Description

Maria is a game based on the War of the Austrian Succession, between 1740 and 1748, where Austria was attacked by Prussia, France, Bavaria and Saxony, while only Great Britain, Hanover and the Netherlands (by forming the so-called Pragmatic Army) helped her.

Maria is primarily a 3 player game. One player is Austria, the second is France plus Bavaria, while the third player plays as Prussia (Austria's enemy) and the Pragmatic Army (Austria's ally) at the same time. This is made possible by the division of the map into two parts, the Flanders map and the Bohemia map.

Maria is derived from the award-winning Friedrich: Anniversary Edition, but has its very own character, including politics, hussars, force marches, imperial election, Saxony's betrayal and Prussia's annexation of Silesia. Subtle maneuvers, seizure of fortresses, prudent retreats, and Machiavellian politics are the keys to victory. However, players must be careful: whoever uses his Tactical Cards unwisely in battle can suddenly find himself not on the highway to glory but on the road to ruin.

Maria takes you to the era of the 18th century's ruthless struggle for power. It can be played in 2 variants: the shorter, simplified introductory game or the longer but richer advanced game, with its simultaneous campaigns in Bohemia and Flanders.

  • The passing mechanism. When a player passes around, each time it's their turn again, they receive a coin.
  • The real joy of this game comes down to building up a long series of buildings, then placing that residence and activating them all and getting all their resources.
  • The main goal of this game is, as I said, to be putting on the best show you can in your coliseum.
  • You only ever score your best show. If the points you get from your current show doesn't exceed your previous maximum point show, you don't score any more points.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I know the games I play. I know the games I love to play. And I know the games that I theoretically want to play but don't actually play.
  • I need at least one of those two things in play - either high personal interest or good reputation
  • Designers, reviewers, other people mentioned
  • I'm going to be trying to be more mindful about reality as opposed to the desires that I have
  • These tend to be less of a priority. Like occasionally I dive into an unplayed game that isn't a review copy, but more often than not if I'm diving into an unplayed game, review copies do take precedence
  • I have so many euros I love and so many that I'm behind on

  • This is highly subjective in general I award this to games that I find especially entertaining designed especially well or elegantly or view as a great overall package.
  • I don't rate games on this channel with a number I don't really like doing that; rating a game is more complex than slapping a number in front of it.
  • The definitive rating is how much I would recommend a game, and all games that award the Ace of Games too I would definitely 100% recommend.
  • these three seconds is games award if a game is exceptionally good in my opinion and that concludes today's video.
