Description

Description from the publisher:

Horrific monsters and spectral presences lurk in manors, crypts, schools, monasteries, and derelict buildings near Arkham, Massachusetts. Some spin dark conspiracies while others wait for hapless victims to devour or drive insane. It’s up to a handful of brave investigators to explore these cursed places and uncover the truth about the living nightmares within.

Designed by Corey Konieczka, Mansions of Madness is a macabre game of horror, insanity, and mystery for two to five players. Each game takes place within a pre-designed story that provides players with a unique map and several combinations of plot threads. These threads affect the monsters that investigators may encounter, the clues they need to find, and which climactic story ending they will ultimately experience. One player takes on the role of the keeper, controlling the monsters and other malicious powers within the story. The other players take on the roles of investigators, searching for answers while struggling to survive with their minds intact.

Do you dare enter the Mansions of Madness?

Quotes (from this video)
  • we've been trying to save it for the yeah the Mythos phase where normally you know bad things can happen then and we've been very fortunate the last two Mythos phas nothing's happened so it has been kind of wasted but I know personally I prefer not to use it if we have the option to use a token I'd rather use it when we roll and we don't have the option to use tokens and we really need that extra success
  • speak these words words for great power
  • The Wither spell and at what cost we don't know but this is a ranged spell attack with a damage of two and Min up to this point hasn't had a weapon so this could prove quite useful
  • This is the craziest kitchen I've ever been in by Thunder I've got to get out of here
  • it's going to take more than a few Whispers drifting down the hall to unsettle him

  • I want to say thanks to drown metal for contributing to this episode drown has been around since the very beginning when we did the Mansions of Madness videos and I'm glad you stuck around
  • I don't know maybe the 720p resolution is going to be a bit of a curse for me cuz you guys are catching everything
  • well it's not a problem what they say in the game is you only have to lay tiles on the exposed edges of the dire chamber entrance so if there's no room then you don't have to lay a tile there it just means you'll have a smaller chamber
  • I couldn't find a rule that specifically addressed it but in my opinion this is not an unexposed edge until a hero gets over there and opens the door so if you know otherwise or have a rules reference that you can point me to please write in the comments and I'll update that in the next video
  • the items have different things on them for instance like this one here says you use it during your hero phase and that doesn't take up a move or attack action
  • I almost feel like I'm I don't even want to play with these anymore when I saw I just want to Turf them no it was wicked really nice paint job
  • I'm sure of it okay so next what happens just gained five um so now it's so since it's already on a tile with a hero it's just going to do two damage to this
  • I'm sorry am I boring you here no I'm a little tired okay end of a long week at school I understand okay
  • thanks for tuning in and uh next time you see Andrea the hiccups will be gone hopefully

Quotes (from this video)
  • And in this way, we hope that you'll be able to really determine whether or not a game would be right for you, for your family, or your gaming group.
  • So, I had to put Mansions of Madness away, Arkham Horror, all those games.
  • Preferably. Um, you don't like hit points things.
  • So, I don't mind games with strategy, but I don't mind games that leave a lot up to luck either.
  • So, I'm really interested in showing this. It's very different than the other kind of games we've played.
  • So, in What's My Word, each player gets one of these game books, and they use these to record and conceal their game word that the other player is going to be trying to guess.
  • Now, although your secret game word is concealed, you really don't want your opponent to see any of the information that you're writing down.
  • So, in the first round, purple always goes first.
  • Now zero points is not good for a score, but it does give me some useful information.
  • So now when I'm trying to think up new words for future guesses, I can easily see what letters can and cannot be in certain positions.
  • So, you could potentially, if you got all the letters right, earn 6,000 points.
  • But the important thing to remember is you don't have to guess the final word to win.
  • So post what you think I should guess in the YouTube comments.
  • Wow.
  • Thanks for seeing Christie on her first and last episode of Watch It Played.

Quotes (from this video)
  • mechanisms over theme for the win
  • Stories can be great the first time around but I think atmosphere is way more important
  • I like feeling immersed in the aesthetic and setting of a game
  • if you can get someone invested in the story of what they're doing I have seen time and time again how that can increase their capacity to learn the rules because now they have a sense of motivation
  • for me if a board game tries too hard to tell me a specific story it takes away from my experience
  • I like ludo-narrative Harmony when mechanics match story and it's great when the story Jump Start strategy
  • Ludo stands for play and narrative so it's where those two things meet
  • if the story is poorly written poorly read or it was just more story than what the players were looking for it's not going to work
  • English isn't my native language and others around me aren't very fluent in English and reading well
  • one thing I expected with Rodney standing next to those shelves of coin games was for him to take one out and talk about how games can retell stories
  • if some players really want to embrace the story of a game while others aren't in the mood for elaborate theatrics or dramatic readings those story elements they just they won't land
  • I'm glad there's a wide spectrum of games to choose from so that everyone can find something that provides enjoyment for them and the other players that they game with

  • If you had to live in a board game, which board game would you live in?
  • I think probably one of my favorites is hidden orders.
  • Well, first of all, I'm just you know, I'm thrilled to have an outlet for a certain amount of creative energy that has found um a modest, but enthusiastic audience.
  • So, I think I guess my my advice would be keep it simple at first, and find out whether or not you find the work satisfying.
  • Well, my wife is no idiot.
  • And the most important thing I think you can do is to know that game inside and out.
  • All right, I'll give you four. Antoine Bauza, Stefan Feld, Vlaada Chvátil, and Isaac Vega.

  • I hope you check that out also I'm still working on the behind the scenes video and the map perk for the kids um I always try to make an emphasis on working on the gameplay videos and getting those out on a regular basis so I have to work on those other little projects squeezed in whatever free time I can find so I just want to reassure you those things are still being worked on and they absolutely will be released
  • I'm also really excited because I'm now registered for Gen Con 2012 a friend of mine is coming with me I've never been to any gaming convention before in my life and this is the biggest board gaming convention that I know of in North America so it's probably going to just blow my mind trying to navigate that area
  • I asked people to submit some ideas for Logos I got a few and one of them I liked as soon as I saw it um this is a logo by Yan Ponte sorry if I'm mispronouncing your name but let me tell you something I really appreciate the work you put into this in particular some of the meaning that was put into this logo is really neat
  • I'm going to show you that in a second but I wanted to say listen I understand change can be met with some resistance I'm sure I'm sure some of you won't like the logo um I'm sorry for that you can't please everyone all the time I hope it doesn't take away too much from your enjoyment of the series but I hope and I believe that many of you you will like it
  • I wanted to find something that was unique special hopefully would be meaningful to people especially people have been watching watching our series for a long time and then I I got this idea and once I had it man it was stuck in my head I could not do it
  • So if you've watched our series uh from the beginning uh then you'll remember that we did a playthrough of mansions of Madness and one of the most memorable characters at least for me and I think for a lot of you was our Harvey Walters character
  • I don't know about you guys but I cannot imagine what would be scarier to a mansion full of cultists than this Army of Harvey that I have in front of me
  • but no one should ever feel like that's the the focus of the show I mean we want to just keep having fun playing games with you guys and we appreciate that you guys want us to be able to keep doing that

  • I consider myself a board game media junkie anytime I have spare time I'm usually watching a video review or a walkth through or I am listening to a podcast
  • he does such a wonderful job of presenting how a game works in his video he couples that with excellent video work and then all the editing that goes into that I just it's it takes a lot of time and effort he does them so well it just I always walk away understanding how the game works
  • there's nothing pushy about it I always walk away knowing exactly what he thinks about the game and I never feel like um he's closed the door on on what I should think about the game either
  • basically on the board game geek forums there is a a section that's that's dedicated to the geek of the week and they give a thread each week to a new board game geek member well not not necessar a new member but to a different one each week
  • the first serious game that I remember playing oddly enough was a war game actually which surprises me because I don't really have war games in my collection today
  • I think I must have somewhere along the line Associated what I perceived to be all this incredible fun tied into these very thick complex rules
  • the Box said something like um you know would take you 2 hours to 2 months to play depending on what you played
  • I came to realize that I'm not going to be able to teach this game anyone who's going to want to play it with me
  • I wonder if that's part of why I get so much meaningful satisfaction out of making these videos I do about teaching games some of them complex and feeling um connected to the other people that I'm you know through online teaching these games too
  • This was it for me um when I saw this game on Board Game Geek I got excited because there was the complexity yes there was the complexity there but all of these components and were really goodlooking and and dripping with theme
  • I mean this is this is what I was looking for if you will this was the The Thing I needed to get me back and interested in this hobby really full force
  • I didn't really realize that games like this existed and that got me going to board game geek all the time
  • I really enjoyed watching his videos and it was very inspiring to me it made me think this this is what I would want to do
  • I have this I I say it's almost an irrational aversion to giving my opinion about games over the Internet because I never mind it when anyone else does it like that's that's great I don't always agree with all the opinions I hear but I enjoy hearing other Gamers opinions about games but I think on a personal level so I'm not critiquing anyone else who does this but just on a personal level I struggle with the idea if I tell someone A Game's really great and they go and buy it and they hate it I'm going to feel like I cause them to waste money
  • This was it I was now getting to play games outside the four walls of my own home with other people they were continuing to play with me and they seem to be enjoying it and I was really enjoying it
  • what surprised me believe me it was a surprise was that other people seemed to enjoy watching along with us
  • I think that's one of the one of the things that really got on to me early was instead of having just inviting a few people to join us invite everyone to join in people can leave their comments and vote for what ideas they want best that way everyone can feel like they're contributing to the gameplay
  • really we just wanted to complement the other great review videos that we were enjoying ourselves
  • it's really helped shape me as a gamer it's helped me evolve and and it's certainly made my enjoyment of this hobby all all the more meaningful
  • that's really the big part of this hobby that I enjoy the most is that interaction
  • thanks Joel thanks for this opportunity to be the geek of the week it's just another extension of being able to reach out to more Gamers and and meet them and and share that passion for this hobby

  • basically the reason why we don't do kickstarters as a general rule here on watch it played is because uh the games themselves may not fund

  • I don't think it can be questioned that Tom Vassel has, you know, an unrivaled work ethic as it relates to creating content for board game media.
  • If you'd like to meet the real Harvey Walters, you can do so at that convention.
  • And no, this is not actually a game. It's it's a film. It's a documentary by Douglas Morse.
  • I viewed Randall with a certain amount of self-righteous disdain if not Randall specifically and certainly his approach because to me it seemed like here's somebody who thinks they have the next great American game and obviously didn't care enough to learn anything about our gaming community to see what's been going on what kind of mechanics are popular in games.

  • character abilities — Harvey's ability allows him to give a clue token to a character within range as an action, once per round. Pros
  • App-driven management reduces setup and bookkeeping dramatically across platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac).
  • Smooth UI with clear labeling; unobtrusive interface that integrates narration and flavor text well.
  • Excellent sound design, narration, and contextual flavor that heighten immersion.
  • Puzzles are quick to set up and easily randomized; map variation supports replayability.
  • Four scenarios offer thematic variety; expansions and paid digital scenarios add long-term value.
  • Investigators are distinct with interesting starting distributions and scenario-driven goals.
  • Insanity mechanics add memorable tension and player interaction/role-playing moments.
Cons
  • Menu and end-of-game prompts can be easy to misinterpret, risking accidental game termination without undo.
  • Monster stands and physical minis can be fiddly; storage and stand durability are concerns.
  • Physical component storage is not well organized; home storage solution can be pricey or cumbersome.
  • Solo play is notably harder; some Sandy/“insanity” elements are more punishing with fewer players.
  • Darkness and fire mechanics on the live map would benefit from clearer in-map cues.
  • Some players may find balance issues or randomness frustrating in lower player counts.
Thematic elements
  • Cosmic horror, mystery, and sanity under pressure
  • Lovecraftian investigations across cities, graveyards, docks and mansions
  • Narrative-driven with app-managed state, prompts, and flavor text
Comparison games

Quotes (from this video)
  • Las Vegas is probably my top one, and it's just everyone's involved.
  • New York Slice is one that I really like—the I split you choose thing; it's just simple rules but I really dig that.
  • Skull and Cockroach Poker are two really great bluffing games.
  • This is like my sweet spot—these are the games that I love to introduce to new people.
  • I love board games because they allow me to have incredible social experiences with friends.
  • The biggest barrier to board games being huge is just that so many people won't play them.
