Description

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a standalone game that takes place before the events of Gloomhaven. The game includes four new characters — Valrath Red Guard (tank, crowd control), Inox Hatchet (ranged damage), Human Voidwarden (support, mind control), and Quatryl Demolitionist (melee damage, obstacle manipulation) — that can also be used in the original Gloomhaven game.

The game also includes 16 monster types (including seven new standard monsters and three new bosses) and a new campaign with 25 scenarios that invites the heroes to investigate a case of mysterious disappearances within the city. Is it the work of Vermlings, or is something far more sinister going on?

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is aimed at a more casual audience to get people into the gameplay more quickly. All of the hard-to-organize cardboard map tiles have been removed, and instead players will play on the scenario book itself, which features new artwork unique to each scenario. The last barrier to entry — i.e., learning the game — has also been lowered through a simplified rule set and a five-scenario tutorial that will ease new players into the experience.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I want to spend more time in 2025 with a regular campaign group or even solo mode playing through all of these Campaign games that I've had piling up
  • my second resolution kind of ties into that and I think part of the the reason for both of these is that we are a board game channel we like to try to I know it's amazing but we like to play everything that comes out
  • my other resolution getting back into more regular role playing like that was my heart that you're on your own there that is where I came from
  • it is mares it's mares is one of my favorite games of all time yeah it it made it above Seasons or are we talking close that I don't know maresh is probably within my top 10
  • wow okay for 2025 is the year I've said it before privately on camera I don't really care so much about that although people have Emily in particular have pointed out reasons to do so like I don't care what I played and how well I did it sure but when we're going back and like she she said when I try to remember who I played with uhuh or where or when little things now I don't know if I'm going to put all that information in there but I'm going to try we'll see
  • I have a list of content that I want to make in 2025 and I need to just like keep myself accountable and have the audience keep me accountable
  • we want to evolve the channel we want to do different things uh will you see previews and round ones and stuff like that paid content sure you will got to keep the channel it's not going anywhere however I want to do more other stuff and it doesn't necessarily mean reviews I want to do some interesting Pieces Just on games or on a topic surrounding games
  • we want to keep a healthy work life balance
  • so we'd love to hear some feedback because we want to get more games to you we want to show you more games and sometimes that might mean just hitting go live and just doing it yeah so so be prepared buckle up it might be a wild ride
  • getting back to that work life balance I want to play some games where I'm not necessarily thinking about the project that we have to do for the channel but just to play a game
  • I want to try to open myself up to being you know I'm not going to name well I'll name drop a couple games a lerta game if Emily and Ryan goes hey there's a new lerta let's try this game I might try it The Great Library coming later what I might do is learn that game and play it with some other people because playing those games is intimidating and in of itself playing those games with you and Emily who are good at those games who love those games who are familiar with those games that's a whole another level of sort of intimidation
  • heavy games are games that Emily and I love to play but we'd like to make those experien is less intimidating
  • from a perspective of anybody that's playing with new players in 2025 and you're bringing new players in it's tough to turn off that part of your brain that's like I want to exploit every exploit here and I want to I see these Combos and I want to take advantage of them sometimes
  • make sure everyone has fun at the table

Quotes (from this video)
  • I find that when I play games solo, I really enjoy having a reason to come back to them over and over again. And those campaigns are one of the best ways to get me to come back and play a game.
  • Almost every single concern I had with the original Sleeping Gods was fixed in Distant Skies.
  • As of this recording, I've yet to find a game that provides a better sandbox adventure.
  • I just love how this game makes you feel clever as you find ways to defeat multiple threats in one turn.
  • Although the game may look cute, the puzzles in the scenarios are no joke.
  • Each scenario takes less than 20 minutes, so it's easy to get to the table as a solo player.
  • Arkham Horror, the card game, is by far the best narrative driven campaign on this list.
  • So many scenarios, I chuckle to myself on how clever a mechanic they used or a thematic tying that worked so well.
  • With the revised boxes coming out now, it is easier than ever to pick this one up and give it a try.
  • All of a sudden, Awaken Realms designed Dragon Eclipse, and now my dreams have come true.
  • I cannot get enough of the puzzly and tactical combat, which is the backbone of this game.
  • When you have the embers of a forsaken star expansion for Zia Legends of a drift system, this game becomes an epitome of a campaign sandbox game.
  • The joy of leveling up your ship, running away from the scoundrel and racing the merchant for fame never gets old in a universe that's always changing in an unexpected ways.
  • With the theme Lord of the Rings, the first thing that comes to mind is working together to defeat a common goal. That is exactly what Lord of the Rings the card game is about.
  • I will never tire with finding synergies between different heroes or different cards and continuously appreciating the scenario design and how it challenges the players.

  • This is episode two. Episode one already happened. Surprise.
  • It's down below in the video description. There is a playlist and you can find past and future episodes there.
  • I did it a long time ago and now I see people do it.
  • This game, however, since it came out in 2021, I think it's considered a old, busted, dead game.
  • This is the best dungeon crawler ever made.
  • It's like I feel like it feels like a band-aid solution made to like they were like play testing without it and then like they were like oh in dungeon crawlers people always like start getting really good
  • It's like I mean, it's succeeding at that, but yeah, it's just it's a frustrating mechanic.
  • For me, it's not such a big deal to replay a game if I wasn't streaming it and if it's just you and I playing in our home. But I always just think of that worst case scenario of like you have four buddies that that take the time away from their family, their life, their school, their kids or whatever they're doing to come over for game time or meet at a game store or go over to their house.
  • I don't know if that's like good game design. I think that's like it's very the opposite of respecting the players time, right?

Quotes (from this video)
  • Can't really judge a campaign game based off its like tutorial. That would be what every other YouTube reviewer does on the internet.
  • It's definitely handholdy, but it's like good for players getting into the game in general, not just new players, too.
  • Just get me the scene set and let's get to it.
  • The maps are like paper. They're like the same printing of like a rulebook page.
  • I love how I just have to like pull out a map, lay it down. There's still a lot of setup. I'm still fiddling around looking through. All they give you is baggies in this game to store stuff. It's like there's no insert. That's kind of cheap in that regards.
  • Yeah, it was a cool scenario. Yeah, definitely a neat scenario. Felt unique. I'm excited to see what kind of scenarios they come up with in the future.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • I also think they executed so well. And it's also insanely good. That's the thing. It's like it's not just like, oh this look at this like kind of gimmick that it's a legacy thing. Like no, it was really fun. So memorable
  • Uh number one is the Ark Nova. You probably knew this one was happening. Um Ark Nova won in 2021. Um, and uh, yeah, Arc Nova is so good.
  • Arc Nova is about running a zoo.
  • It's got this great kind of tableau engine building uh where you're going to be building enclosures, putting animals in them, which are, you know, the the different uh animals you're taking care of in your zoo.
  • And makes it um you know like you get more points through conservation efforts because again the track uh the appeal track has you know for every three spaces on the appeal track there's one conservation space. You are literally rewarded more heavily for doing conservation which I think is how it should be.
  • And that's the thing is like Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before. Sure. And I've always argued like you don't need to do anything new. Like you can just take things that already exist and put them into a really excellent package. And that's literally what Arcan Nova is.
  • Um, it's it's now number two. It wasn't number two recently, so it's very recently number two. Just passed up Peggandic Legacy. We'll see if it can catch Brass Birmingham.
  • Make sure to rate, talk in forums, upvote images, videos, all the different kind of stuff. Engage with BG because it really does change things like this, this list.
  • It is userdriven. It's like the hotness. It's like what's on the hotness? Whatever people are clicking on, BG doesn't choose any of that, right?
  • It's just most awesome resource we have for board gaming. We love taking a look at like the data to see like what you know what has captured people's interest

  • Battle Gold deck and private objectives — At setup, a battle gold deck is created; each player draws two cards, privately chooses one to keep, and the other is returned to the box; players have private objectives and receive a check mark if completed; this is resolved at the end of the scenario.
  • Element infusion and consumption — Players infuse elements onto an element board and later consume them to augment actions; elements cannot be infused and used in the same turn; monsters also infuse and consume elements; elements move through the strong/waning/inert columns and power up other abilities.
  • End of round element advancement — After each round, if elements exist, they move to the next column on the element board; elements can be consumed to power up other abilities.
  • Monster spawning — When new monsters are spawned, they appear on target spaces; the scenario may spawn normal and elite versions of enemies (e.g., zealots) and additional zealots based on player count.
  • Objectives as enemies and movement rules — Objectives are treated similarly to enemies in that they can be attacked, but they are not obstacles and cannot receive conditions; they cannot be affected by push/pull or other effects except jumping; they block movement but can be jumped over.

Pros
  • Introduces meaningful new tokens (money, treasure, traps) that expand loot and map interaction.
  • Door and room layout mechanics add structural variety to scenarios.
  • Area effects and push/pull introduce tactical depth to positioning.
  • Disarm provides a defensive option against incoming damage.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area effects — Some cards have area effects that target red hexes; targets within range can be damaged, with line of sight considered and friendly figures unaffected.
  • Basic actions and cards — In addition to card abilities, some cards show basic action icons (attack and move) that can be used as top or bottom actions, ignoring other card effects.
  • Damage cancellation — You can cancel incoming damage by placing one card from your hand, or two cards from your discard pile, into your lost pile.
  • Disarm — Disarm prevents the affected figure from performing any attack abilities; the disarm token is removed at the end of the figure's next full turn.
  • Doors and room layout — Doors separate rooms; opening a door reveals a new room and triggers the setup of monsters in that room; door spaces are walls for line of sight until opened.
  • Gold and loot tracking across attempts — Gold tokens carry between attempts, and players may not share gold; looted money tokens are returned to the supply after a scenario.
  • Item shop and gear economy — After each scenario, players visit a shop to buy items with gold; items have types (head, body, feet, hand) and can be equipped up to certain limits; items may be spent, consumed, or persistent.
  • Looting money tokens — Money tokens drop when monsters die; you must end your turn on a space with a money token to loot it; tokens are collected onto your character mat and are worth two gold each.
  • Monster behavior and modifier decks — Monsters have a modifier deck that can adjust their actions; revealed monster cards may modify move/attack values and require drawing from a modifier deck.
  • Push and pull — Push moves the target away from you; pull draws the target toward you; both require accounting for line of sight and obstacles; can interact with traps.
  • Room reveal and focus — Two separate rooms exist; revealing a room changes which monsters are activated, with focus and initiative interacting with player actions.
  • Saving and progressing to next scenario — You can save your game or continue to the next scenario; after completing a scenario you add a sticker to the map and record gold in character sheets; you also unlock the next scenario's rules and setup.
  • Simultaneous Reveal — Two separate rooms exist; revealing a room changes which monsters are activated, with focus and initiative interacting with player actions.
  • traps — Trap tokens exist on the board; if a monster or figure enters a trap space, it can incur damage; traps influence movement and focus.
  • Treasure tiles and treasure index — Treasure tiles can be looted like money tokens; after looting, you check the treasure index in the gloom haven glossary to determine rewards.

Quotes (from this video)
  • In the game Forest Shuffle, many of the cards in the game have two cards on the same face.
  • One side of the sleeved card is for you and the other side is the foe that you need to defeat.
  • This might be a stretch because you don't quite play or use these as multi-use cards, but from a design perspective, the layout of the outer rim cards is a really nice way to integrate the stories, encounters, and missions into the game.
  • two event two cards into the same single card face
  • the card layout really serves that goal
