12 Days of Giveaways - Ep 14

0:09 thank you we've made it episode 14 of the 12 Days of Christmas collection giveaway I'm Mark Maya and this is board game coffee thank you thank you all right so we're 14 episodes in you guys definitely know the deal by now but let's run it through really quick across 24 episodes that are going to air over 12 days I'm gonna give you a tour through my entire board game collection and during those episodes I'm going to be giving away board games to help you build a collection of your very own we're going to be giving away anything anywhere from one to four games per episode and we're gonna air two episodes a day that's pretty good now remember you can enter in each video once so that's a lot of chances to win and there's no limit to how many games one person can win the winners will be announced at the end after all 24 episodes after the 12 days of run their course we're gonna have one live episode where we will announce the winners right here live in the studio Brittany will be on chat and either Jess or Chris will be pulling out the winners we'll we'll see how the schedule dictates who's going to be wearing the reindeer antlers and the last thing I'd like to dive into before we start looking at the collection is a reminder that this year is about giving or the season is about giving and as we

3:12 episodes it's all going to be on that one day we are not pulling any winners until all the videos are out which gives you two weeks to watch and enter ever all 24 videos which is a pretty good time span actually got a little more than two weeks I think you got a little no maybe two weeks you got two weeks two weeks okay now let's get into the collection I just hate the fact that people are trying to us it's very upsetting especially when they're asking for contact information and probably credit cards it's not nice it's not nice wrong okay anyways our first game in our collection that we're looking at today is set a watch this is the deluxe edition hey this was funny because I remember um bearded meeple gave us this is one of the ones he gave us that's right uh when he um when he left would he temporarily when his temporary Hiatus from board game reviewing and uh it was in he gave so many things was buried in a bag and then I remember looking at the kickstarter instead of watch came out and we had the bag for a while but we never got through it and I was like oh I want said why should I get it I was like I wanted me I'll think about it and then we were going through the back and I found set of watch Deluxe Edition in there and I was like where are we I was like we could have made a video and had some had something for the kickstarter but we totally missed it because he gave us so many things at once yeah and we're just we missed out we missed out but I never actually got the place to watch all right next what do we got what do we got we got a little thing um the thing the board game now this is like the second uh shot that somebody's done this because there's a white box version of the thing I think it's called

4:45 something else I can't remember it's like there's a there was another thing game that came out that I think people weren't too happy with and then this one came out I don't know if it was by the same publisher but uh I think this one was better received so this is the only one I've played and we I actually like this one you know it would be perfect to be helping me with this with this one in particular would be Jess because me you oh sorry me Brittany Jessica and Kayla we all played this and I was the alien right off the bat I was like oh I don't want to be the alien but I was like all right and then I I got Brittany I put I I poisoned Brittany and the thing is Jess and Caleb were like you're so the alien you're so the alien you're so the alien but I eventually got just to totally be on my team go against Brittany which was fine because only one of the aliens has to get away so I was Kayla flip something and it wasn't it was the 50 50. so she got the human part of you or whatever yeah she was like you're not the alien no Kayla I don't think I ever had convention he thought Jess was no Jess did that I knew Jesse I thought Jesse Jess was not an alien I was an alien I took Britney with me and that was it but uh no Kayla was never believed me but because Kayla never believed me and I swayed just to my side just started wondering if like maybe Kayla was infected she didn't know but she had to trust Kayla Kayla was pretty determined that I was the alien but I convinced Jess like you should have seen it it was Jess was upset I thought we lost for

6:18 sure just we did lose I know but I like you were correct oh that's true anyways we lost but by one turn I almost got in the helicopter but they got one extra turn because something didn't happen fast enough I was like and then they're like let's test Mark's blood I was like damn it they got me I'm an alien that was the last one and then they got on the plane they got on the helicopter and they were both human and they survived but by one turn I totally thought Jess is an alias yeah because I I love how just I swayed just to my side so hard like she was so convinced that I was human and that got her so upset she did she felt so betrayed that was awesome anyways uh we only played this one time but it was such a memorable play so I I really liked it uh a lot of the ladies didn't like it because they felt uncomfortable with the fact that somebody was just lying to them the whole time we have issues materials issues all right boss monster all right so now uh boss monster I I've played this quite a bit and uh this was before board game coffee and basically the premise of Boss monster if I'm remembering this correctly it's been years you're building a dungeon to lure Heroes into so and then you want to like kill the heroes in your dungeon so you're setting traps Etc and and that's how it goes I think you get points you you put in different rooms like every card is a different room and the heroes go from one room to the other and I believe that's I believe that's how it was I remember I actually kind of liked but

7:49 like I liked I remember liking boss monster although I don't think a lot of people shared my same like for it but I I enjoyed boss monster I did not enjoy the expansion but I did like this box the fact that I looked like a Game Boy game box that was awesome um but what was because this looks like a Nintendo box and this looks like a Game Boy box so that was very clever but this I can't remember what this did this added something to the game that I was like I dislike the expansion so if I play this again I am not playing with this anymore I don't remember what it did but I just remember telling myself I don't like the expansion but I do like this uh I actually have two copies of this because your brother gave me one for Christmas that's right and it's upstairs sure so that's that now before you give me that I want to mention something this sweater is so comfy now we actually got a bunch of clothing for promotion purposes so I just wanted to show you that's this one and but this isn't the video where we're promoting it I just wanted a sweater to wear for this episode it was brand new and I was like I'll put it on I was like it's it's like it

9:00 but not uncomfortable it's like very comfortable it's got a good stretch to it yeah and there's so many different patterns you can choose for these shirts and like the art is great for these but uh none of this is gonna count we have we have to do a promotion for one video and none of this counts right now so I'm just being honest with you this this is enough I hope you would be honest with you well I always well yeah I'll be honest with everyone too but I just like I put this on I was like I like this yeah you haven't stopped talking about it since you put it on yeah yeah yeah anyways so I'm wearing it's free promotions for them okay cat in the box so I saw why you give me the game Sorry Sorry I saw the cover of this and was like oh this isn't a game we played but then I looked at the back and I really like this game I actually remember playing it now you really like this I don't that's not the impression I got from you you like this I like this game interesting not that I don't like the game it was like you lost me the puzzle where you had to put the colors together to get the more points oh right yeah yeah yeah yeah I like that okay I didn't realize Britney enjoyed this game so much I thought you were just got a man on it I like that I only I don't have a strong opinion about it I just know my I was really hyped up about it because when I got this at Gen Con everybody's like oh cat in the box is amazing and I played it I was like it's okay it's okay but I didn't play it again but I'd play it again to give it a shot to give it a fair Shake I um like I didn't I didn't hate it I just thought it was all right but I'd like to play it again because I haven't played enough to really give a strong opinion either way I think I liked it okay yeah and you you maybe you did maybe you did I think I liked it

10:30 because I won it's a unique um it's a unique type of trick taking game because all the cards are black and you assign them colors and then there's this board I don't know if you can make that out here there's this board back here where you put your pieces to assign colors and you want to so you put like if you want to make your five yellow you put a token on there being like Oh five yellow and then you try to like make you try to connect them orthogonally so you get like bonus points based on that it's it's a very interesting mechanic I'll give it that it's a very interesting mechanic so I'll give it again I'll give it another go we'll give another go ah Rift force from Capstone now we did a playthrough for uh for this me and Jess I was gonna say I don't remember that at all yeah me and just do the playthroughs I uh check out the playthrough if you want to see me Crush Jess uh it was a great it was a great T so now in uh Rift Force like everybody like makes a team of like four Elementals I think we only played it a few times but you make a team of four and then each of them brings their own deck so basically if you pick like this Crystal element element Elemental you grab their deck and then you get the earth guy grab his deck and then you basically if I I believe I'm remembering this correctly and then you go head to head trying to I don't know if you're trying to take over areas or trying to I don't remember what you're trying to do in this oh I think there's different columns you stack in and you're trying to have more power in them maybe maybe whatever it is check out our playthrough

12:01 I really enjoyed Rift Force so it's it's a fun one but I can see I'd like is it for everybody I don't know I haven't played enough to say for sure I can tell you for sure that I enjoyed it um so check out our playthrough if you want to see more at a time so uh want to play for since we've got it yeah Disney villainous is beautiful looking that I've never played still got the tape on it still sealed but a lot of people play this and they love it I want to play this so bad but again it's just it's just time and then when you do have time when you have time to play it's like okay I can go learn something new what and I look around it's like and if this is not in my sight yeah all the games are happening like oh I'll learn now let's let's learn how to play true day because that's right there right so I'll learn how to play that and so I gotta have a list of like here's the game when we have free time here's the priority list of games we need to learn how to play and funny story about this is my niece who's like in her early 20s I went over to my sister's house where she still lives and walked in and there was a stack of board games the bottom one was Game of Life which is kind of what I expected but then after that it was like uh villainous Sagrada and I was like what what's going on here I was like who's whose games are these and they're like oh they're they're mine and my boyfriends you know and I was like what have you when did you like board games you guys play board games I was like how have you not told me this you have an uncle that has a board game

13:31 channel I've got tons of board games why aren't we playing board games yeah they live in a city that's like two hours away sure because I I'm originally from Toronto and I moved to London which is like two hours away so they still live in Toronto but we should bring some games out to play with them and force them to play with us but anyways the fan villainous and I was like I've always wanted to play villainous I was like show me how to play villainous like that now not now because yeah let's force me to do that yeah she can show us how to play villainous and they have villainous but you know what I did have on me because I brought a Zuul because I thought oh man I could teach my mom how to play Zool and my sister because it's kind of like you know uh tile based Sudoku I think your mom would really like I think she'd like it but thing is it's probably one of the few games I could teach my mother that's not language dependent yeah because there's no words on it I can teach her in Portuguese yeah and she can unders she can understand it so I just have to teach her the patterns I think she'd get it she likes puzzle games so anyways I had it with me and so I was like you know what I'm instead of you teaching me villainous my niece I'm talking to I'll teach you how to play Azul and then next time I see you uh you teach my buddy I taught her I taught her a place well she bought it did she buy it yep see Azul all the time but now she owes me she said she's gonna play buildings because well this looks awesome and now oh come here bring him bring it so Marvel villainous obviously I didn't even open that one but I was like I don't care how good this one is this one's better because like I gotta get it

15:02 I think I've mentioned a few episodes you slap a superhero license on it I'm getting it it's it's mine next what do we got we got boom oh this box is heavier than it looks eh it is yeah so I love the artwork and oath I bought this because uh I can't remember who was talking about I don't know if it was Jessie like quackalope Homer he was talking about it somebody's talking about it I was like you know what yeah I'll get oath because I was gonna pass up on her first but then I also passed up on root and root everybody loves rude rude as I exploded I was like oh man because I miss out on everdale everdale came out and it was it's something about Woodland creatures I'm like oh thanks I'll pass it's such a pretty game and I pass on it every dollar everybody's like everybody loves every day we got it now we got the all like that collectors the whole big collector's box we got it now but coming soon it's coming soon to a video to one of the videos and um so I missed out on that and uh and then yeah root came out missed out on that more Woodland creatures everybody loves it and then this comes out now I was like well I'm not missing out this time and uh I don't know I don't remember it's still in this package but it's heavy they're dense anyways so that's my story with oath Woodland creatures I don't want to miss out anymore because every time they come out I pass up and it's always a mistake what do we got now ah juicy fruits I feel like I have the Juicy Fruit song yeah I feel like when we start this game we need to have that yeah just have our repeat it has nothing to do with that no it doesn't so here's juicy fruits is the first time I saw this game I was

16:33 at Origins by myself I went solo and which was a terrible experience because I was sick like the entire time I was there like I had a migraine and it was just and thank goodness Alex it was terrible yeah Alex rewarding you coach saved my uh I thought I was gonna have to go to the hospital but he saved me the bagel yes he came over he probably brought me a bagel I was like I was I didn't have my migraine medication I suffered from really bad migraines so if anybody at other can sympathize I if I don't have my pills I can end up in the hospital and that's what happened anyways Alex thank you Alex uh anyways so juicy fruits here's my story it was like a board game night at the convention center and uh I walked in late to room I was supposed to be hanging out with Ryan from MBM and uh he's like you're coming I'm coming I was having a chat with gnarly Carly actually just that's that's where we met and I was hey we were talking and they were like okay well I gotta go and she's got to go so we split ways and I went to go see Ryan and I get there and he's they're finishing up a game of Juicy fruits and I was like what's that it's got a really chunky wooden fruit and I was like it looks very it's a very colorful looking game looks like a very simple game and they're playing and I was like that looks interesting like I was watching them the end of their game and I was like I'm I'm very intrigued by this game and then um so then I went to uh you know went to Capstone they hooked me up with a copy thank you very much guys and I finally got to because everybody was because it looks great got home

18:04 played it loved it freaking love this game I I was like Britney you got to play this uh Kayla you got to come over and play this Jess you got to come over and play this so I kept introducing people to play it now I don't know if you can make it out it's kind of like you know those puzzles where you have to move the squares but you could only go so far until you move other things out of the way but in this game because you have a board and it's got tiles all over it and you can move the tiles but you can only move them as far as they bump into another tile so you're sliding them across and when you slide across it's like there's like resources and stuff that you slide across and as you slide across those resources you get them now you have to do things to like unlock certain parts of your board so you can slide across more and get more resources yeah there's boats you can fill there's like little there's tokens that go all around your board that give you points for I can't exactly remember liking it yeah right away and then there's this whole like uh Juice Factory portion where you're moving this token you're moving these two tokens uh across this Juice Factory to get points so there's like I'm getting points here I'm getting points there there's these cards you can get that are like uh like vendor cards and there's like so many things in this or Defender cards or these vendor areas that I don't know if the vendor cards was the proper term um and then there's like these bigger buildings that you can put on your board that block up a chunk of your sliding movement but they're worth points so you have to be careful when you get them you don't want to get them too early uh because then you'll block up all your movement and what you can get so there's

19:34 so it's such a simple concept it plays easy but there's so much like involved strategy and thinking and it's so easy to get into and and it gets even better Morgan coffee seal of approval that's right I love this game juicy Foods I can't recommend juicy fruits enough it's great I think it's like a very underrated game I think people need to more people need to be talking about juicy fruits and there was something I wanted to mention in addition I was checking was like I wonder how much this game is because like it feels like it doesn't look like it looks great it's a colorful break game and I was like this doesn't look like it could cost too much and then I was like but it's got gameplay of a game that's it would be more expensive and I checked it out and I was like it's very affordable I can't remember what it was but it was like 401 games I checked it out and I was it was something like 30 or 40. I can't remember something like that yeah and I was like Canadian yeah Canadian uh but I was like that's so good actually even Canadian 401 prices is good globally like their prices are so good they beat a lot of this prices like their sticker price of 401 is cheaper than the sticker price in the States from a lot of the stores that I've gone to wow and that's Canadian dollar so it's even cheaper US dollar would go far yeah so if you any Americans visiting uh Canada if you're in Toronto go to 401 games it's great uh anyways I know they did not pay for that ad no I can't I can barely get them to talk to me okay uh I think it's because I don't live in the city anymore yeah that's just a genuine

21:06 thing you've been going to 401 games for yeah I've been going there for years so anyways uh yeah so it's it's affordable like the amount of game you get for the cost is the cost value is phenomenal phenomenal like definitely it's it's definitely a game you can get somebody for Christmas if you're looking for gift ideas pick that up pick it up for yourself pick it up for a gift if you like puzzle games it's great it's so much fun I play right now I'm like getting jazzed I'm ready hey what do you got here ah Call to Adventure Call to Adventure um now I I was looking forward to the name because this is based on the book uh Name of the Wind so I read the book the book series uh the Name of the Wind and because everybody was like I liked the series a lot but not as the book series I like the book series a lot but not as much as everybody else I know who likes it they love it I was like I like it I find it's a little slow but um but I liked it it was good it was good enough that I was like oh I'm excited to get the expansion based on the book Now Call to Adventure I thought was a great uh a great concept it's you've got these crazy little these things whatever these flat two-sided like dice symbol things and you kind of like Chuck them and then you do things with them I can't even remember I think you generate points or symbols to get certain cards I can't remember how to play this but I remember I enjoyed playing it the part I do remember is as you go along you're trying to make your story and you're supposed to make the story on like on

22:36 the board and at the end of the game you're supposed to tell your story of like how we how you evolved but I prefer telling your story as you go and I found I get more into it and we're the people across the table it's a two-player game uh we're actually it's just two players one before I've only played it too um and the people across the table telling each other stories like oh I was raised on the streets and I did this and I did that and blah blah blah and uh there's something where you actually in order to use some of the abilities you had to either choose um good or evil and then you had to try to either balance your character and either go good or bad like it's a choose your own well it's not Choose Your Own Adventure at all it's it's Make Your Own Story make your own story so make your own like are you good or are you bad I don't remember me and then you get certain abilities the more you go to one end or the other I think it was like that it might it might have some you might be onto something I know I played this with Brittany and Brittany you know I learned from Brittany terrible storyteller I was like okay Brittany what are you doing she's like I'm a boy in the streets I was like that's not a story that's the picture on the card okay you're in the woods now what I'm a boy in the woods no what's happening in the woods you've been chased by a bear is chasing me no would you like that's just an example give me a story Brittany so then and Chris Chris was funny because Chris isn't very good for storytelling either so I was like you know Chris I'm gonna tell your story for you and I started him off and it was like an inappropriate story about just whatever but it was funny because every card he pulled up just fed right into

24:09 that story and we laughed our asses off but I I enjoyed Call to Adventure but I haven't played it enough to recall exactly how it plays and I haven't played this at all you did I did yeah this is layers of organization like layer layer layer layer so if you mess this up for me Brit I am not going to be impressed well I don't hear a lot of falling so it might be no I think it's good I think we're good yeah okay so Suburbia this is the collector's edition so it's got like I didn't know even Suburbia existed as a game until the collector's edition was available on Kickstarter and this has apparently got everything in here uh introduced to Kayla and Kayla loved it now when we liked it too yeah it's great I I very very much enjoyed Suburbia um the only issue I have with this is we play we play it we're like oh we have all the stuff let's play with all this stuff but the organization of working with all of these expansions like the setup and the tear down oh my God like brutal love the game but I don't bring it out as much because of the setup and the teardown but I could maybe it would remedy itself if I didn't try to play with so many different expansions at once but it's like oh I want to use the tiles from this setting this set and that thing and this and I was like okay now I gotta put these back in the right order because this box is very well organized like they have um it's like this tiered like insert system and everything's very organized by um by expansions and it's it's Suburbia

25:41 is a great game if you want to try something this everybody I know who played it we really love it yeah fantastic game so Ruby is fantastic Burger uh rivensburg rivensberger it's always the gur at the end ravensberger ravensberger ravensburg rivensberger Ravensburger uh Burger the first part is the part I'm having Ravensburger I said ravensburg or ravensburg Ranger like Burger Raven's Burger okay so anyways um Jaws I was so bummed that I couldn't get this in Canada for the longest time because it was like a Target exclusive and we don't have targets here so we targeted con didn't we yeah yeah yeah yeah we got our drink on I was like yeah I finally got it we finally got it and uh never played I opened it I opened a two-player I started reading the rules and it was one of those things you're sometimes very ruling like I just can't I just I'm just not into it today like I'm not into reading the rules and that's what happened and I never got back to it but it's a hidden movement game I think one player plays the shark and the other players play the people on the boat I guess I don't know I don't know I everybody I know that has played it says it's great I don't know they haven't told me why it's great they just told me it's great and I was and I love Jaws the first movie is amazing it then it goes it the first movie is like the second movie's like everything is pretty much just downhill it just it's this quick and it's like goes and then it somehow

27:13 circles down on itself and just goes to like I I should have never existed they're so bad okay um this oh yeah Machina archanga Arcana I remember the title for this game and I backed it and I forgot it existed I saw it on the Shelf and I was like oh yeah it's Machina our King uh I don't know what that is yeah I backed it I don't remember we did because we love buying games that was a long time ago that was back in the beginning I was in the early days vast here's a game we've never opened if someone could teach those games we would play them yeah it's learning the games and then playing the games like Chris Chris has done a good job of teaching us some games yeah yes but problem is we're going to see Chris wants a week and he doesn't have time to do this because he he like you know he works he's at the he like lives in the country yeah he's gotta like take care of his parents he's milking some cows whatever he's doing he doesn't have time to read all these things so we need like prototype full-time like uh rules reader Brittany has assured me that Chris was raised in a barn what's up Chris will confirm that not that he's raising the barn Chris will confirm that Britney's convinced that he was raised in a bar anyways so a vast mysterious manner the concept of this I thought was amazing where it's like it's very it's an asynchronous game where everybody asymmetric I keep saying asynchronous asymmetric game where everybody plays a different part like somebody can play the hero another plays somebody else plays the Goblins another player plays the house another player plays the monster and everybody's abilities are different they all have

28:44 their own goals to try to stop each other the monster's trying to do whatever evil thing they do the hero is trying to stop the monster the the Goblins are trying to do whatever the house is trying to do whatever like the house you could actually play as the mysterious Manner and I think that was an awesome concept and I was like I love this concept I need this game and that's how much I've played it it's in plastic child but anytime I hear something it's like Treasure Island I want to play this I uh I was always curious about Treasure Island I was on the fence and who pushed me over the fence was shut up and sit down the review of this really convinced me to get it I think the one thing they they kind of like harped on that they didn't like was the markers in here were poo it's like they weren't clear to see oh it's like dry erase they bought their own I think they brought they bought colored ones they bought a bunch of colored ones to see which ones work best the review was a long time it was years ago so I never played it but the game is about like I think one player hides a treasure and everybody else has got to find the treasure and I'm just so it's one versus many I think I'm assuming because obviously if I hit the treasure I'll know where it is yeah but yeah I think I'm pretty sure that's that's what the deal is so it's two percent it's two to five players let me just please by ourselves but you have a game that you need to learn the rules for which game was that I already forgot I already forgot oh that's terrible what game was that I don't remember I don't remember it was your duty we I don't know if you guys noticed uh but like it's come up before Britney's terrible teaching games it was one time

30:14 Jessica that was the one episode just helped us with and you're like I'll learn how to play that oh foundations of Rome foundation's room that's what you said you would learn all right all right pretty's ever only ever tried to learn one thing one rule book and it had like four or five pages we already went over the story in a previous video okay so Arc Nova another one from Capstone now if you remember Capstone had juicy fruits ah everything stopped toppling Capstone brought us juicy fruits as you know I have quite a special place in my heart for juicy fruits it's a great game this one it's a little pricier than juicy fruits because there's a lot you know there's a lot in here there's a lot and there's a lot of games there's a lot of game in here there's a lot of game in here um I think the biggest uh thing I've heard negative thing I've heard about this game is it's a long play it's like three hours at least easy it's like like two and a half and you've played it quick for us it's like anywhere between three four hours yeah but we have analysis paralysis yeah we're a slow playing group we're like we drag our asses through everything yeah but I'm okay with that I like long games I like sitting down like having the people and we chat and we're like smart you know we're like smart mouthing each other like you're just chirping each other the whole time and we're like having drinks ordering food and it's a whole casual thing like I like our group for doing that and so that whole like it takes a long time
