How this game feels to play
Description

Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze, which is themed around the pulp adventures, tall tales, and local legends of the mid-20th century, gives you a whole new way to play Unmatched.

In the game, players work together to defeat one of two villains: Mothman or the Martian Invader. Each villain has a unique battlefield with unique objectives. If the villain completes their objective (or defeats the heroes), the players lose. The villains are aided by a number of possible minions: Jersey Devil, Ant Queen, Loveland Frog, The Blob, Tarantula, and Skunk Ape. The enemies use special action cards and a simple targeting scheme to control their movement and attacks.

The set comes with four new heroes: Nikola Tesla discharges his electrified coils to power up his effects; Annie Christmas gets stronger when she's fighting from behind; The Golden Bat, the world's first superhero, has a variety of powerful effects; and Dr. Jill Trent, Science Sleuth, calls on a collection of gizmos.

Keeping to the Unmatched brand, you may use heroes from other Unmatched sets in Unmatched Adventures, and you can use the included heroes and battlefields to play competitive Unmatched.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And if you're anything like me or us here at The Dice Tower, then you've got a lot of it and you are being swamped by these boxes taking up your shelves.
  • Now, these I will say right off the bat, they're not inexpensive.
  • If you really want to pack it in a little bit tighter, you can certainly do that as well.
  • This gets a big thumbs up from from me.
  • If you love love mixing and matching sets, you love that idea of the sort of anachronistic thing of I want to, you know, I want Daredevil to fight Bruce Lee because you see can now, um then this is really good cuz you're going to have a lot of those characters staring you in the face out of a single box or a couple of these boxes.

  • My rankum for you gentlemen is ficasha sourdough cornbread.
  • I love how you ranked your bread taste by how much stuff you could put on the bread, right? And then you got down to sour like nothing against it. I guess you can make a sandwich or something. And I'm like, I don't think this man likes bread. I think he likes toppings.
  • So, um, yeah, it's been doing really well for us. We announced recently that the next set coming out will be Battle of Legends Volume 3, which is the obviously the third in that line.
  • Are you familiar with any board game that has Samuel L. Jackson in it? I'll wait. I don't think so. I couldn't think of one.
  • It's funny, we when we designed it, we were our biggest fear was that we would have, you know, some failure issues with the tower, you know, something or they would break down, whatever it would be.
  • My favorite comment was, "Why is everything brown on this plate?"
  • I'll even offer up a a bedroom at Marty's or mine if you come to Tantrum Con because it's in Charlotte. Well, or just stay at the hotel. It's a lot easier.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And that's why dueling board games are just some of my favorite because they're just so replayable and they're really quick to reset.
  • This game takes the trophy, quite literally, for the best production value, hands down, out of all the games that you can see today.
  • I honestly thought it was sort of a gimmick where you just have a bunch of really nice production value, but in exchange you just roll dice and see whoever has the highest number wins.
  • Yes, when it comes to dueling board games, nothing checks every single box like Marvel Dice Throne does for me.
  • The game really encapsulates what it feels like to be that actual character.

  • If you don't know what Zenith is, give Zenith a try.
  • This is a toss-up. This is going to be a jump ball for sure.
  • If there's a game that I think more unanimously will get uh votes other than War of the Ring, it might be Star Wars Rebellion.

  • Splendor Duel is worth trying for sure.
  • It is such a great two-player game.
  • Fugitive is probably uh even more so than Pagan my pick for like two-player deduction

  • Make sure everyone has fun at the table
  • We are going to do a bracketed tournament for two player games culminating in not what I would say, it's not going to be the best two player game necessarily. It could be. It might be, but it's just going to be the winner of this tournament because we've done some randomization here with some of the games that we've matched up
  • You can fill out your own brackets, but you are also going to be picking the winners cuz we're going to be running polls on our Discord for each and every match up so that it's I mean, for lack of a better way of putting it, kind of a popularity contest each time.
  • I think Twilight Struggle was the game that popularized the two-player experience, at least as far as I'm concerned.
  • Oh, for a long time. Forever.
  • it is what a lot of people think of when you say when you say, 'Name a two-player game.' Lost Cities.
  • These These do have the the downside of being a little older games.
  • go to our Discord cuz as you're watching this right now, you can go to our Discord and go to the two-player March Madness channel on Discord. You'll be able to download the brackets. You'll be able to participate in all the polls that we're doing there.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Attacks and defenses without line-of-sight — Attack resolves via card values and defense cards; there is no traditional line-of-sight or ruler-based range—range is determined by zones.
  • Deck exhaustion with consequences — Your deck does not reshuffle when empty; instead you are out of cards for the rest of the game and drawing a card causes exhaustion damage.
  • Line of Sight — Attack resolves via card values and defense cards; there is no traditional line-of-sight or ruler-based range—range is determined by zones.
  • Movement via maneuver and boosts — Maneuver draws a card to your hand, then moves up to your move value; you can discard a card to add its boost to movement, at the cost of losing that card from your hand.
  • Scheme cards for positional and effect-based play — Scheme is the third action; scheme cards provide various actions that can shift momentum, creating strategic variety between fights.
  • Two-action turns (attack, maneuver, scheme) — Each turn you must perform two actions; actions include attacking or defending with cards, maneuvering to reposition, or playing a scheme card for an effect.
