Description

Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames — single-word labels like "disease", "Germany", and "carrot". Yes, carrot. It's a legitimate codename. Each spymaster wants their team to identify their agents first...without uncovering the assassin by mistake.

In Codenames, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Lay out 25 cards, each bearing a single word. The spymasters look at a card showing the identity of each card, then take turns clueing their teammates. A clue consists of a single word and a number, with the number suggesting how many cards in play have some association to the given clue word. The teammates then identify one agent they think is on their team; if they're correct, they can keep guessing up to the stated number of times; if the agent belongs to the opposing team or is an innocent bystander, the team's turn ends; and if they fingered the assassin, they lose the game.

Spymasters continue giving clues until one team has identified all of their agents or the assassin has removed one team from play.

  • Target being a friendly local game store? Why the mere thought is preposterous. Sacrilege, or is it?
  • no a catalog of modern board games alone doesn't qualify Target as a friendly local game store. There's more to a game store than just games.
  • Is the friendly local game store of the future going to change from being an independent Mom and Pop Shop to a big box retail chain? Could stores like Target and Barnes & Noble even ever technically qualify as a friendly local game store?

Quotes (from this video)
  • it's not that I wouldn't play more stuff you know if something's really cool and interesting sure why not but my laptop on camera by the way the uh uh probably that blocks it a little bit it's a little bit but it's fine it's fine you guys don't mind
  • if if she ever ends up over this way on the East Coast love to have her on for sure
  • I just don't I would say right now I don't have anything like planned specifically
  • I've been a little self-conscious about the space that I shoot in and having guests
  • Oh yes because I feel like the the illusion would be shattered for them
  • well Landon um thanks for the question I I guess I started initially just because I I I enjoyed watching other people who created YouTube videos especially around board games and I wanted to do something like that but I wanted to do something different than what was being done already
  • and this is again as I've said famously before this was before tabletop so everyone thinks a tabletop right but this was before that even existed
  • I have not played I didn't know you had the copy but I oh no I did I remember seeing it but I have not either
  • I do have a publisher at one point want to come actually to they were going to fly down to the watching PL Studios to actually teach us a game so that we could feature it on the channel
  • I felt like that wasn't going to be good because yeah you could teach it to me but unless you're willing to fly to everyone who buys a copy of this game I'm having a I have a really weird unfair advantage
  • My Hope Is that with the videos it is yeah it's a compliment to the rule book so that you can watch this and go I wasn't getting it the rule book I see it now I get it
  • Pete good friend Pete good friend of the show as well I self serving question self-serving I'm sure that seon's curious though about that too
  • I I think on the strength of blood rage which was a real hit for them knowing this is coming from the same designer and seon is kind of pushing it and promoting it as a spiritual successor to blood rage I think it has the potential for sure
  • well I recently updated my inventory and I believe on B you can H to your collection right
  • you know what I mean like if kep takes on more of the editing stuff and and I can continue to do some of the shooting but also doing his own shooting as well
  • well you answer I've been talking a lot oh no I do answer but I'll let you go
  • normally I try to run a fairly serious game and I said you know what let's try to be a little more silly and not be quite as serious it ended up being very serious as the game went on anyway
  • This is where my favorite experience was okay so normally they were going through things one at a time they went through two different of the scenarios one at a time yeah and then they said okay what we need to do now is we need to scout ahead
  • so the two of them pop into this location one of them's literally blind the other one like suddenly lost half of their powers and they have no way to contact the rest of the party great Scouts
  • we did it over Skype and I had a marvelous time I had such a good time it was really fun it made me go oh this is role playing so great
  • I actually contracted somebody to create an art print of that game that we played together featuring us as our characters in like this sort of action set piece
  • well listen if you had any questions about anything you saw there feel free to put them in the comments below and I'll gladly answer them as soon as I get a chance
  • yeah we really are going to get very polished with these things as they go on I someday someday we can make jokes about you know how rough some things are
  • I find that with Cooperative games you you tend to get at least one or two players kind of as the game dies down just have less interest or or less invested in it
  • This is what they call I think roll and right games
  • if you're looking to start and you don't know exactly who all your players are going to be you're going to invite people over for the first time my biggest tip is to is to pick games that are going to be light friendly kind of games
  • The quickest thing to kill the group is to have everyone show up drop Scythe on the table or Twilight Imperium or Twilight Imperium or something like that and then everyone's like I think video games are much more peeling
  • I I do wake up feeling like I have a knife in my back almost every day even when we're not playing games
  • I have a very difficult time playing Dark playing Sinister because I I do kind of like I I I want to be the hero of the story
  • and so I try to I someone damel in distress I try to go save it someone needs the the rats cleared out their Cellar I'll go do it you know like I just it feels like that's who I want to be ultimately in the game and I suppose ultimately in life
  • I don't think it's an acceptable risk you know and so I I I don't play either good or evil
  • well listen guys uh thanks again for joining us for another live show this has been a lot of fun it's been crazy
  • I'd love to do a convention here at some point like a small convention
  • beaches um just the scenery is just lovely
  • so the box of Neapolitan ice cream had specifically like a column of of chocolate um vanilla and strawberry and Christ's like what do you want and you were like I I like give me the strawberry and I'm like I like the chocolate
  • well yeah yeah no that happened there's more to this exciting thrilling story yeah there was just time on the live show telling a story about scooping ice cream I'm so sorry everybody
  • you know I I I see for the foreseeable future anyway like I think as long as Luke's in school um then we'll definitely stay here
  • oh I I I see these games I get excited about them and then I go okay what do I have to work on this week
  • I was actually hoping you would say it

  • hi everyone welcome to watch it played
  • my name is Rodney Smith and in this video I have a special announcement
  • Stephanie has her own channel where she creates YouTube videos about board games using American sign language as the primary method of communication
  • I'm thrilled to collaborate in this way because I get to combine my passion for ASL and board games
  • my goal is to reach the deaf community in as many ways as possible to encourage them to join in on the fun by having equal access to gaming tutorials
  • watch it played has been such an excellent resource for me to learn how to play games it inspired me to create my own YouTube channel called dibson Blue
  • wouldn't it be amazing if I could interpret Rodney's videosos as well so deaf and heart of hearing individuals have just as much access to his videos as his hearing viewers
  • many people think captions are sufficient enough for all deaf and heart of hearing people while this may be true for many of them providing ASL interpretations gives ASL users the chance to understand content directly in their target language
  • ASL is vastly different than English having its own grammatical structure and use of facial expressions body language gestures among other things they're very different
  • if a deaf heart of hearing person prefers ASL as the way to communicate then providing access to ASL breaks through any communication barriers
  • please let us know what you think of this initiative in the comments below and if you know somebody who might benefit from these types of videos consider sharing this with them and maybe they'd like to subscribe and follow along

  • so when we're traveling with our cars around Australia we do have the luxury of bringing huge Ikea bags full of board games and no problem with that but what happens when we're limited to the things we can bring with us such as when we have to bring clothes and the airline tells us we can only have a single like the airline limit us to that it's very mean of them
  • I think the key things that are important when you're taking a a game traveling yeah portability is an obvious one for the reasons we just said y um and generally it's pretty rare that we have much table space a lot of games tend to be played on the bed y um or on a plane or on a plane so not a lot of space not very comfortable
  • so Ob actually include a few bits and pieces um and again you know this is if you got a tactile person and you like to play and touch rather than otherwise you would just play something on your phone
  • so here are the top 10 games in no particular order
  • I feel that would be lost for so yeah so that's tiny epic Galaxy
  • well this is um why we uh use or we we include mint Works um there's another one as well mint deliveries uh which is also quite well played but we used to this one this is the first one that came out yep and you like this game as well uh yes it's quick and simple and yeah it fits that fits that little um light holiday Niche very well that's Min Works
  • So that is um but it's not that very much the cards is
  • Play with the lowest score wins over the course of the game so it's very replayable the rules are very easy the strategy can get it's not the Super deepest strategy but it's got a nice level of depth to it for a quick two-player game.
  • This is actually one of taran's favorite game it's one of my favorite two player games.
  • It is one of the most popular two-player games out there.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I think the biggest thing for me is we play a lot of four player games four and five player that's sort of our the that's the best count for a lot of the games we play a lot of the heavier euro types of things mostly actually to four players I noticed yeah and where general we're kind of Care Bears when we play really we don't like the big area control sort of things all that much compared with resource building and we're not that take batty or vindictive about things and one of the well there are some exceptions but carry on and I think one of the bigger things in a three or four player game is that I don't like singling out someone to attack or singling out someone to block just for the sake of it and that's a key part of tactical gaming is blocking people out from things when you're playing with higher player counts it for me it's time to do it kind of like I know what you mean though it's like it's about a bit like King making as well especially if somebody is ahead and do you attack that person or do you attack the person that is I don't know that you think that always wins in the game or but is it based on the strategy or is it based on that particular game or you don't want to attack your partner because you're scared that you gonna get kicked out and sleep in the spare part anyway sorry carry on yes okay King making or the need to for the collective team to block each other equally is something that it's something I don't enjoy and I like when I like in a two-player game you strip all of the complexity of that away and a lot of the games that I find scale best to two players or that I like best as two players bring you down to a point where it's just as valuable to block somebody else as it is to forward your own game and that forms a critical part of the strategy so for me that's what I like in a two-player game particularly one that scales down is one where I've got a very clear way of responding to what my opponent is doing
  • I think one thing that I like it I like it when a game recognizes that even though it could technically mechanically scale down to two players when they realize that they don't do it very well and they just leave that off the play account all right I think raise an example is flotilla it's a three to five player game I don't I don't believe there's any mechanic reason why you couldn't play that with two players but because it's got the sink side sky sky nezam and you need to what one side is doing affects the other yes that asymmetry is critical to the game and so they just drop two players off you're right I always wonder I haven't thought about that further why doesn't has to be minimum of three players in flotilla is because of that balance that needs to be you know you know strike for the sink site in the side side thank you
  • I find treating it as a dual and responding more directly to mice I think it's two things firstly it's responding directly to my single opponents cards if I know they're getting a lot of attacks I'll go and get a lot of moats or whatever the defensive one is if they look like they going a fast game I've got to adjust my pace to that I find that a lot cleaner at two players and four players and the fact that the game almost always ends from the provinces being empty rather than the the decks being out I think that also to play it turns it into a race and I just find that works well for plays yes out of all the minions that you have well this this attacking one I hate I play this you get a curse god and although there's a other type as well that affects others I think I can I haven't played all of the minions played most of them I play more than your thing in Dominion there's a van cart and things like that that probably might change it a little bit but you're talking about the basic good just just any of the well the ones I've played certainly I've enjoyed it a to players and that's how we usually play it

Pros
  • Excellent two-player cooperative game recommended for couples.
  • The mission maps add a good challenge by reducing clue or error allowances.
  • The cooperative nature with two clue-givers reduces pressure compared to the original game.
  • The game is enjoyable despite the hosts being bad at it.
  • The theme of linking words is fun and challenging.
Cons
  • The host admits to being bad at the game, with a record of 5 wins and 23 losses.
  • Player's lateral thinking and obscure pop culture references can lead to poor clues.
  • The game can be difficult to watch due to its thinking-intensive nature.
  • Achieving the required number of correct guesses within the turn limit is challenging.
  • The game can lead to frustration when players cannot find connections between words.
  • The sudden death mode can be very stressful.
Thematic elements
Comparison games
  • Codenames
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Grid deduction — We've got the standard 5x5 grid of cards, and we will have one of these maps as we do in the normal game, but it will be vertical.
  • mission cards — We're going to be playing the Moscow mission, which is the one we're stuck on at the moment. The way the mission map works, it basically just reduces your number of clues or reduces your number of errors.
  • Word association clues — Standard code name style which is a single word and a single number.

  • It doesn't matter how compatible two people are, they may not laterally think the same way. Indeed, and that is our problem.
  • It is such a thinking game, it's part of why we played it here.
  • We often talk about how bad we are with Codenames Duet. Now we're going to show how bad we are.

  • Flip 7 is a very silly push a lot game, but it just works.
  • It's the only game where I don't teach the rules before we start playing. I just steal a card and say, "Do you want another one? There is 12, 11, 10. You don't want the same one." Boom. Oh, you're out. Haha. You lose.

Quotes (from this video)
  • A board game, really any board game, has two jobs, two responsibilities, checkboxes it has to tick in order to be worth its weight in gold in order for it to take up space on your shelf in order for you to pay any attention to it at all. It needs to be fun. I mean, that's category number one.
  • And playable means a lot of things in a lot of different seasons of life.
  • The playable part seems to take more and more center stage, more and more relevance.
  • So I've pulled together a list of the 12 board games in my permanent collection. the games that I consider fixtures in my hobby space that are extremely playable that I am not intimidated almost in any situation to pull off the shelf, teach to a new gamer, teach to an experienced gamer that I think we're going to continue and always continue having, owning, getting to the table and having a good time playing.
  • Whatever the case though, whatever you do, remember to do the important thing. Pick games to own that are both fun and playable and preferably start with the letter C if you can.
