My painted board games
[Music] kyota Coto and welcome to this video about my painted board games now this is going to be a Whistle Stop tour through all of the games that I fully painted at this point in time the funny thing is before I did 3-minute board games I had a board game painting blog that was my first foray into board game content creation and I started that blog all the way back in 2011 and for a lot of reasons including being a bit burned out painting not having the time because of work and trying to do the Channel I just haven't painted many games in the last 5 years but all that is changing seeing I'm now full-time being a dad as well as doing the channel I have just that extra bit of time that I can commit to painting some more games and as part of that I'm going to be doing painting tutorials for my patrons on patreon and there's two reasons for that the first is that 3 minute board games is a review Channel not a painting channel so I don't want to clog up the Channel with content that people didn't really subscribe to and the second is I've made a commitment to do more stuff for my people on patreon and showing people how to paint paint their games to a reasonable level without too much time and effort is something I think is really quite valuable the first video in that series is already up on patreon and it's a look through all my tools paints and everything I've got in my painting setup and what game will I be painting next well stay tuned and find out let's have a look through the games I've painted so far let's start off with Relic which is a bit of a nothing game if you're familiar with a game called Talisman this is just Talisman but sit in the Warhammer 40,000 sitting and if you're not familiar with over of those games it's just a game where you roll some dice and stuff happens you go on a bit of an adventure you draw cards you roll some dice and you may or may not win there's not a lot of skill involved but one of the things that sets Relic apart is these magnificent busts that came with the game they're much larger in scale than your normal 32mm miniature which meant I could have a lot of fun painting expressive faces and there's two characters I want to showcase here the first is the commissar because look at that da grumpy face and the second is the sister of battle and I'm really happy with how these two in particular turned out next up we have one of the biggest painting projects I've ever done and that is access and allies anniversary edition I don't actually have a shot of the full game set up and painted because because the board is just so damn big that by the time you pull the wide shot out you can't really tell how well painted it is there are seven distinct factions in this game and each of them is painted in line with their World War II color schemes even did some flags and other details on the ships and spent entirely too much time making little bases out of washers little bits of wire and model in clay really really simple flying stands but they are functional and they do seem to work on the table and all the planes seem to have stayed in one thing to note about this game is you'll take like the Japanese forces they have Orange Lines along the bottom of the ships and the units and that's because first and foremost I paint for it to be a functional game therefore having each faction be readily recognizable just as a scan across the table is still important to the game yeah there were no orange sided ships in the Imperial Navy but it's important to keep that game element in when you're painting a board game otherwise everything can end up just a muddy blur of different colors probably my favorite figures in this whole series are the Italian Air Force I really like the little Doling effect I got on the the wings of the bombers and little details like hand painting the insignias next up we have anacron one of my all-time favorite games and the very first game I attempted to paint using my airbrush and here you can see what the figures look like after the initial airbrushing so airbrushes are fantastic for saving your time do models really quickly if you note I've put a video on the top Corner which is actually a real- Time video of me painting the Basse colors on one of the inac models using my airbrush and as you can see it's not taking me that much time once the basic airbrushing was done most of these were just a little bit of extra work like the red guy I hand painted the yellow details and did some basic work on the metallics the silver guy is literally just a ink wash and in some blue highlighting probably the only one there that had a fair bit of actual brush painting was the sort of green and cream one in the middle and the game just simply looks so much cooler uh with the power suits fully painted uh while you're playing it and I guess that's really what painting your games is about sure painting them is fun in and of itself but it's being able to set the game up put the figures down and go yeah this looks cool next up we have another one of my favorite games uh battl Star Galactica and these were also really simple paint jobs uh the sylon Raiders are just a basic black with a a metal dry brush over them and even the Vipers are really straightforward they're white with a little bit of metal on them and a little bit of detailing in red and I used a similar technique that I used in accessing allies of making the flying bases as well these ones are bolts and they're a little bit heavier and less prone to being knocked over and then you look at the bass Stars the basar is such a simple model to paint that is literally painted silver and then with a black ink wash over it nothing else even someone who has never painted a model before could probably knock one of those out in about 10 minutes the trick is to paint stuff so it looks good while you're playing it doesn't necessarily have to be that amazing closeup and yeah if you check the back here you can see how I've made the flying stands the bolt with some modeling clay inside which holds the bit of wire and a little bit of drilling in the bottom of the aircraft so you can mount them really simple stuff and get any of these components from any handy store next up we have my favorite Eric Lang game and the reason you probably won't see me play Blood Rage or Rising Sun because chaos in the old world did it all first and it did it all best and I have a lot of love for this game five different factions each based on one of the chaos Gods from the old world you got sles the God of Pleasure and debauchery H corn the ax welding blood craze God of murder and Vengeance Warfare and generally being a violent sod paple the god of black disease and Corruption Zen the changer of the way the god of magic and Intrigue and the fifth player which is the horn rat which is the god of the scaven which is from the expansion for the game and actually fits in really well because you've got this great four player dynamic between the original four powers and the horn guard just sort of slips in between the cracks and works really well these four gods are the stars of the new Warhammer Total War III and they getting a lot of attention these days but this old game uh C in the old world is an exceptional interesting asymmetric area control game pretty hard to get cuz it's out of print but if you can track down a copy it's a great game to play oh one little detail I did on this is each of the different bases I picked a different metallic color to represent the different gods so slesh has gold Korn has brass nle has a sort of dirty tin and Zen has the silver finish and again it's all about making the pieces recognizable on the table first and foremost as gaming pieces next up an oldie butter goodie it's original descent and I'm really only showing you a handful of the monsters I've painted for this the full range sits in this box which is used extensively by my group whenever we play D and D or any other kind of fantasy game one of the things about the scent is that the monsters come in two different types you've got an elite which is a red based model and the regulars and I've tried to make the Elites in each type stand out and be a little bit different so you can immediately see at a glance which one is the elite and which one is not there's also a shedload of characters for this one as well and I've painted all of those individually trying to match up against the art on their character card so if you take a look at these examples I've tried to get as close as possible to how they look on their cards while also not overcooking the painting because these are actually pretty rubbish quality Miniatures so these are all really basic techniques base coat inking maybe a couple of highlights here and there but it's really simple straightforward stuff if there's one game I slightly regret painting it's horror seriousy and the reason for that is I very rarely get to play it and it's a really interesting Siege game the big building at the top of the board that's the Imperial Palace and it's defended by a bunch of loyal Space Marines and there are incoming attacking chaos Legions so one side is trying to kill the emperor and the other side is trying to hold the line and the models are pretty basic so I went for painting them in a way that made them immediately identifiable from a distance the imperal fists are bright yellow because they're bright yellow and just like chaos in the old world the four attackers match up against the four chaos Gods so as you can see here there's a nurgle group advancing in their trademark green but yeah the quality of the figures is not particularly flash so when you zoom in you can see this is quite rushed work but still looks great from a distance and that's what matters next up is Imperial assault which is basically descent but Star Wars and while I think I painted this one better than I did descent I used a lot of the principles I developed there for example Stormtroopers are deployed in squads of three so I made sure that each group of three was marked individually and here with the trend ocean bounty hunters I made sure you could tell the red Elites from the yellow regulars also quite like that I took the time to make the three different Imperial officers from different service branches within the Imperial military but probably my favorite thing in this whole game is the look I got on the helmets of the royal guard now this is a really simple technique I painted the model's basic red and did some highlighting and shading then I did some extra shading on the helmet and then use multiple layers of a gloss varnish to create that shiny looking helmet and when you see the Imperial Guard they have these really shiny helmets and these long flowing robes and I think I captured that quite well here also spent a little bit more time on the character models but these are still quite basic paint jobs next up we have another Fantasy Flight games Dungeon Crawler and that's Mansions of Madness again I went for some really basic techniques in these ones like look at the shog gos here they they're just basically black of a little bit of gloss on them and most of the monsters I gave pretty much a cursory paint job to I spent a little bit more time on the characters but again these are very simple these most of these characters here for example are just a brown with a brown ink on them with a tiny bit of detail work but not much highlighting at all also did this little weird bit of sculp thing creating like a tentacle thing coming out of this guy's mouth because the Fig is kind of a bit weird he's just kind of screaming so I thought oh why not have like tentacles coming out of his mouth that makes him a bit more interesting looking probably my favorite figures here are the Maniacs that I did um again quite a simple paint job but I use this technical paint from Citadel called blood for the blood God to really cover these guys in Gore and I really like the effect this this person's supposed to be an ax welding homicidal maniac and they they look like an ax welding homicidal maniac again the overall figure quality for Mansions of Bist isn't particularly great uh they've got better as it's gone on but so choosing to paint first and foremost for functionality is again a good option here I also really don't like the bases uh they're oversized they're awkward and uh I've seen people use Clear bases and I'm contempla pling getting a bunch of those and remounting these figures later and now for a slight detour cuz this really isn't a painted game of sorts well it kind of is This is stuff I assembled and painted along with some friends for a game I designed called radlands which is a skirmish game akin to like frost grave or necromunda actually made like a full working set of rules they're not very good and they seriously need to be play tested a hell of a lot more to be workable but I did make my own Skirmish game and build a whole bunch of terrain to play intestin a lot of this would not have been possible without an airbrush which is how most of the undercoating was done for these and as I said I also had some help from my friends especially Mark who did these wonderful red and white security doors and that's the thing with model painting you don't just have to stop at painting your board games you can get really into it and paint a whole bunch of other things as well once you've got the basic techniques mastered you know I've said it a couple times already but this is one of my favorite games it's Star Wars rebellion and there is a tendency for me to only paint games I really really love and if you don't know this has been in my top 10 for a very long time this is one where I did an awful lot of airbrushing because it's simply easier to paint a lot of small Miniatures with an airbrush and then just do a couple of details on them add ATS you spray them gray you give them an ink wash and then you put some metallic on the guns and boom they're done same with the Tie fighters real basic paint jobs I think I spent as much time on the rebel troops as I did everything else in the rebel Army just because they had a totally different pallet to everything else most of this was just sprayed in a sort of cream color and then Brown ink supplied and then some detail work really basic but really effective oh yeah one little thing I did spend a inordinate amount of time on the death stars painting them with a whole bunch of different Grays just so each of the panels kind of stood out a little differently next up we have a game that was born to be painted and that's sythe the reason side is such a great painting game is that each faction really only has five Miniatures six of you get the airship ship and again I really focused on the idea of these as playing pieces first so they each have a base that matches their faction color and a painted in a scheme that is inspired by their faction color probably my favorite thing from this one is deciding not to go with a yellow uh for the crier faction but instead going with a gold and I think it looks really neat I also like the effect I got on the main character's uh Eagle companion if I have one knock on side it's that some of the figures aren't really that good like I really didn't enjoy painting the pink action I found the mea in particular just didn't reward painting so I was like n next up it's not really a board game it's a tabletop Miniatures game but this is the single biggest painting project I ever done and that is for a game called war machine there are a lot of models painted here and uh it's pretty much everything in the Signa Army at the time that I stopped playing also did some custom bases some little bits of sculpting as well and try to make character units stand out plus each figure has uh special thing in runic riding across the front of them some of the figures in this Army are absolutely monstrous uh starting off with the storm strier there's two regular guys standing on top of it this thing took quite a while to paint it's a big job but not as big as the storm wall this is a massive figure uh lots of work on this one a lot of weathering stuff that I did with powders to make the uh different parts of the body look like they were covered in certain and wear overall I wanted this one to look like it was pretty pristine but it just started reing and walking through a battle zone so most of the wear is on the bottom half of the figure this painting project is a large reason why I stopped painting for a number of years after doing all these figures uh all to be aligned in one big army I literally couldn't paint anything else again for for a long long time well you saw Rebellion on the list so the next game War of the ring is probably not hugely surprising I won't talk too much about this one because it's been so long since I painted it this is a first edition copy of War of the Ring I'll just point out a couple of things I really like and the first and foremost of that is again the basing matching the faction colors and trying to paint in a pallette that matches that faction so you look at the herum here they've got orange bases but I've also brought in some uh bronze and brassy sort of colors that tie in with that orange as well overall again the quality of these figures is not particularly High I tried to do my best of the fellowship but you know it is what it is and they are what they are next up is the Cooperative realtime crazy game XCOM one of the painting choices in this one was painting the different types of Troopers to match the color schemes that I actually use whenever I'm playing xcong the computer game so my assault Troopers they're always in yellow my support people they're always in white so I picked those schemes because in my brain I've hardwired those rolls to match those colors also painted the expansion again this was mostly with an airbrush and just doing some inks over it really simple straightforward painting the same is true for the fighters this is real basic stuff and of all the figures I'm going to show you nothing is more basic than the paint job I did on the UFOs this is literally spray painted black a little bit of orange on the edges and some dry brushing and up close they actually look pretty awful but then when you stand back a little from the table they look perfectly fine and they're actually very clear and eye-catching you can see exactly how many UFOs are in each region because again my core bit of advice is paint for functionality overstyle and paint for Speed when you can because having a dozen functional looking games is great having one really nice looking game that you haven't finished off not so great the second to last game is one of the biggest games I've ever painted and that's zombicide and I use some serious labor saving techniques in this one actually took a little bit of time on the character figures they're actually pretty good figures but there were so many characters that I didn't go hyper detailed on them uh I also painted the zombie ball variants focusing on covering them in Gore and making them look kind of gnarly each of the characters got a very basic treatment a lot of this is Basse colors a little bit of inking and maybe some detail work here and there and this one's got a little bit of free painting on his hoodie the thing with zombicide is it comes with an awful lot of zombies and I made a tactical decision to paint them in the most simplistic yet eye-catching way I could I went with monochrome these are sprayed black and then dry brushed it is one of the simplest techniques you can do and yet it works relatively well I've seen people spend a crazy amount of time painting their zombas side zombies and they just end up looking like a muddy blur once you got 30 of them on the table they all blur together anyway but by doing this black and white styling they still do that but the heroes stand out because the heroes are in full color I also complemented this by doing the same technique on the different types of zombies so here are the Berserker zombies which are sprayed red with a little bit of orange highlighting the toxic zombies which started off green and then got a bunch of green highlights and finally the Skinner zombies from the last expansion which I went with a brown palette and went up to Yellow all all I really like how this looks on the table you have the brightly colored Heroes that is distinct and easy to recognize and this faceless hord of Undead but the best thing is this entire hord of Undead took an afternoon to paint and finally we're going to go to a game that I actually spent an awful lot of time painting and of all the games in this collection this is the one where I spent the time to make the figures look good normally my rule is get it on the table make it functional make it so it looks good when you're sitting back from the table here I broke my own rules and spent way too much time painting the game is of course spacehulk now I'm far from the best painter in the world but I think this is still pretty damn good like I'm not going to win a Golden demon sword or anything close to that but it's definitely a step up from functional and I spent a lot of time and effort on every single one of the Space Marines I spent less time on the Jean Steelers because they're inherently more of a faceless swarm but I still think I painted them to a pretty good standard all in all one of the most timec consuming painting projects I've done but probably the one I'm most proud of so that's the end of the list but we've got one more thing to cover off and that is what is the next game I'm going to paint well the honest answer to that is I've already started painting the next game and it's Nemesis and I just got Nemesis locked down as well I've started painting The Intruders but I have not painted the queen neither have I painted any of the smaller ones as well again these models are mostly result of airbrushing and I'm going to be going through how I air brush and paint the queen on patreon in a little while as time and as I mentioned I'm going to focus these videos on doing painting techniques that are fast that are labor saving and that don't need a massive amount of artistic talent to do because I certainly don't have a huge amount of artistic talent I've learned to settle on the quality of the Miniatures I paint like I can look at a piece of art like this and go holy hell that is an amazing piece of art but I know I'm never going to dedicate the time and patience to come even close to this level so instead I've decided not to be an expert painter and it said focus on being an okay painter a good painter at times but someone who paints their games quickly and gets them on the table and if you sign up for patreon I'm going to share some of those techniques with you and a reminder three minute board games does not do paid content keep us Independent by supporting us on
