Description

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features 180 birds illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

—description from the publisher

From the 7th printing on, the base game box includes Wingspan: Swift-Start Promo Pack.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I really liked how uh bombastic the cards get in allowing you to do, you know, things on your own board and how to explore it.
  • Uh especially with the military aspect and, you know, creating or increasing the military might that you have to um impose on other opponents and when these battles really made our games uh come down to these in addition to uh the just straight-up deck building and um you know, playing cards from your hands and worker placement aspects that has a lot of good mechanisms that I enjoy.
  • This game I really enjoyed for the theme. I like the the thematic story and the arc of this game where the plague gets pretty bad uh during the game, uh but then slowly as you start to unders- or, you know, uh combat the disease, you start to uh rely less and less on taking out the plague and more and more coming back to repopulate Messina.
  • it's still a game that is is tough for me to play sometimes just because um you know, I if I think I know what is going on with the strategy of this game and and and you know, the the more that I have to learn from it and so it kind of deterred me from playing it more
  • But yeah, uh as as bland as it looks, it's actually really fun order fulfillment game.
  • Um it's not as deep or complex as Magic or Hearthstone or some of the other card games are, but it probably will get to that point at some at some point.
  • I wish that the meta game was more diverse. It hasn't been so since the start of the game.
  • And Wingspan for me, while it's a masterpiece of of a design um in my opinion, I really was really drawn to all of the birds and the individuality of these cards.
  • It does take a while to play, I think if you're playing with new people, which was kind of a deterrent for me for bringing this game out more often.
  • So, this is one of the latest Uwe Rosenberg games back in 2022, one of my favorite games. One for the solo version of this game. I think that is the peak way to play this game.
  • And so I I hold it in high esteem.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Remember, it's only a game.
  • But yeah, all in all, this is a solid Euro. You know, I think Tindala was a bit of a dud, you know, a bit of a mess. This one feels good.
  • Don't do that. Oh my god. I mean, if I if I find out you're going to teach it by regurgitating the rule book verbatim, and I know this before we sit down, I'm leaving.
  • Pick your players wisely.
  • Seriously, if you feel you need to teach it by reading the rule book for baton, then you haven't learned the game well enough yourself.
  • Don't try to teach me a strategy for how to win it, though. I saw the rules and I thought, well, okay, what happens if I focus more on guests rather than care about the barrels or something?
  • The more you do it and the more you learn from the mistakes, the better a teacher you'll be.

  • DM explains who's our monarch level patron on the discord server suggested I don't have too many like spooky themed board games.
  • You can actually get like two or three of them and have them all flitting multiplying flitting between so you're going to be activating five power actions and flooding them around and that takes a while to get going.
  • The more I started making videos about board games the more I thought like oh I should really it's really a waste if I open this without anybody on you know watching me on camera open it and so I better save this for an unboxing and then I just kind of found out unboxing videos aren't all that interesting to people.
  • The spirits are fickle with their their information it comes and goes right yes we only get we only get impressions just the the spirits waft in and out it's not like it's not like they're with us all the time.
  • My ghost so there's um there's a there's a game uh on Jack box who makes a bunch of sort of uh digital party games and one of them is called trivia murder party.
  • The most unfriendly thing I remember about Zardoz is the Sean Connery mankini oh my gosh and for some reason like I don't know movie dudes are all into waxing themselves these days.
  • The tucking engine suffers from the same outcome where you just once you get it set up your best move is by far just just a tuck yeah because it's points.
  • And then Shannio if you remember Shanio he was with me opening up that whole horde of eagle Griffin games a few weeks ago Shanio is going to be on the stream and we're going to play Halatau together because I gave him a choice I said this one's about brewing he goes that one guy he used to enjoy beer quite a bit I think and he's sort of abstained so maybe he can live vicariously through a game about growing hops for beer.
  • The answer nobody got it and it doesn't it's cropped poorly but Barbarossa under falling skies categories B-U-S Bus is the name of the game and I can hear you all collectively groaning through the chat window that's what it was I was going for Bus.
  • It's going to be about the most fail I could pack into two and a half hours.
  • If you want to see just a complete slow motion train wreck, that's the stream to watch.
  • David will be murdered, we don't know how it's gonna happen.
  • Call me maybe, which is a reference to Carly Rae Jepsen's song, a fellow Canadian.
  • The AI is, I mean, there's a couple of different difficulties, I'd say the harder AI is, you know, it'll definitely give you a run for your money for sure.
  • The player picker 9000 is so advanced, it actually is like light years ahead of what YouTube is capable of.
  • It's a complete bloodbath, an absolute slaughter.
  • The hunter mechanic can be highly random and ineffective if unlucky.
  • The spirits are fickle with their information, it comes and goes.
  • The spirits will commune and we'll let us know how you're going, the manner in which you're going to meet your untimely demise.
  • I've got my lights off in here and it's downright spooky, isn't it?
  • So there's there's a bird called a bird called a magpie that tends to steal stuff from things.
  • And unfortunately this magpie comes by to take a berry, but it's got a poisonous berry, oh, it drops it in the cereal bowl.
  • I've got no act break to entertain you with except to maybe tell you about Uwe Rosenberg month.

Pros
  • Can populate quickly with blue cubes.
  • Mutation can lead to instant promotion.
  • Species can be strengthened through promotion.
  • Populating can help close the score gap.
  • Gaining a foothold on the board is possible.
Cons
  • Player can be pushed off islands, limiting expansion.
  • AI actions can be longer than player actions.
  • Events can be detrimental, causing loss of progress.
  • Competition for spots can lead to creatures becoming 'zombies'.
  • Losing contests can result in losing points.
  • Some actions can be difficult to execute due to biome limitations or existing species.
Thematic elements
  • Evolution of species
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Combat/Competition — Players compete for spots in biomes, with contests often based on colored cubes (red, green, or yellow) depending on the situation. Losing a contest can lead to a creature becoming a 'zombie'.
  • Dispersal — Larval dispersal allows players to move new species across the board, with dispersal points determined by blue cubes. Airborne dispersal is also possible with white cubes.
  • Mutagen roll — A dice roll that determines the maximum number of organs a species can have. Exceeding this limit forces players to cull organs or lose mutations.
  • Mutation — Players can mutate their species, which involves taking a cube and potentially adding it to their species, leading to instant promotion.
  • Pheromone completion — Two halves of a pheromone come together to create a completed pheromone, which can award points and provide protection against certain events.
  • Population/Colonization — Players populate biomes with their species, with the number of new creeples determined by blue cubes. The placement rules involve adjacent environments and potential competition.
  • promotion — Actions like mutation can lead to instant promotion, where components are added to a species, potentially completing pheromones and gaining victory points.
  • Speciation — This mechanic is triggered by a dice roll and allows a player to create a new species, often from a 'sacrificial mother' species.
  • Zombie species — A species that is effectively out of the game, often resulting from losing a combat or being unable to find a habitable space. It can still count towards a budget for buying cards.

Pros

  • Smooth gameplay.
  • Additional complexity from cave cards and the Dragon Guild.
  • Solo play is easier and better than in Wingspan.
  • Decision space is improved, allowing cards to be played faster.
  • Straightforward resource gathering without dice randomness.
  • Neat two-card interactions with caves and dragons.
  • Variety in gameplay and tactical strategy.

  • Reskinning of Wingspan, especially with a theme not grounded in real life.
  • Polarizing theme.
  • Strategy can feel linear, with a dominant strategy of filling rows quickly.
  • Lacking diversity in decision spaces and strategy.
  • Takes a long time to get things going in rows.
  • Playing cave cards before dragon cards feels like extra, clunky effort.
  • Resource randomness is not dynamic or robust enough.
  • The Dragon Guild track is a simple track rather than objective cards.
  • The game does not offer enough differentiation from Wingspan to warrant a spot on the shelf for owners of Wingspan and its expansions.

  • think of this as a replacement to the objective cards from wingspan.
  • for some they mentioned that they did not like the reskinning of wingspan especially with a theme that is not grounded in real life the theme of worm span is definitely polarizing in the community for with some enjoying it and some who don't.
  • unfortunately the answer for me is no especially since I own the expansions to wingspan all of them in fact and with that all culminating together I feel like it offers the same complexity as worms span does albeit with some differences here and there.
  • I am more drawn to the theme of birds which I think does help me feel grounded in wingspan.
  • because I think I also enjoy the more of a Slow Burn at the beginning of wingspan Having Eight actions to build up your engine slowly and having it becoming increasingly tighter as you finish the game with less actions and then firing off those big engine combos at the end of course worms span felt the same throughout despite the increasing engine building.

  • This is the people's choice.
  • the highest ranked Golden Geek Game of the Year winners.
  • the consensus overall favorites of all time.
  • It's just like that perfect blend of like fun game mechanisms, uh great art to help sell it, a unique theme that we hadn't really seen at that time.
  • It really that's I think one of the infinite exploration.
  • This is a game of of woodland might and right.
  • It's just a complete package.
  • Gloom Haven is a classic.
  • This was a phenomena like it like we've all played Pandemic for many of us, very much us included. Uh it was our gateway game into the hobby and now like what legacy game? What do you you're ripping up cards the gate?
  • Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before.
  • It's living and breathing and and things are shifting all the time based on who's playing what, who's clicking on what, how people rate games and stuff.
  • It's just most awesome resource we have for board
  • This is Pandemic Legacy season 1, which won in 2015.
  • Pandemic Legacy season 1 was this phenomena like it like we've all played Pandemic for many of us, very much us included. Uh it was our gateway game into the hobby and now like what legacy game? What do you you're ripping up cards the gate?
  • it was it was cool, man. It was a whole event. Yeah, it really was massive because like you said, it'd be hard for something like that to happen again
  • But there was like one maybe two and that was kind of it. But you're also taking, right? So yeah, by Rob Davio. But you're also taking one of the most popular to this day games of all time, Pandemic. Yes. And then giving it this kind of treatment.
  • I also think they executed so well. And it's also insanely good. That's the thing. It's like it's not just like, oh this look at this like kind of gimmick that it's a legacy thing. Like no, it was really fun. So memorable
  • Uh number one is the Ark Nova. You probably knew this one was happening. Um Ark Nova won in 2021. Um, and uh, yeah, Arc Nova is so good.
  • Arc Nova is about running a zoo.
  • It's got this great kind of tableau engine building uh where you're going to be building enclosures, putting animals in them, which are, you know, the the different uh animals you're taking care of in your zoo.
  • And makes it um you know like you get more points through conservation efforts because again the track uh the appeal track has you know for every three spaces on the appeal track there's one conservation space. You are literally rewarded more heavily for doing conservation which I think is how it should be.
  • And that's the thing is like Ark Nova doesn't do anything new per se in terms like there's not like a new mechanic that no one's ever seen before. Sure. And I've always argued like you don't need to do anything new. Like you can just take things that already exist and put them into a really excellent package. And that's literally what Arcan Nova is.
  • Um, it's it's now number two. It wasn't number two recently, so it's very recently number two. Just passed up Peggandic Legacy. We'll see if it can catch Brass Birmingham.
  • Make sure to rate, talk in forums, upvote images, videos, all the different kind of stuff. Engage with BG because it really does change things like this, this list.
  • It is userdriven. It's like the hotness. It's like what's on the hotness? Whatever people are clicking on, BG doesn't choose any of that, right?
  • It's just most awesome resource we have for board gaming. We love taking a look at like the data to see like what you know what has captured people's interest

  • Downtime is horrendous due to lack of player interaction and engagement.
  • The game doesn't do anything significantly better than Wingspan.

  • I think they have distilled it too much to the level that the fun for me and attention is not there.
  • It's very meh for me. It's like 4.5, five-ish. It's just like just uh.

  • For me it's just like, it's too light, not giving me the tension and interesting fun stuff I guess from Wingspan and Worms Span.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I am playing the solo game against the Norta. There are lots of levels of difficulty.
  • If I make any mistakes, they'll be corrected there.
  • Massive thanks to Stone My Games for sponsoring this video and for wanting me to do anything in the first place really.
  • So, this is my ocean board. We'll take the first turn. We take a closer look at the ocean board.
  • Your first diver to each site will get a special bonus as well.
  • So the blue lantern fish, this costs me cards instead of eggs. So, I'd have to discard two cards from my hand, but I would get four cards.
  • So now there's a fish in there. So indirectly it will get me a card when I go diving in that section.
  • So, it's really easy just like all the stuff for Nortimr can be. It's winning. That might be difficult.
  • So, I've had another card there down into Midnight. And we have our glass head grenadier down here. So, I get to draw a third card.
  • As soon as three youngs share a space, they turn into a school for the rest of the game and they're worth more points.
  • So, that's a pretty good activation there. Five eggs in one go. Just need to now be able to hatch.
  • So, for week two, every two eggs is worth three points. I have 2 4 6 8 9. So, that's going to give me four * 3 12 points.
  • So, last let's Yeah, let's hatch some things.
  • The person who got the most points from the achievement gets three extra points.
  • And on top of that, the huge deck of fish. I think it's like 125 in the base game. So, tons and tons you're not going to see, especially if you're playing solo.

  • The dive action is one of the two core actions you can take in the game. And you'll probably take this about 50% of all the actions that you take.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is Finsspan by Stonemire Games.
  • We've actually, surprisingly enough, enjoyed this quite a lot.
  • It was just neater and a little bit cleaner. Little bit cleaner. A little bit more simplistic.
  • And I got to be honest, like the artwork, this is more my artwork. I love the water. I like to go swimming. I like sea creatures and I like the color blue.
  • This is the one issue I have with this game. I sometimes have so many cards and none of them set up in a way that I would like that benefits me.
  • It's going to be really, really tight.
  • I can't believe you won.
  • Get out and play some games.
