Survive Your Holiday Party with these 15 Party Board Games - Lost In The Shuffle

Game Night Picks - Pair Of Dice Paradise Dec 3, 2025
Transcript 34:49

Today we've got game suggestions to make you the holiday smarty at your office party and not

get lost in the shuffle. Oo, I like that. It rhymes.

Well, I'll be honest with you.

Please, please do. Finally. I've been waiting. I've been waiting for this moment for you to finally tell me what you actually think.

Board games can sometimes serve as a social lubricant.

Yes, that's true. Especially when you're thrust into a situation where you have to have fun with a bunch of friends, family, or co-workers in the dreaded holiday party.

Oh boy. Oh no, not a party at the holidays.

But don't worry, we are going to go through our list of 15 games. We're going to introduce several of them, and we're actually going to even demonstrate a few that we personally have on our list of favorites.

Yeah,

let's work our way through that with the first of our suggestions, which is a great holiday party that plays, I don't know, six, seven, eight people. And that is wits and wagers.

Chaz, I think you'll find on the box four to 20.

20.

So your entire office can play this.

What game have I been playing?

I don't know. Get more friends.

Problem solved. Wits and Wagers is an excellent party game because it's just basically trivia, but it's trivia. Or you don't need to know anything about trivia. All you got to do is be able to bet on who you think knows the right answer.

Oo. So then you can, you know, really point out the office smarty. We have talked about wits and wagers in many, many a video. So, let's just move on actually to the next of our lightning round office party picks.

Man, your box for this makes me so happy. This is like, what year is this from? How long have you owned this? 2008. I have the title recall times up as well, but in a newer version, my box looks like a cube. So, what's great about Times Up is you probably actually already know how to play this. If you've ever played fishbowl or celebrity, those are some public domain kind of versions of this game. But in those versions of the game, you have to come up with words to write down on a piece of paper to throw in your fishbowl and everyone picks something out and then they have to give clues for everyone to guess what it is. And then the next round, same words in the pool, you now do one word to get people to guess it. And then the next round, same words in the pool, you can now only do charades to get everyone to guess it. And if you play with my version of it, you can go in knowing that none of the clues are going to be more topical or recent than 2008. And you're right, there are many a game that is similar to Times Up. In fact, another one that I have really been enjoying,

perhaps even enjoying more than Times Up recently is this little guy, Ravel,

which wow, easy to grab, hard to hold. Ravel is just like times up. Except Rabble adds a little twist of some physical challenges sometimes into the mix. In fact, instead of saying, let's show by doing.

Let's do it.

Let's do it to the doing.

Typically in Rabbel, each team receives a deck of 20 cards. We'll use abbreviated decks of 10 cards and VBug will be the clue giver in all three of the rounds.

Perfect.

First round, you just go through the cards and you can say anything you want to get us to guess what they are. We are ready when we are.

Um, old sleeping chamber liquid uh uh uh cryogenic

So that's round one. We now know the words that are in the mix.

So then the second round, the teams take their decks, shuffle them up, and go through the same words. Same words, but the clues are just one word.

One word only. House. A cottage. Sports. Hail Mary.

Okay.

All right.

Now you're gonna charades it.

Yes. For the final round, no words at all, just charades. Plus, in rabble with each team has several little extra challenge cards they can add to the mix. So, I thought we'll do that. So, this will be the Tyrannosaurus Rex round where your elbows must always touch the sides of your body like a T-Rex.

Oh, no. I kind of already do that always anyway though.

That's true. You kind of have a little bit of advantage. All right, we are ready when you are.

Hail Mary. That's not That's a Hail Mary if there was anything that was If there ever That's a Hail Mary if there ever was one.

Oh no. What did we have?

we did it.

Oh, talk about a Hail Mary.

You guys did it. We did it. Good. Amazing. This week's episodes have all been made possible in part by the Paco game series of games, which includes over 20 different titles in an ultra portable collection. Each one is designed in this pack of gum size and is filled with different strategies and puzzles lasting far longer than a regular pack of gum. Each game in the series is available separately or in three different eight game bundles such as set number two here which comes with eight games to dig into including the game Dig where puppies dig for bones and drop them in matching bowls and Orc a two-player battle of hand management, territory domination, and timing. Rum is a lightning fast press your luck game of set collection and stealing. plus Boo, where two players battle for control of a graveyard by collecting ghosts, just like in real life. There's also a micro expansion available for set 2 with 30 more cards to add new and extended gameplay for each of the titles in set 2. But whether individually or together as a set, Packa Games provide perfectly portable puzzles. And you can follow the link in this video's description to find all the pack of games on their website and at Barnes & Noble everywhere. Pick them up and then really give your brains something to chew on. Question for you.

Answer for you.

If you were a district planner and you had a city that you had to build and you were all out of rock and roll to build it on, how would you build your city? I don't I don't think I could without the rock and roll. Honestly, Chaz, I don't know how one even builds a city if it wasn't built on rock and roll.

Well, Link City right here gives you the opportunity to solve that conundrum. Link City is a nifty dandy peppermint candy little game where you will have little tiles of different sections of the city. Your grid of the city is going to slowly expand as you add new locations to it, but you got to figure out where to build. So the city planner is going to put some pylons down of potential locations where to place the next tile and all the other players interns or whoever they are now will discuss together and try to figure out of those proposed locations which one is the city planner actually planning to build. And if you're right points rejoicement hooray if you're wrong slightly less rejoicement but you still have fun. And that is everything I know what to say about Link City.

What's nice is sometimes you want a party game that's like rockus and high energy and sometimes you want one where it's just a larger group of people working together to figure something out. And that is what this falls in. And that's nice cuz sometimes you don't want to be adding more noise to a party, right?

Exactly.

What's another game we can talk about for a party, Chaz?

Another game that always always goes over well is this guy right here. So Clover. Oh, I love So Clover.

Take us to school, Paula.

All right. So, Clover is a game where you are going to have little cards with words on them randomly placed out on your little Clover board and you need to try and figure out a word that's going to connect the two cuz you're going to write a word on your clover and then the cards come off and then you add another random one in and you shuffle them up and you give your clover with your clue words on it and all the cards to the other players and they have to figure out what cards go where on your clovers. Do your friends know how you would think, what you would do to put these words together? Uh, yeah, it's really fun.

And you know what I recently discovered about So Clover?

The rules encourage you to after a while add more. Add a sixth, add a seventh, make it even harder. No.

Because sometimes that decoy card that you randomly put in is actually way fits a clue you wrote in way better than the card you started with. And that's bad. By sometimes, if you mean every single time. Oh,

Chaz, I'm so excited to talk about this next game and play a little bit of it with you. And that is poetry for Neanderthalss. This is such a blast. It's a word guessing game, kind of like a taboo. But the thing is in this game, you must use just one

monoselabic words.

You can only use single syllable words cuz you're talking like a caveman. You're talking like a Neanderthal. And the best thing about this, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. The best thing about this game is that someone sits next to you while you're giving clues.

And if you say a word that's more than one syllable, chaz.

Monoselabic.

You hit them in the head with the stick.

That's encouraged. That's required.

No stick. Look, it's the no stick. Chaz,

I think we need to give this one a test drive. test drive. No.

So, we're going to do a little rapid fire. Three turns of this. Person on the left is the bonker. Person on the right is the guesser. V-bug will be the first Neanderthal, then me, then you. And that we'll figure it out.

It'll be fine. It's meant to be chaotic, right?

Okay. Once you're ready, take it away.

Jolly place.

Jolly. Oh, so cold.

North Pole.

Yeah. Oh, now it's

Oh, okay. Okay. Uh, small, not bug. Fur [snorts]

mole

legs.

Uh, rabbit. Bunny.

Four legs.

Cute.

Guinea pig. [groaning]

It growls at me. Is it Stewart?

Yes. The card said Stewart on it. That's

not rat.

Mouse.

Love this. not hate small further.

Yes, it's

this is harder than it looks.

It's so hard. That's a onepoint

fur thing animal say monkey go to

place of work and do this circus. A man or not man.

Good one

take all the time you workplace. So I was trying to get you to office where business happens monkey business but then I was like no this is confusing. So maybe I just describe what monkey business is.

So pivoting to a completely new train of thought mid clue giving that might have been your downfall.

How would you have given clues for monkey business?

Oh I would have said skid row song tape two because monkey business was their first release off of their second album. Yeah. And we all would have guessed from that.

Yeah.

I'm in that generation of people who would know about that.

Okay. Let's set up the next game. Next up, we have a fantastico game, Kapple.

I love this game so much. This is one of my favorites.

When I was growing up as a kid, uh my siblings and I would play a version of this that we didn't realize. We just call it categories. We would just go around and everybody would try to come up with a word in that category starting with a letter that hadn't been used yet, which I found out years later, hey, that's tapple.

That's tapple, but like kind of with a hot potato kind of thing going on. There's a timer and you're pushing down the letters. It's really fun and it breaks your brain because under time pressure, it's harder than it looks.

Another game I want to mention is that one right over there.

Oh, this one's good. It's a good one.

Yep. Las Vegas. This is a dice driven game where everybody has like a set of eight dice and you have casinos numbered one through six. You're rolling their dice, putting them on the matching number casinos. At the end of the round, after all the dice are rolled, whoever has the most dice on the casino wins money from the casino. Happiness ensues. I love this game. We've talked about it a whole bunch. By default, it plays up to five players. My version, I have added so many dice, it can play like up to eight. Um, and there's a new version of it, Las Vegas Royale, which tweaks the formula a bit, but still at its foundation and its bones. It's the same game. Fantastico. Great party atmosphere game.

I just played this with my family. It went over really well.

Oh,

someone even said they thought it was better than Strike, another game where you just roll dice. And I told them they were crazy, but it's so good.

You know that saying, great minds think alike?

No.

There's a saying called great minds think alike. And our next game,

you know that saying, great minds think alike.

I've never heard that before. This is only the third time Chaz has tried to say this to me.

Hey Paula.

Yes, Chaz.

There's a saying I've heard of before that goes like this. Great minds think alike.

Oh yeah, I know that saying.

I Oh my word. Well, glad you're familiar with it because this game medium puts that theory to the test. All right.

In this game, players sitting to the side of each other like we are in this practical example that you're seeing right now. Each have some word cards they choose one of their word cards and they put on the table. And then using that word card and that word card, we now then simultaneously have to come up with a new word that ties those together. Do we simultaneously speak the same word? If so, points. Yay.

If not, try again. Boo.

If so, points. Yay.

Fewer.

If not, try again.

Another try.

Yay.

Try again. Fewer points. If not, next turn.

Let's play it. Let's play it.

Okay. So, we'll just go down.

We can do this. We can lock in.

Yes. I have a card to play.

I also have a card to play.

I have tiny. Okay. Heavy purse.

Tiny purse.

Okay.

Are you ready?

Yes.

Three, two, one.

Clutch.

Yes.

We did it.

We locked in and it worked.

I'm so pumped.

Well, you guys get a collective

level one awesome points.

Yeah.

Ready?

Mhm.

Okay.

I have a card.

Okay.

Danger.

Danger. Danger. Cough. Danger. Cough.

Danger. Cough. Three, two, one.

Co. Okay. So, now we have to take those two words, cold and covid, and come up with a word that combines those.

You got this. We got this. Ready? Three, two, one.

Pandemic.

Oh, we're so close. Okay. Pandemic and flu. You got this.

Pandemic and flu. Okay. Ready? Three, two, one.

Lock down. What was your word?

Sick.

Sick. And that's how you demonstrate a round where no points are given at all.

But man, y'all were so just dancing around it the whole time.

Okay, Paul. Well, for you and me, let's say red.

Okay. Okay.

Ribbon.

Red ribbon.

Red ribbon.

Red ribbon.

I've thought of a lot of things, but I'm going to go with the first thing I thought of.

I have the opposite approach. I can't think of anything. So, I'm gonna just see what happens.

Okay,

count us down.

Three, two, one.

Prize.

Oh,

hair and prize.

Hair prize.

Hair prize. You

ready?

No, but sure.

Three, two, one.

Mustache.

What's pageant?

Pageant.

Mustache is really good, too, because they do competition.

Yes. So, mustache

mustache pageant. Mustache pageant. What is a mustache pageant?

You could start one.

The solution was right there in front of us.

Three, two, one.

Mr. Universe

judge.

But like I see Mr. Universe. That makes sense.

Look, obviously we're the most connected. So we were the only ones who got any points and first time, too. We were on it. It all depends on how everyone else's brain works. It's not just about coming up with a good word. It's about coming up with the same word. So, y'all came up with great words. They just weren't the same word.

You're right. The other players are the problem.

That's right.

Thank you, Ty.

You, Paula Deming, are no idiot. Unlike the people you will find in the game, you must be an idiot because this is a game that has a it's not really a hidden trader mechanism. It's a hidden idiot mechanism. Each round, everybody's going to be dealt cards that tell them whether they are going to answer a trivia question truthfully to the best of their ability or if they must answer it incorrectly. Hence, they must be an idiot.

They must be the idiot.

And so, the real trick is is that the idiots have to answer a question purposefully wrong, but not so wrong that people realize they're answering it wrong on purpose.

There you go.

And wackiness ensues. as it does.

Plays three to six people. We'll say one thing about this game.

Very first time I played this, I played it wrong.

You must be an idiot.

Well, we added one idiot into the mix. I was like, "Okay, that was neat." Afterwards, I took the time to read the rules thoroughly and realized, "Oh, you mix multiple idiots into the mix, so you really don't know what's going on. There could be more than one." plays way better when you play it the correct way.

Got multiple idiots involved. Got it.

Who's the idiot now? Okay. Another game that is not unlike some other party games but still stands on its own is this game Jigsaw.

Jinxo.

Now, in my opinion, Jinxo shares some genetic material with the likes of code names and herd mentality. It's that type of game where you have words and you're trying to

kind of want to all come up with the same thing.

Exact,

but you'll never know what's on their mind. That's what the back of the box says. Everyone

plays up to seven players. And it's one of those where you want to match with some people but not necessarily with everybody. And the added twist is if you match with just one person, like you know, Jinx,

right? Jinx, I get it.

Bonus points then follow.

Oo. And they have to buy you a soda.

That's in the rules. It's in the rules.

That's the Jinx rolls.

Mhm. Jinxo is definitely one to check out cuz it has those little added twists.

Yeah.

I don't have a clever introduction. I just want to talk about Just One.

Okay.

Just One is a game where we all play and we're all trying to get a person to guess a word, but we can all only give a oneword clue. Just one.

Boom.

So, you're going to have a card and you're going to show it. The person say I'm guessing it. I have a card. It's got multiple uh words on it. And I'm like, "Okay, do word number three."

Let's say word number three is apple.

So, everyone then writes down a one-word clue to try and get me to guess apple. But here's the core of it.

If Thank you. If someone writes the same clue as someone else at the table, those clues get erased

out. So, you want a clue that's going to help me guess apple, but not one that's so obvious that other people are also going to write that clue because then if all I get is seed because everyone else wrote

core.

Exactly. Then, but the thing with it is so often people no one ends up writing the obvious clue because everyone's worried that everybody else was going to write it.

So, you have seven bizarre words that all are tied together somehow. Now, now it's up to you. Figure it out.

Should we play a little of it?

We absolutely should. This we are going to do now.

Yay. Okay, just in time now for just one. Think about pick a number between one and five.

Three.

Okay,

I'm scared.

Okay, great. All right, I have a word and I hope we haven't written the same word.

Okay,

I don't think we have.

My word is this.

Mine is this.

Oh, okay.

Can I open my eyes?

Yes. Your two clues.

We have performance and symphony. Oh. Uh,

concert.

Yes.

Yes, it is.

You did it. It was concert.

All right. Well, as the old saying goes, anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

That's the jazz motto. I know.

Thank you. So, let's do a little experiment. You and I are each going to write down three different words to increase the odds that we have some overlap here. Okay. So, hide your eyes and pick a number between one to five. I want to do four.

Four. Four.

Great.

All right. To the writing machine.

Okay. Gosh.

Okay. Here's clue number one that I gave.

Great. That's a great clue. Here's clue number one that I gave.

Oh, which matches this clue that I go away? Those go away.

Okay, that's fine.

Okay. How about this clue right here?

Oh, phew. Thank goodness. I almost wrote that, but I didn't. I wrote that. And then just for some fun, just for I'm not going to say anymore.

That Okay, you may open your eyes. All right. You want to guess?

Oh, needle.

Yeah.

Yes.

This is a game that's a kind of a social have friends having fun getting to know and tell stories about each other game.

I like it.

In this game, there's a little pyramid of cards that you'll populate the table with. Each card has a little dilemma at the top. For example, how would you avoid a fine?

I would just follow the rules.

Well, it's not quite so simple, ma'am, because at the bottom of each card is one of two choices you can make. To avoid a fine, would you either pretend to faint

or give them your friend's name instead?

Those are not nice.

Yeah. What's the lesser of two evils that you would pick, Paula?

Pretending to faint. I'm not throwing my friend under the bus unless they owe me money. Okay, you know that about yourself. What you would do is you would keep that to yourself and everyone else at the table is going to try and think, okay, how would Paula respond to this dilemma, this pyramid, then you'll start at the top and you'll travel down a little path taking the left or right option.

A little flowchart,

a little flowchart. At the bottom of the row are numbers and each other player decides which number do I think she's going to end up at at the bottom of this pyramid. Everybody chooses a number in secret. Then Paula reveals what her choices would be on her way down the slope. And everybody else laughs, shares stories, and compares numbers, earns points. But this is one of the games again, the points don't really matter. It's all about the stories and the discussion along the way.

Yeah. And finding out who actually knows you and who's a fake friend.

Oh, right here on the box.

Yep.

One thing I will say about this game is that some of the questions get a little adult in nature.

This is not a family party.

No. No, it is not for all audience members, but it's a it's a really fun time.

Cool. All right. Another game I want to talk about real quick that I think is perfect for a party is Ready, Set, Bet.

Oh, Ready, Set, Bet is basically horse racing the board game. And it comes in a nice little box. Well, at least one iteration of it comes in a nice little box. And there's another iteration that comes in this nice little box.

This is the giant version. Man, if you want to make a splash at your party, pull out this High Roller Edition and get the giant version of this game. So fun.

I hosted games of this one day at my local annual board game convention in town. It went over so well. After the game, people were asking me, "You're bringing this again tomorrow, right?" So, I ended up hosting games of this all weekend long.

Yes. Fantastic. Yeah. One more game that's worth talking about here,

but talking about briefly is 25 words or less because the game is 25 words or less, which is why I said briefly.

I think you did it.

Are you familiar? Thanks. Are you familiar with the old game show, Name That Tune?

Yes.

Perfect. Because in name that tune, the contestants would say, I can name that tune in five words or less. That's not an odd thing to say. this. I can name that tune in five notes or less. And then the other goes, I can name that tune in four notes.

These people are crazy. Four notes is not enough.

Then eventually I can name it in two notes. And then they go, okay, you name that tune. And then someone on the panel would go and go shot by the Beasty Boys.

And that's impressed.

All of that front loing was to let you know that 25 words or less is the same idea but in word form.

Cool. Well, so you go, "Oh, I can guess that in this many words."

The words are the notes.

Uh, let's play it and they'll all understand at home what you're talking about.

That wasn't clear. Each of us has a card with five categories on it. So, Paula, you have five words. You're going to try to get V-bug to guess, right?

In total, you can use 25 words as clues. How many words would you like to use?

Let's just go with 25. So, I'm going to use I think I'm just going to use them all. It's my first time giving clues. And um

you have 25 words. One more little wrinkle. Timer for you.

Oh boy.

Pressure. Angry stare. Odd glare. Yes. Hugging. Affectionate closeness. Cuddle. Yeah.

Wow. Bravo.

Army unit. Squadron. Name of TV show. It should pass.

Push.

Uh, shove. Yes.

Uh, Mark left from injury. Scar. Yes.

Oh, time.

Oh.

Oh, that was so good. The one of his platoon.

Platoon.

Is that the name of the TV show? I might be making that up. Um, and also if I barely know that, you're not going to know it.

How many words would you like at your disposal?

I'll take 18.

Ooh. Okay.

Okay.

18 words. Let's go.

Ready when you are. Go.

Uh, throat noise.

Cough. [clears throat] Clear. Yodel. Speak. Trip. Words. Saying vocabulary

simpler. I can get this. Is it the Benedicting monks with their throat warbling chants?

Yeah, that was some pass. Okay.

Uh, discordant.

Discordant. You have to use words that I understand.

Did I run out of time?

Yeah.

What were the words?

A voice

and chaos.

I'm not sure who I should be mad at.

Chaz, make me guess things. Let's go challenge mode and split it right down the middle. Give me 13 words.

All right. Make them good words because I don't know if our brains work the same.

Okay.

Okay.

Spiritual hope.

Prayer. Uh, wish.

George Michael.

Faith.

Yay.

Soothing plant.

Aloe. Yep. Subtraction result

minus negative uh product. That's multiplication.

Split the
