The 10 Board Games that EVERYONE should have played in 2024!
Transcript
hello welcome to cck thank you for being here today we're talking about the best games from 2024 the 10 most outstanding remarkable added to the Personal Collection my favorite games potentially of all time until in 20125 happens of course I mean we're in that season right every single content creator is putting out their top 10 lists top 20 top 172 top 736 games all of which I played this last year and a spreadsheet link down below so you can cross reference them with my win ratio and make sure that I'm not too biased when I tell you that I had a good time and think you should explore them and play them every content creator is putting out a board game top 10 2024 list and I want to be part of that party I want to be part of that ecosystem I just have one major problem this last year has not been defined by playing a lot of new games this last year has been defined by playing a ton of Classics reinvesting time in my you know Tuesday night gaming group that isn't about playing new prototypes or getting the new hotness to the table but sitting down and playing those games that we love deeply and re exloring games that we've been conflicted in in the past but a top 10 list that's just composed of terraforming Mars Arc Nova Dune Imperium Dune Uprising Dune Imperium with the expansions isn't the most compelling list
and on top of that this last year has been defined by the birth of my first child it's been defined by you know the the preparation and the structure and the changes that were happening in me and in in my wife and I's life approaching the birth of our son it's defined by almost a year ago to date my official diagnosis of ADHD access to medication and a whole new insight into how I operate and approach to exploring the world and I've had the opportunity over the last 12 months to learn grow challenge fail fall apart and continue to rebuild I think I'm stronger and more proportionally and and correctly oriented than I ever have been in my life and I'm really excited for this next year I'm excited to watch and explore the board game industry to celebrate the development of my son as he turns into a one-year-old and then approaches a 2-year-old to deepen the relationship with my wife and finally get some of the games that I missed out on in 2024 to the table so this is my top 10 list from 2024 but it's a little bit of a weird collection cuz this is technically the 10 games that I regret not playing or the 10 games I wish I got to the table the 10 games that arrived that I was and have been for a long time
so excited about that with any other context or circumstance I would have ripped them open you know stuck cards on them and found a friend that was willing to learn the rules and get it to the table with me but this year that didn't happen and yet this is actually a pretty reliable list of 10 incredible games the unique thing about being a content creator about working in this board game Space is that we are always playing previewing and prepping content on games that still haven't arrived and so the vast majority of the games sitting at the table here that I'm about to run through very quickly they're all games that I actually have some depth and knowledge in games that I've experienced before they're games that I have played prototypes of I've been in conversation with the publisher going through the developmental stages and watching as the game is progressed they're games that I already know are part of my collection part of the the core that is you know my board game Library I would argue that most of these games probably at least six or seven of these games would be on my official top 10 list of 2024 if I had only gotten them to the table in the first place so with that let's sit down talk about some of the Incredible games that came out this last year and uh talk about how I
I'm looking forward to playing them in 2025 cuz I missed them in 2024 and we're going to start with slay the Spire this was a game that arrived Midway through the year a game that is based off a video game that I love and adore I have opened unboxed sleeved read through the rule book multiple times put this on a list of 10 games I want to obsess over have had it on my primary board game shelf for the better part of five or 6 months now and I still mean and am invested in all of those ways I cannot wait to dive head first into slay the spire and bury myself under the folds of this you know beautiful adaptation of a video game IP and yet and with slay the Spire 2 coming out I never got this to the table I I still haven't been able to sit down and play it I I've played the Prototype back in the day very much looking forward and I know how the game runs I've imagined thought through read the rule book opened it up set it on the table but always something else has came up before I was able to sit down for a full cycle and a dedicated gameplay experience and like I said about 4 months ago all of gaming disappeared for a season so slay the Spire is coming to the channel very very soon it is still one of the 10 games I desperately want to obsess over next game arrived Maybe a month month and a half ago as far as I'm aware again it's been a blur this is unconscious Mind by Fantasia a game that
again we played the Prototype of and it was the outstanding prototype one of the outstanding prototypes of the year I believe in 2023 I played it with West we have a preview gameplay up online we loved this game we thought it was beautiful how it explored the mind how you know the different dreams and the way that you cured them the Curative effects of sitting down with the the fium fian approach to uh Psychotherapy sitting and and and and not having any direct contact but talking through problems and using the uh expression of of the vocalization of trauma as a way to heal and cure the artwork was gorgeous and the application of psychology in this game was accurate enough to be deeply satisfying and so unconscious mind has been opened it journeyed with my wife and I all the way to New Jersey where we had intended to play it but we ended up getting a number of the class to the table this was the trip where we taught one of our close friends how to play terraforming Mars and I think we got six or seven games of TM to the table and unconscious mind cu no one quite knew it perfectly it kept getting pushed to the side for games that we already knew and could get played easily and quickly with a at the time two-month-old still figuring out exactly what it was to well be alive to to to exist in the world and and I don't know if you know this but being a baby being a baby's hard it's not an easy job moving on to like I mean this is It's kind of remarkable that this isn't even opened I haven't done a unboxing video I
haven't showcased it on the channel we had more Kingdom Death product show up this year and I didn't touch it I I've honestly been waiting and hoping that shirou would be able to pop over with me and you know rip the the the seal wrap over off of this and then sit down for a dedicated gaming session but we've got the frog dog and we have have the vignette of death kidum boot Butcher on top of that we had the Black Knight campaign that showed up which I did do an unboxing of but we haven't had a chance to sit down play through and film we will get Kingdom Death content back to this channel soon you know I would say I promise but I don't know what soon means to you for me it means as soon as I possibly can but you know we just we just didn't have the bandwidth this last year and so those are still in shrink and we will be opening them soon along with the the plastic Showdown board moving on let's do some stuff that's stacked up behind me here you've got one that you can see right here andromeda's Edge the uh you know followup the sequel in spirit to dwellings of elderil a game again that we heavily featured showcased and celebrated on the channel lots of people have been in love with this and this has actually gotten played not my not my copy of course because my copy is still in the oh nice big cardboard box but this did get did get played right here on this table my my Tuesday night game group for one of the evenings when I was on baby Duty sat down and got a
full session of it out and man the game looks gorgeous and everyone said they had a fantastic time so I'm excited to break mine open and actually get it get it played again sometime soon I've got a few more seon titles back here that are probably worth shouting out we've got the recently arrived cthulu death may die this this this newer campaign I mean and this is a game that we have loved for a long time one that we're very excited to actually start playing through the new chapters in it and again I'm not even taking it out of the box like seon has this problem of delivering too much stuff and stuff that doesn't necessarily easily find its way into an organizational pattern with the other stuff that you have so for now now our cthulu death may die copy is staying right there it's staying right safe and sealed in a box until we have room on the shelf and we get it open and we have a dedicated gaming session where we can hang out and play it a game that I I really never should have got a copy of because this is just way too much this is one of like six or seven boxes for Simon's uh Marvel uh United this is the Multiverse camp campaign I don't think we backed the other campaign that happened I think there's a third one even that has came out and showed up or not showed up there's like DC and I I don't I have no idea I haven't been
following along closely enough but like I've got like six boxes this size and I already have a full shelf packed to the brim I have what is that five callix cubes packed to the brim with Marvel United already I didn't need more and also my wife enjoys it and she's really excited to to to have this opened up and just sit down and start playing through it and have an accessible approachable game in this genre that we hold on to until our sun starts playing board games with us so we're keeping it for now the next four games are as follows flip seven flip seven is actually the one game on this entire list that I don't I don't know that much about all of these other games I've explored experienced and had been anticipating and excited for them to arrive for years if not longer in the case of things like Kingdom death flip 7 though is one of the games that West Todd one of my close friends uh told me was remarkable he asked me if ID tried it yet I said I hadn't and he said man it's one of the best games of the year you have to try it and I match up fairly closely with West he's got good taste in games and he likes weird classic Niche Indie style titles games that feel different from other games that you get off the shelf and onto the table and so if he says flip s's good flip s's sitting here on the list moving on we have dark Venture the adventure card game this is coming from a publisher who
uh has made a few in the dark a few games in the dark Venture series all of the artwork is hand done by the designer and creator of this uh along with that his other dark Venture games dark Venture Battle of the agents is one of the most unique uh well-designed indie games I have ever played it doesn't leave the space of being exactly what a weird quirky artist intended it to be and at the same time it doesn't uh overwhelm you with uh poor rules or weird quirky you know events and stances and abilities and you know subcategories of things that you have to keep in mind while you play it's a approachable highly highly enjoyable and stylistically thematically narratively weird and so this is the adventure card game this is a one to four player uh exactly what it says card game designed to bring you on a campaign to send you on a journey to tell a story and the weird the the world here is weird which means the story here is going to be weird the artwork's creepy and uh sort of heavy metalesque I think would be the way i' describe it would in uh the most wonderful away and I love both card games whether it's deck building or hand management or or or deck crafting they're one of my favorite subgenres of the board game space and on top of that I love a good Adventure so this has been on a shelf staring me dead in the eyes
for about three months now revive a game still in shrink but I have actually played this one this last year one of my good friends Dennis came down and this was his favorite game at the moment and one of his favorite games maybe of all time now he really really swears by this title I believe this is like a worker placement uh deck building hybrid as well if I if I'm if I'm if I'm recalling appropriately uh let's see here 500 years after mankinds know unlock machines and customize your board recruit followers that work well together I'd have to remember perfectly I remember enjoying it I remember being compelled by it I purchased a copy of it cuz I was excited to continue diving in and looking forward to maybe be meting him the next time he came up and visited which is happening in about a week so revive is here I don't know that it would have actually been on my permanent you know official top 10 from the last year but it certainly would have been on Dennis's and so kind of like flip 7 it's both here to commemorate and celebrate a friend and their Journey this last year and and also cuz it was good I just didn't get to to spend enough time with it and then finally the most recent addition to this list we have vagrant song Encore which just arrived right at the beginning of the year or maybe don't you know shoot the messenger might have arrived a few days after the beginning of the year had already happened I'm like January 4th 5th 6th something around around then I think I was late in letting them know my address so I do think it was arriving prior to to when I
actually got a copy of it though and vagor song is this beautiful maob over thee Garden Wall feeling campaign game and Encore is the next stage in that a a swelling of stages is a deeper uh number of of routes and variable Pathways you can go more characters to play more bosses to battle and more of this game that I've enjoyed a ton every time I've got it out and onto the table primarily one or two players I will admit at four players it can be a little bit overwhelming with the uh the AP that you experience so this is here and I'm super excited to play it when am I going to play it I don't know in 2025 though that's going to happen we're going to we're going to make room for it we're slowly elbowing our way in if you notice we're putting out some reliable regular content we're getting structured scheduled we're getting a consistent thematic posting schedule going which you guys don't know anything about yet but I am putting up similar videos on similar days of the week for instance this is a top 10 video or a list video on a Thursday sometimes maybe it's Wednesday I haven't narrow it down perfectly but gameplay videos should be coming out on Friday Kickstarter and crowdfunding project s on Tuesday cuz that's when the most of them launch Sunday is more about personal stuff conversations life updates weird quirky things that I discover around neuroscience and the Art of being a father and Monday Monday's rules teaching how to plays 10 you know top 10 tips quick start guides and then finally
we've got review videos that rotate on Wednesday or Thursday I have to figure out which day unlocking top 10 and rules and and and review videos in on so that's what we have I expect that over the course of the next year and hopefully over the course of the next 3 to six months each one of these games will have its chance to be in the spotlight whether it's us sitting down and doing a full dedicated review game plays how to play strategy guides or it's just that I on one game night ask someone to prep and we sit down for a little in the corner two player learn and teach and dive head first into all these titles I'm very excited to play each in every one of these and I don't want them to get lost in the mix of new exciting stuff that's coming out there's a lot of games that have had that happen and there's a lot of games that uh I still have in shrink on shelves downstairs that I've intended for the longest time to play this group of 10 this group of 10 is or are my top games from 2024 whether or not I actually played them in 2024 thanks for watching thanks for being here thanks for all the support that you all have been showing the channel recently whether it's subscribing whether it's uh becoming a member of this Channel or the patreon clicking on Amazon links that are down below for board games and camera equipment and links to other titles that help us generate a little bit of income for uh this uh uh scraping together uh
this this this this Scotch taped uh YouTube channel that I'm I'm trying my best to run and of course for all the comments all the messages all the emails and feedback and um I'm excited I'm really excited about 2025 and I'm enjoying making this content so with that thank you for being here thank you for watching whatever the case though whatever you do remember to do the important thing don't beat yourself up just cuz life is messy and you didn't get every game you hop to get to the table or every project you intended on getting done there's always tomorrow a new year is in some ways an arbitrary line in the calendar that people put to indicate they either suc succeeded or failed and in other ways it's a fresh opportunity a chance to start a new and a a great way to refocus and rededicate yourself but you also have mornings for that and evenings and hours and minutes you have books like the 5-second ru by Mel Robbins that indicate that in just a matter of time you could rededicate yourself so don't set arbitrary lines don't classify yourself as having succeeded or failed unless you really have done one of those two things and then what are you going to do from that point Focus take account of where you are set yourself in a meaningful and purposeful Direction and clean your room make your
bed work on yourself whatever the case though we'll see you next time bye
