added an advanced variant in the advanced variant they thought push down push setup hello everybody happy tuesday afternoon join me for a work jam oh hi dj mcv glad you could join me what is it dinner time around there in the advanced variant all of the technology tiles start boost side up i gotta take a little time to get my footing here yes happy september 21st day hi varys so i uh i've got i've got september by earth wind and fire stuck in my head today so i thought i'd play a little bit of disco in the background here while we work so i'm putting together the the black angel how to play video which i hope to have available for this friday i've been doing so much streaming it's wild that to me it's wild because i used to release a uh i was gonna call it canned i was gonna can't call it dead i think the term that youtube uses is on demand versus live so i would release a an edited on-demand video every single friday but then since i started streaming about uh two months ago i have been doing two streams a week and uh and it's funny the last uh on-demand video i had on the channel was how to play outnumbered which is it was just going back a bit so it's just it's weird to me to get out of that that that flow so this will be the first uh how to play on the channel in a long time i'm excited about it i hope you're excited too what am i doing i don't even know right footage so i said that it's going to be edit pass b i still have uh let me zoom out here and show you what i've got left so this is the whole well not the whole monster but this is the whole video for black angel and it's looking really nice i'm pretty happy with with how it's turning out so i just have this last little chunk at the end here to do edit pass a on which is the dropping the photos and then syncing up to the to the voiceover and then i'll skip back to the beginning and start doing all the uh the exciting on-screen animation stuff without a pass b but this isn't the whole monster because i decided to cover the um what do you call it the solo mode and i'm going to do that in a separate video so it's going to be two videos how to play black angel and help play black angel solo so it's about like another seven minute video after this one that i have to put together as well great and how do we do that i don't know grab some photos and watch the script that's the script up there in the top right so you can see the shot list that i was composing last week what are you guys working on [Music] this is kind of earth wind and fire like isn't it sort of those old disco funk bands there's a fine line between disco and funk i really like funk but disco grates on me after a while and so like tower of power is one of those bands that i think i dig their one song but i got their album and i can't i can't stand it it's just too much after a while start cleaning out your workshop getting ready for your kids school project i'm going to sing the entire time what's the what's your kid's school project your ho you're homeschooling you you're you're you're child student aren't you launched the youtube stream and then i remembered i should be watching on twitch oberon there are no giveaways there are no uh special chat commands that work only on twitch this time out so don't worry about it i think that uh i don't know from the bad funk is better than bad disco yeah that's a that's a good point uh you might try the the marker command so exclamation mark m space whatever and that'll uh that'll submit a marker to me that i can put in the in again rerun i gotta find a different thing to call it a vod i guess the the the captured version of the stream that goes up on youtube afterwards so that people can can navigate it more easily so you can try that exclamation mark m space brian explains markers on on twitch or youtube and i think it should work on youtube let me know there you go but you're doing that from so it works from twitch over on we can see that i don't know if it works for youtube that was the big question there's less chat like on twitch that's for sure i think we timed it and i think there's a i think there's like a 15 second difference between twitch and and youtube with the with the chat lag i think the advanced variant and that's technology even with the youtube uh you can you can set it to low latency and that's about as low as it gets but i think restream adds some latency too so i'm actually streaming to a service called restream and restream is beaming that stream out to multiple platforms twitch facebook and and uh and youtube so i think that might account for some delay as well not homeschooling oh you're not homeschooling my mistake they're home a few weeks ago due to quarantine and the dude needs to make a musical instrument so you're going to make a glockenspiel do i know what a glockenspiel is hold on i'm going to guess what a glockenspiel is i believe it is a hammered reed instrument in the piano family hmm am i right let's see gluck show me glockenspiel am i yes oh it's like a xylophone okay cool yeah i get to confused with all the i mean there's such a big family there's the glockenspiel and there's the xylophone and then there's the marimba and they uh uh name one other instrument in the in the xylophone family clanging natural he's gonna make a flute too that would be a fun one to make you could make a gourd gourd ocarina working right we got stuff to do all of the technology tiles start boost side i think that twitch has separated the chat current away from the video feed what does that mean dj mafi all of the technology tiles start boost setup so i'm at the part of the video where i'm explaining here check that this this cheeky line that's going to be orion shot the designers looked at their game and they thought maybe it's not quite complicated enough so they added an advanced fairy this is after this is at the 31 minute mark let's see that just this game is crazy start boost boost side up side up um i'm looking over here because on my under the under monitor i have my my bin where i'm i'm pulling uh pulling pictures from so you can't see that but that's what's going on boost side up the boots side i want that to go faster so that the up the last image lands on that p of up [Music] so hitting the n key gets you this pulley around the cutty thing you move your cuts this is actually boost side up that's better this is nice for me because i doing this stuff with people potentially watching out of the corner of their eye makes me really conscious of of how quickly and efficiently i'm doing it and after the last uh admittedly abysmal work stream last week i thought man is there a faster way to do some of the stuff that i'm doing and i actually came up with an efficiency to make one bit that was egregiously slow a little bit faster it's a part that you haven't seen yet but the chat client for twitch for a channel is always running yeah that's uh that's true and that's that's when you're designing now hold on i was about to say something incorrect i was going to say that when you're designing a chat bot it's much better to design it on twitch because the chat is constantly running but on on youtube you have to actually be running a live stream in order to test your chat but what i didn't know is that you can um you can live stream to a to an unlisted video so that only the people with the link can see it so i thought that in order to test your chat command it had to be live to everybody's eyeballs but that's that's not the case but still i think it's and then you know the drawback of twitch is that you you actually can't stream privately so you wouldn't be able to do like a patrons only stream or i don't know a food i don't know whatever something naughty uh i don't even know i'm sure that you you still can't do something naughty on youtube even if it's going to an unlisted uh address but so do i like black angel tyler asks uh yes i liked black angel i played with my wife cheryl and my friend dave and dave and i both have adhd so it was a little bit of a longer play session than it kind of needed to be and it took us a while and poor cheryl there's a whole section in here uh it's about when you see the little yellow breaks that's where i'm going to put the you know the titles fly in so there's a whole section in here um where i'm explaining the way that uh this weird way that scoring tiles work have you have you played tyler so the the black scoring tactiles work in in an odd unexpected way that i'm going to have to bring out the the rules gremlin for it's actually i think what i'm going to do is in the title when it says scoring black tactiles i'm just going to have the rules ground and go like uh because it's uh anyway poor cheryl uh explained and they explained and explained it explained and uh she didn't quite grasp the deal with the scoring and the the four point cap on the tiles so she had the tile that gives you two points for every debris cube you collect and at the end she just had this mountain of debris cubes and i could see you're starting to amass it and i was careful to explain i said you know there's a cap there's a cap i don't know she didn't get it so by the end she's like i said okay you earn four points she had this stack just like she was like a squirrel with nuts this stack of debris cubes and she said what why don't i get two points for every single one of them and i'm like uh if you're if you're the game explainer in your group you've been through this before when you get to the end of the game and somebody looks like really hurt and they say why don't i you say i i explained it but it was you know two and a half hours ago but i did explain it and i did explain it three times in three different ways and i used that chart remember that chart i wheeled out and they still get really upset oh my gosh but in chat youtube is still tied to the video yeah it's interesting in youtube we're bouncing around a bit but in youtube it marries the chat to the video what you see on the screen is actually something i've rigged up so that it bakes the chat into the actual video so you'll see it in two places and the reason i do that is because if i accidentally hang dong or something happened in the stream and i needed to to edit something out after the fact whenever you make even the slightest edit on youtube it then divorces the chat from the stream and you lose the chat entirely so i have it baked into the video so that if i ever have to make a dong edit uh the the chat's all still there i've played black angel says dj mcv tennis times and i still don't get the end of the game still scoring it's overly obtuse i still love the game well you'll have to watch the video won't you i think i i i might i might over explain it actually i don't know you'll have to tell me boost side up the boost right i've only done one shot right back to it clock and spiel on the side here sides of the tactiles do different things like set a die of a certain color to a three this would be graphics die to three and then buy it now did you mikey have you played uh have you played trois that's the one everyone compares it to because it's the same designers and it seems like a similar game i've got it i purchased it it's up and shrink because i noticed it was like really hard to get but there was one store in my mall that nobody buys games from and they were they were selling it so i went back months and months later and i thought yeah okay i'll grab it though pro games probably after this one would have sent me a free copy if they had one uh this one i i did i buy this one with my no no dmx plains actually bought this copy for me uh yeah twice you've played 12 once and tyler says twas so awesome i cannot have love for black angel can't convince myself to buy it because i don't know if i'd ever get it to the table but i want to play it bad so oh you won't rush back to tua dj magpie says man this is a this is a polarizing situation that we have here because i've heard some people say to me uh and this is mostly on the discord server that's uh you know i you know love black angel hate tawa or the other way around love to i hate black angel let me just get touch portal open here so that i can start throwing ya animations animation i mentioned the discord server if you're not on the discord server tyler i haven't seen you there but it's a great place full of great people and this is the address and it's probably overlapping my then some people say none i hate them both and then buy it change a die of the indicated color to any color you want again it could be your die but it doesn't have to be sell graphics points when taking a certain action on the ship and store a die of a certain color inside your locker for free during sequence b instead of paying a resource now we're onto something new maybe pb shots pb22 bb we've been playing on mars this week and last week in the week before and that's and we've only played it twice that gives you an idea but we thought oh we can chip away like in our evenings we put it on the the table in the living room we'll just chip away at it as we as we go by but really it's kind of like it's not really the kind of game that you can devote a couple of brain cells to and then go have a snack and carry on with your day we sit down we just go turn turn turn turn turn turn turn turn turn and then the sun goes down and the moon comes up and we're like oh my god where am i so i it's not the best game for that cards that you play around the edge of your board do not activate these tiles they don't is one of these situations where i'm looking at the uh i'm looking at the bin and i can't tell the difference between any of these shots oh i see i see one of these tiles is flipping okay okay that's fine no i get it oh wait it's already partially flipped on this something's going going wrong uh premiere doesn't always sort your things by name look how dirty this is too this is awful this horrible horrible table this velvet material just just picks up lint like crazy and that's like cardboard lit from the edges of tiles and stuff yeah you've played more games of on mars i played one more after the anniversary game we played one more and uh cheryl got thoroughly trounced as trounced as she did last time we each did like one or two points better than we did last time so we beat our own personal bests but still she hasn't grasped the gist of that yet and i don't really know how to how to help her i did something interesting last time i played on mars if you know the game there's a there's a ceiling like a threshold and it's it's like there's four markers for the different kinds of buildings you can put on mars on mars and as they go up you get you get points for raising them up to the threshold this represents like what the colony wants built what it needs right and if you if you go past the needs of the colony you don't get these nice bonuses at the top um but man i had i had the synergy worked out where i was just like i don't care if you need greenhouses i'm building them just didn't get points to get points didn't get points but man oh man i got killed i killed so i know felt good they keep checking in on that still have the opportunity to get new and shrink 150 but the wife said no oberon didn't she he got the you got the old marital kibosh i don't know if i'd recommend that tata says why not get a green table and put it onto a green screen zoom style yeah because it's a lot of that's a lot of post processing the way i put my videos together these are all uh these are all static shots i go click click click click with the little uh remote shutter button um yeah i mean you can do i forget what it is the key filter color key boom here and then you say where's the color key the key color is going to be this thing and it's going to drop it out and then you put a background behind it but i i don't know it's just it would it would be a lot because i'm not i'm not doing video that's weird to say right i'm using video editing software but i'm not this isn't video this is this is a lot closer to animation because it's just stills that i'm sort of stitching along so you'll see as i go around the edge of your board do not activate these tiles you also can't activate them with debris cubes instead you can flip so as soon as i say flip i'll show you what happens so i've got this bin full of bins just like a folder i got this bin full of shots and they slowly flip the thing over and the very first one is the composite of all of those those images so i'm going to throw it here and i'll scale it down oh i see i see hold on i missed one there the cards that you so right there the cards that you play our cards that you play around the edge of your board do not activate these tiles so then when i come into the word flip i need to start a frame advanced trim that off whoa trim this off and this is going to be the last frame in the sequence that it holds on you can flip the tiles see so it's just a sequence of of still images which is all a video is really too but i just get a more consistent result doing it this way uh in the drop drive video that i'm working on right now that's a really weird game because you're actually taking um these sort of plastic chain links and put and describing a flight pattern with them like bending it around and then putting it over your ship and then to sort of see the flight path of your ship and then you take it away and then you move the ship along and i don't like having hands in my videos especially because as you saw when i was doing photography on that one last week i had this this pasta sauce burn on my thumb and i had to put cover up on it i don't think my hands are all that super attractive and i find they just block stuff when you're trying to teach games on video and you just got your big meat paws in the way and you're blocking the stuff that people are trying to see and i don't think it looks very good anyway so what i tried to do with that one was still recording video put the little thing down and then grab the ship and go dunk and then take my hand out and bunk and take my hand out and just do that along the ship and then i went and i edited the parts where my hand was in and it looks okay it was just i don't know it's just more time consuming than the way i do it maybe black cloth without a nap too it would help yeah you know what i tried a bunch of stuff dj mockv i tried a bunch of different types of fabric and a lot of them how do i put it um i don't know a lot i've tried a bunch of stuff and a lot of stuff doesn't work and this is the best this is the the best worst case scenario you can flip the tiles over to their non-boost side during your turn but i might try i might still try um neoprene let's see how that works my big uh objection to using any kind of tail covering is that i can't use sticky tack which really helps me so you see i was able to flip this tile because i used sticky tack and i could use sticky tack because it was on the board but if i have to flip something and it's on the table i can't use sticky tack if there's a covering because it just sticks to it or doesn't stick to it so i don't know i don't know i'm just musing i'm just musing a clean room shut up no i have cats this is part of the problem look i've got like messy stuff all over my shirt you probably can't see it on camera or can you but uh yeah i go and i i walk around and i'm just in a black t-shirt in the upper floors the house they're not allowed downstairs and i just am like a big cat hair magnet and then i go down and it all discharges onto my table maybe the sticky tack on so i mean i appreciate all the solutions but like look i act like i don't know how to do things this is uh this is a lint roller that i use on the table fastidiously and even after rolling it like like crazy uh i'll film it and and then the other problem you saw if if you were on the stream uh two weeks ago you might have seen that i am having trouble with this programmer app that i bought which is what i shoot with uh and then one of the biggest problems is that you i can't beam it out to a monitor so i'm still looking at this tiny screen and i can't always tell that it's in focus and i definitely can't tell when there's little hairs or little pieces of lint that are going to show up like huge when you blow them up to you know 1080p it's just too too little for my eyeballs to see so if if i was able to find a comparable camera app that would allow me to beam out to a monitor and take stills and adjust white balance by number and lock exposure and focus if i had all those features then i would be able to avoid this problem a lot a lot more easily you got cats too there's always more cat hair always yeah it doesn't matter how much cat hair you vacuum up there they keep making it they're like those in those game shows when the people are in the booths catching money except it's just cat hair flying around everywhere i don't think the specs on the cloth are too much of an issue you don't think so eh well hold on let me make it big like look at this ah look at this hair it's drawing me crazy i don't know i don't know but like oh it's a sequence of shots i don't know if i'm gonna fix it you know what i could do hold on for this one in particular because it's it is driving me crazy i could go 50 let's go 54 54 so if i if i do that it'll at least crop that hair out that's a super cheesy way to fix that but it's better than having to go into photoshop which i've been doing on the drop driver one video as well and just you know digitally removing removing hairs photoshop it out i know right but like look i would have to photoshop every single one of those images which i could do and i've done it too but then the problem is that if you're you're looking at the area and nobody would but if you're looking at the area then you see like a weird wiggle going on because i've you know separately photoshopped it out every single time and then you think oh just fix it on one and cut that patch out and stick it to all the different photos but then the um the exposure is ever so slightly different for each photo even though the exposure lock is on oh my god it's a whole thing uh could you not apply some sort of smooth to that area of the video yeah if i knew what i was doing maybe let's see smooth i thought too yeah i thought maybe put a blur up there get the whole thing like in star wars where the emperor has that weird blurry blob over here where i guess i think they forgot to make up part of his face or something like that you got that really conspicuous looking nonsense over there need to call in corridor crew we were the corridor crew that sounds like a uk boyband oh we're the core rooker you can flip the tiles over to their non-booster great i'm getting nothing done here nice talking to you guys i also have a a a hard three o'clock stop because i kind of got immediate four i'm designing a um a vr game for the oculus helmet so i i think i am anyway the project is going very very slowly almost another we're having our fourth kickoff meeting let's have this kick and i won't talk about that project that's not nice tiles over to their non-boost side during your turn when you feel the time is right to use their powers if you get into a situation where you really want to bb23 dude hours if you get into a situation where you really want to use the non-boost side but you haven't flipped the tile over yet this can go back to 50.

you can always just flip the tile you can always just flip the tiles over and forfeit their benefit but that kind of stinks the draw a card step in sequence h of their vfx youtube channel the only vfx people i know i know captain disillusion and uh who's like wicked good and his videos blow my mind that's the guy with the half silver face they get him right captain disillusion and uh and there's two guys who are are they italian i don't know two guys who do a lot of cool like horror movie effects and and neat special effects yeah captain d is ridiculous it's kind of like when i was working at uh ytv making video games my mentor there who who actually uh had uh was instrumental in hiring me he said like he was kind of a kind of a i don't know he he was depressed a lot of the time i'm gonna confess but he said like man sometimes i just i come to work and i see something online and i think like that's it it's just time to go home and do nothing and just be in a corner because no way i could get anywhere near that level and that's how captain disillusion makes me feel i just look at his stuff and like well time to pack it in because i'll never get there instead of drawing one card the drop see you late love me captain d you gotta be careful who you say that too they might misinterpret what you're trying to tell them see you oh hey love me the d sorry what happened i'll send you a link on discord thank you corridor crew is it gonna make me sad though my night sue is having a good thing like ah i give up just a close-up on one of the decks is all that has to happen in this shot so we're going to stay on here i mean i i took photography classes in college and i retained none of it so i don't know what i have to do to get rid of the see there's kind of like a weird hazy glow on these cards i had like all kinds of trouble i was only starting to figure out towards the end how to um i don't know when when i was taking pictures and it was just mostly black tablecloth it would like gray the tablecloth up because it's trying to like open up the aperture i guess automatically to let a whole lot more light in and so if i wanted the tablecloth to look a little bit blacker i would have to like hold up something not quite white but light gray so that it focuses on that and then lock exposure and take that away and suddenly i get a black tablecloth again sometimes it would dull down the things on the table a bit too much the sequence a changes a little bit too instead of drawing one card i'll take this down to 48.

matching the color of the die you just used you draw two cards matching it so this would be graphics and discard the other if you used one of these boosted tiles to change the color of the die you used you need to draw two cards to match the original color of the die before you changed it set up all right this would be fun should be some animation here b34 bingo their most popular series is vfx artists react where they react to movie video scenes and talk about how they did it and with bad ones what they could have done better nice i follow i follow a guy uh who's handles props to history on on twitter uh tick tock sorry who i really like what is going on with this see this is what premier will do to you you look at this and you're like what is happening in the sequence then you realize it's not sorted alphabetically i'm going to sort by name oh that makes more sense right 50.

to set up the game put the so this is hopefully this looks really cool so we'll put it here and we'll put it at 50 and a lot of times i when i shoot stuff and stop motion i'll do it in reverse order very nice i should start f you know what i i made it a goal of mine this year to learn after effects and anytime i open a uh i think the program just does so much that whenever i i open a tutorial like they're talking about something completely different every single time and i just get completely lost it's just like there's just so much to unpack in that piece of software i don't get it but so far mission failed on that uh i don't know maybe i should renew my efforts and then lay down the seven outer sp better better and better little by little b34 uh-oh uh oh look what happened b-34 my how did they do it was it like oh my cousin knows jared leto or i don't know how that works seven outer space strips and then everyone's like jared leto was on hot ones i don't know ryan versus ryan rams yeah it's funny cheryl brought up ryan reynolds uh because she's like he's a really nice guy yeah that's i'm sure he is but first of all he's busy he's making a musical with will ferrell based on christmas carol right now the seven outer space strips randomly not only that but like a lot of these games you may not know this about board games but they just take a real goddamn long time to play so i don't know how many celebrities would actually have like they can go on and do like a seven minute thing on conan o'brien but i don't know if they could really sit through a three-hour play of agricola on some idiot stream you know outer space strips the seven outer space strips randomly i hope i know any thoughts any thoughts on getting is is jared leto your cousin let me know we'll have that covered and fell apart but again will is a celebrity himself and lives in california so randomly i why does this come in so late outer space strips randomly i why why is that last one feel like i'm sitting here supporting everybody else's living i'm too giving you know that's what happened to me with video games too i was doing all kinds of volunteer stuff and running running igda groups and everyone picks a color and five of their color and so here's an example of like see how bouncy that is that's going in and out that's because the focus is pulling in and out as i'm getting these shots and the reason it's photographed like that like i'll put my hand in and put a robot down and take my hand out and i'll click the shutter button before focus is finished pulling or focus won't pull fully like it had before it's a pain in the butt and the reason why i'm snapping the button too early is because i can't beam out to a monitor and see what it looks like i'm just looking at this tiny screen so i'm like okay looks good click but it's too small for me to actually see so then i get this nonsense of just like every other frame is out of focus and too large so there's a slight fix that let me get the the music question answered as quickly as i can what's happening is i have a um can you see that in the top corner so this is called epidemic sound i'm auditioning them so they charge 15 bucks a month and all the sound is royalty cleared so you can play as much of it as you want they have music and they have sound effects you can filter it by lyrics and no lyrics and a bunch of different genres so this is like we're coming up on the last few days of my trial here and i people have told me on the discord server they've told me that they like the music music is a good thing but as far as this particular service goes they have competitors who i want to check out first the goofy thing and i'll try to bring them over here so you can see a little bit better come on now the really goofy thing and it's i can't explain it is down here on their player uh you can't see it let me just shrink this come on now be good so down here on their their player there is no it's neat that you can like split it into stems so you're just listening to like the drums and not all it's cool right like not all tracks support that but like the ones that you do you can just isolate them which i thought was pretty cool what they don't have though is there's no shuffle or repeat i'm like but didn't we did we pioneer that technology in like 1983 like i don't understand why that's not a feature of the player so a few times you can go put together a playlist and i've only found like i don't know eight or nine tracks that fit what i'm doing so like jungle music i was playing arnac i had jungle music playing but it would cut out after about 40 minutes and the stream was a couple of hours so in the middle of the stream i would have to go back over to the browser hit the top track and hit play again people abided it because people are very very nice but i would not have liked to not have to worry about it you know what i'm saying you reckon shuffle is copyrighted yeah exactly someone's got the baton on shuffle nobody else can use it it's apple most likely no i don't know what the heck's going on but just kind of surprised me so about those features extra when you when you when you sign up for a trial you give them your credit card so you you you get all the features that any paying paying customer would have um and it's the kind of thing you know that everybody does when you sign up for trial you got to give them your credit card and then they're banking on you forgetting about it and then forgetting to cancel but i've got it marked on my calendar on that that's that's the kind of guy i am so in a couple days i'm gonna i'm gonna kill it and then try a a competitor and see if the competitor has shuffle and repeat on there on their yeah damn wizards of the coast that's neat that's a that's a story i'd love to tell hamakilatsu so they say you can't patent game mechanics well that's not true you can patent game mechanics and there are keep in mind there are differences between patent and copyright so with a patent that's where you actually have to do the drawing of the thing and submit it to a patent office and it costs a whole huge crazy pile of money like is it i want to say it's like ten thousand bucks to patent something um so because it's so expensive people just rarely rarely do it and it's a high likelihood that your patent will get tossed because it's rare that game mechanics actually do get patented but we've seen a few examples in the video game industry so one of them is the arrow at the top of crazy taxi if you've ever played that game from sega that sort of like points in 3d where you're you're supposed to drive your car next and that was actually put to the test when they used it for simpson's road rage and they put the arrow at the top of the screen sega said hey you know we got that arrow patented they sued and they correct me if i'm wrong but i believe they won that and then another interesting one was nintendo pat and these are you know sega nintendo they've got some money so they're able to do this but they patented nintendo patented the ghost car when you're in a racing game um so that you can trial against yourself so you can play back your past race as a translucent car and try to beat your your your best on the on the track also patented and there are other examples but we really rarely see that in tabletop gaming but in one place we did see is wizards of the coast with magic the gathering patented not tapping but they patented all of magic the gathering the whole shebang every every you know the way that the cards interact and everything and i haven't looked at the diagram but among all the mechanics patented in that one whack was tapping a card turning it sideways to signify that it's been um exhausted and then when you when you turn it back right side up it's okay um so then they were going after people or sending cease and desist letters or threatening people who use the term um tapping in their games but the deal with the patent is the idea is you pay money to ship it to an office get it the stamp of approval and protect it for a certain number of years which allows you to make your money on the thing before everybody comes in and clones it and copies it and that patent is done they know that's expired uh so they've had their chance to make money on magic the gathering and i dare say they've made a few dollars on magic the gathering so now it's it's it's fair game for people to come in and and use that turn card to the side mechanic and i believe even still call it uh tapping but i'm not a lawyer that must be a huge patent yeah you can look it up i i i think who was it uh maybe polygon or one of the big gaming magazines covered recently i saw it the um the actual they actually link you to because it's all public information they link you to the patent for magic the gathering so you can see it wasn't just tapping but it was like the whole game that was patented this is just closer to all right yeah we're not too worried about wizards of the coast we're not like uh i hope they can find their next meal somewhere they're okay don't use the word tap i think you can oliver i think you can but many don't uh copyrighting tapping cards no so they didn't copyright tapping cards they patented tapping cards and they patented magic the gathering the game which includes tapping so it's uh we like to have an oral tradition in board gaming but it's not all accurate so i think i'm giving you the straight dope on that they didn't patent tapping they didn't copyright it certainly but they didn't patent it they patented the whole game which included tapping the patents expired now and so it would be i mean it would you can here's the deal you can sue for anything anytime you want in america nothing's stopping you from suing even you know if it's frivolous it doesn't matter it just goes through and then you let the courts test whether the suit has merit or not and sometimes lawyers get spanked and things get thrown out of court but nothing stopped you from suing so it's not i'm not saying that if you had your own game and you called it tapping wizards of the coast couldn't sue you they can sue for whatever they want anybody can and anybody who sues and has more money than the suey wins and that's how the justice system works so i'm not saying it's necessarily a good idea to call it tapping or if you're going to piss off wizards of the coast but i mean if you had more money to play with the wizards of the coast you can call it frankly whatever the heck you want and you'll be fine back to this warner brothers and the thing from middle earth the mordor games i don't think i know about that one himachali tell me about that one how else are they supposed to get space if you use tap i'll have to report you on twitch yeah it's not hanging dong it's using tap that's it tell wizards of the coast on me snitches get stitches for video this is not a paid for video uh dm explains one of my patrons purchased uh this game for me and shipped it over god bless him and i played it and i don't know that there are a whole lot of great teach videos for it so i decided to make it and when i decide that i hit the publishers up and i say to publishers will you share high resolution graphics of your games with me so that you save me from scanning all the components and cutting them out on photoshop because that's a real pain in my butt and just things look way better when they supply me with graphics than when i actually have to scan components so i did that with a few videos and by and large the publishers were like uh no they said no forget it like really so i come back to them and say cause you know if you were to purchase one of these videos from me and i do do these on a professional basis and people do buy them from me you would be paying this much money and they're worried about piracy they don't want me to take their graphics and pirate games and i have to assure them i'm like i'm like check the channel i've been doing this for four or five years now not in the business of pirating board games in the business of making you know videos about them so you know especially with the mention of how much it would cost them uh that kind of seems to convince people and and most of the publishers relent and say okay yeah that makes sense we'll send you our and when i assure them that i i destroy the images after i'm done with them um some of them i'll hang on to like katan studio gave me uh images for uh for catan and cities and knights and i've hung onto those only because uh i've been planning to do seafarers and i'll i'm gonna need the graphics to see fair so rather than re re-request the assets i'm hanging on to them and i'm working on seafarers after this one but pearl games who makes black angel i hit them up and i said hey can you share some some high-res graphics with me and they were like yup and they sent them right over like no there was no argument no nothing and i was just like and this is in the middle of me asking a bunch of publishers and i was like oh okay thanks very much you know you you you gave those up pretty quick and they said uh well yeah like you did great videos why wouldn't we i said yeah exactly like talk to your colleagues i don't know what's going on uh thanks oliver thanks for dropping in yeah good to see you you'll see how this who what are the the guests nobody the board opening nobody guessed how i did that so i'll just tell you like check this out whenever i'm doing something and and part of it's off the screen i'm just holding it so go for it this is just my hand on the right side of the board holding the board down and then when it lays down i don't have to touch it anymore and just enough of it is off the outside of the shot at the bottom of the screen that i can just grab it with my fingers and lift it up and and open it so like my hand is holding the corner of the board at this point and then here is the it's just the table supporting it right i don't even have to touch it and i'm just touching the corner and the corner outside the shot at the bottom left-hand corner and here again i'm holding it and holding it this is just my hand but it looks great i love that that's great i love it oh sneaky tricks does this look good yet that's acceptable while one more oh i did this out of order oh right and then i realized i did it out of order so i got rid of those dice good good for me one more so i'll try to find the shot that i need before the dice go up and it is this one thanks for the board opening explanation that's really fun oh yeah my pleasure right the cat is so cheesy though right whatever works and this is what i found and i think i mean we're talking about those uh those special effects guys who do their videos i'm sure that if i watch that if you watch those a bunch of shots will just be like like oh my gosh i can't believe they got away with that using like chewing gum and string you know and i i didn't even notice as the viewer watching it if you've ever gone and seen um props uh expos or costume expos like the lord of the rings uh traveling costume expo came through toronto um soon after the movies and so it was neat to go and see all the costumes but then you'd like you'd be right up in front of them you'd be like this is styrofoam like this is made of craft foam from the dollar store and it's spray painted silver how does this look so real on camera i can't answer that question but it's it's it's wild you know i love there's a shot in poltergeist that i really love uh where they use uh i don't love the shot i just love the explanation of the shot because i saw some behind the scenes stuff but it's just force perspective which is a technique they used like early early early like way before computers were involved in filmmaking and forced perspective is the cheesy thing like that everyone does on the leaning tower of pisa will they'll be like like the whole lawn is just full of people doing this and people taking photos of them makes it look like they're holding up the tower but like not really but yeah that's just it something's in the distance and something's in the foreground and you can make a small thing look big and that's all they did they had a big scary a little scary puppet and they made it look like a big scary puppet coming out of the door and menacing someone using force perspective i love it each colored what's happening here am i doing well one more while one more goes in each colored dice depot these shots were hard they were hard to get because look as soon as there's you know with everything that goes on this on the board putting your hand out you risk like knocking something over when you put your hand in or take it out or just like nudging the board it shifts just a little bit and that blows the whole shot so this is how many things is this 5 10 15 20 24 28 32 things on the screen and then the dice come in and then the markers come in so these i don't know these shots were pain in my bottom cu09 oh we got lyrics can we handle lyrics shouldn't spend this much time i got into this because i uh i lost my job and uh while i was at my full-time job i had made two board game videos the first was how to play the castles of burgundy and the second was probably how to play uh seven wonders duel i thought oh that was fun and then i lost my job and i was looking for jobs and i thought during my job search like i don't know i might as well keep making board game videos just so that i have something to do every day so i don't end up just like on the couch in my underwear covered in nachos um so i just kept doing it while i looked for jobs and the trouble with creative jobs is i used to live in the city and when i got that job that i lost i had moved out of the city into the suburbs so i hung on to that and it was a wildly creative job was amazing i worked there for two years and then mismanagement of the company happened and they they sacked a whole pile of people myself included but then uh i was out in the suburbs and they're they're just there isn't creative work out in the suburbs there's no production companies there's no nobody's making movies or animated shows or or video games or anything out here so you know the pickings is slim so you look up jobs and they'd be like oh you can work at the print shop at staples and that's you know that's what you can hope for now this was before the pandemic but i mean this really got into the swing of things well before the pandemic hit so i was already in it too deep to stop and actually take a remote creative job but i mentioned that today at four i do have a a meeting with uh i'm designing a vr game so i have a meeting with that i get the creative creative director title on it that's pretty exciting isn't it let's go into the supplies what am i saying here the rest of the robots go into the the restaurant let's go into the oh right here so i'm gonna have to reverse this [Laughter] now we talked about um cleaning this table i remember very being very picky with the roller and making sure that this table was nice and clean but check out what happens as soon as i get this shot on here the rest of the robots go in you can already see little flecks anyway this is after i like heavily rolled the table into the supply put the dice in their respective depot oh i was gonna say this shot here when the uh when the resources get introduced look at that big old big old cat hair on that piece there stupid thing i don't know creative director is very fancy isn't it though i know i'm very excited [Music] but i worry though that uh i don't know different titles mean different things in different work cultures and i worry that what i think a creative director is supposed to do might be different from what they think a corrective creative director is supposed to do because i i'm hoping this uh this project has suffered a little bit from um lack of lack of momentum and nobody's kind of like setting meetings and holding people to deadlines and things like that so really it needs a need a producer and a project manager to be the impetus of the driving force i'm hoping they don't think that that's what i'm supposed to do i'm lousy with people i you don't want me to direct people you want me to direct ideas that's fine but don't don't make me ask people to do things forget about it as a recipe for disaster put the dice in apparently i found it later i embarrassed my kids tremendously with that uh but i i don't know i thought it'd be funny to have somebody feeding me grapes from off camera and so we did it and then it turns out that it's not very easy to a feed somebody grapes or be be fed grapes because they bounce off a little bit it's almost like bobbing for apples so i don't know yeah i have a whole again if you're uh if you're a patron then you'll have access to videos that nobody else can see and one of them is a blooper reel which is just cheryl repeatedly trying to feed me grapes and it's not going so their respective depots that feels nice that's a little bit delayed so i'll back it up a bit see how this feels dice in their respective depots good in a three player game you only put five so here i'll just uh there's it's just the word five so there's nothing really to latch onto so i'll just go bang bang bang with these next shots i think these are the ones five dice per color oh no actually i can latch onto something but so i'll latch on to five dice per color we'll only put five dice per color i'm nervous that i'm missing a picture here though i only have two pictures left and it needs to be whoa what the hell happened there oh my god oh my god what happened oh my lord what's going on why is that so blurry and i don't even what the hell and only four dice per cup oh that's really bad how do i fix that like obviously i can't go and i'm not gonna go do that entire shot all over again do you think it's enough for that i just say it put the dice in their respective depots in a three player game he only put five dice per car and only four dice per color for two players man what a drag i think i'll just have to say it because i can't switch to that blurry shot that's terrible it's terrible i'm also the problem hold on there's a big bigger problem there's got to be wait there's got to be something going on here i'm in 35 b35 there's no way i would have let that ride hold on there's no way maybe there is a way 36 37 i don't know man 37b ugh so the the problem is what it's supposed to do in a three player game you only put five dice per color is it supposed to those dice are supposed to empty out and it's supposed to show one less robot in them in those depots and then and then they're all supposed to go from the break room in the middle man how did i botch that so bad how did that happen i'll do it with a graphic or something i don't know wow that's major screw up heartbreaking for such a long shot too you only put five dice per color and only four dice per color for two players like what i could do is i could i can mark this whenever i mess up big time i i color it blue and i'll go into my script and i'll go to the bottom and i'll just create a list of pickups of stuff that i missed or have to you know fix um so this would be like around 3305 i'll say like you need a shot of three-piece setup with five dice per player then two-piece setup with four dice per player so i'll get those two extra shots hopefully they won't be too hard to set up then i'll just cross fade to them and the blue will help me find like where to put that when i'm when i gotta go in and do it what a drag though that's okay it'll still look good shovel up all the mission and ravager cards and have them at the ready shuffle up all the fuzzy table the mission and pull up all the mission and ravager cards and have them at the ready if you're playing with three players get rid of oh no see what's happening here okay there's another crazy bad error so this goofy arm is what i use for my stop-motion stuff and it's great because it's really bendable posable you know the camera sits in this little screwy thing um and it's on a ball and socket joint which is great but the ball and socket joint is tightened um with this little just plastic nut um and so very often i'll frame it up and i'll get the camera in the right place for a stop-motion shot like this one where i'm supposed to be taking ravager's roger cards out of the deck and the weight of the phone hold on the weight of the phone will be doing this because it's too heavy for the ball and socket joint but it'll be doing it so subtly that i won't notice while i'm taking the pictures and the only time i figure out that it's done that is here you can see it going down like the whole time right oh oh no and that's just the weight of the phone on the so the fix for this [Music] great the fix for this i don't know is it's not pretty first of all let me just i'm sure you can 3d print something for that yeah exactly yeah yeah you know what it sounded like you're joking but maybe maybe i could i know it's a pretty good system i just have to like i don't know and it doesn't happen on every single shot this is the thing it's only it's inconsistent right and if i notice it happening sometimes i do because the the slippage is fast enough for me to notice oh hold on uh and i'm able to tighten it a bit better i don't know just need your parts to arrive yeah yeah so oberon and i uh we talk about uh we talk about 3d printing a lot on the discord server there's a 3d printing channel so we're both fiends for 3d printing and oberon's got a little bit more success under the belt than i do uh because i uh suffer constant breakages and i was just talking to somebody on the youtube channel about this when they were watching uh an old uh bits please episode um it was the the one where i first got my sla my resin printer and i invented it out the bathroom window at my well my wife really did it at her urging because she didn't want to breathe in toxic chemicals for some bizarre reason but the person was asking me like um just asking me you know how it's been going with the resin printer i said the resin print is not a problem it's the fdm printer that's been terrible but that kind of reasoning i thought like wasn't printing you're kind of doing maintenance as you go because with the resin print you take it out of the vat it's all dripping full of stuff you can't touch you're wearing gloves and you're wearing maybe goggles on a mask and then you have to like rinse it all out but you can't let the rinsed resin go down the drain because it'll gum up your drain which is a mistake that i made and it's it's not you shouldn't put it in the water supply either so i have these sort of aluminum trays these baking trays that are rinsed stuff out into get all the the resin and then i have to put those trays out in the sun and leave them out there for a couple weeks to to cure or whatever and then you have to you have to cure them by putting them under uv light so i have a wash and cure station so it spins them on a little on a little turntable and shines uv lights at them to harden them up so and and you know then you have to you have to clean off your build plates and you have to constantly be stirring up your resin and cleaning out like if you get pieces that that dropped off your build plate and stuck on the bottom of the vat you're popping those out and you're clean you're filtering the resin so just just by the way that you print things with that machine you're kind of tidying as you go but with fdm and and the prints i mentioned this person the prints only take like i don't know two to six hours tops right because you're not doing you resin is great for little little mini things it's not doing you know big bulky stuff fdm you're doing big bulky stuff and the prints will take like i'll i'll slice it it'll be like ah it'll take a day and a half i'm like oh man a day and a half so you know i'll go and i'll print it and maybe it screws up on like you know the 14th of 16 hours you know so most of the time with the fdm printer it's just like when it finishes the print it's been a day i'm like oh thank god that worked and i just want to snap it off the build plate and get out of there and not look at the printer again or or better yet print the next thing that's on the list because you know an insert for a board game takes you can take two weeks to print every single little box and latch and everything that's that's in the in in the print so it doesn't encourage me to do things like clean my build plate or check for clogs or really you know keep keep it in good repair and as a result uh i get issues so right now i'm waiting for parts from china to to fix the machine that's my fear but some prince says over on i have a mandalorian helmet like half half size but it's a 12 day oh sorry life size but it's a 12 day print like like do it in pieces and glue them i know it doesn't sound super fun and you worry about getting everything lined up when you're done with it right but yeah i know what you're saying because yeah it's a 12-day print and then what it fails on day eight you're like ah my life if i had multiple fdm printers and i could have the one sitting in the corner that's just doing you know the eon print and i could i could get because it gets really good man it gets really addictive when you can like push a file onto a machine and hit a button and then get a thing get like a toy out of that oh my god that's like my childhood dream come true remember you go to the dentist offices like here you know pick a toy out of the treasure chest now it's like i don't need your crappy i don't have to get my gums to bleed to get a toy anymore i just have to hit print oh my gosh it's so exciting but it's uh the pain the the the anguish involved i'd almost rather have somebody poke at my gums at this point affect this even know if this is the way okay so this is it so i'm going to do a cross dissolve here between these two shots [Applause] [Music] and if i had something on a second layer i would need to cross dissolve to it too but if i just threw the cross dissolve on here note that they're not they're not lining up right because it puts the entire length of the cross dissolve abutting the end of the right end of the of the of the clip so what i do and this seems like hand fisted as i extend it cut it put it to zero percent opacity and put the cross dissolve in the middle so that both cross dissolves go at the same time if that makes sense and if is that the way to do it i don't know let me know if there's like a smarter way to do that i think there's content and failure too it's part of the process man those those the printer going down was is soul crushing and some of those inserts take a week or more to complete the first place so it's just a massive productivity hit it's true and it's funny you see the content in failure if you watch those episodes i mean they're all about the failure of it they're all about i don't know how to paint they're all about i'm holding the can wrong and part of it is because then people come in and whether they're being critical or supportive or what they say like oh dummy you're holding the spray paint can wrong obviously you got to do it like this and i take a little hit to my ego but then the next time i do it i don't hold this breaking can properly and so i get better by better by degrees every single time i do it right and place them on their first keep them on their starting actions along with one day along with from their some funky tunes oh that's maligned there we go starting actions on their starting actions along with one ravagers affect this nobody cross dissolves usually i do them by hand manually by setting the opacity curves on both clubs oh my gosh i used to do it that way until like a couple of months ago and it is way faster to not do them that way so in premiere i don't know if you can do this in final cut but it took me so long to figure out how it worked because it's non-intuitive when you select the clip you click the clip boom the clip is selected boom this clip is selected when you actually want to do a transition between if you select the end of something that's now a selection you can see the little red it took me forever to figure out that that is actually selecting the edge of the clip right just click the whole clip the whole clip the right edge of the clip the left edge of the clip so anyway you gotta like you gotta select an edge of the clip and you hit ctrl d is your default transition and i have my default transition set to crosses off so you just go click and boom control d and you've got a cross dissolve which is quite nice if both ravagers affect the sound and i used to my default transition used to be a wipe where i would wipe from right like i do like a wipe dissolve from right to left using a thick white outline and then i would drop in a a worst sound effect but the problem with that is check this out when you're doing a wipe you got to go up here to effects and you gotta type in wipe and you gotta drag and you say well you can set that to your defaults and yes you can so if i hit ctrl d you could throw a wipe there instead of a cross dissolve but then check this out it doesn't remember premiere you can't you can say okay my you can tell it my default transition is a cross dissolve and the transition duration is x seconds x portions of a second fine but what you can't do is my wipe had to be in reverse and it had to be a white outline and it had to be a white outline of 12-point thickness so that looks like this right those three things you it doesn't remember so whenever i would do a wipe i would have to go in and i'll white outline 12 points click reverse and then i would have to go into my sound effects folder and drop a whoosh sound effect uh and it's just way too time consuming like right now i'm doing this and i i just get through things so much quicker doing that and i forfeit what i liked about the wipe was when you add the wipe and the sound effect i feel that it kind of like hopefully refocuses people at people's attention or wakes them up a little bit or or alerts them that there's something new to listen to if they kind of zoned out a little bit that's just a guess anyway but uh it's the amount of time i was spending on it like if i could do it and i can hit ctrl d and it throws that transition in with the parameters i want and drops the sound effect in i'd be all over it but since i can't do that quickly i'm going for the for the quick thing because i gotta get stuff done if i do cross dissolves djmk says i usually do them by hand manually setting oh that yeah i read that already but my editing is mostly to music so timing transitions to the audio as part of my jam yeah you kind of have to be playing with handles i try to limit playing with handles to an absolute minimum i hate i hate busy handles on things i can't stand it i can't stand adjusting curves which is why when i draw and hopefully yeah in the next 15 minutes we'll see this um oh maybe not i use uh i use adobe animate and that's because like when uh here i'll recreate something that i was doing so when i was this is for drop drive so i had to have a thing where i was outlining these planets right so what i would do is uh i would just go with the here let me take snap off i just go with the line tool and there's a curve there's a curve there's a curve there's a curve there's a curve there's a curve there's a curve and then curve there's a little curve in here there's a curve here there's a curve here there's a curve here there's a curve here and a curve ends there and put snap back on and connect these last two points and then with snap off i would just be able to go in here and this is the wonderful thing about uh adobe animate and beef and fireworks but they they killed fireworks because they have um illustrator why i have both on the roster because they're both you know vector drawing drawing programs if i if i if i don't have a corner i can just control click and go in there so this is way faster to my mind than using curves i don't know if you do anything with a vector art but i mean to do this with curves would just take forever so it's about as fast as people who are you know efficient with the pen tool and then pop that back in there and go to 12.

so i i i don't know any any any chance i get to avoid giving just if you're not into uh computer graphics 2d graphics here's the the alternative i don't even know how to get into it and animate um right sub selection tool so if i go in here i can click the point and then i can click and drag these curves around click the point but that's like so many extra clicks like why would you do that when you can just go in like this and grab the you know grab the edge of the thing and do whatever you want to it that's so much faster so when people extol the virtues of of illustrator it can do a lot of things that anime can't but the really important things that tracing stuff that i do all the time you got to go fast if you want to go fast you got to go with the animate if both rogers [Music] if i could go with a like a a uh a an alpha blur on the edge of the mask but i just worry that i'm going to see like it's going to stick out because the the the exposures are different you know between are super lame and not funny now he goes on their list eric idol man i saw ericado when he did uh he did a not a reunion tour i think it was like he did a tour called like you know squeezing money from the old wallet once again or something like that like making fun of the fact that like fans of python are gonna pay to see him and i'm an idiot so i went and bought tickets for that show and it was bad all it was was him there's no new materials all monty python material so it was him um acting in these skits but it was just him and like like unknowns that he had hired to be in the show with him so it was like him doing the dead parrot sketch with somebody who isn't john cleese so just some dude right that you've never heard of um so it would have been really bad still if it was him and john cleese it's i still would have enjoyed it because it's not new material i and you and any python fan can recite the dead parrot sketch from memory like just completely wrote and so it's like i don't know i have a trouble with people who do like comedic songs and they make the chorus have a joke or a couple jokes in it but it repeats the chorus like three or four times it's like okay why can't you rewrite a new joke each time the chorus is sung you know what i mean because it gets less funny every single time you sing the chorus so that's that's all this was it's just like yeah we know the parrot sketch it's i it was funny once it i don't want to keep hearing it you know it would have been great if it was like eric idol with new material but no the guy's like 70 something he's resting on his laurels and he doesn't care too at least eddie is and was a stand-up comic prior to other things yeah i mean who are you talking to eric idle i mean he was in a sketchcom troupe i mean they were a troop before they got you know their show or anything but he didn't yeah i don't know i don't know how much of that stuff i don't know enough about python to know how much uh eric is himself wrote put one robot in each depot i don't know that he was the genius behind the troop but he may have been i don't know you know what i mean like you look at the beatles stuff and you're like the older i get the more i appreciate george harrison um okay what am i doing put one robot in each depot to represent slagging off the beetles roll one of each die for the dummy player roll i have seen it easier to stand up though i don't fully get them one of each died what am i what's happening here on each depot to represent watch the monty python doc on netflix explains a lot okay so tell me is he the genius behind a lot of the writing or did you know is it palin is it klies tell me roll one of each die for the dummy player just to give you and your opponent more options you can both buy buy buy dice no he's not the genius yeah i figured i was surprised when i read i don't know if you know well yeah you're canuck so you know sctv so i read a book uh well okay i read a book on sctv written by dave thomas and i found out that he was like the writer of like a vast majority of the sketches and i wouldn't if gunned ahead i wouldn't have figured dave thomas to be the mo you know the moving force behind sctv but of course he also wrote that book so i don't know how much of it is you know his own his own bias but the way he he the way he talks he was the show's head writer and a lot of the stuff came came out of him you can both buy dice he's from the including a lot of the there's a lot of race stuff on on sctv i was just thinking about a sketch the other day because it was it was set to music and i asked my mom about it and she's like oh yeah that's racist i said how is it racist you explain it to me i'm like oh but i still have the catchy jingle in my head the racist sctv jingle whenever you or your opponent choose sequence buy dice from the dummy like you would a real real player whenever you or your opponent choose sequence b then erica was the jingle guy yeah he definitely wrote those songs like he definitely wrote always look on the right side of life and um eric the half of b and all that jazz the dummy players stay in the compartment but dice with zeros on them go back to the depot then for each robot the dummy has then for each robot the dummy has in a depot if the dummy has no dice left in its compartment matching that color roll one of those dice and give it to the dummy so here the white dummy has a blue star and a yellow one oh no oh no see what i did the white player has a blue star and a yellow one and i went yellow one i went yellow star and a blue two oh do i have other shots oh crumbs oh no i messed it up oh wait is there another shot b42 oh thank god i've got another shot nice with zeros on them go back close on them zeros on them go back to the depot by dice from the both by dice from the dummy what am i trying to depict here like you would real play you can both buy dice from the dummy like you okay it is 3 30.
