Hey everybody, it's your old pal Rob. Now, um you know, you know, one of the things I was thinking about and um recently I've been contemplating, you know, what's next for me and everything like that. Um and I've been thinking about how I've game through my entire life pretty much. uh from when I was a kid. Um you know uh one of our neighbors had just a a basement full of board games and we'd play life and we'd play uh Carrier Strike and Skirmish and things like that and and how it really affected us and in you know um in in in in high school when uh Dungeons and Dragons came out, you know, how that changed everything. And I had this kid. He looked like a little rat. And uh it's kind of funny because he didn't like me for some reason because of course I was bigger and this that and the other and he couldn't control the group. And he would kill off my character. Thundar I remember him.

Thund the barbarian. I always would create him and then he would just kill him off because it just it gave him satisfaction. and he was always the dungeon master because he had to be in control. But you know this is the type of things that that affect you know how they touch you through your life. And when I started thinking about the games here that are most important to me and have made such a impact on me. Um, it kind it's kind of funny because, you know, I've been kind of giving Games Workshop a hard time lately and um, you know, I really don't want to. You know, people think you just want to hate on them just because you hate on them. No, I I I get frustrated with them. Frustrated because of all the memories that they did create for me. And I just wish I can have more of those memories with my grandkids and stuff like that. And I I probably could just sticking with the stuff that I have. And what what really hits home is the games that have been so important to me in my life, the one the ones that have really made a difference. And you know, of course, you know, I think the first one I'm going to bring up and and you know, I think you all know it because I talk so much about it is Warhammer Quest.

Now, this this beautiful ultimate treasure book is from my good friend uh Little Monk, who is the best of the best. I mean, without a doubt, he is uh one of the best guys ever. And um you know this game just means so much to me because my son was very very very young and when that came out we worked on it together and I still have my original Warhammer Quest uh set and uh uh I've added a couple to it and of course all the little monk stuff and everything like that and it's meant so much to me because we've created our own adventures. They weren't good. But then Little Monk, you know, just when it started to fall off a little bit, Little Monk came back and really made this game, you know, just what it is. One of the all-time greatest games ever. The other another game, another Games Workshop game, believe it or not, uh Blood Bowl. you know, um you know, right now I'm working on season 3 and um you know, they've tweaked the rules and done a few different things, but you know, you could always play with the older rules and you know, Dungeon Bowl and all that stuff and how much that game meant to me because there was a time when we would set up these seasons and everybody would look forward to Sunday

and it would be pizza and and all kinds of food. We hosted it at my house one time and we had like uh we had 12 people there which was a lot of fun, you know, 12 different teams in this league and we would hold our weekly uh games and everybody bring a set and they were all tables and you know it was a convention before a convention. Uh but uh you know every Sunday playing and and trying to get your players better and trying to make the playoffs and uh you know the ultimate winner got to brag for for a whole month before we would start another season. And you know people drift apart and stuff like that. But um you know we play we played that and my wife realized that I wasn't that guy that was going to go out drinking and getting myself into trouble and stuff like that. and she learned to accept what gaming was is that I just wanted to have fun and it was a good thing for my son and my daughter and we would just have so much fun, you know, especially up northeast back then when it would snow as much as it did. Um, and you were in in indoors for a good six six out of the 12 months. Um, but you would you would take your Saturdays and we'd go run errands and then come

back, watch some old science fiction movies, play a game or two of something and uh, you know, send them off to bed. And those memories were the best. And uh, you know, my wife used to wear a big bow in the back of her hair hair. um she had big beautiful blonde hair and she used to wear um uh a bow and she would make these hot dog sandwiches. They were the greatest freaking thing on earth and uh I mean we were we were broke back then. The kids were small. We were trying to pay for our first house and everything like that. And you know I had all these things and I would just find ways to make it fun and you know th you know those type of things that's how these memories built and Blood Bowl was just uh a big part of that. Uh another one that h used to really fit in during that time was was Space Hulk. Another GW game. This shows you how much GW's games meant to me, okay? Because I had so much fun and why I'm so annoyed in some ways. And it's not because I hate the company and I enjoy hating on the company. I want that the company to to do great and I just want them to put out great things. But uh Space Hulk, oh boy, they especially my my my son and

daughter, they absolutely love Space Hulk. Space Hulk was the end all be all. Um uh they loved being the Genest Steelers. Um, and and and this is another reason why I say, you know, they need to re reprint it and um yeah, you you know, come out with some some different things. I'm looking for something actually. Um and and and you know, the first edition had, you know, a Jean Steeler and you know, um the other expansions there and the the book, the the campaign book. Um, and there was just so much to it. Um, as the other editions have gone on, they gotten better in quality, but they never added the expansions on, and it was always very disappointing, but the memories that we have with Space Hulk and making up uh, you know, different types of scenarios and things like that, um, it it really always was just a lot of fun.

Um it was their introduction to you know 40k and space marines and stuff like that. Another big big game that that just holds up today. And now I'm starting to do things with my grandson and that's the reason I was looking over here. Uh yeah because I wanted to make sure I grabbed the right box was Battletech. And Battletech is a game, you know, now that they've have Alpha Strike, you know, you can kind of start them even earlier, but you know, when you think of places like Iron Win, who makes these unbelievable metal, uh, and it always feels good when you have a heavy mech in your hand. But the things that Catalyst has done with it and just made, you know, just a fantastic and beautiful, we got them all primed up. him and I are going to be painting up our own little factions and we're going to we're going to use aces and see how that works as far as um uh cooperative with four you know he's going to be five in January but you know atlases and stuff like that and then we have Gothic which we're going to goof around with and and uh we just need more figures for it but um you know I remember going to conventions and playing at the old Battletech and going to uh Omni Common Comics in in

Bristol, Connecticut. And I had some friends, Possi, one of his name was Potsy. I forgot the other guy. The other two guys, they were very very good good people. And uh we would just play uh and and play and play and play. Every Saturday I take uh my son down there and it just meant so much to me. Um, and then, you know, finally, another uh big game for me was the very first Hero Quest, uh, which, you know, kind of falls in with Warhammer Quest, but, you know, when we were young and Dungeons and Dragons, uh, you know, you would be able to do that. We would play Hero Quest, uh, especially if we only had two or three of us. Uh, and you know, after we got done doing our homework or working our odd jobs and stuff, we'd get together and just and just play and just play and enjoy each other's company, having a blast. Um, and really really just really loving, you know, the the the the whole fun of it. and when a new expansion because expansions, you know, you didn't back in those days, you didn't know when things were coming out. There wasn't there wasn't the internet that you know, you would look in the back of a magazine or

you would head down to Kmart or something and all of a sudden, boom, there it is. You know, sitting on a shelf and you go, "Oh, new expansion." Then you call everybody up on your rotary phone and uh oh, I think it was push button back by then. and uh just just have everybody come over and just have the biggest blast you can ever imagine. Uh, another another game Panzer uh Panzer Panzer Leader uh is is an alltime great um oh Paner Blitz actually because that came before Panzer Leader and um Panzer Blitz just spending time with my friends. Um, we were we loved war games.

We loved it the, you know, going, there was a convention that would be at the Park Plaza in New Haven and we would go and people would have these elaborate setups and we wish that we could do it, but uh, you know, we saw the bookcase games and Avalon Hill games and all the things that they've done and how much fun we used to have and you know, you just sit there and and then we catch the bus back home. uh and they would have something every month and you know we didn't have money back then but we work odd jobs and try to pick up things at the convention and everybody would chip in and we would you know get certain things and stuff like that. Okay, I'm going to get, you know, Panzer Leader.

And the other one would get, okay, I'm going to get Blitz Creek. And we would all buy the different games, but we would kind of share them together as a group. And um just magical magical times. It it's the best parts of of of my youth, you know, not running around being an idiot, but actually enjoying my time playing games and interacting with people. Uh it was a lot different back then than it is now. And those games are the ones that that that stand out. And you know, there's no script here. I never do a script, but they're games that that that mean something and that that that through time have really touched and moved me. And um I I would love to see some of the games that you guys have as a list and and put them in the comments. uh the games that that that through the years that have influenced you or or really uh the the top games that have built the most memories for you. So my dear friends, in an age of mass production and overkill and all the other drama that comes with the internet and board games nowadays, uh what are the things that you remember most and mean the most to you? Until next time, it's your old pal Rob. We'll see you soon, everybody.
