about them, and it's not something I would normally enjoy, but I love them. I love them, too. So, that's great. Have you have you had a food treat, a culinary treat recently?
I don't know why you'd ask me, considering I told you I might have a treat. That's really Thank you for asking me, Jamie. So, I went to the ballgame last night. I went to my my beloved Mets, my poor teams. My poor teams is all I can say. I went to see the Mets against the Dodgers, of course, the best team in baseball, has been the best team in baseball for the last several years.
And I realized I've known this for a while, I think. Um Baseball for me is more of a social experience than a sporting experience. It's just the nature of the game. It's always been that way. I think when you go to a baseball game, yes, you're going to watch your favorite team, and especially fun if they're good, uh like the Dodgers are, so the fans are obviously very engaged, but it's also a very social experience.
You're sitting next to people. You're passing food. You're passing money. Well, not as much money now. People just have their phone on there, but um and it's just very It's a very relaxed and enjoyable social experience, aside from the fact that you're watching an actual sporting event. And there are certain foods that are associated with said Yeah.
sporting experience, and that's usually a ballpark hot dog. A little disappointing this time, but the french fries were on point. And the the star of the show, Jamie, Dodgers ballpark peanuts in the shell. And and again, talk about feeling naughty. At a baseball At most sporting events, when they give you shelled peanuts, you are encouraged to eat them and then drop the shells on the floor.
That's what you do. But again, it feels wrong. Everything, you know, you're you're know, your parents told you you're on clean up yourself, don't drop stuff on the floor. That's the antithesis of that. You eat it, then you throw on the floor and go, >> [laughter] >> "Hi, peanut shells for everyone." And then you're walking and crunching on them.
People are like, "Haha, you So, the star of the show, I filled myself up on peanuts. I may not go to the bathroom for a month, but let me tell you something, it was worth [laughter] it. It was like, "TMI on Positively Board Gaming." Well, peanuts are binding, just like rice is binding for all of you who are having stomach issues.
Peanuts and rice tend to be binding. Uh yeah, we we're here to help you medically, as well. So, yeah, that was my uh That was my treat, Jamie. Ballpark Dodger shelled peanuts, roasted salted peanuts. Oh my god, so good. So good. That does sound like a good time. Well, I have one other little treat for you, Mitchell, cuz I am revealing something tomorrow, but you get to see stuff early because we're showing this until a couple weeks, but I wanted to reveal to you the new Fins Man expansion.
We're in the future now, if you're watching this, so you already know that it's about coral reefs, but uh >> I love the box, too. Yeah. It has some fish on the sides. So, what do we have here? I don't know the names of any of these fish. They're somewhere in the expansion, but it is largely a more Well, I actually The designers wouldn't say it's a more stuff expansion, but it really is.
There's a much more fish prints in it. And then it has these coral tokens. It's a big box for a reason. I I wanted it to uh to be able to fit the um a pretty big organizer tray in it so that this can go in the original Fins Man box along with the original tray, and that way you can fit a ton of stuff, hopefully future expansions, too, all into the two trays that are now in the game.
So, And for people who are listening, by the way, Jamie just showed me this beautiful box. It's a big and it's different than a typical board game box, which has a a cover that goes on. This is like a hinged box that folds in like a FedEx box, almost. And it's got beautiful artwork, shark blue background.
It's just It's beautiful and has a beautiful insert that has obviously the new cards, but as Jamie said, a lot of room for more stuff, which we all love. When we look at stuff, it's like it's it's not It's not enough that we're getting more stuff right now. I'm looking at the Fins Man Sharks and Reefs box, which is more stuff, but it also has room for more more stuff, which is just like, "Woohoo, your head explodes." That's awesome, Jamie.
Yeah. >> And there's something very I I like that the satisfying heft of that box. It's not a typical It's not a typical box lid box. I just like that it's a rugged, you know, again, you could take it with you and fight off a beat a shark over the head with it if you had to. That's beautiful. I love that.
And it is it is even though it looks we put effort into making it look good, it is designed to be recycled because it's designed to so you can put everything into your core core game box. So, Oh, I'm keeping that box, just so you know. I mean, I'm keeping it. Just cuz it looks rugged and I want to put stuff in it.
Yeah. That's great. Yeah. That's what I'm That's what I'm going to do. Yeah. I'm going to keep it. >> [laughter] >> Like a crazy person. Um Can I transition into something that I think we both have in common right now? >> Of course. I sent Jamie a text of this. So, we Jamie and I both got our copies of Crit and Trick.
Stupid microphone's always in the way. There we go. >> Um this this this game, and it's a it's a D&D inspired trick-taking game with dice rolling, characters, typical, you know, rogue like the typical D&D characters, but trick-taking with dice rolling and and a D&D element. This is like my jam. This is my jam.
Um and the and you can't see, obviously, if you're listening to us, but it comes in a beautiful, almost like a giant tome, like a giant book. I love games that come in a box that look like a giant I You know what I mean? I'm a sucker for this, Jamie. And it has a magnetic insert for the cover that I think lets you switch over from Crit and Trick to this beautiful artwork, where it looks like a maybe a paladin and a wizard on the back.
It looks so good. I I was able to actually Did you try changing the insert the other way? >> pop it off. Yeah. You flip it up. It's so cool. And again, I'm a sucker for this. And it came Let me tell you how disturbed I am, as if you don't already know, Jamie. We've been friends for a while. You've been working with me for a while.
It has beautiful dice in there. It has all the dice for each character in there, all ready for each class. I think it's What is it? Four sets of dice that are in there? Beautiful colored dice. Yeah. Being me, I was like, "Hmm, I wonder what other dice I could put in there." >> [laughter] >> So, I was looking through all my dice, and I found some other like bursty colors that I put in there.
I was like, "You know what? The designer made these beautiful dice that are already gorgeous that are in there, and I had to go and one-up and put some other dice that are in there. But just know that when you get this, if you have if you have pledged this um this crowdfunding campaign, it is a gorgeous game.
It looks beautiful. I'm so excited. Have you played it yet, Jamie? I have I still have I've not played my copy. I've played the the original. I played a copy that looks like this, but it wasn't final. I'm so excited to play my copy. I Just to let everyone know real quick, the the mechanism that really hooked me, you roll these dice that Mitchell's talking about, these D&D style dice.
Like, it ranges from a D20 down to a D4. You roll them behind your screen, and then you essentially play a fairly normal trick-taking game, where you play a card. The twist is that the card doesn't have a number on it. So, you need to assign one of your dice to that card, so it has a number. So, you can play like a like a 20 of hearts, or whatever the suits are in this game.
And the additional twist to that is, if you want to play, say, your D20 on that card, and you really you only you only rolled a two on the D20, but you you know, there's so many numbers higher than two in a D20, you can choose, at that moment when you play the card, to roll the D20 at that moment. So, not only do you have the information from what when you rolled all the dice, but you have a random chance that a choice, a random choice to randomize that number as you play the card, and it makes for some really exciting moments in the game.
Oh, that is so cool. That is so smart. I love that. I'm excited about that. And yeah, that I love the fact that all everything you need, I think it's D4, D6, D8, D12. Maybe D10? >> D20 D10 D10 D10 and a D12. No, is it 10 10 and 12? 10 12 20, yeah, I think so. Yeah, 10 12 20, yeah. 4 6 8 10 12 20, exactly.
And then some dice also have a percentile dice, which is I think 10 to 100. Um but that's like sort of like a D10 anyway, you can multi-use that D10 for the same purpose. And some, you know, some people like having percentile dice too, they like to have extra. But I was so excited to get my copy, so excited.
Um Is there anything you'd like to talk about this week, Jamie? I I have a feeling there is, and I'd love to hear it. >> [laughter] >> How's that for an awkward segue? Pressure, awkward, everything any anything you want to call it, it was quite awkward and a little bullying, like, "Okay, Jamie, it was a nice way to bully.
What do you have to say? Go ahead, tell us, we want to hear." What do you have to say for yourself? >> What do you have to say to yourself, mister? >> [laughter] >> Well, I segue is actually pretty well from Crits and Tricks, designed by my origin story co-designer Pete Wissinger, um to my topic today, which is uh my top three favorite games that use a classic deck of playing cards.
Okay. >> Crits and Tricks doesn't quite do because there aren't numbers on the cards, but it is, you know, in the same area. Uh and so I am looking at primarily classic games for this list. But I did want to get a give a quick shout-out to a game that you and I both love, The Game. Oh, yeah. Uses a standard deck of cards with poker chips.
You can essentially play The Game or part of it with a standard deck of cards. And uh Regicide. Regicide is a cooperative game that uses a deck of cards. Okay. >> It's in buzz recently for the legacy version of the game, but even the normal version of of Regicide is just it's just a deck of cards that you're using for this co-op uh puzzle.
But the three games that I picked, my top three, and I'm very curious to hear your picks. I know you've played cards over the years, and you've talked about a few on the show. I think Sure. I think I know what you might say, but I I narrowed down my top three to uh number three, I'm going to say a game that has a couple different names.
We called it BS when we played it. Naughty, naughty. Yeah, I know. We were so naughty to play this [laughter] game called BS. It was a card I didn't know the term for it at the time, but it's a card-shedding game, where you're trying to get rid of all the cards in your hand. Right. >> And you play them face down in an escalating order.
So, if Mitchell plays two twos, I believe in BS, at least the way we played, you could you didn't have to like match that number of cards. I could say, "Okay, well, it's my turn. I have three fours." As long as the number is higher, you can play that. But I'm playing them face down, and so you don't you don't know if I actually have three fours there, and you can call BS on me, or uh and if you call BS and you're right, then I take the cards back.
I take all the cards in the stack, I believe. And if you're wrong, then you take all the cards in the stack. Mitchell, do you have Do you know this game? Do you have a different name? >> know this game. I think it's great fun. It to me, it's a card version of Liar's Dice a little bit. It has that It has a very similar Don't you think it has a similar vibe to Liar's Dice a little bit?
Um but yeah, this is a really fun game because and again, there are almost elements of Uno in that you think you're gone, you think you're done, and then oh my god, I have to eat all these cards because somebody called my bluff. And and I love that. That's really It's one of these it to me, this is a great version.
This is a great example of a non sort of in-your-face take that element, where it's more like, "Ah!" where everyone's like, "Oh, man, you got me." where as opposed to someone laying down a card that like ruins you for the next two rounds, and it's really that feels harsh. So, if you have someone that's not into take that elements of games, I think this is sort of a gateway card game into, "Okay, take that can be sort of fun and inviting." Does that make sense?
I think so. I think it's a gateway into like bluffing as well. Yes. Yeah, that was That was my number three. I put Hearts at number two. Oh. Hearts is a game I played this so I played it almost every day in college. We would play for like $5. We played $5 Hearts, and we just played it over and over again.
Um It's uh I guess it's been a been a while since I since I had played Hearts, but as I remember it, Yes. were you you were trying to avoid generally trying to avoid taking heart cards. Um and I think the Queen of Spades maybe is another card that you're trying to avoid. Yeah, basically every heart is worth a single point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.
The idea is to come away from this game with as few points as possible. You're trying to lay hearts and the Queen on people. Right. Or >> But yeah, I'll let you finish that one. >> shoot the moon. You can try to get all of those things. And it adds it it adds a really that element that tweak. I mean, that that is what makes because it makes all other players someone has to like kind of sacrifice.
They see one player going and trying to shoot the moon, someone has to say, "Okay, fine, I'll I'll take this hand of four hearts just so they can't shoot the moon cuz they get everyone everyone gets a bunch of points except for that player if they do it. I love the shoot the moon mechanism. I don't see it many times in modern tabletop games, but I think it's so clever.
I know. In other games, it's the equivalent of an instant win condition. Yes. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Uh you've played Hearts, yes? Uh yeah, a spoiler alert, this would be my number one. That's okay. Yeah, it's Hearts Hearts I played growing up at least once or twice a week for years. And it just brings me joy to think about it because it brings back a lot of memories from when I was a kid in New York, and the joy of this game, and it really teaches you a lot about, like you said, Jamie, about different elements in game It's a unique element in gaming.
And a lot of gamesmanship or gamespersonship. Um just, you know, learning how to sacrifice, how to how to strategize, and then, like you said, shooting the moon is like a it's a it's a big chance taking chances. So, there are like thing very much elements of games that I think are fun and important to learn as a gamer and sort of embrace.
So, I agree, this is just a brilliant simple but brilliant card game. Now, but I guess before I get to my number since you've revealed your number one, before I get to my number one, do you want to reveal maybe your number if you have a number three to mention? I'm putting you on the spot here. Mitchell didn't know that I was talking about this.
Uh >> [sighs and gasps] >> I have my number two. Mhm. What would my number three be? Um I played a lot of Rummy. Mhm. And even like the board game, like Rummy Cubes and different and Rummy was another really fun game for me growing up. Uh again, very competitive game, but also a very fun game, and it's more thinky than you would think because it's simplistic in its idea that you especially if it's seven card, you're looking for a run of three cards, run of four cards, or consecutive cards.
And it's simple, but there's a lot of strategy involved and a lot of taking cards just to avoid giving them to somebody else, another great gaming element. So, I think Rummy would be my number three, definitely. And I know what my number two is, so we're good. So. Okay. Yeah. My number one >> to hear your number one, yes.
Yeah, my number one is uh is poker. I like low I'll say low-stakes Texan Texas Hold'em poker. I would not want to be playing this game for thousands of dollars, but I think you I think you need a little bit of money. We played for $10. I think you need a little bit of it of money for it to be for the decisions that you make in poker to be meaningful.
Um at least that's how we played for many years and had a great time doing it. I I love the bluffing element of it. I love the feel I mean, the feel of looking at your random two cards. It it's something that I I don't think many games have captured, especially when you have a really good hand, or when you have a really bad hand and you decide to stay in, and you happen to hit something on the on the on the flop.
Um it has lots of little moments of of endorphins that that that can potentially kick in. And when you play for only $10, it doesn't feel that bad if you lose because maybe next week you'll win that $10 back. I love poker. I played it many, many times over the years. Before I hosted a game night, this I hosted hosted a weekly poker night, and we had a great time doing that.
So, yeah, poker is my number one, Mitchell. I I wish that I had had your group or you in my group when I was learning in my formative gaming years, learning poker and playing poker because my experience was I was playing with very competitive people, and it was it was less about the fun social experience and more about winning money.
And that sort of turned me off to it a little bit. Turned me off to playing with those groups. I think I'd be open more now to play a more fun game, but I think by nature, poker is a very competitive game. There's a lot of bluffing, and you have to have the right group. Um if you don't have the right group, like you said, it could be and for a lot of people, they love the list I have I want some money, and that's what it's about, and this guy we're not going to bring him back because he doesn't So, I mean, it's it's so it's it it it wasn't as inviting to me, but I can see, especially especially with The Game, what a wonderful what a wonderful game it is and how much I enjoy it.
I just wish I'd had a better entry point and a better group to introduce me to it. It sounds like I'm shaming my group. I'm not, it just wasn't a good mix for me. Right. For a lot of people, I think it would have been a good mix. For me, it wasn't cuz I just wanted to have fun and sit down and have fun.
And for some people, for a lot of people who play poker, it's like, "Oh, no, no, we're here it's competitive, we're we're here to win. Bring your money cuz we want to take it." And >> [laughter] >> it depends It really depends on the group, but it is a wonderful, wonderful game. Yeah. And I'd love to play with you sometime cuz I'm sure it would be a completely different experience.
That would be great. What's your number two, then? I'm very curious. I I have a guess, but I yeah, what what is it? >> your guess would be correct. What is your guess? My guess is Bridge. Yes, it is. Okay. Okay. I I just stopped you. I was like, "Ding ding ding ding ding [laughter] ding." It's really like it did the ding ding dings, so attractive.
Yeah, it's bridge. It's um Bridge is a wonderful game. If you've never played Bridge, it's worth looking online, getting a quick tutorial, getting the basics down. It's such an interesting interesting game. Probably probably the ultimate trick-taking game. I don't the king daddy of trick-taking games.
We were playing with four people most of the time. And you are bidding. There's a bidding system at the beginning based on your hand. How many, you know, what what, you know, how many tricks you're going to win, what you're going to do during that round of the game. And you are bidding is not just telling the table what you think you're going to do.
It's also giving your partner, cuz you play in partner with partners, it's giving your partner a clue without being directly able to communicate. There are a lot of gaming elements in Bridge that are really, you know, that really translate well to tabletop. You know, you're trying to communicate something to your partner without saying what you have.
Your bid will let them know. And then as it goes around the table, your bid may completely change to a different suit, cuz it's based on the suits, you know, the typical spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds. And because you change your bid, that lets your partner know, oh, okay, they have they're kind of strong in this, stronger in this.
And so you're trying to complement your partner and let them know what you how you can help them and vice versa. Then when you win, your partner goes away and you're playing as the dummy, you know, it's it's crazy. It's crazy. >> [laughter] >> So I mean there's I mean there's so much going on in Bridge with communication and just the idea of like secret I I think it's a lot of great strategies again that translate really well into traditional tabletop gaming.
I'm glad you picked a partnership game, cuz I think that there's a whole genre of you know, partnership games that use a standard deck of cards. Yeah, Mitchell, thanks for I'm putting you on the spot here, but thanks for sharing your favorites. And I look forward in the comments of hearing someone else's favorite game that uses favorite I'll we'll say favorite classic card game that uses a standard deck of playing cards.
Love that. Love that. I wish I had like I like where did I find this? I don't know if these are Aven- oh, this is like Avengers deck of cards that I found probably at PAX. And you know, with the little foil stuff inside. I always, you know, I love I love collecting things. But if I see nice dice or a nice deck of cards, there's always like we like you said, there's always use for a deck of cards.
Yeah. You can play anything. There's so many different games to play. So I encourage you as a gamer, if you don't have a couple of decks of cards as part of your arsenal and for board game night, there's so many different options. And we never think of cards necessarily when it comes to game night. So sometimes it's a great alternative as a filler or just instead of a traditional board game, as Jamie said, one of these card games would really be entertaining and fun.
New stuff to learn is always fun. Yeah. So what's on what's on your mind today, Mitchell? Oh. >> [laughter] >> Dramatic sipping pause. >> [laughter] >> I did that purposely. I was like, I'm not selling my I'm not conver- Why am I being such a brat today? What'd you call me sassy McSasserpants last time?
That's right. That's right. Yeah. It made me love you so much more. I don't know what's I don't know what to say, Jamie. It's all I can say. [laughter] You're the best. Um I like to every once in a while follow up on a game that I was excited about getting, excited about trying, and then getting it to the table and sharing my experience a little bit.
So in the in the spirit of how much time do we have here? We have a few minutes. I can I can I have like 5 minutes to talk. In the spirit of Jamie's series of videos that he calls my favorite mechanism, Mhm. I I can't call it that because it's, you know, it's Jamie's thing. Even as the king of Stonemaier, I don't feel right taking over that name.
So I do have I'm a I'm a benevolent king is what I'm trying to tell you. Okay. Jamie's like, you are not the king. Please stop saying that. You are not the king. But it's fun. The crown prince of Stonemaier. >> [laughter] >> I wanted to talk about my experience with Huddle, the fantasy football game.
Because my buddies Jack and Jack and Eric came over and all three of us are big fantasy football guys. And they came over to play Descent: Legends of the Dark, the the second campaign, the second box, the expansion. I I understand they're not making a third. Let's not go there. Jamie already hurt me once.
We don't have to do that again. So no, maybe you know what? Knowing that made us embrace and enjoy the time that we're having even more because enjoy what there is, right? So we and I said, "Listen, before we play this, let's throw a new game in. And let's try Huddle the board game, the fantasy football board game.
And one of my favorite things about the game is as advertised, how brilliantly it evokes those feelings of being in a fantasy football league. I couldn't believe how much and I as I'm saying it I'm like I'm getting like the the goosebumps because I haven't I I was in a league for almost 30 25 to 30 straight years and then stopped.
So part of me doesn't miss it. I like being able to watch a football game relaxed and not worrying about oh, I hope that kicker kicks two more field goals while my running back still goes and scores. I hope my team wins, but if they lose to another player that I have then it's okay. It was craziness.
Yeah. So getting and jonesing for that feeling a little bit and then having this board game really evoke those feelings of being cuz there's a draft mode where you're drafting your players and you're sitting there and you're basically it's card-based. So you have, you know, you have the the bunch of players out, the the you know, you're you're going shopping basically.
It's the market phase for lack of a better term and you're picking your players. And the players all have a star ranking. So obviously you have a bunch of chips that you have at the beginning of the game and you only have certain so many chips. I think it's 20 chips you start with and you have to use those chips to fill your roster.
I think it's a quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, flex, flex which can be tight end, quarterback, running back. Quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and then a kicker and a defensive team. And then you have two bench spots. So during the draft phase, you have to fill all these spots.
And it's really like I said, going through that draft, I felt like I was doing fantasy football again. And there's, you know, it's it's not real players. They have imaginary names, which is which is fun and smart because then they don't have to pay licensing for NFL players, which can be cost prohibitive to say the least.
NFL is one of the biggest businesses in the world. So you have your team and you have your team of players and they are all on imaginary teams. They're on Dallas, New York, San Francisco, all the regular cities that So you then have cards that you that you get like at the beginning of a round, it'll be a team card that is either a positive or negative effect.
All you guys who have team players that are on Miami, reduce one die cuz all the stars they have that are on their card, the more stars they have, those are all dice that you can roll when you're getting their stats for that week. More the more stars, the more dice. However, there there cards that will mitigate how many stars a card has.
The Miami team bus they all you know, crashed and minus one die for any Miami player that you happen to have. Or so-and-so sits this week because he didn't show up to practice. So again, it's like you get this news and you have to rearrange your team. The game does such a wonderful job. They couldn't have done better to make it feel like a fantasy football game.
And that was so exciting because to me that was the main draw. Jamie, I know you played fantasy football. Was that like a one-time thing or have you played over the years at different times? I've been doing fantasy baseball for a long time, but this past season was when I did that guillotine league that I really enjoyed.
So I'll be back this season to do another one of those. Yeah. You should also I'd like to hear what if you ever like try to regular fantasy football league, it'll be a slightly different experience than you're having. Still wonderful, but just a little different. I'd love to hear if you ever do that.
You Or we could do that. We could join like a Yahoo league and just, you know, you can jump into any free online league and it's just low maintenance fun. We should try that sometime. We'll talk We'll talk off the air. But it it really it was wonderful. Um For people that don't like luck, Mhm. there's a lot of luck involved because you're rolling basically once you have your players, you're rolling dice for that position based on the number of dice that player has taking into account what the, you know, good or bad news you got from the team.
You'll also get a player card that you can also play that will maybe inhibit other people from using certain dice or certain cards. And you could play them at certain times. Like, "Oh, I'm sorry, you can't roll that player now. He's got to Oh, no." So yeah, but there is a lot of luck involved. Sometimes you'll only have three dice roll for a player, but you'll get three sixes and they'll be 18.
You'll be like, "Woohoo!" It's almost like that that player that you didn't expect to have a great week had a great week. Yeah. So yeah, I was very very very happy about that. And it like I said, it gave me it gave me a lot of good feelings. We're going to go back to it this week. There's some there's some minor things that we house ruled a little bit cuz we weren't sure on the rules a little bit.
Okay. But that that could have been an us thing, so I'm not even worried about that. But in terms of giving the giving the feels of a fantasy football game, so so so on the money. So thank you for making that game, everyone over I think they change it. They were originally called Huddle. That I mean that's the but I think they changed I have to check and see the name.
But fantastic job on creating a game that really evokes that feeling of fantasy football. So yeah, that was really cool. That's awesome. I'm glad you had a lot of fun with it. And just out of curiosity, was is it a standalone session game or are you continuing something the next time you play, you're continuing something from the previous game?
That's a great that's a great question. So basically, you know what? I'm glad you said this. This is a really good point. So basically, each game session is simulating a season of fantasy football. Mhm. You can play a shorter one, which we did, which was three rounds. So basically three three games and, you know, three three three weeks of a season and whoever had the most wins at the end of that season was the winner.
Normally, you'd play a longer game. And here I was saying, well, you know, it can be very it can be very swayy based on the dice rolls. But obviously, the longer your season is, that will naturally mitigate the the luck element because you'll have more weeks to get better rolls and have better players and to get wins and losses.
So, forget what I said about worrying about mitigating because of the But then again, Jamie, I didn't play all I didn't see all the cards. There could be some cards that you pick up that will mitigate the dice that you use, maybe let you turn over a die. I don't know. Um so, yeah. Yeah. Uh we we played a three-week season, but you could play a nine-week season.
You could do whatever you want. You could do you can go hog wild and play a 17-week season and it goes pretty quickly. Once the draft is over, it goes pretty quickly. It's uh it's one of those games that that hits you hard and hits you fast and you you can make it last as long as you want. So, it's really cool.
That's awesome. I'm glad you had fun with Huddle. Me, too. It's a heavy game. It's a heavy game. It's not a big box, but it's heavy. I wasn't sure if I should lift it with my back and everything. I was like, I think this is about the limit of what I should be lifting right now cuz it has great poker chips in it.
Really nice hefty poker chips that you use, not the lightweight ones. It was great. It was awesome. That's really cool. I guess I know it's a very niche topic, but if anyone has a favorite sports simulation game, feel free to mention that in the comments today along with your favorite classic card game.
Love to hear about it. Yeah, and if you had any any food at a ballpark that brought you joy. You know what? I'm I'm I was sort of like half joking, but ballparks have become like for foodies. It's really become a foodie heaven because they have so many choices and some of the older ballparks like Dodger Stadium, which is so if you've never seen a game at Dodger Stadium, it's wonderful.
Even as a Mets fan, as a New York fan, I can acknowledge it's beautiful there. But they're always upping their game in terms of food. If you're a foodie, no matter if you're vegetarian, vegan, regular regular foods that you just eat all the time, you can eat anything, it doesn't matter. I say regular like it's not even a >> [laughter] >> Vegan, vegetarian.
I mean like a regular person. I'm shaming vegans and vegetarians. I didn't mean it that way, but if you could just eat normal regular food that no one that anyone else might not want to eat, but you could eat everything. If you're an What do we call them? Everything eaters? Um I'm a vorce, I think. Oh, is it a vorce?
Yeah, carnivore would only >> Wild crazy eaters. I don't know. Yeah. I'm a vorce. Yeah. I didn't mean to say it's like regular. You're not regular. You are regular if you're vegan or vegetarian. Here I am like shaming people. That's terrible. No, but yeah, there there's some basically something for everyone.
And I think Dodger Stadium is starting to catch up in terms of food. So, man, uh I I can only I can only do so much cuz I have to get home and I don't want to have to start the Once I start the timer, once I consume something, I'm like, "Okay, I've got about a half an hour [laughter] before I have to get home." It's not attractive.
Just like saying regular is regular. That's not nice. Uh so, there we go, Jamie. I've shamed myself and everyone else. Thank you so much. Ending on a strong note as always, Mitchell. It's good to talk with you. You as well. I hope people see that in the comments, yeah. Well, take care. I'll see you in a few days for uh episode 58.
>> [laughter] >> Bye.
