Description

Within the charming valley of Everdell, beneath the boughs of towering trees, among meandering streams and mossy hollows, a civilization of forest critters is thriving and expanding. From Everfrost to Bellsong, many a year have come and gone, but the time has come for new territories to be settled and new cities established. You will be the leader of a group of critters intent on just such a task. There are buildings to construct, lively characters to meet, events to host—you have a busy year ahead of yourself. Will the sun shine brightest on your city before the winter moon rises?

Everdell is a game of dynamic tableau building and worker placement.

On their turn a player can take one of three actions:

a) Place a Worker: Each player has a collection of Worker pieces. These are placed on the board locations, events, and on Destination cards. Workers perform various actions to further the development of a player's tableau: gathering resources, drawing cards, and taking other special actions.

b) Play a Card: Each player is building and populating a city; a tableau of up to 15 Construction and Critter cards. There are five types of cards: Travelers, Production, Destination, Governance, and Prosperity. Cards generate resources (twigs, resin, pebbles, and berries), grant abilities, and ultimately score points. The interactions of the cards reveal numerous strategies and a near infinite variety of working cities.

c) Prepare for the next Season: Workers are returned to the players supply and new workers are added. The game is played from Winter through to the onset of the following winter, at which point the player with the city with the most points wins.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It is disrespectful of me to do something with my evenings.
  • There is a special circle of hell for people who show up to a graduation with an air horn.
  • I really appreciate El Paso, you know, taking pretty much that same experience but distilling it down to the essential moves and it's a quick I don't know how long it took us. Less than an hour.
  • It's really hard and it can be really swingy.
  • You don't always have to teach a new game. Sometimes it's good to go back to something you know people like.
  • It is hard to teach because of the exact thing that I watched Don's face get confused about when you say you're in my garden. I'm in your garden.
  • It is chesslike in that you just try to optimize your moves over everybody else's moves.
  • It's a heavier game than I usually like, but I just think it's really clever the way it's put together.
  • The timer fits the theme in this game. You're driving 50 miles an hour in traffic trying to fight off bad guys.
  • Definite Spy Hunter vibes from this game.
  • The dice represent nature, which screws up your whole plan for that magic.
  • If you're going to play Twilight Imperium, you need to drink water, hydrate or not play.
  • And so Gunnet is a game that was sent us specifically reached out to me, asked me if we wanted to cover and they were interested in us covering it on this podcast, which is a first first time.
  • The core of the game is having the discussion of, okay, well, I'm going to give you this because you're going to act first and the first thing that's going to happen is we're going to drive the car to the left one space and then you're going to shoot.
  • I usually don't like a game with a timer, but you know, the timer fits the theme in this game. You're driving 50 miles an hour in traffic trying to fight off bad guys.
  • For a game that's seems like it's about making you feel stressed out for a brief moment and then that stress turns into moments of joy and glory. Like I think it accomplished that more often than it didn't.
  • The other game is Rollin One, uh, which is a golf game. Again, small footprint. It's a small box.
  • You take turns designing the course. So you take a number of cards that represent parts of the the you know the golf course and you put them together.
  • The golf clubs are represented by dice. So there's a d20, d12, d10 and so on.
  • And so there's actually some serious strategy to picking your club.
  • I thought it was very clever and I think both of the games are pretty darn thematic.
  • Make sure you are in the mood for the thing that you're going to partake.

  • I am looking for some new games to take camping.
  • I would love to take some kind of outdoorsy game out there and it'd be fun to just take pictures of it and I don't know talk about it or even just ultimately play it with my family over there.
  • I'm looking for any kind of recommendations that you would all have for the perfect games to take on like an outdoors/foresty area.
  • I was complaining about how bad the insert is and this even though it was karma for me talking talking bad about it. You know, it just goes to show like it's just such a pain to put away because as much as I love this game, it's so hard to table sometimes because everything is so disorganized.
  • I'm honestly just asking to see if any of you have some really cool recommendations or if there are any games that you would like to see me take pictures of in the wild, like creative pictures for fun, um, of any kind of game.
  • comment wilderness because that's where I'm going to be in a few days out in the wilderness, taking some pictures back to how it all started cuz I did actually take I mean, I wasn't in the wilderness at the time, but I did take pictures of Avidel in a local park.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • Resource Management — There's another resource to manage out there. And do you want to keep, you know, sometimes you need fire to go to other places?
  • Worker Placement — You are doing worker placement out with your meles, gaining resources, using those resources to build cards.

Quotes (from this video)
  • One of the nice things is it feels a little less punishing than the original game.
  • Monopoly Deal, I think, is a much more fun version of Monopoly.
  • This game feels bigger than it is, and I mean that as a compliment.
  • And so, you know, it's just full of those kind of mind games.
  • Silver Frost is maybe the most punishing of the games in the series because you are doing worker placement out with your meles, gaining resources, using those resources to build cards.
  • The game is actively trying to screw you over, and you have to manage it as well as the other players out there.
  • I love Love Letter. Uh and uh it's one of my most played games of all time also cuz you can just throw it in a pocket and bring it anywhere with you.
  • And it's inside of a fun Stitch plushy.

Quotes (from this video)
  • But by far the worst part of producing content here on this channel has to be filming gameplay videos.
  • Gameplay videos are the most challenging form of content to not only justify but also produce on, I would say, any board game channel.
  • Would you rather have a gameplay video that is more fun or more accurate?
  • But no matter how many fancy angles, B-roll, music, whatever we add, no matter what, board gameplay videos still get some of the lowest views across the board.
  • So, what do you prefer? quick, accessible 60 to 90 minute gameplay videos or giant aggressive behemoths that take three plus hours to play, table, and cover.
  • The leadup to filming is substantial as well.
  • So, as you answer those questions, I wanted to give you a quick run through of the production timeline we're talking about.
  • What takes a 1-hour gameplay recorded 1-hour gameplay and potentially turns it into a 12 or 13hour production nightmare?
  • So, would you rather engage with a well prodduced video that lives a little bit longer on the channel that is worth coming back to and consuming at your own speed? Or are live streams just more fun?

Pros
  • The double-sided cards are a dynamite innovation and the coolest innovation seen in recent Everdell iterations.
  • The theme and features are well thought out.
  • Resources are adorable and lovely.
  • The artifact tokens offer immediate benefits like resources or actions.
  • The upgrade mechanic makes cards better and reactivates them.
Cons
  • The game is not the quintessential Everdell and likely won't stay in the reviewer's collection.
  • Many changes are low-key and similar to Silver Frost.
  • Not enough features to grab attention and blow away the reviewer.
  • Less pressure and stress compared to other Everdells, which the reviewer enjoyed in those games.
  • The hand restriction of six cards can be restricting.
  • The open market with only six cards can be restricting.
  • Drawing artifact tokens from the bag has a luck element that players might not appreciate.
  • The reviewer prefers other Everdell versions (Duo, Farshore, Silver Frost) for different player counts or experiences.
Thematic elements

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, the cards are now double-sided.
  • Now, I say the cards amazing. I think that's probably the coolest innovation to Everddale that I have seen in the latest iterations of all the Everdells.
  • But for me, the double-sided card is dynamite. 10 out of 10, but it isn't necessarily enough to captivate me for an entire game.

  • I do have a recent video about regrets. In fact, I have two videos about regrets, so you can see um the types of things that I regret about game design and product design decisions.
  • If we can combine those two together for a seamless experience without increasing the price, we're happy to do that.

  • Creativity rarely works that way.
  • So, SCAMPER is essentially a checklist, seven letters each representing a different approach that you could take to modify an existing product.
  • Most ideas will be bad, but occasionally, a prompt forces you into a design space you would never have explored otherwise.
  • SCAMPER will create weird and wacky games, innovative new takes on a tried and tested formula. And that's great, but commercially, without an understanding of your potential audience, it's a shot in the dark.
  • Your player persona is there to help you with your own focus. It acts as a lens through which you can view your developing game, a different set of eyes to your own.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's Ryan from Nights around a Table, and this is Everdell, a city-building, set collecting, card game for 1-4 players.
  • In Everdell, you and your friends play woodland creatures at the tail end of wintertime who have one year to branch out and build prosperous new cities before the snow falls again.
  • Everdell is one of these games where most of its intricacies are written on the cards.
  • One unique thing about Everdell is that the seasons don't progress for everyone at the same time; it's possible for one player to be playing in the summertime, while other players are still in springtime.
  • The aim is to strategize cleverly and stave off that wasted turn as long as possible, just to squeeze every last drop of usefulness from your workers and cards.
  • With each game, you'll deal out four special event cards.
  • At the end of autumn, when all your workers are gone and there aren't any more cards for your to play, either because you can't afford them or your city's full or you just don't want to, the game is over, for you, and you are out.
  • When all players have passed, the game is over, and it's time to count up the points.
  • The rulebook describes a solo variant, where you play in one of three different difficulty modes against a nasty-looking rat named Rugwort.
  • Everyone picks a colour and takes two of their workers; the rest go in the tree INCLUDING THE TURTLES.
