Overall sentiment (raw)
positive
Pros
  • Easy to learn (played with an 8-year-old)
  • Interesting scoring mechanic based on neighbors
  • Plays lightning fast
  • Cooperative scoring element can be seen as strategic
Cons
  • The scoring wrinkle was confusing for one player initially.
Thematic elements
  • Ecosystem building
  • Pond
Comparison games
  • Kids Between Two Cities
  • Spades
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Card Drafting — you take a card from the river... I'm going to switch it for a card in my pond.
  • End-game scoring — your two left cards will score based on your left neighbor's pond. Your two right cards will score based on what's in your right neighbor's pond. The four in the middle will score based on what's in your tableau or your pond.
  • Set Collection — Every card in my own pond that has a blue background is worth five points. So technically if I could fill this up with blues, that'd be pretty powerful.
  • Tableau Building — each person collects eight cards in front of them in order to build a pond.
  • team play — There's also a team mode, but I haven't tried it yet. You play two versus two, and you team up with the one pond that's across from yours.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We're playing four games in a roundup with four dregs.
  • The goal of the game is to have the pond with the highest number of points.
  • If I had three curses at the end of my turn like this guy, I would sink.
  • You need to play sequentially. So, one, two, three.
  • So, couple things I really like about it and I'm pitching to Cara for this.

Pros
  • Neat little game
  • Easy to teach
  • Not fiddly
  • Stores in the box fine
  • Comes with a useful score pad
  • Stores nicely
  • Pretty cheap little card game
  • Takes up no space
Cons
  • Four player is not particularly useful
  • Best played as a free player game
Thematic elements
  • insects
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Set Collection — The way the scoring happens is that you effectively have your tableau split into three areas... score based on your tableau of cards... score based on the neighbor to your right's cards. These ones score based on the neighbor to your left.
  • Tableau Building — You'll be flipping these cards over and exchanging them in the middle until eventually you are going to have eight cards in front of you that have varying different colors, creatures, and scoring conditions.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Making it bigger doesn't make it clearer.
  • Can we maybe just calm down and think about some smaller games once in a while?
  • I think the small games dominated the UK Games Expo.
  • For me, it was all about trying to find a bunch of hidden gems.
  • It's just nice, simple, really cool little filler.
  • It's a really weird game, and I may not have explained it that well, but it's clever. It's interesting. It's something a little different.
  • This is the game that you teach people how to play trick taking games.
  • But man, you have got to be in sync with your opponent. When they play a card, you need to know why they've played it.
  • This was the highlight of my UK Games Expo, buying these games and finding that all these little games I bought for mostly dirt cheap could still give me as much, if not more enjoyment than these giant big box games that everybody jumps on the hype train about.
  • So, before you look at a massive game and decide, 'Oh, yeah, I must have this cuz everybody else says it's amazing.' ... Maybe consider wandering over to Hashet, All Play, or some of these other little indie publishers... and check out the small games because you might be surprised at what you find.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is probably the most I've seen for the merch line ever at Gen Con.
  • Gen Con brings in a lot this year, brought in 75,000 attendees. I think $82 million in local businesses for funds.
  • Lockwood's Asylum, a competitive survival horror deck building game.
  • And your goal is to be the last person standing.
  • The game makers here in full production. It's nice.
  • The scale of Battlefront is just so insane. I I I can't wrap my head around how crazy this Battlefront looks.
  • Flip Tunes 2. This is the only game that I looked up for Gen Con because I didn't make any lists.
  • This is the favorite thing that I saw for today and it was Lord of the Rings: King's Gambit.
  • I love the aspect of that you are trying to give that you're buying monsters to put into other players rooms, which I thought was really funny.
  • Symbiosis. Really love this game. It's a really great fit for my family on trips and everything cuz it's such so tiny and so easy to play.
  • The goal is to get that player to guess the secret word by collectively providing them with three clue words.
  • It's actually one of those games where it's a little bit better if things go off the rails.
  • What what I was really scared of is that a game like this can easily get frustrating if people are not along the same wavelength cuz it just invites that kind of frustration, right?
  • I would never play this game without hints.
