How this game feels to play
Description

Zombicide is a collaborative game in which players take the role of a survivor – each with unique abilities – and harness both their skills and the power of teamwork against the hordes of unthinking undead! Zombies are predictable, stupid but deadly, controlled by simple rules and a deck of cards. Unfortunately for you, there are a LOT more zombies than you have bullets.

Find weapons, kill zombies. The more zombies you kill, the more skilled you get; the more skilled you get, the more zombies appear. The only way out is zombicide!

Play ten scenarios on different maps made from the included modular map tiles, download new scenarios from the designer's website, or create your own!

This is just a great game for zombie lovers!

Integrates with:

Zombicide Season 2: Prison Outbreak
Zombicide Season 3: Rue Morgue

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, baseball highlights 20 45. So, I kind of want to start testing some things and I think I'm going to try something real simple like a nice little playthrough with this game and um because you could play it solo and you know each game takes about four to seven minutes to play.
  • And, you know, not the most high high high high quality game in the world, but as far as fun, I mean, isn't that what it's all about?
  • I'll tell you, Stonemaier Games. Dear God, that guy just he's special. He really is. Really is special. Special dude. Just knows what he's doing.
  • I can't even get rid of Star of Aaros because that piece of garbage is You got to have the 1.5. You know, they ruined they ruin any value of the the old game. If you ever want to get rid of the old game, it's it's completely useless because they had to come out with 1.5 version.
  • All I want is just one more championship to make up for that because they were robbed with the Steelers which was the what they which they call the most crooked game ever.

  • I cannot do it. Um, and it is a great Sony camera.
  • It's just filled with miscellaneous everything. It is a surprise lot.
  • I mean you can resell all this stuff. That's what I'm trying to tell you.
  • It is just a mishmash box of stuff and just I don't care what you bid, just take it, make some money off of it, sell it individually, whatever you want to do with it.
  • this is going to be a pain in the ass to pick up.
  • It is like having your own built-in arcade and it is fantastic.
  • It is going to be packed with almost $1,000 worth of war gaming uh war games.
  • I painted a majority of this. This is some of the better stuff that I've done.
  • I'm not a big fan of Eric Lang.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I always knew that this was a nasty dirty business. You have people that are very introverted that are really not outgoing people and you give them a little bit of power and they become they become monsters. You know, you know, power in the hands of the weak sometimes is the greatest thing that can ever be.
  • You run a [ __ ] board game channel, okay? Maybe somebody will recognize you on the street every once in a while, but you're not making million-dollar movies in the in in Hollywood. Okay? You're doing good. You're making a living. God bless you. Okay? You employ a bunch of people, God bless you, okay? But you're not changing the world, okay?
  • And it's it's it's just like it's it's and I I I [clears throat] turned to my friend and I said, 'You want to know something?' I always knew [snorts] that this was a nasty dirty business.
  • It goes by quick. It goes by so super fast. I mean, we were just talking about that today, how quickly. Um my wife was showing my mother-in-law some pictures of uh some of her cousins and now they have kids that are working and I go, 'Really?' They go, 'Yeah, don't stand still.' like, 'Oh god, it's been that long.' You know, in a blink of an eye, it's gone. It's gone.

  • I think we're gonna get killed. I really do.
  • I just want that one more before I, you know, that that that kind of redemption before, you know, I take my dirt nap.
  • I don't want to sound like a defeist, which I do sound that way, but I just know how these things play out.
  • Uh, you know, everything's fixed anyways.
  • The minute the minute you legalize something, it opens the door to real big corruption.
  • I swear. Most unpolable thing ever.
  • I'll throw myself in front of a coyote before I let these dogs get hurt. I don't care. It'll be a good death.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Sky Team is absolutely phenomenal.
  • This game is just awesome.
  • the gameplay itself is is super fun.
  • this was a super big surprise for me because I mean I never played Whistle Stop.
  • Second edition because it's just improved in literally every way.
  • This one is just absolutely fantastic.
  • This one is the simplest of the three games.
  • this one does a really cool system of like you actually lose.
  • It just they knew they knew the assignment with their writing.
  • this was I mean I know you like S. Corey if it wasn't so long. I think we both kind of settle on this one in current state being the best of the three.
  • it's a 7.3. I could have sworn this was at like a four at one point, which is fair cuz I think uh Portal Games kind of shat the bed on the game.
  • the actual gameplay of this one is one of the best uh cooperative survival games out there.
  • Awesome thing of like a good example is oh hey you actually when you're exploring you come across a shack that has some preserved food
  • this one remastered, they they condensed it down
  • The expansions for it um, Well, because now it's all cross compatible.
  • it literally is role to resolve. like you can be as strategic and tactile as you want. If dice if you roll blanks, you roll blanks and [censored] off.
  • This one's absolutely fantastic.
  • It's actually a digestible campaign game. Like you can finish it and feel satisfied
  • My only hiccup with this is its expansion. while as good as an expansion is a continuation of the main campaign story except you don't play with the characters that you were playing with.
  • The Cloud Spire one, I think you'll like though.
  • This game is literally luck the game
  • the Tangle Woods ones, I'm like, do I hate this game?

Quotes (from this video)
  • this one is, Hoplam is solo.
  • the Pandora's Ruin uh brought in several different little things like more scions and stuff like that. But the biggest thing was the Mercury Boots campaign mode, that new campaign mode, because it switch it switched from where instead of each act lasting 12 weeks, it made each act last six weeks.
  • this is my my second uh chip theory game in this segment, but you get that same deal. Chips, neoprene, plastic.
  • But now each act probably takes about two or so with the Mercury deal. And that was like one of the smartest things. They listened to their their their, fans or whatever and they added that and it was the perfect addition cuz it made it a nice swallowable uh deal at that point.
  • that expansion saved this game because if I had to go through it again with uh, you know, four hours per act, I it's it's miserable, dude.
  • four hours of die rolling.
  • I just try not to think about how much I spent.
  • It's so much fun, dude.
  • The amount of content definitely helps with how many heroes and villains there are.
  • And the plug-and-play nature of just being like, here's who we're going to throw in.
  • The system of you know this timeline element of like playing cards after other players to trigger different effects is such a cool thing.
  • It's just that plugandplay nature makes this one just so much fun to play.
  • I've had a blast with it.
  • the games still super fun.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Worst to best, no filler, and we're calling it on each one.
  • Every other game we're going to talk about today executes that skeleton better.
  • Completeness is not the same as excellence, especially when the underlying framework has been surpassed in every meaningful category since.
  • This is where the fantasy line really proved itself because instead of just re-skinning Black Plague, the design team took the system and made it harder.
  • The most mechanically streamlined Zombicide base game in the franchise's history and that streamlining cuts in multiple directions at once.
  • This is also the most difficult Zombicide game in the franchise. Brutal in every sense of the word.
  • The definitive modern Zombicide experience.
  • A dynamic power escalation arc and the feedback loop between growing stronger and becoming a bigger target captures the tone of the source material more precisely than anything season 1 through 3 ever achieved.
  • Black Plague is where the Zombicide formula reached its fullest expression for the widest range of players.
  • Creates a layer of priority management that was completely absent from every original era Zombicide game.
  • If you're new to Zombicide and you only buy one box ever, this is the one.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The noise is not organic. It's built.
  • The information environment around a game's launch is structurally compromised in ways most hobbyists have absolutely no idea about.
  • The hotness does not measure quality. It does not measure how many people are enjoying a game. It measures activity, page views and forum thread activity.
  • Previews are universally positive in tone because the entire purpose of a preview from the publisher's perspective is to generate excitement.
  • A preview is an advertisement that does not always announce itself as one.
  • The structural pressure that creates on the honesty of reviews.
  • The incentive to be positive is not always conscious. It rarely manifests as someone deciding to lie. It shows up in softer ways.
  • Publishers are not stupid. When they choose which creators to send games to, they tend to gravitate toward people who covered their previous games positively.
  • Crowdfunding campaigns are not just fundraising tools, they're psychological environments specifically designed to manufacture urgency and suppress rational decision-making.
  • It's behavioral economics weaponized against your wallet, and it works on us, too.
  • The FTC has actually noticed all of this, by the way.
  • There are documented cases of publishers going after creators who gave their game a negative review, including approaching the creator's sponsors to pressure them into removing content.
  • The board game content space has been slow to comply. Disclosure practices vary wildly.
  • The review copy is a permanent gift. Yeah, this one is wild when you actually think about it.
  • The game did not fail. The hype around it failed the game.
  • The hype machine is not going away. The economic incentives that drive it are too strong.
  • Once you can see the machinery behind the curtain, the magic stops working.
  • The publishers who rely most heavily on these tactics are not creating the hobbies best games. They're creating the hobbies most marketed games.

  • When I was a child, the board game industry was also dominated by huge hulking giants, epic, violent, plastic adventures aimed squarely at children.
  • Unlike the dinosaurs before them, this entire genre of games which felt like everything to children like me went extinct.
  • What they shared wasn't mechanisms, it was ambition. They were huge, packed with toyetic miniatures and terrain and aimed squarely at kids.
  • Meaningful decisions. And this is where the genre struggles.
  • The reality is that epic plastic adventure games for kids represented a very specific cultural moment, and one which we can never get back.
  • Grab a block of amber, extract a little dino DNA, and rewild the board game ecosystem with new epic adventures for kids.

Pros
  • Plays a lot like the Marvel Zombies game with definite differences.
  • Standalone box that can be played independently.
  • Cross-compatible with the other Marvel Zombies box to expand gameplay.
  • Interesting terrain pieces like elevators and smashable windows.
  • Power system allows for enhanced actions and abilities.
  • Rescuing bystanders is a key element, contrasting with eating them in the base game.
  • Zombie heroes are cool to encounter.
  • Juggernaut is a fun and challenging zombie hero.
  • All heroes feel very powerful, making actions feel super heroic.
  • Scales up difficulty with more zombies and tougher zombie heroes.
  • Offers a lot of replayability with multiple scenarios and campaigns.
  • Great solo game, easy to manage.
  • Good puzzle quality similar to Pandemic or Forbidden Island/Desert.
  • Everything is good quality and fun.
  • Feels really balanced.
  • Can play whatever difficulty mission you want.
Cons
  • If you had to choose one, the base Marvel Zombies game might be preferred due to the 'hunger' dynamic.
  • Some repetition between the two main boxes, suggesting no need to buy both if money is an issue.
  • Other expansions like Fantastic Four, Thanos, Red Skull, and Sinister Six may not be as essential unless seeking specific heroes or unique mechanics.
Thematic elements
  • Non-zombie superheroes fighting against a bunch of zombies, including some zombie heroes.
  • The school for gifted youngsters, Xavier's home
Comparison games
  • Marvel Zombies (base game)
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Green Horde
  • Black Plague
  • Stranger Things
  • Pandemic Clone Wars
  • Pandemic Warcraft
  • Horrified
  • Forbidden Island
  • Forbidden Desert
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Bystander interaction — In this case you rescuing these bystanders and all the bystanders are going to be targeted... if there's any zombies or whatever in your Zone each of them is going to do one damage... if any bystander is killed anywhere on the board then all the heroes will lose one power and then they will have to also discard one of their two traits... if you were to take a wound as the hero to prevent that wound you could discard the bystander.
  • multi-level board — There is some interesting terrain ideas here... this is an elevator here that you can call... you have kind of two separate parts... you have some stairs on a couple of levels so you have kind of two floors there... when you're on like this floor out here all of the zombies are moving and activating and spawning... and then once you move up to this level this you know other level down here that you were on kind of deactivates.
  • power system — Your power is going to start off at zero every round you're going to gain one power automatically you can take an action to power up which will you'll increase your power by two at that point and of course it caps out at four. Power can be spent to add dice to attacks or activate abilities and traits.
  • Window smashing — You can also open and close windows but if the zombies are in such a way that it's quicker for them to get to you through a window then they will smash that window and then there's some rules for how they're going to come through that window to get to you.
  • Zombie heroes — You're fighting against some uh zombie Heroes. Some of the X-Men have already been turned into zombies... here is dark Phoenix Jean Gray who has been turned into a zombie... here is a non-zombie Magneto... here is a zombie Iceman... zombie Juggernaut.

Quotes (from this video)
  • this game plays a lot like the Marvel Zombies game but with some definite differences as you're playing the heroes
  • you're actually non zombie superheroes fighting against a bunch of zombies who are who are all the same person which is multim which is kind of fun and you're also fighting against some uh zombie Heroes
  • Juggernaut is awesome probably my favorite one and you can see his toughness scales quite High cuz that's seven hits you got to do it once remember cuz in Zombie side you got it's to All or Nothing so as you level up you know your characters and you know this you know you get to the higher colors there not only are you you know drawing these cards and the spawn cards and you know things are getting crazier and crazier but Juggernaut is basically leveling up with you in a way and so he can be quite uh quite difficult to take out
  • it feels like that everybody's really powerful
  • all the heroes feel very powerful which is cool especially when you kind of like power up or you get other cars that let you power up for free or get bonuses to that and you want to really get at the traits and stuff so when you do like these huge moves that can just wipe out like whole zones of zombies and stuff um they feel very superh heroic right away out the gate
  • it's a co-op game but you can solo it very easy
  • it's not too much on the brain but it is not too light either so and it's got the nice puzzle quality of like a pandemic or a uh Forbidden Island Forbidden Desert you know those kind of style games

Quotes (from this video)
  • My son is going to be excellent at those type of games we're talking chat we're talking uh yeah Chinatown we're talking bear raid we've already got strong negotiations skills.
  • I have a very compelling reason that it was my least favorite we only had the base game we had no Kickstarter extras we had no expansions we had no extra missions no extra cards no extra enemies.
  • It's just not singing songs.
  • If I'm sitting at an angle to the board where I can't read the names on the board very easily I struggle a lot.
  • My ability to recall names limited my ability to recall pictures stories and uh tell Tales is heightened because the way that words process in my brain unlike your brain is you use you you probably use the more if if you have a um non-dyslexic brain uh that means the part of the brain that deals with uh numbers memory um short-term and long-term recall uh deals with kind of analytics uh that part of the brain is the part of the brain that learned language for you.
  • My brain is the part of the brain that handles visuals is the part of the brain that learned language for me which means I cannot spell at all it affects your uh short-term kind of immediate recall but I can tell stories and I can see pictures and I can remember nicknames and all of that's kind of its own unique uh wonderful superpower.
  • Terraforming Mars best game out of these 6 and arguably the best with a newborn.
  • The important thing always find a scapegoat.
  • I know I'm going to think of it the moment I turn this off.

Quotes (from this video)
  • if you love a hobby like I love TableTop wargaming and the Miniatures hobby then you have a tendency to think about it a lot
  • reasonable people can have differing opinions about wargaming it's just a game
  • for me 3D terrain is kind of important I think
  • tabletop wargaming is all about immersion and how things look in my mind
  • nearly no lore is actually needed for a Miniatures war game
  • the compelling lore is one of the main reasons that Warhammer games continue to do as well as they do
  • frankly it doesn't really work for smaller Indie Games
  • there should be two versions of Warhammer 40K and two versions of agis Sigmar for each game there should be a version for tournament play and then there should also be a version that's fun
  • the constant search for balance doesn't really make for a fun game rule set feeling comfortable with stable rules and enjoying themselves is what they want
  • round bases are better looking than Square bases but integrated bases those weirdly shaped bits of ground between the Mini's feet usually on some companies metal Miniatures but sometimes they're also on resin ones and even plastic as well um those are the worst

Quotes (from this video)
  • hey everyone welcome to watch it played
  • this game is on Kickstarter at the time of this recording
  • zombiie side black plague was previously released which brought their core zombie side experience to a fantasy era
  • black plague and green horde are set in the same universe and timeline and are fully compatible as well as being entirely stand alone
  • every door is locked in the zombicide universe right there's no keys there's no handles you just have to bash every single door in
  • this game we have to be conscious of a lot of the actions you perform can create noise
  • zombie Side Green horde introduces the concept of a horde
  • hitting harder this time dealing three damage so that means in one hit it could kill a hero
  • these Hedges are a new characteristic found on many of the tiles in Zombie Side Green horde
  • The Catapult doesn't make noise
  • what happens when I get further than that I'm glad you asked pep because in this version of the game there's now an ultra red mode
  • this is unbelievable The Necromancer has truly summoned an army for us to deal with
  • if there's ever six spawn tokens on the map you automatically lose
  • hopefully that gives you a pretty good overview not just of how zombie side works but specifically zombie Side Green horde

  • The rules of this game share several similarities to the original zombie side which we have an instructional video for so if you'd like to learn how to play this game you can get a very good idea of it by watching that how to play video which I'll put a link to in the description of this video but there are some key differences I'm going to summarize those for you here as well as show you the components that come with this game

Quotes (from this video)
  • so Ned he could grab he could do a search for free
  • so Ned has now got the scope we'll put the scope here um scope is maybe an item yeah it is so we're going to have to toss something out here guys I think the can food is going to have to go unfortunately
  • he's going to attack with that shotgun he's going to get to roll two dice it's going to be a four plus and I'm going to put the noise token now just as a reminder because that thing is definitely going to make some noise
  • so that was an excellent suggestion there I think so uh I hope you guys uh caught that I did that and why we did that and if not then hopefully it'll become clear in a moment
  • she's going to move to the South and she's going to use that Molotov cocktail now the deal with this is that it has a range of zero or one so she's able to drop it into this Zone here and basically it kills everything there so this is going to definitely up her experience
  • thank you guys together we make a good team mainly you guys together make a good team and I'm just here slowing you down
  • so that was a brilliant brilliant idea and it would have been a terrible waste not to use that to make noise uh in that room
  • Doug as uh We've nicknamed him here is in trouble
  • Harvey just was a beast he was a beast in the game he went down fighting in the end but he had done his job and I think Doug may just rise to that same occasion we'll see
  • swinging the Crowbar at the first runner remember we need to see a four plus here not quite a four plus
  • people are saying why aren't we using the shotgun the problem is if you shoot remember you shoot within the same Zone and there's survivors there you have to hit the survivors first so at least we had one hit there that's good
  • we've got Luke with us here and uh I'm seeing some suggestions here that Luke should maybe Luke you watch here in the chat and you can see people are saying hello to you here people are saying Lucky Luke they're calling out for Luke we're going to have nice to Luke yes it is time to give Luke some dice
  • now uh when you shoot with a weapon even if it's two weapons uh you only put one noise down actually the you got to think of it sort of as the noise all happening at once
  • I'm being told by UK Dan to reload and give Luke the dice again so so I think that's that's probably right
  • so that means there's a total of four noise in this location and it's time to move on to the next uh person

  • shot gun is very good
  • beware the pan you aren't kidding worm food Beware of that Pan
  • what you thought was a pile of Rags is in fact a zombie
  • there's a there's an attack priority in the chaos of this zombie fight when you shoot with a ranged weapon you cannot pick your target you have to follow the rules uh the targeting order rules which means attack any survivors first
  • critical Miss he nearly shot his foot off

Pros
  • Improved survivor dashboard with better organization and tracking for XP, abilities, wounds, and items.
  • Ranged combat rules are more forgiving, allowing hits on zombies even with survivors present.
  • Armor and shields provide a way to mitigate damage.
  • The Necromancer adds a new threat and loss condition.
  • Secret vaults offer strategic movement options.
  • Dragon Bile provides a powerful area-of-effect option.
Cons
  • Missed ranged shots can still hit friendly characters.
  • The Necromancer can lead to an immediate loss condition if it escapes with too many active spawn tokens.
Thematic elements
  • fighting off a horde of relentless zombies
  • fantasy
Comparison games
  • Zombie side
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • armor — Armor is rated with a number, and players roll a die for each wound they would take; a result equal to or higher than the armor value cancels one wound.
  • cooperative play — Players work together against the game.
  • Dragon Bile — A token that can be found and thrown, lighting the space on fire to incinerate everything in it.
  • Equipment slots — Characters have specific slots for equipped items, including a slot for armor or an alternate item, and spaces for items in their backpack.
  • Ranged Combat — Rules changed from previous versions so that all hits target zombies even if survivors are in the space, but misses can still hit survivors.
  • Secret Vaults — Special spaces that allow for quick movement between locations and can contain special artifacts.
  • Shields — Shields provide the same benefit as armor and allow the player to roll all dice used in an armor roll if the character is not wearing armor.
  • Spell Casting — Combat spells can be cast from the hand like ranged weapons, hitting a target within line of sight without rolling dice.
  • Zombie Spawning — Different zombie types spawn, and a Necromancer can trigger additional spawns and has a unique fleeing behavior and loss condition.
