The Best Games You Can Buy For Less Than £20
Matt, you're roughly my age, >> unfortunately. Yes. >> Yeah. Yeah. Plus my spot. >> Do you remember back in the day what you could [music] buy for £20? >> Oh, wait, wait. This is old men Wayne stories. >> Story time. >> Story time with Grand. What could you buy [music] where when you were a kid with £20?
>> Full tank of fuel. >> Buy a full tank [music] of fuel. >> You could buy a dinner for two with wine. >> Could you? >> You could buy a dinner for two with wine. >> You could buy a whole week's worth of groceries. [music] >> Weeks worth of Yeah, of course. You buy like a pack of wood to use in the stove >> in the cold British winters.
>> Oh, come on. Come on. Yeah, it's true. It's true. Yeah, inflation is true. Everything is going high. All the everything costs more. The games cost more. Board games cost more. But you know what? Let's have a look what you can buy for £20 cuz I think [music] there is a lot. There still is. >> Hello and welcome to Broad.
My name's Matt. And if you're short on a few pounds, this video is going to help you. >> Yeah, cuz we got the our top five [music] games that you can buy for less than 20. >> 20 or less. Really good. [music] And there are loads of great games in that category. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We already do uh did our30 budget video, so go and watch that one.
This is even more difficult. >> Even £20, but there is still a lot of great game for £20. Absolutely. >> Hit the subscribe button. >> Do that. >> It's free. Yeah. Don't cost you anything. >> Nothing. Listen to the song and let's go. >> Rolling dice. [music] Click subscribe. It's a vibe. [music] All we need for you and me.
What's the big [music] play and see? [music] All right, Wayne. Um, we say we did a very similar video for the 30, but the rules are the [music] same. So this is a video of so games that must be £20 or less MSRP recommended retail price. >> That means that you can definitely find a lot of these games for even less than the price we're going to tell you.
But this is the price that we use as a benchmark for is basically what the publisher >> they set a set price go. If you're going to sell it, we recommend sell it for If you scout on the internet, I'm sure you can save even more. But >> you probably can. >> Uh, but saying that, why don't we start immediately with your first one?
>> What's the price? What's the game? >> £20 on the button. >> Mhm. >> Castle combo map. >> Oh, yes. >> Castle combo. >> A great game. >> Excellent game. It's a tableau building game where you're going to be taking cards from common market, putting them into a specific place in this 3x3 grid. Then you'll score in various really clever ways depending on where it is, the cards that it's next to, various other effects that will impact it with a wonderful system.
It's just so engaging >> and a great artwork. >> Even if you don't like it, I really like the art as well. >> But it was quite surprising game. >> It is. It is. It took the market by surprise as well cuz it's just one was a game that came out and everybody started being like what is this is a great game drafting you're drafting the tiles that you're going to build your top >> what it looks like as well it is it is it's quite tinky um when you start playing with more experienced gamers you will start hate drafting and doing all those nasty thing that you can do uh because at the end of the day yeah you want to build your 9 by9 tableau And you want to create the combos cuz you use cast combo three.
>> Um because each one of the cards will score depending on the position in the row or the column what they call next sort of things. Um really really clever. I love it. Great first pick. >> Thank you very much. What do you got? >> I got for $18.99 a one versus one game uh from last year from the guys at Nerd Lab.
And I played this recently a lot. >> Okay. >> Agent Avenue. >> What a fun game that is. >> Oh my god, what a fun game. >> It's this one versus one game where you got this very tiny board. The game the box is quite small. A very nice nice production. You got this uh this board that is kind of like a circular board where the two >> racetrack almost.
>> Yeah, kind of racetrack. And the um the two player represented by minkboards. Basically, what you want to try to do is trying to um [music] get to the other the other with the other other people. >> And how you doing is using utilizing cards, creating a little bit of a tableau in front of you because each card that you play is going to tell you how much you can you can move.
Uh some of them collecting multiple of the same cards will let you move faster. Some will have a special power and so on. >> Some make you move backwards. Exactly. That's not bad. Yeah. But the trick of the game is and how you playing the cards cuz basically you got this eye split you choose mechanics where you're going to have a four cards in your hand.
You're putting two cards down to the other player to choose one of them. Uh one is going to be face up so they know exactly which one is and the other one is face down so they don't know what it is and uh they going to play they're going to take one card and putting in that tableau and you taking the other one.
It's a very simple game, but it's so mindbending and you really need to play the player. >> It's so spicy and you're trying to set up traps. You I know you really want this card, so I'm going to offer it to you, but what I really want to come back to me is the one that is face down. So, it's it's >> and you can play this with anybody.
It's so simple. And I remember when I showed you this the first time, I gave you the first offer, the first choice, and you went, >> I like this game. like immediately cuz it's that you like you immediately why have you given me that choice? >> Yeah. Yeah. There is there's a lot of mind games of like oh is he bluffing is it's double bling the face down or the face up.
>> He knows that I knows that he knows that I know that I know that he knows and that >> I'm going to take this one. >> I should have taken another one. Yeah. >> Fantastic for 1899 15 minutes game and you can you will play it a lot >> with an advanced module in the box. >> Yes. or absolutely double check Agent Avenue.
So Matt, next one on my list is one of my favorite games of all time. It's £20 on the button. >> Stop. I'll stop you there cuz I know it. Going with it. >> It's Scout. >> It's Scout. Scout. >> If you follow the channel, you know that every lease that we do, every bloody single one has a scout in it.
>> Okay. Mostly >> and this correctly, you'll Yeah, I I I agree with you. I >> got 20 to spend. I think you should go and play Scout. Scout is one of the finest card games on the market. It's one of the finest known as ladder climbing games or shedding games. And what you're basically doing is trying to get rid of all of your cards.
>> But you don't want to do it too quickly. You want to do it in such a way where you can try and also earn money from the cards that you play. >> Uh and it's very very smart. You want to be trying to play multiples of cards from your hands or runs of cards from your hands in ladder climbing style. Always trying to beat the person before you.
Right. Easy as that. If you can do that, brilliant. You'll get those points that way. However, you can also choose to scout if you can't take something from the center. If you can't beat, so if you can't beat the central hand, you can scout by taking a card and adding it to your hand, thus making your hand stronger.
>> Two things that does. The bad thing, it gives that player who played that hand some money. So, it gives them points. Don't want that. But it does make your hand super cool. And the clever thing about this game is one of many clever things. You can never change the order of your cards. >> As as soon as you start the game, you're getting those 10 cards and those are in the position that you receive.
You can't change them. >> The only thing so you can do is flip them to the other side because on the other side of the card, you will have a value for one side and another value on the other one. >> Exactly. That's all you could do. And how you can make those runs and and combos is by taking a card from the central area and then pulling it somewhere to then make that combo.
It's it's such a great game. It's so clever. It's a weirdly tricky one to explain, but once [music] you play, it's very simple. Uh and again, it's just a magical card >> and it's one of those games that we we play a lot. >> Yeah, we took it like on holidays with us. It's one of those games that we always want to play.
It's always fun. It's always satisfying. Even if you're losing when you're losing Bentley and I'm normally looks very Bentley, it's it's still like engaging. It's still fun. This is still fun to play. Absolutely great pick. >> Thank you. >> But I got something even better. Maybe. >> Maybe. We'll see.
Depends on your perspective. >> Um I got another two [music] player game. You're the two-player king. >> Yes. Yes, I do play a lot of two players, but this time it's cooperative. And on top of that, your pirates because I'm talking about sail for just £19. >> Sail in that tiny little box is delightful.
It's a very challenging game and it's a very beautiful game. >> It is beautiful game. So basically what you're trying to do, you're trying to move your ship from point A to point B depending on which scenario of the game you you are playing. H in all of this you need to avoid storms, avoid the Kraken breaking the ship and uh you try to make it alive to to whatever you to reach it.
And now you're going to do it is with trick taking and you will say two people trick taking. Yes, two people trick taking. So each time that you play a trick each one of of you playing one card and depending on the suit and the symbols on the cards, you will be able to steer [music] the ship left and right.
you can go forwards or you can blast the cannon toward the Kraken and try to survive another another turn. Um, in all of this with this like fantastic production tool graph where Santiago really sorry um fantastic artworks u the cards everything in that games [music] feels fantastic. It is really hard.
is a challenging game. A challenging card game, but it is a fantastic one. And again, very easy to take with you on holidays. Tiny little >> in Boston only we mean Cambodia. So I took it to the other side of the world. >> We took it. We took it to Essen. >> Yeah, exactly. Very, very cool. Okay, >> Matt.
The next one I'm going to save a couple of pennies on this one. The last two have been 20 on the button. Okay. >> But I'm going to give you £31 change. >> Okay. 1699. >> 16.99. And it's a Rhino Kenisha game cuz my contract determines that I must include a rhythia game in every list. >> And I know this one as well.
>> Go on, tell us what it is. >> Is it high society? >> It is high society. This is Dr. Kitia doing one of his two amazing He does lots of things well. Does tile placement very well. He also does auctions really well. And this is [laughter] very >> do something like the best auction game you can buy, frankly.
High society is kind of that distilled into a card game. The conceit of the game is you're all sort of lardy dy lords and ladies the high society splash yes posh folks people spending money splashing the cash to try and show off all these amazing goods all these these perfumes these furs all these wonderful things which are basically cards that you're going to be bidding on so you're going to bid on those cards two different types of auctions in the game there's that type where you're going to be spending bidding money to take those things but then there's the opposite the reverse auction where you're spending money to not take a thing and that Yeah, there are some bad bet things like Yeah, you don't want to get in scandals or rumors and stuff like that.
So, you try to bid those not to get those cards, >> pay to keep those, someone else can take those with a very interesting kind of set collection piece where you're trying to collect all of these different like goods. The person with the most value of goods at the end is the winner with a twist. If you've got the least money, doesn't matter how many points you've got, you lose because you get kicked out of the high society.
You got to have money or the push people don't want you around. >> No, they don't want to hang out with you poor folks. They kick you right out. This game is so clever. Mostly because the way that the bidding works, you're going to be bidding with values of cash. >> Yeah. >> And they are fixed values.
You've got your 20s all the way down to your ones. But when you spend them, they're done. So you can kind of track the information where if I know Matt spent his 20, his high value card, he hasn't got that anymore. He's only got low values left. So I can potentially try and push him and outbid him in certain ways.
Really clever. Such a smart design. >> We again it's another games that see the tables a lot. So definitely for for that for that money have a lot a lot of value there. There's a lot of games in there. >> Really is a fun game. Yeah. >> Yeah. We really like it. Um for mine we're moving from the eye society in 1930s to the eye society in the medieval.
>> OKAY. WITH CORTISAN. >> CORTISAN for exactly 20 on the nose. >> Nice. >> Again, it's one of like recent game couple of years ago now. Um with this uh very backstabbing fun game >> that's more stabbing. >> Yeah. Yeah. with this fantastic production where the [music] the central board is this kind of like piece of tapestry representing um the house of the lords of the different of the different houses that are the actual suits of the cards that you're going to play.
And during your game, you're doing something very simple. It's going to [music] be um trying to collect a certain type of cards and trying to help the houses in the middle of the um of the board to be the most um famous in favor of favors of the of the king or the queen. [music] Can't remember which one.
>> Uh and how you doing this is each turn you're going to play three cards. [music] One that is going to go in front of you, that is your tableau. One is going to go in on the board. They're going to put um one of the houses up or down depending on which whatever you want to do. and the third card is going to go to another player.
And you can then, for example, if the red house is losing a lot of points, giving the a red card to win means that he's going to lose points at the end. >> Yeah. >> Or you got all the type of cards like you got spy cards that you can put face down that you don't really know which which colors they they belongs to or you got assassin that will let destroy all the cards.
So you want to collect the cards that are going to win in the favor of the of the queen or king or whatever or whatever it is in this like little tab. But it's with the fact is these things of you always need to pass the card to someone else. There is a lot of backstabbing. There's always a lot of fun.
There's always a lot of laugh. There's a lot of like you there's a lot of that. There is a lot. >> It's a super super fun game. It's aggro and it's spiky, but it's short enough that you can't get upset about it. Like it's done in like and it is a blast with a great little production as well. >> Yes.
>> Matt, do you like poker? >> Oh, I love poker. Normally lose a lot of money playing poker, but not in this one. >> No, this one is the only poker that I can play, so I don't get upset. >> You're not losing money. >> Exactly. You will lose £15.99 cuz that's how much it costs you. Less than 20. And that's the gang by Cosmos.
What a game. This is legitimately the only way I think you can play Texas Holden poker without like actual money and it still be fun. Yes. Like part of the fun of poker like at least when I played back in the day I don't really play anymore. It was like you you bet 20 quid 30 quid with your friends and like crazy.
I would bet you like a pound man. >> I'm in the high society. You saw my list. [laughter] >> You were kicked out. >> I was kicked out. That's what normally happens. There you go. So, but this is amazing because it's Texas Hole and Poker but cooperative. And what an amazing idea. I can't believe no one thought of it before.
It's just tremendous. >> It feels like it's always been there but it wasn't. [laughter] >> How did this not happen? And it's very simple. It utilizes this uh common thread that you see in these types of games where you utilize limited communication with the [music] idea of the game being by the end of the hand i.e.
after the flock of the turn in the river, you need to correctly guess in ascending order uh who has the right value of of of hand, right? In in order >> and based Yeah. All based on the real pocket scoring. So, uh high royal blah blah blah. Um but it's really cool. So basically um what you do um each time a new card's getting added to the to the board um you will have you can take one of the chips and put it in front of you and this chips is going to tell to the other people what kind of hand do you think you got.
>> It's basically a little value between one and five. >> Yeah. So for example, if I start my my hand with a double aces, I'll definitely going to pick up the five to tell everybody that I got a really strong hand. So [music] I might might be like, but then someone else might build um three fours or >> Exactly.
So they might want to take the five. So there is a back and forth on trying to find out who is going to do it. Um and then it's the revealing moment at the end of the round. It's always >> had so much fun with this game. I mean it's literally just screaming. >> It's a perfect games for like Christmas time and New Year stuff like that.
If you don't need to be a board gamer to play it, you just need to know like the Texas or them the poker scoring. Basically, >> if you know the the poker scoring, you can play this game. >> But we played it with people that didn't know anything about board games or poker and we had a blast. Anyway, >> still had a blast.
$15.99. Absolute bargain. Great game. >> Oh, amazing. Um, instead I'm staying on the pirate theme. Of >> course you are. [laughter] >> Yo, >> because I do like pirate team. No, not really. Not really. No, we just have the Roman Empire. >> The Roman Empire. Okay. No pirates. >> That's what we talk about it.
>> Okay. Okay. >> Uh [laughter] uh. No, this is um um another fantastic card game. >> Okay. >> And is Skull King. >> Of course it is. What a great game. By the way, Skull King for a game it age. It's not super old, but it's like a few years old. >> A few years now. >> And it is brilliant, baby. You have a high player count.
>> Yeah, exactly. So, it's a $16.99 game. Uh, well, and you're going to take out a lot of this. It's a so so much fun. Uh, basically what you're going to do during the game, um, you got you basically at the start of each round, all the players going to bet on how many trick they're going to take cuz it's a trick taking game.
Sorry, I forgot. >> Yeah, trick taking. >> Um, you're going to bet how many tricks you you're going to get and you want to try to win that exact amount of tricks. Now, the other twist is that you start the game with just one [music] card. So, the first round is one card. So, you're gonna bet I'm winning or I'm losing.
That's it. >> Second round, two cards. I'm winning two, I'm winning one, I'm winning zero. >> And so on. Three, four, five. And on top of that, you of course you been a trick taming. You got suit, you got Trump, you got Super Trump, you got Super Trump. >> Yeah, that's an interesting interaction. a lot of interaction between um the normal the normal suit they number goes from 1 to 13 and then you got the sirens and then you got the pirates pirates the pirate king so the king wins on the pirates the the theire w on the on certain pirates and it's very interesting but um it's one of those trick taking games that everybody will will get around the oh how are you playing in seconds and you can play in large group like we played like eight people >> and uh you will have people screaming and shouting [music] and it's absolutely fantastic.
>> A great great game. Pirate King. Love it. >> Skull King. Skull King. >> And for the last one on my list, Matt, finishing it with the spiel winner from a few years ago now. And it's recently celebrated its 10th anniversary as a matter of fact. Yes, 10 years exactly >> with a new version >> of Code Names.
And Code Names is a tremendous game that you can get for $19.95. What an absolute bargain for that game. And this is a tremendous family/party game that you can play >> that again utilizes limited communication in interesting [music] ways where you have a codereaker that's trying to give clues and they try to get your team to guess sort of various words on this central board that will crack your code, right, without also accidentally giving clues to the other team.
very very smart game. You're trying to use what's called a linking word to try and combine various concepts together in as in as few uh in as as big a combo as possible. So, for example, if I've got the word if I want to I've got the word film, I've got the word TV, and I've got the word movie, I could try and say the word pictures, three.
So, I'm telling my team that there's three words on the board that have something to do with the word pictures and they could maybe pick those things, [snorts] but they could have like there could be something else. There could be art on the top right hand corner and if they picked that accidentally and that's one of the other teams closed, they get they get the point.
>> So, very cool. That's the basic conceit. But really cool. >> Yeah, it's fantastic games. On top of that, you can play um with teams of every size. It could be just like the people giving the the guess and another person trying to to find out or on the other side you can have 20 people trying to guess the test.
So it's a fantastic like party game and familyfriendly game. Uh [music] you can pick up the normal version or you can pick up the picture version that is both great but yeah the the picture version is less um language >> and if you don't people aren't particularly good with words the pictures one works brilliantly.
Like it's absolutely super good. you can pick up. And with the new version of the game that they just released for the 10 years anniversary, you got uh better insert, you got all plastic free um >> slightly better font, it's more readable, more better better slightly better. >> They twisted the actual words and images they're using to make it like more um more friendly to to understand.
So that is um fantastic pick. >> Thank you. >> And uh it would have been my pick as well. >> Oh, there we go. So this is a good crossover, but I do have a very good backup. You've always got backup. One of my favorite game again. We're going to again to a one versus one game. Matt loves it. >> And uh we're talking for $16.99.
Anamoji. >> Anamoji. Okay. >> Set up in set up in Japan. So you got >> I should have expected. you got um um a series of geishians in front of you that the two player needs to try to please giving like gift to them. [music] Uh what the game is is a lame battler and it's a norther lane butler. Lame battling um in the last couple of years came back with like a resurgence.
Yeah, really from games like compile to the old king's crown. It's all lame battling from the most simple to the more complex or like for the emperor or like so so many they came out. Uh but this one is um at this point I think I can't remember the exact year but it's probably like 10 12 years old. So it's kind of like the one of the OG in the in the lane battling and the the lanes are the actual geishes uh when you trying to play cards to trying to give them gift and trying to get their favor [music] toward you.
the first players got three of them in favors wins the game. Uh but it's a back and forward with with the two player giving gift to the to the [music] geisha. Um so the the um the the fables will always shift from one player to the other and there is this fantastic mechanism on ice you choose uh where whatever you you take in some bonuses you need to give another one to the other player.
So there is a lot of mind games there as well where you're going to try to all right I'm putting a lot of efforts on this territory on this lane this geisha here but what actually I want to do in three turns time three turns time is to have this one this one and this one because I know which card they got I know that I can take this bonus even if I give you that there is um there's a lot of mind games again it's one of those like play the player and it's kind of like an eternal design cuz it's it's so simple in a very very Japanese style.
>> Peaceful art. >> Yeah. But it's simple >> but kind of like very tinky and almost like you want to sit there zen music having your green tea and just like trying to play the player. >> Yeah, it's a good one. I think the best dueling games do that. They have this element of trying to outwit, out think, outsmart and play play the other person at the table.
Not necessarily just play what's on the table. Some really fun stuff there. Absolutely. So that was our list of games that you can buy for 20 or less. Some of our favorites there are so many so many games and so many we we left out because we had to make the list. But just to tell you a few, you got stuff like Love Letter is is $14.99.
You got fun 13.99. You got stuff like coupe coupe. I love it so much. You got a lendency. You got so many other like less than 20 pounds. >> Kenneth Darus nominee Far Away. >> Far away. >> 20 pounds. Exactly. >> Wow. Yes. They should have been on this. >> Another one. >> It should have been on this list.
We really like Far Away as well. But um this just to to demonstrate that yes, the the prices are going up and and everything, but there are still some fantastic games that don't break the bank. There are so many games that you can to put 20. You can [music] play any of these games that we just talked about it for hours and hours and hours and always have fun.
You got everything from the cooperative to the muppy to the more thinky >> to the party games. Everything is a little bit of everything. Yes. >> And just to go to show that it's not all about those £300 super allin deluxe versions of games >> that will barely hit the table. >> I mean we like those as well.
>> We like those too. Like you said, Matt, the most of the time, these are the types of games that we're going to play more in that sort of 20 to50 range. The sort of this is the for the game for the average gamer, uh, that you can get a lot of joy out of and some of the greatest games ever designed, frankly.
>> Absolutely. So, uh, if you haven't watched it already, we got that 30 challenge that we did. So, it's same same setup, but for 30. [music] And, uh, what I want you guys to tell us is which one should be the next one? Should we do something crazy like less than £10 or should we do something more like what you can buy between 40 and £50?
Something like let us know. >> Let us know what you want to see and we'll see what we can see what we can do. May maybe give us £15. We'll see what we can do. Other than that, Matt, what is a great value? You get loads of change for 20 our Patreon. >> It's not 20. >> No, loads of change for the two quid.
two three quid you'll get that and in there you'll get for that price some fantastic additional content that me and Matt do with various industry folks and also our specific video podcast monthly updates from myself with various shenanigans that me and Matt are up to including impressions of some games that we've been playing but also Matt secret access to our secret group >> yeah the group that we we're building this lovely community on on the WhatsApp hello guys that if you're part of the patron you will have access to and there's all the people from the patron it's us texting the day while I'm on the toilet.
[laughter] >> And not only um um we got some industry folk as well. We got some publisher, we got some some designer that so you can actually talk directly to them as well. It's a nice it's a nice community that we're building there. And on top of that as well, we got the monthly giveaway that is just for the Patreon.
We don't do many giveaways on the channel, but we do it a monthly giveaway for our Patreon every month. So, for for just a couple of quid, you can get into that. Get in all of these helping us to stay alive and stay healthy. >> Buy new lights. >> Yeah, we need to buy new lights and >> new mic. [laughter] But other than that, we would love you to check out the rest of our videos and we're going to see you on the next one.
Ch. [music] will use for you and me. What's you [music] should play and see. [music]
