  • 15 minutes max is the most anyone should ever spend learning a board game.
  • the more time we spend talking at people, at our friends, while we're playing games, in reality, we are taking away from them, we are taking away quality time.
  • Here's how this faction is able to build buildings. Here's how you're able to build roost.
  • What's really cool and how you can shorten your teachers a lot is by drawing parallels between each faction.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Do you get rid of the main cardboard board of a game if you upgrade to neoprene? What do you do with the old board game map now that you have a new more premium version?
  • But overall, it still becomes very hard to store because when you have more and more games that have more and more of these mats, ultimately there's not a really good storage solution for this.
  • I still would choose neoprene any day. I just love the texture and feel of it. It's nice and smooth and when you move components across the board, you don't hear that.
  • But I would rather pick and choose one so I don't have both and that way I have room for more games, too.
  • willpower because that's what we need to address a question like this.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • the drive to play it is so insanely high
  • there's something special about Root when we've had multiple games where you end it and one person wins but on the next person's turn they would have won and that's how close it comes

  • This reminds me of Coin Light. And the game that comes to my mind is Root. And not that this is the same thing or a spin-off, but it's got a Root type feel.
  • I've read through the rules looks very accessible and pretty easy to jump into.
  • Production values on this one are really high.
  • I really appreciate I think Fal has a nice touch on accessibility, depth of gameplay, quality of components, just really putting things together in a nice package that builds some very interesting things with good gameplay and a lot of accessibility.
  • 42% tactical, 30% operational, 29% strategic.
  • My favorite game of all time is Combat Commander, which is a tactical level game.
  • I'm split between the different scales. Given the time I'd play them all, I love the idea of grand tactical, but don't have the space they generally acquire.
  • Wow, it's taking a while here. Oh, we've got Arvin Runstein5707.

  • Um, but I find it has like a loads of like little small parts um that are just not optimal.
  • It's one of my most favorite smallbox games, not just of last year, but ever.

  • The rule books for those games which were co-written by Vlarger and Jason. Uh those are really really good rule books. very very well written, absolutely perfect in terms of teaching you the game. Zero questions afterwards.
  • Well, Mage Knight, but only just Mage Knight is my number one favorite game of all time.
  • Elder Scrolls is very likely in my top 10 or top 20, but yeah. Um, it depends how much time I've got. If I had 12, 14 hours free, I'd play Elder Scrolls. If I had four or five hours free, I'd play Mage Knight.
  • Okay. Well, let's say Voidfall because the last two times that I've played Voidfall, I have specifically said I don't want to play this with people who haven't played before.
  • It's a great game. It's from QuinnD Games. They always do really good games and I'm doing a giveaway and it's not had many entries.

  • This is my number one game of all time for competitive play. But when you play with my unofficial solo mode, yes, it's unofficial. It's still really good. Try it out. When you play with my unofficial solo mode, it drops down to number nine because I I freely admit that the game is best competitively.
  • This is an awesome game from Renegade Solo series. A bag builder where you're drawing out tokens and trying to fight off enemies. Again, tons of variety with the ships. Tons of variety with the bosses. Uh so many ways to build your bag. So much excitement. I love that you defeat enemies to get new stuff in your bag. So you're not like wasting time spending money. You're just going to town.
  • But the core like card system is still great, but they made it even better. The exploration is second to none. Finding out where you are in the world and mastering your environment.
  • this game just punched me in the face until I said, "Okay, it's unstoppable."
  • But yeah, if you're talking variety, if you're talking great card combos and awesome action play and asymmetry and just crazy goodness, you can't really go wrong with Spirit Island, right?
  • But anyway, Settles and Multiverse. Love the hero variety. Love the card play. Love the boss variety. You know, is the game frustrating sometimes? Yeah, but way less than the original edition. And you just can't beat the fun.
  • I love the hero variety. I love the boss variety. I like it competitive play. I like it solo. Oh, I like it co-op. I like it every way I could get it.
  • Characters, variety, cool tactical play, amazing story, amazing exploration, like really take every other game on this list and take the cool things about it.
  • I own way too much stuff for it. I'm not saying I like recommend it to everybody. I've spent even before they started sending me review copies of stuff, I spent like over $1,000 on this game, but I'm in. I spent it and now it's here and I can play it and it's great.

  • This top screen runs at 120 Hz.
  • So, if I'm just playing like, you know, retro games or something, I don't worry about it.
  • And if I'm especially if I'm playing the dual screen games here, then if you set this to 120, this bottom screen is like a little bit weird cuz the screen technically can't go to 120, but it kind of fakes it out.

  • But by far the worst part of producing content here on this channel has to be filming gameplay videos.
  • Gameplay videos are the most challenging form of content to not only justify but also produce on, I would say, any board game channel.
  • Would you rather have a gameplay video that is more fun or more accurate?
  • But no matter how many fancy angles, B-roll, music, whatever we add, no matter what, board gameplay videos still get some of the lowest views across the board.
  • So, what do you prefer? quick, accessible 60 to 90 minute gameplay videos or giant aggressive behemoths that take three plus hours to play, table, and cover.
  • The leadup to filming is substantial as well.
  • So, as you answer those questions, I wanted to give you a quick run through of the production timeline we're talking about.
  • What takes a 1-hour gameplay recorded 1-hour gameplay and potentially turns it into a 12 or 13hour production nightmare?
  • So, would you rather engage with a well prodduced video that lives a little bit longer on the channel that is worth coming back to and consuming at your own speed? Or are live streams just more fun?

  • Seven doom advances. We have two doom on the agenda because we have 10 time. Uh, it's for every five you get a doom.
  • The Prospector's Journal described a horrifying predator. Some call the thing stalking the woods a beast. Some call it a spirit and others know it as a shapeshifter. Describing the thing seems to fill each witness with a primal unspeakable ter.
  • Quest for the sable glass. throne may have had its start in their search for the stable glass, but you have something they don't. Rhett Landre's journal.
  • If you can reach the prospector's gold mine before the codory, you may be able to keep the key out of their hands.
  • We need six clues, and only investigators of the condemned gold mine may spend the renover clues as a group to advance.
  • So, I upgraded my economy a bit, and I like what I drew, but I didn't drive the economy. So, we need to do a little better.
  • I'm taking a I think I'm taking a very risky opening hand here. Mostly because Robert isn't in it.
  • I love upgraded ecash.
  • It turns out economy is kind of important, and I felt like I was missing the card draw.
  • I love chemistry.
  • It's a Dustin deck, but kind of not.
  • I'm not allowed to anymore, but there's nothing saying you can't.
  • What's the worst case scenario? You lose it. You'd lose an action and two resources. It's pretty bad, but it's not going to cause us to lose the game.
  • It's a one in 29 chance. This odds so low.
  • That's a good draw.
  • That does seem really good, right? That's just like Econ.
  • All right, we got three of seven. I'm going to use Arch of Bald. Oh, it's during your turn. Sorry, it's not a on the hunt.
  • This is going to gain surge.
  • Uh, no more than one concealed miniur can be exposed by investigators each round.
  • God, this is it's it's doesn't even exhaust for the second one. It's just gated by the resources.
  • That's pretty hype.
  • Perfect. That's like synergy with uh he can't take it off of uh investigators either.
  • She needs to go first.
  • All right, I'll stand together with you. You probably want more money.
  • So, search the top nine.
  • Okay. Uh how do you feel about hollowing a card in your hand?
  • Yeah, but then we don't put them in the victory display.
  • Oh, yeah. I mean, there's other ways to get them back, but I I feel like I'd rather set up first.
  • Okay. I think I'm just going to grab this grizzly cuz he'll spawn somewhere else.
  • That's crazy.
  • Yeah, why did you have to show up now, brother? You're one turn late.
  • There's a Robert.
  • You don't have Charisma in this deck, huh?
  • Cuz I've never seen them both, right? Like I've seen Robert, but I've never seen Archabald as well. Fair enough.
  • I think for my last action, I'm just going to drop down this Luger. But now Archerald can die, and it's okay if he does, but I'm going to try to use his ability before to heal Leo up.
  • Special agent Callahan.
  • And that gets us hopefully enough to do something with the chemistry set here.
  • It's a lot of minus twos. It's kind of awkward because if I exhaust him and Leo, then the minus twos don't hit on anything. But, you know, that's why we have other cards in the in the deck. I think I still do it. I'll just exhaust him then.
  • Check out what's in Fairbanks this time of year?
  • We don't draw last turn. We don't draw last action, rather.
  • So, he skips over. I see. That's That's fine.
  • And I will draw a paradigm a facer.
  • A hollow. Nope.
  • Okay. That's good intel.
  • Cool. This is gone.
  • Uh, you want me to come deal with that guy?
  • I mean, I theoretically could fight him. I can do the heal, but yeah, I might as well use your ability.
  • I mean, I suppose I I don't need to waste a shot on it, right? I could use Archabald and then you could finish him off with special agent Callahan if you wanted.
  • What's best for you is the best is the real question here.
  • And then I have to exhaust him. Okay, so we have to go to one of these locations and we'll get attacked by the grizzly cuz he'll jump over this location.
  • I can move in. I can uh hit the guy.
  • I could move into this grizzly and try to dance with him for a bit.
  • Okay, that sounds good.
  • All right, I'll move in here. I'll spend a resource to move a damage from Leo Duca to the paracausal entity.
  • Mountain Stream. After you enter it, test book or foot one. If you fail, take one damage. I'll test foot one. So, we'll go four to one.
  • Nice.
  • And after the last clue is discovered, put the three set aside outer wilderness locations into play adjacent to it.
  • All right, uh, well, I'm going to spend two resources, I think, to do something here. And I think the correct course of action.
  • Okay. Well, before I spend the resources, I think I'm going to I mean, I'm only going what, four to four with the gun here. I need like a robber to get this out here. I could go the eye of the raven on the attack. Maybe with a mouser. I think that's probably worth it.
  • Yeah, we'll spend two. We'll flip this over to go mouser. And we're going to go six to uh Sorry. So, it's going to be eight cuz I started six for my base. And then I'll go plus two. And I got a vicious blow for this as well.
  • So, we'll go nine to four.
  • Got it.
  • I don't get any bonus, but the grizzly bear is dead.
  • That seems like a bonus to me. You got three resources off of him.
  • I did. I did. Yeah, he that was an e-cash bear. And I think I do need to play you. I think you're very important to the game plan.
  • All right. Let's see here. So, I can use this to go I can exhaust him also.
  • Gives me plus three. So, it gives me four to two.
  • Um, and then I can exhaust Leo maybe. Also, I think we're not I mean, we know that we don't want to draw any cards.
  • All right, we got three of seven. I'm going to use Arch of Bald. Oh, it's during your turn. Sorry, it's not a on the hunt. All right, I will draw normally this figures in the dark. If there are no enemies in the shadows, this is going to gain surge.
  • Roger.
  • It's a really nice thing to see there.
  • Didn't we say something about uh
  • I think we did, didn't we?
  • I think I'm just going to fail this, right?
  • Yeah.
  • Okay, well,
  • here we go.
  • Okay, I will to give Leo and Charlie a direct damage.
  • Uh, isn't it each asset with health you control? So, you wouldn't, right?
  • Oh, each asset. Thank you.
  • Can I go first?
  • Sure.
  • Hell yeah.
  • That's good.
  • Uh, and then I think I'm going to search the top nine cards in counter deck for an enemy and draw it and shuffle the encounter deck, then exhaust that enemy and gain three resources.
  • Mhm.
  • Okay.
  • Um
  • no. No, there's nothing to hollow there.
  • Oh, there is. But I We're looking at three allies. I got to play them at some point.
  • Is it the one we can get back?
  • I think I'm just going to grab this grizzly cuz he'll spawn somewhere else.
  • Yeah, it just
  • because it's a draw. Yeah,
  • All right, I'm going to draw a card for my second action.
  • Yeah,
  • No. No, not yet.
  • Cuz I've never seen them both, right? Like I've seen Robert, but I've never seen Archabald as well. Fair enough. Uh
  • Yeah, that'd be good. Okay,
  • let's see.
  • I have a couple choices.
  • I think
  • we do you first. I think we play special agent Callahan.
  • So, I've got two. This gets me plus three to five.
  • It's a lot of minus twos.
  • It's kind of awkward because if I exhaust him and Leo, then the minus twos don't hit on anything. But, you know, that's why we have other cards in the in the deck. I think I still do it. I'll just exhaust him then.
  • Yep.
  • So, I think I said I'm at five.
  • Five to two.
  • Two plus three. Yeah. Five to two.
  • Yeah, of course. Okay. Still good. Still good.
  • Um, and then I think we can start to move.
  • So, let's see. Check out what's in Fairbanks this time of year.
  • Oh, wow.
  • So, I played, I investigated. I have one action left. Uh, we're going to need the money, so I just take a resource.
  • All right.
  • This guy doesn't move yet. Okay,
  • we can go up.
  • All right. And then we'll go four of seven. And I will draw a paradigm a facer.
  • Something for me to do.
  • I can move in.
  • I can uh hit the guy.
  • Uh I will then I think move into here. Mountain Stream. After you enter it, test book or foot one. If you fail, take one damage. I'll test foot one. So, we'll go four to one.
  • We're good.
  • Sweet.
  • Yeah, I think that's what I do. First action, we're going to fight using this ability. Exhaust him for the the bonus. So, that's plus four. So, I'm at five to two.
  • All right. Dead for two reasons.
  • Yeah, that's true. I could could have used that as well. Okay.
  • Um, we want to move.
  • I could be with you and then I could play something else. I think that's I mean, I don't really want to be too far away cuz I don't have weapons other than this guy.
  • Yeah. And if if you take damage, the archer bald's going to be here for a little bit longer. His time is limited, but he's going to be here for a bit longer.
  • That sounds good. Okay, let's go one all. I know we do need to go to these other locations also, but that's okay.
  • Okay, I fail. Leo, you're just the punching bag right now, I think.
  • Uh, did you want to put on Callahan just in case you draw the take a damage, deal one damage to your assets again?
  • Right. Um, action three. We're going to play another ally, which is Alton.
  • Let's go. Pretty good. Uh, gives me We down one resource left.
  • And I guess we can try to get a clue.
  • We can use the chemistry set now.
  • Heck yeah.
  • Um, yeah, cuz I can't fail by two. Nice.
  • Uh, so two, three, four.
  • Yeah. Four to one.
  • Let's go.
  • Yes. No.
  • Two. No.
  • Oh no. Oh no. We just got chemistry set in. Oh no.
  • That's rad, Justin.
  • That's unfortunate.
  • Oh no.
  • Well, the good news is only these two die.
  • That is the good news.
  • Oh no,
  • that's a bit of a
  • All right,
  • that's a bit of an uh oh, but that's okay.
  • I do get a clue. We can't forget about the clue.
  • No, that's that's important.
  • We're just too good for this game. So, we need to get
  • Yeah. Yeah. Well, that I mean I think so. That's the problem. We're playing very slow right now because we haven't seen these decks in forever. And I think if we were playing faster, we would have remembered the burden of leadership. But it was so long ago.
  • I know, right? Well, I I mean, I remembered it. I just didn't remember that chemistry.
  • That's draw a card. Yeah,
  • cuz I think it's a grim memoir that says you may draw a card. This is You have to.
  • Have I been burned by this card now?
  • You might have been. Yeah, that might have been. Yeah.
  • Uh
  • oh.
  • Okay. I might need some more resources from you.
  • yeah, I if I can I'll give them to you in a heartbeat.
  • All right. What do we got here?
  • Um I will test four to three on this.
  • And the good news is that Leo uh still has damage on him for you to uh
  • Yeah. to get rid of.
  • Um okay.
  • I think I'm just going to hollow this other chemistry set.
  • That's fair. That's fair.
  • Oh man.
  • Shall I get the last clue here and then we see if we move?
  • Yeah. Um, I was thinking maybe I could arch a bald uh grab an enemy and then move some stuff over before you go.
  • Sounds good.
  • So, yeah, I'm going to look at the top nine.
  • Uh, it's probably you, if I had to guess,
  • just cuz then we don't need to draw you later.
  • So, yeah, it's going to be the red glove man. O,
  • uh, because I draw it, he'll spawn with me, right? Yeah.
  • Yes. Then exhaust him. Yeah. Okay.
  • Honestly, it's pretty good.
  • Yeah. I'm going to spend a resource to move a damage onto him.
  • From Leo.
  • Yeah, from Leo.
  • I think I need to get Robert out. Archaval, thank you for your work. You I mean, you gave me six resources and we we healed two damage and dealt two damage.
  • Yeah. But I think Robert's just going to do more for us right now.
  • And Robert's going to start by revealing this 41 Daringer for my hand.
  • Uh so we're only going to go six to five. It's not great, but it is a free attack, so I'm going to take it.
  • Okay. Uh you can hollow this.
  • Um,
  • I can draw a card.
  • Okay. Uh, and then I think I'm going to spend two. We're going to use the mouser.
  • Uh, I mean, what if I use this? No, cuz it only deals one damage. And I have a uh overpower on this. So, we'll go eight to five.
  • That's bad.
  • That's a painful autofail right there.
  • I notice you've stopped tracking these.
  • Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I uh it's better for my mental.
  • [Music]

  • So there's a good argument for both ways, right?
  • The clue compression is basically only with the chemistry set of which I've clearly not really set up to take advantage of quite yet.
  • Mhm. Mhm.
  • On the other hand, if I draw one of those substance dissimilations again, then it would be nice that the chemistry set wasn't in play anyway.
  • Yeah, that's fair.
  • I mean, yeah, in order for the chemistry set to start being clue compression, you kind of need a steady-handed, right? You need other pieces. So,
  • yeah, that's the thing. I have that.
  • Oh, okay. Okay.
  • But,
  • I don't know. I just don't I don't want to lose my draw at this point, right?
  • It's tough. Um, I mean, eventually we'll get deductions and things. I don't know. I'd rather take the minus one sanity right now.
  • Okay, let's try to get this last clue. So, we've got one, we've got two, we've got three, four, and I think we run that.
  • Yay.
  • Uh, is there for keys? Is it only during your turn you can do the lightning bolt?
  • Probably, right?
  • I think it can be any free triggered ability period, I think.
  • Okay, I'm just going to quickly check. because I might do it during the enemy phase or like uh uh after the upkeep phase begins.
  • Um, to maybe so then I can maybe use finish it off the reg man with that next turn.
  • That sounds good.
  • yeah, do it after during any player window as a lightning bolt ability. Okay,
  • nice. Okay, so I've taken two actions.
  • I got the last clue, so we do need to put these other locations into play.
  • No problem.
  • We do have four clues. We just need two more.
  • Um, unfortunately, I'm just like strapped for cash once again. I mean, losing
  • Yes, losing two guys is huge.
  • Two guys and the chemistry set. It's kind of a lot of lot of dough.
  • Yep. Um, so I'm feeling like I just take the two resources.
  • All right, we'll send this guy in here. Upkeep face begins. I'm going to draw the top card of the encounter deck.
  • Sure. Uh, four to three.
  • Deal damage to you, man. If you die, that would be bad.
  • All right. Then we'll go six of seven. Sure. I mean, you might ancient evils us, but honestly, we kind of I'm I'll take the
  • six of seven, right? We just ignore them.
  • Oh, even better. Okay, perfect timing then.
  • Uh, conceal two.
  • Uh, so we'll put one here and then like one How about this
  • Seven doom advances.
  • I think I'm taking a very risky opening hand here. Mostly because Robert isn't in it.
  • Switch de power for all play areas for all cards from the Crimson Conspiracy can counter set. Remove them from the game.
  • That scenario was just like a comedy of errors.
  • But then you pivoted in the back half to like I mean that's Charlie Kane, right? You get your board build up.
  • Well, you did say those tablets were going to be absolutely murder at the end, and you were not wrong.
  • spawn a void chimera true form in the shadows and resolve its concealed keyword distributing each of those concealed many cards as evenly possible among all wilderness locations in play.
  • Uh, so we're going to fire with the mouser. We're going up two for all of these. We don't really have a choice.
  • Felt like I was like crawling like swimming through tar to get there, but we did it. We did it.

  • Yes, maybe we knew there were still some games in transit.
  • It's like 300 plus 150. I can't remember how much I pay about that much. 450 €450 something like it's about 500 Australian dollars.
  • Sadly, they didn't survive the post.
  • It's probably because actually no not the Pacific Ocean cuz that's the least direct ocean to get to Australia.
  • So some people who really likes to care of their board games, please do not yell to anyone.
  • It's still playable, although it's like bitten up like really bad, especially on the side.
  • So, this is uh this is Space Cowboys. Sorry, Space Cowboys. We haven't been able to display a perfectly square box, but rest assured you at home, if you purchase from your friendly local game store, it will be square.
  • This is by the people who did Ghost Lift who we uh which we shown last time.
  • I am excited to play Recall.
  • So, there are more that or three more actually games.
  • If you have heard of Startups, please let us know if you enjoy it or if you don't like it.
  • Um, this is Fman Frey's game called Floss, which is Fearless.
  • I think I'm okay with this. Like, looks like everything is intact.
  • I like this art here. I like this angular very stark angular uh geometric shape.
  • So, this is like um a draft.
  • This is very sad. This is uh I can't really give these toys to Teran.
  • So, this is Limit. It's about environmental and this is the last games I think.
  • Um, yeah, maybe it is rare. Maybe it's going to worth a lot in the chart, but it's dented a little bit.
  • So, this is um yeah, maybe it is rare. Maybe it's going to worth a lot in the chart, but it's dented a little bit. Right.
  • And this one I remember the preview from last year's Essen. So I remember being quite interested in this one.
  • So, this is um yeah, maybe it is rare. Maybe it's going to worth a lot in the chart, but it's dented a little bit.
  • This is a two-player game kind of like push and pull by uh Korea board Korea board games.
  • So, this is the only one that I got from Korea Board Games and hoping this is going to be a fun two-play game that we got we can bring to Bali in our family visit soon.
  • So, those are these are um little wooden potatoes.
  • What do you call it? The laser cut.
  • Laser rocks. Laser.
  • Is it laser rocks or just general? No, just general general laser cut.
  • Yeah, laser cut. And including the potatoes. It's very good.
  • Caution signs is one of the one that we got from Essen.
  • This is again, this is not new, but this is a good party game plays a lot of people, which is what is it now? Nine players up to nine players where one person is a guesser, the other one is drawer. You have 20 seconds to draw a combination of stuff and the guess I will need to and the cards would get mixed.
  • You will get an adjective and a noun and draw them together.
  • Very good there.
  • Yes. And then it's kind of so clovery you have to or a guesser has to align them correctly. Yes.
  • Good fun. So this is uh we've got three things from Delicious Games this year.
  • One you've seen last time which is the underwater city expansion. Second one is Aquaria. This is a Thomas Hollik game.
  • Yes. So obviously he had the very also slightly broken on the corner. He had the very big show last year with Seti Galileo and uh the tea.
  • Yeah. I heard good things about this one as well. Yeah.
  • And his release this year. Yes. So, and then the second one from delicious games is Aperna. This is Vladimir Sushi. The only Vladimir Sushi's game. Suhei. Vladimir Sui's game.
  • That's what I've been singing in my head. Now you've got it.
  • Yeah. Yeah. So, this is um our only Vladimir Suhi's game. And this is a smaller box. So, yeah. Nice little cute box.
  • We've been enjoying these games including last year's release for Safa. Oh yes, he's he's had uh many classic releases over a long time. So many. So many.
  • So before we move on to the next games, these magazine I got handed over magazine which is called Joy.
  • Fort is it for depends what language it is. Yes. So there's not a lot of magazines around these days, but this is one of them. Um, why the first RPG season is the most important, challenging, and satisfying. Part two.
  • So, a mix of things there and then a bag. I don't know if you know that I collect bags. So, on my birthday, please give me bags. Backs.
  • Yes, Hobby tote bag. Yes, tote bag. And it's got two handles.
  • Um, over there is a And it's got two handles.
  • Yeah. It's actually a thoughtful review of the bag.
  • Yes. There's the Soros. This is from Super Mele. Now, Super Meles distribute lots of games and this is one of their release games. It's actually sold out at Essentville. So, yes, it was one of the bigger games. Yeah. Shri Mill. Yes.
  • So, it's looks beautiful. Look at that.
  • And it has these dingies.
  • I think somebody mentioned this game as well to me. Pretty sure it is like in my shopping list somewhere.
  • Yes, it was pretty uh pretty well hyped going into the show.
  • Very heavy. Lots of things in here. H they are okay the box the bit day if you want to please grab it first. So this is by Brett Spiel podcast. So look at this. It's cute right? It made it home.
  • nice little 3D printed bit.
  • Which clicks together.
  • Clicks together. Hooray. Uh two more games. Well two more games that we can show. Oh yeah. I forgot about this. Whoops. There's a space lab. You would have seen the slideshow photo. Maybe you're not in the first part of essence build game. This is engine building game and it's very pretty. Like you want to Okay, it's shiny as well.
  • Happy.
  • Not as shiny as the other one.
  • Well, the in the inside's also shiny, Taran. Well, you can play a bit um a bit later if you like. Look. Shiny.
  • That is shiny.
  • Yeah, shiny. Anyways, trust me, it's shiny. So, this is by Studio H. And this is a kind of like yeah as I say uh engine not engine building but tile placement you're trying to meet objective in a different way and this is my fault chemist lookout games
  • now if you look back at the fortunes of scandal way it is a euro game but a euro game but looks like a marit
  • very uh very thematic looking art. Yes, that this one is um well, look at Games brought out things like Oh, we've got the Forest Shovel one as well, the D Mall, the new version, but I didn't get it from Essence Spiel. I got it from Gen Con. Uh and this one is the lookout games one. So, would be interesting um to to play like this looks like not a Euro game, right?
  • No, it looks like a battle card type of game. It's what I would generally imagine. I mean, it is to play two players.
  • So, and so the Marvel characters we have here, it's I don't recognize many of them. That's Iron Man. That's the Hulk.
  • That's all you know about Marvel. I'm the big fan of Marvel bigger.
  • I'm more of an I'm more of an X-Men.
  • That's actually true.
  • So, I would recognize X-Men of which those I'm not
  • which I will need to give you quiz. This is Hercules and the 12 labors. So this this is a solo game. This is uh the the publishers just got a few copies. So I got this from Essen
  • and that is Envy Born Games.
  • Yeah, it seems like a really fun uh solo game with with dice to dice to allocate to the cards.
  • There's not really a lot of explanations there. Sorry. This is Punikica which we talked about in the previous vlog which is a two-player battle game with card play.
  • Yes, Punic War game from Felank.
  • And over there we have Children of Coloss. This might have the most heft to it. This is Yes, it is quite heavy. Children of the Colossi which I also show in photos um that it's kind of like a there's a area control but also there's uh you want to send your work in here for your control. want to send it up there in the mountains to give you more powers. So that difficult decision.
  • Um they've got lots and lots of them but and by the end of essence spill I see that they almost none. So I don't know maybe they sold out as well.
  • And this is not new. I don't know if this is this year's release. I'm pretty sure this was kickstarted.
  • So they're very big this year though. Jaggi. Yes.
  • Yeah. And we also had a alternative rule to some of using some of the components for
  • It needs more love.
  • I'd rather it be damaged than not arrive at all.

  • I'm very grateful that they are full of games. um but how I want to continue to explore many more games in the future and I just don't have room for them. And so I am valuing more and more games that fit into a smaller space.
  • And uh and even better for the publishers, smaller games mean that you can put more games in a carton, more games on a pallet, more games on a shipping container or a or a truck or a train, however you're transporting them around the world, and so it's uh more cost-effective to freight ship these games, too. Better for the environment, too. You're using fewer components to make these games. Um and less materials, basically.
  • It's kind of a miracle of a game how well this game works and how long it came out.
  • This to me is not a filler trick taking game. This is a a really substantial trick taking game.
  • I am completely enamored with this game.
  • I love the card row in the middle and how you can either buy a card or remove a card so your opponent can't get it. I think that is such a clever mechanism.
  • Every card is two cards. It isn't just one card. [...] It's brilliant. It is so so clever.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Quantity time I have like uh for a longer game. So one of these is for quantity time is play a longer game that you love but maybe you rarely rarely get to play. You get a big chunk of time with someone that you value and playing a longer game that you really enjoy. And there's quality time which is more about bonding with someone over a an activity that really connects you with that person. And so some examples I gave for this would be to like go to a game cafe or a store with someone else and you know play a game, have a have a cup of coffee.
  • Well, that kind of lead that's interesting because I I think people might I I think you highly value time. I do, too. I think maybe people value it in different ways because two of the categories that I have on the love languages are quality time and quantity time.
  • For me, the number one way that someone can make me feel uh appreciated or care for it or loved is if they learn a game that I don't know and they take the time to teach it to me. That is far more valuable to me than a new game.
  • So, yeah, I get that. I 100% get that. That's wonderful. And the thing I love about this whole concept of these love languages, whether they apply to games or otherwise, is that it it I think it leads to deeper connections with other people. It it means that you're looking outside of yourself.
  • Because for me, um my if I didn't know about this concept, I would assume that other people feel the most loved if I go out of my way to do something for them, if I save them time or inconvenience. But that might not be that might be way down on someone else's list. They might love to get a new game under the tree or, you know, as a gift. They might love to have that that game day or that time at a game cafe. That might be very high on their list. So, it it's really helped me to pay attention to how other people feel valued and to learn more about them in that way.

  • It's really cool and it's a you know, it's a feels very uh strategic and still plays in like 30 minutes.
  • I mean I I love that when a game feels like it has some strategic depth, but still plays pretty quickly.
  • So yeah, Flintlock is awesome for that.
  • I love this duel trend that we have right now because of a couple of things. I think that they're doing a great job distilling these bigger games into faster experiences, which I really love.
  • It's also got wonderful artwork, wonderful production design. Everything looks awesome on the table and it's just yeah, it's it's all the things I love about Wonderland's War, but in like half of the time.
  • And so I love that now I just need one other player and I can get this to the table as well.

  • That's also because we played cooperative games which is weird. We don't usually do that.
  • We played 826 place.
  • We played in 29 locations last year. This time we played in 26 locations.
  • We played with 130 different players last year. This year 130 different players. So exactly the same amount but different people probably some of them are the same.
  • The age index was eight last year. So we had eight games. We had playlist eight times. This year we had nine games. We played this nine times.
  • Last year we played 366 different games which was like one one for each day. How many do you think it is this year?

  • I would always love the growth to be a bit more because I feel like what we do is fun. We might not have the biggest the best like production values and stuff like that.
  • But thank you to everybody who has subscribed this year. We appreciate you a lot.
  • But what I think is incredible is that I say silly, stupid, and also wrong stuff like my Norwegian brain just like whoop words. What are those? And people still watch our stuff and that's I don't know why, but thank you so much. I really appreciate you.
  • How many views do you think our videos got this year?

  • That's basically the reason why we played very much fewer games, but still more time because we had a great lot of fun playing campaign games and diving into more.
  • We have a huge shelf over there with just campaign games that we would love to play more of in 2026.
  • My most fun experience is Kings of Ruin because we had so much fun with it. We played it for almost 30 hours, I think, in December.

  • this one is, Hoplam is solo.
  • the Pandora's Ruin uh brought in several different little things like more scions and stuff like that. But the biggest thing was the Mercury Boots campaign mode, that new campaign mode, because it switch it switched from where instead of each act lasting 12 weeks, it made each act last six weeks.
  • this is my my second uh chip theory game in this segment, but you get that same deal. Chips, neoprene, plastic.
  • But now each act probably takes about two or so with the Mercury deal. And that was like one of the smartest things. They listened to their their their, fans or whatever and they added that and it was the perfect addition cuz it made it a nice swallowable uh deal at that point.
  • that expansion saved this game because if I had to go through it again with uh, you know, four hours per act, I it's it's miserable, dude.

  • The system of you know this timeline element of like playing cards after other players to trigger different effects is such a cool thing.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a deck-building game.
  • one of the interesting aspects of this is there's 13 ways to win the game.
  • Essentially, 13 dark pacts in the game and each of those dark pacts is a unique win condition that feels, you know, it feels like crazy to get.
  • You can also play two times and three times multipliers on those cards to double every aspect of the card.
  • that just feels like a very satisfying aspect of the game.
  • the main mechanism of the game is I split, you choose and that's always one of my favorite mechanisms because it's it's not a difficult game to teach, but it's a difficult game to make decisions.
  • So, what do you sacrifice and what do you keep is also an interesting aspect of that one.
  • This is a great family game if you want to.
  • And so, there's a lot of lying and promising of other people where you're like, "Do you want to go there with me? Nobody else go there.
  • I swear to god, don't go there."
  • And so, there's a lot of sort of lying and intrigue and where you're going and promises that you're making and stuff like that.
  • please, you know, check out my new series. It's all funny and games when it drops in May.

Pros
  • More enjoyable than Flip Seven.
  • Better at higher player counts (4+).
  • Interesting choices due to the 'roly' (wild) option.
  • Deciding when to bank is a key, exciting decision.
  • Tiebreaker chips add significant strategic depth.
  • Creates engaging moments with crowd chanting and shared excitement.
  • Keeps players engaged even after they've passed for the round.
  • Visible, but not fully countable, banked money adds a layer of deduction.
  • Can be a hit of the year, potentially a Spiel des Jahres nominee if it had a German version.
Cons
  • Not as good at lower player counts (less than 4).
  • No scaling for 2-3 players, making majorities tighter and potentially less balanced.
Thematic elements
  • Press your luck dice game where players try to bank money before busting
Comparison games
  • Flip Seven
  • Push
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Dice Rolling — The core of the game involves rolling two dice to determine available dollar amounts or special outcomes like 'roly' (wild) or doubles (bust).
  • Press Your Luck — Players roll dice and decide whether to take money or risk busting. They can also bank money to secure it, but might lose it if they bust before banking.
  • Set Collection — Players aim to collect majorities of different dollar amount chips and banked money to score the most points at the end of the game.
  • Tiebreaker — Tiebreaker chips are awarded to the first player to bank in a round and are used to break ties in majorities.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Roly is a press your luck game where at the end of the game you're trying to have a bunch of money in your wallet banked and hopefully with having majorities of those money getting different types of chips which will also add to your stash trying to have the most money in the end.
  • Deciding when to bank is awesome cuz not only are you banking your money but you're also taking a tiebreaker chip which could be huge and I like that there's only one of each chip, one through seven.
  • It has those sort of experience moments too that are just really fun out of these sort of mass market style games.
  • The game is fantastic.
  • It's definitely not as good at the lower player counts. I would say four or more players is what you need for this game. With less, it's not nearly the experience that it's really meant to be.
  • this is I think going to be one of the hits of the year.
  • For all those reasons, it's getting my highest honor which is a saxophone serenade which means I'm keeping it in my gaming library

  • I like three small box games. If one of them ends up being great, I'm happy.

  • But there's also a soft spot in between because like with Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest, we had a pretty big first printing.
  • Well, it's time and money. I'll throw time in there, too, because it is significantly easier, in my opinion, to design an expansion for a game than to design a game from scratch.

  • Small box light board games are not the appetizer.
  • For most groups, most of the time in the actual real world where we actually play these things, they are the main course, and the sooner we stop treating complexity as a proxy for quality, the better off everyone's game nights are going to be.
  • The top 100 is disproportionately dominated by big, complex games, and it's not because those games are inherently better. It's a sampling bias problem fundamentally.
  • The depth emerges entirely from human interaction. That's not a shallow game.
  • Complexity creep is real.
  • Adding complexity is easy. Stripping a game to its essentials and making every rule and every component carry its weight, that is hard. That is a design achievement.
  • The most objectively impressive board game is worthless if it never hits the table.
  • Heavy games are implicitly luxury goods.
  • Small box games fit into real life.

  • The expansion adds significant content with three new factions, landmarks, and two new maps.
  • The factions are unique and offer interesting strategic choices.
  • The gorge map is novel and makes players think more about positioning.
  • The Twilight Council are interesting to play and very annoying to play against.
  • The Navs of the Deepwood are described as one of the funniest factions to play.
  • The quantity of content is high for an expansion.
  • Provides replayability for a highly played game.
Cons
  • The marsh map can be confusing to navigate, especially at lower player counts.
  • The Lily Pad Diaspora can be difficult to get their engine going due to balancing peaceful/militant enclaves and reliance on crafting cards.
  • The Lily Pad Diaspora have a scoring constraint of a maximum of four points per round.

  • Area Control — The Twilight Council's goal is to get assemblies out onto the board and flip them to their governing side, which will score them points, and when assemblies are governing, it limits what can be done in that clearing.
  • Card Drafting — The Lily Pad Diaspora have a deck of frog cards, which are a frog suit, and their enclave tokens can add the frog suit to clearings.
  • Faction Asymmetry — The expansion comes with three new factions: the Lily Pad Diaspora, the Twilight Council, and Navs of the Deepwood, each with unique mechanics and playstyles.
  • map features — The gorge map is based around a large dam, and the marsh map has a greater number of clearings, some of which can be blocked off with flood tiles.
  • Resource Management — The Navs of the Deepwood use items or exhaust items to take actions, similar to the vagabond.
  • Set Collection — The Navs of the Deepwood score points from the number of kidnapped warriors they have from other factions and from their acclamation tokens.

  • And we're bored of it.
  • So this expansion comes with three new factions, the Lily Pad Diaspora, the Twilight Council, and Navs of the Deepwood alongside three landmarks, and two new maps, the gorge, and the marsh.
  • The lilyad diaspora are a frog faction and finally been waiting for this for so long.
  • The Twilight Council are bats and act as a sort of UN peacekeeping faction.
  • The navs of the deepwood are an alternate vagabond faction shown by the fact that you can't play with both them and the vagabond in a single game.
  • Essentially, what you're doing with the naves are you're popping out of the forest, hitting people over the head, and then you're dragging them back into the forest and holding them hostage.
  • I think to me the least interesting is the marsh because it's one that's primarily designed for a higher player count so The marsh is great if you have five or six people.
  • I really enjoyed this map. It's based around a giant dam and like a gorge.
  • Yeah. So I think yeah maybe let's just start with the map first since we just mentioned them you get the two maps and I think to me the least interesting is the marsh because it's one that's primarily designed for a higher player count so The marsh is great if you have five or six people
  • Honestly, the most beautiful map uh out of all the root maps.
  • they were probably the one that sounded the least interesting at the outset, but that I found to be the most kind of in interesting to play in a sense. very annoying to play against.
  • So yeah, coming on to the uh Twilight Council, which I played, they I actually really enjoyed them.
  • But what I kind of found, I don't know, maybe I need to play play a bit more with them, but I I found them almost a little bit the more boring of the three
  • But overall, I think everything uh is is great and has its place.
  • These are definitely factions you want if you have a group of three, four, more.
  • So, yeah. Any final thoughts? No, I mean, you can't go wrong with more route, quite frankly, can you?
  • Root's one of our most played games ever in our collection. And we still I still haven't managed to like get through all of the content.
