19 Fresh Board Game Review - Keep or Cull
Transcript
Hello everyone. This is Cinema
and this is Johannes
and you're watching Board Gaming Ramblings
and welcome back to Keep or Call of the series where we play all of the games and decide whether to keep them in the collection or call them out of the collection. This is another special episode.
Yes,
these are the second batch of the games from the marathon that we did. And if you counted them up, you're not going to get to the amount of games we played because there were some escape room games and stuff like that which we this time around we're not including it. We we're going to probably we might make an escape room game video because we wanted to speak about some of these puzzle games.
But yes, the more we think about it might not be like the most logical thing to like keep because it's a one time experience.
For me, it's more of a way to showcase it. If it's a good one, I would like to speak about it. That is kind of like the thing. But we have other videos for that like game of the month and all of those things. With that out of the way,
yeah.
Are you ready for some games?
No.
No,
I am. Okay, I was thinking like no games today. This is going to be the end of the video. Very weird video. Do you want to begin?
Do it. First off, we have
up with Dickory.
Dickory. One, two, three. Boom.
Boom.
Double cow.
This is a shedding game.
Yes. Your favorite. You have understood now.
No, but I and this was fine. I like this one. Yes. The thing about this one, the twist with this is that what is the highest value in the deck changes. Mhm.
And if you can't play with the rule that's already there, you will take away a card in like a queue and then it will change the the values of the cards basically or what's the most worth and that was a cool neat twist.
I thought it was fun, but I I don't need to play it again.
I agree.
Next up, we have Compile Main Two. This was a review copy. Thank you so much for that. We already played Compile main one. Now it's the second one. Are you ready?
1 2 3. Boom.
It's a co for me.
What's happening?
I don't know if I need to have two. But [clears throat]
but we don't because you can take this and you will take everything and put it cheap.
It's just variety.
Compile. I like compile.
It's basically the same just with [clears throat] new stuff. If you haven't played compile, it's a very simple two-player uh card playing game. Card playing and card game. You will be drafting different kind of six card decks and you will shuffle them together and you will try to play them uh strategically to open your your opponent and get to a a number. I think it's 10 uh of your card values in a row. Then you will flip them around and you will have compiled that. If you compile everything, you will win. The things we saw in this were really cool. And and this is one that is if we play more two-player games, I think this would be one that you could play very much because it's so simple and with this added, you double the variety and you can easily fit this in because we don't sleep hard in the other box. So you have like a bunch of variety for
it builds on kind of the same mechanism as shot and taten, but you have like try to have majority of the same area.
Next up,
next up is RoboCraft.
Yes, this is a tricking game. Are you ready? 1 2 3 boom.
It's a double cow.
I think this would have been a keeper if we played it one year ago because then we kept all the trick taking stuff. Now something has to go. And Robocoft, I liked it, but I didn't love it. The cool thing about this one is that you want to win and lose different tricks because you will get the cards of the colors that you win, but to actually score points for them, you will have to lose some tricks in that same color as well. Yeah. And if you don't have a matching cube to your cards or a m Yeah. Vice versa, you will get negative points for those instead. So, there is absolutely timing uh situations where you don't want to win a trick. It felt a bit chaotic, more like a lot of tricking games have luck. Most of them do have luck. H this one a bit more chaotic or and luck based and my feeling of it was that. So I don't really need to play it again. Next up is another trick taking game. There's not too many this time. It is.
Uh yes. Are you ready? One, two, three. Boom.
It's a keep from here.
And a come from here doesn't happen often. This is it's an interesting one. H you have different uh amount of life cubes depending on how many players you are. You will be playing a a must follow trick taking game. The first time somebody can't follow that's going to be the trump. So when somebody plays offuit that is the trump you use this box to to show what is the trump which is kind of neat. H and and you're basically trying to maybe not score points but it's kind of the first time you play this especially when you read the rules you're going to be like I don't understand what I'm trying to do.
Yeah. because it's written in a way where it's like super like the thing that's most hap often is going to happen. It's like the last thing that's in the it's basically one of those where it's like if this if not this you go to this if not this you go to this and the fourth and the fifth in the the order is what is most often going to happen. So if you don't understand that you're going to be like I don't understand what I'm trying to do. Uh I thought it was good but for me I don't need to keep it. So it's up to you. It's a fun one because you want to uh have the lowest score, but if you're starting to get a little points, you want to have more than the other players, but not uh over a certain amount. So, that's a very interesting balancing thing, but sometimes it's totally out of your control. So, I am I have other games that itches this um itch. I don't know.
It is the itch. [snorts] So, I'm okay with it. Next up is
108 Outlaws.
This is another review copy. Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two, three, boom.
It's a double cow.
Yes.
Uh, this is a game where you're playing cards and you're trying to Well, it's I don't know what the theme is, but you're trying basically to get symbols so that you can get other cards that are worth more points that require certain symbols. And a lot of cards also have like these bonuses that you're trying to to yeah get the most out of. Yes. Thing is this game is over when I'm starting to do the cool things in the game.
So I I feel like I'm building up and then the game is over.
That is true in very many like engine building games and stuff like that. That is kind of where usually when they stop for me
when the game is put out guys with symbols on them.
But it's not that because
like that's the thing.
Every single card has a different ability. So the thing the thing maybe that's why you're not winning the game. It's because you're supposed to try to play cards or let you play other cards which then lets you do other things and then be able to get the special cards. So it's like a you're set collecting but you try to set collect as fast as possible. So, it's a race game.
And my thing then is that I'm trying to get all the stuff so I get like this perfect cascading thing, but then I end up just never getting there.
Yes, I I really like this one, but it's not one I will need to play again. But I really enjoyed my place of it. Okay,
next up we have the last trick taking game, I think, for today, which is worst in show. Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two, three, boom.
This is the double keep. This is really cool. It It has some of that that chaos. Yeah. But it's all about a dog show uh with people dogs that don't uh what do you call it? Behave. In this game, you're going to have a hand of cards and you can't rearrange them. And then you're going to place one like your bidding card be behind like x amount from the top of your hand. And that is the amount of cards that you're bidding to win like the tricks you're bidding to win. and all the cards in front of that, you can break the rules or misbehave, which theatically it is. So, when it's my turn, if I could follow suit with one of the cards in the left of my my my hand, I can then say, I'm going to misbehave and play something from the right of my hand uh instead. And you you want to reach your bid, but you also want to be able to get rid of all your misbehaving dogs before it ends. And also in like the order of it is important. It's kind of like in pinas
where you want to go out like not first.
It's the same here. Like you want to do it
but not last because then you will lose points for it. So it's a really really fun one.
Yeah, I like that one.
It was interesting because I felt like I had a certain amount of control,
but because you can misbehave and break the rules sometimes people can take tricks
that you like you couldn't do. Yes. because they can you're you're not forced to follow suddenly.
Next up
next up is Punikica Cart Rome versus Cartage.
This is another review copy. It's a two-player war game. Are you ready?
One, two, three, boom.
It's double kill. Well, it isn't my genre.
No,
but with that said, I think this worked perfectly well. It's very fast one.
20 minutes and I think that's kind of correct.
Yeah. And you play cards. And you play cards to um do maneuvers, do actions, but also when you go into a an area with your opponent present there, you will have like a battle. And then you also play those same cards to have more power than them.
And all the cards that you play don't get go up on your hand. So you're you kind of know after a little while what your opponent has left on their hand. So, you're trying to not set yourself up in a very vulnerable position. It's a little like Yeah, it's a I feel like it's a chess tactical. Yeah, just abstract kind of game.
A war game. It was fun.
Happy to play it, but I don't need to play it again. Next up, we have Shouting Poker. A game about trading poker hands and trying to be the best. Are you ready? It's a review copy. One, two, three, boom.
It's a go from me. This was a surprising thing for me. Uh because I knew it wasn't going to be your thing.
Yeah, I am surprised you're choosing.
But I think you also enjoyed it more than you thought you would because I'm I was there when you played it. You did laugh.
You did enjoy yourself.
You didn't have a horrible time.
And I can tell you why. But tell us more about the game first.
Yes. The game is all about trying to get good poker hands. So you're going to draw five cards and then it's a trading thing, realtime trading thing. So, you're basically going to say, "Who want to trade three cards?" And you're going to trade them. You're going to get two three cards. You're going to try to get better cards. It's a lot of randomness. Uh, but then you will also be adding in these special cards. That also is very interesting because like some of them, if you know that there's two of them in the hand, for example, you're going to try to get rid of them because or else you will get no points. When you're happy with your hand, you're going to put them down and you're going to draw five more cards. And then after that, you're going to be bidding on those cards and either give up or try to be in the game for them. And if you then you're going to basically do poker hands with some special rules and all of that and you're going to get points and the player with the moist point mo most points at the end is the winner.
It's very silly. It's very the most fun I think was when you trade with another player
and then you forgot that you just traded with that player and you get the same cards back. Um, but the most fun was the our friend who we played it with, Jason, who managed to uh fold. Yes.
When he had like the best winning hand because he forgot what his hands were.
I think it's pretty cool because it's like it has a bit of trading, real time, memory, and poker. All in all,
I felt like uh I had to be pretty lucky to get anything that match anything ever.
Yes.
So, a lot of time I just like this is not anything. It's not anything.
But then you get some nothing.
I don't think that happens. I think you would have to be very unlucky to not get like a pair or
or two pairs, something like that because it's like it's not a really it's not a real deck of cards. Has like four or five of each suit. So it has like a lot of of the different of the same numbers.
I actually this was a big surprise for me. You want to keep it?
Yes, of course. Uh this is I think it's a going to be a really fun party game. it go. We played with four which work really well or five four players. I think it would work great up to six as well.
So that is that. Next up we have a little soldier.
That is another review copy. Are you ready? Yeah.
One, two, three. Boom.
Double kill.
Yes.
This is a very simple um like
it's a kids war game. Basically an introduction to war games.
I was trying to say kids friendly war game, but that doesn't ring very well. Yes, that doesn't work. But it is a nice introductory into this genre of games because you can play this on like a crowded tabletop and just like use whatever as components. That was fun. And you have these uh figurines and you measure them up with these shoelace kind of strings and you're trying to attack each other.
It has like a an evolving gameplay where you can introduce more and more. I think it's going to be good for a family style if you already are into war games and you want to bring kids or light gamers into it, but for me it was nothing that I need to play again. I think you agree.
Yeah.
Next up, we have the Battle of the Divas. Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two, three. Boom.
It's a keep from me.
Okay.
Because I want to play it some more.
I was like I was happy you did it because I was very onure. I really like from the same company. Uh what is it called? The Battle Lover Side.
Yeah.
Yes. That is a really good two-player game. And this is kind of like the second one in that series of games. First impressions were good. Not amazing, but I agree with you. You are two opera singers trying to be the best at singing operas.
Mhm.
Because that's what you want to do. And it had some interesting gameplay. It's a card- driven game. like it is basically again like they do like a tactical card driven game kind of like a war game but set in a different setting. I think I'm going to end up liking Battle of Versailles more
but I am agree with you. I would like to play it again.
Yeah, I'm um I think Battle of Versailles is really good but it's very cutthro I think. Uh so this felt more open, more uh like not that every small decision was like crucial.
Uh or Yeah. But that might be like beginners.
Yeah.
Yeah. Maybe I see more stuff when I play it more. I want to explore it.
I agree. I think I'm not done with it. We have another one. This is sand art. Are you ready?
Yeah.
One, two, three. Boom.
It's a double cow.
Yes. Tell me about this game.
It was a cozy game.
What kind of game is it?
It is a sand art game. [snorts]
Yes, a great mechanism of sand art.
Well, I thought the theme was really cool actually in this game because you're making you're making sands in different colors and putting it into your bottle and you're trying to go for different shapes uh to score more points. But you're basically, it is a action selection game where you're moving your action markers
um back and forth and you're trying to fill it up as efficient as possible.
Yes. I was trying to get out of your this is like a X and right game, but you didn't want to say that. You were saying it's a sand art game.
I wasn't thinking about that because that's like people be like, how do you fill up these bottles of sand? This game comes with all of this sand that's going to go everywhere. It's It was a fine game. It was It had It's an interesting kind of puzzle, but I don't see the need to ever play it again.
This was a lighter one. So, if you are into the theme and like um pattern,
it's not a bad game, but I don't think it's a very good game either. Next up, we have Twinkle, Twinkle. This is a review copy. Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two, three, boom. It's a double keep.
Yes.
Yeah.
We like Why are you surprised?
I'm so surprised you wanted to keep this game.
It was great.
Yes, it was. But I was just like surprised.
I was just
The only thing is again, it's an all the only thing all play is not very good at is making things that fit in the box.
Yeah, I I never have this problem.
There is no way to fit this. This has the expansion in it and there's no way to fit it in the Yeah, usually we're complaining about two large boxes. This is not all players problem. They do the opposite.
This is a tile drafting game. Uh you will be drafting tiles. It has a King Domino. Uh when you play with two, you take two tiles in a row. King Domino style where we the more to the left you take the the tile, the later earlier you're going to be. It has like some mechanisms of like the best tiles go to the right, but other than that, it's a bit random. and you're trying to basically fit all of these things depending on different criteria. There are different ways to play with different criteria and there's a lot of different variety in the expansion that fits perfectly in the box. But the game is great. Yes,
I really like it. Yeah.
Do you have anything you want to add about the game?
No, I I like the spatial puzzle element where you um
I don't know how.
Yeah, I think maybe we can fit it a little.
We can fit a bit more but not perfectly. Well, I like that you are trying to get certain things next to each other like that kind of puzzle. Like
we like special puzzles. Yes. And this is a simple one, very short, but I think it is it's like in the same way as King Domino.
Yeah.
Like in that kind of weight. So if you like King Domino, I think this is going to be a great one.
And I think it's a step up and like
in the complexity of the puzzle.
Next up is magazine.
Yes. Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two. Oh, it's a review copy. One, two, three, boom.
It's a double cow.
Yes.
Magazine is a kind of set collection game. Uh, where you are, what you call it? It is a
work placement. That's the mechanism. It's completely new, so I understand that you don't remember it.
I've never played anything with a worker placement magnet. Yes, I have. But your the thing about this is that the the object that you are collecting they are like being activated at certain times in the game. So you're trying to it's makes it more of a tactical game because you're trying to see what's available and when it will flip and then when you can like exploit the the yeah the symbol is it's very basic like the Sept collection. It's not very,
but the game was kind of good. Like I enjoyed the game. It It was if if if I played this
six years ago
or if I was more into lighter games, like it's a solid game.
It is. It nothing in it like wows me or does something very unique. But I enjoy that. You also have different things that you try to do like you will get special powers. You will have these special like the things that are the articles. You will then grab cards that will give you income or points. And you also need to have enough money to be able to buy different um like you're doing a magazine, you're going out and trying to write stories. So you need to gather the the the leads basically for those stories. So I enjoyed the game, but it wasn't anything that was like I need to play this every day of the week. For me, it was a little random because I was buying a a lot of the two value uh stories in the beginning and then I was thinking I'm going heaven for this because doing a lot of one thing is worth more and then I didn't see one of those for a long time and when they appeared uh yeah I
think everyone came out I think every single one came out during the game so you could if I remember
forget what I'm saying.
Next up is Leelines and this is a review copy. It's a Daryl Andrews from Wolf Gang Kramer based on an older Wolffe Kramer game. Uh, are you ready for the paddle?
Yes.
One, two, three. Boom.
It's a keep from me.
Wow. What's going on in this episode? I'm choosing K like two or three times a new kid. It is a pick up and deliver game with some auctions in it. Uh, so why do you like it? I don't understand. You'll be moving around this map and you will be picking up cubes and you will have these different contracts that you try to fulfill and you want to do more of them at the same time because you're going to get more points for it. Uh, and you can buy special powers. For me, it was fine. I had kind of fun when I played it,
but not more than that for me. So, you can share why you like it enough to keep it.
I liked it because you're trying to you see where the cubes are, where the color is you want, and you can be like, "Okay, Yes, you can do that there, there, and then I'm delivering. And when I'm stopping there, there are more cubes that I want. So then I'm going to use my my additional dye to pick up all from there. So that's like a satisfying way to think because was
and even though you get some colors that you might not need for fulfilling um your contracts, you can you use them to get like these special abilities that you talked about. And also what I like about the auctions is that also if you if you are the one triggering the auction, you will get something. You will either get like a new contract that you can fulfill or you will get like a bonus card that will give you uh either more points when you fulfill contracts later of certain kinds or you can get like a ability or one time use thing or something. I liked it. I don't need to keep it. Um, I I'm I'm I kind of knew that you didn't like it so much as me, but I I really enjoyed it. Anyways,
that was a fine game. I think you have the next game on the shelf or on the pile. It's Ironwood.
Ironwood.
Another review copy.
Yes.
Are you ready?
Yeah.
One, two, three. Boom.
Double cow.
Oh, that's my game. Yes. You were saying the name of the game, so I got confused.
Uh, you can say it now.
I remember it.
Yes. Now you talk about it. That is a two-player game. You can play it solo as well, I think.
Yes, it's a one to two player game.
Uh, this
12 plus 60 minutes.
This is an asymmetrical game. So, one player has different goals than the others, and you're trying to fulfill your goal the fastest. And when that happens, the game may end instantly. So, I played as the iron
and I played as the wood
and you played as the wood.
I was just like
I felt like I was playing the main like the bad guy.
Yes. I think that that isn't the case.
Like if you read I actually saw this on BG like there's like a whole discussion on who is the bad guy
and there is like a lot of lore and stuff in the game.
That's really cool. I like the thematics of the game. Uh but far as game playwise um it felt like a boring tug of war kind of mechanism. Okay. Um you well we got into a stalemate uh when we played a little while where I couldn't do anything about you winning and then I kind of basically postponed that.
I think you could have done stuff if you knew the game better like it was the first time we played. I I enjoyed many of the things but it wasn't
as exciting. It wasn't like it was more complicated than it was excited exciting like there is like these kind of head-to-head games like not too I can't compare them at all but like and match is also like a two asymmetrical one versus one two-player game but you can just sit down and play it instantly or so this was like it was a bit too complicated for what I got out of it. I enjoyed the concepts. Yeah.
But it it has some interesting like card play and and some haha with the things like that. But all in all, it was just a decent uh okay game.
Yeah, I agree.
Next up, we have another review copy. This is Twin Star Valley, which thematically randomly is set in Norway.
Yeah,
deep in Norway lies Twin Star Valley. It doesn't. But but they need
I don't know why they needed to put it in a country because it seems totally random.
I think it was I think it was
I think it was I think it was just like just like a fun thing like I think one a fun thing like I think one of the of the people I think they said to me people I think they said to me that one that one of the people had been in of the people had been in Norway. Norway.
I thought it was a beautiful with all the lakes and fs and stuff like that. I think that was the thing. Uh with that said I think I said it it's a review copy. Are you ready? Yep.
One 2 3 boom.
It's a curl from me. It's from you
from me.
That's interesting. But but they need
That's interesting. No, we spoke about this. I think that I think it was good with two,
but I think it's going to be way way better with more. This game does two things very interestingly. It feels like a lighter Age of Steam.
Yeah.
Uh in that it had like a lot of the same root building things, but with two players and maybe we didn't play aggressively enough. That's true. We ended up like with our own little roots and it was kind of hard and you went and it ended up in a position where you basically since I didn't see it and didn't build in a specific place you could just build there and wherever I would add new things to the board you could just take them. Yeah.
So that was kind of but that again like in steam I can do a mistake that loses me the game the first turn. Yeah.
Um what the do have which I think is really cool is the action selection mechanism. the board where you play your actions uh where you can also block but when you block I can use more to move over you and all of these kind of things and you will build you will get gamebreaking abilities. I think that with more players this is going to be a great lighter pick up and deliver game or just deliver game with team is as well. Um and I think I I would really I don't know if it's going to be a forever keep but I really want to play with four. Yeah, I um I don't think that it will be my favorite with four either. I think what what I see that is positive about this game is that it is a uh gateway game into those kind of games.
Um but it's not my favorite genre of games in general. You like it?
Oh yeah, I do. But I Well, it might need to play it with more.
I want to keep it and and play it with more people. Do you have another game?
I have one more game. It's
one more game.
Core of Discovery, a one to four player solo game. Uh, which is a deduction game.
Yes.
Are you ready?
Yes.
One, two, three, boom.
It's a double keep.
Yes.
I love this.
Yes.
I really like the deduction games. And I think that this is a game that I will have a lot of fun with later because it felt like what do you call a mind sweeper?
This is mind sweeper the board game.
Yeah. So you
another one about that was that as well but that was a uh not cooperative one. I don't remember the name of it. The one where you were had this map where it was kind of the it was the same.
Yeah.
It also was mind sweep. I don't remember it. Doesn't really matter. But this let's talk about this one. Oh this one. Coral discovery. A game set in the world of manifest destiny. Well, I like that it was co-op because then we could like not be annoyed when the other person was good at it and the other person was less good at it.
And what we did, we didn't actually even play co-op. We played solo.
So, we played with one character and just played it as we were. And we I was seeing the rules. I was thinking, do we need that second character? Like, especially when we played like the simplest scenario without special powers, you would get like more variety of special powers if you play like the two player mode. But I think it would be just as good playing it two players in as as a solo puzzle.
Yeah.
And I really want to play it more.
It seems hard. It seems difficult.
But very fun.
Yeah.
And of course, as in many uh it felt for me
kind of like a Robinson Cruso evolved. Yeah. Not in the gameplay. No.
But in the fact where you knew what you needed
like for a bit at least
instead of Oh, I got all this wood. Oh, I needed stone. I died. Yes.
Which which Robinson Cruso felt like for me this is but it still has like randomness in it. We were in a position like we need there to be wood there. It's like a 50/50. If there's not wood there, we're done.
Yep.
Uh but I really like this and this has the deluxe wooden boards and everything. I really want to play it again. Y there is so much variability in this box with like multiple expansions. There is also if you ever want to play it with four, it's like a traitor expansion. So I don't think we're going to play that. Uh, but it was a really, really good game and I'm happy we finally got to play. Next up is this one. This was a review copy sent to us called Yomi 2. I never played Yomi one. No,
this is Yomi 2. And this is a one to one. It's basically a uh Tekken. Uh, what is the other one? Super Smash. Like those kind of games. More of a Tekken where it's like a onetoone fighting game. Let's do the thing.
Yep.
One, two, three. Boom.
It's a double kill. This was very boring.
Yes, it was.
Uh it felt very random. I guess if you play it a lot, like it has variability. If you love those kind of games, maybe there is something here. But I don't love those kind of games because when I play a Tekken, I feel like I'm just mashing buttons. And that's kind of what I felt like I did when I played this game.
I just played some cards and saw what happens. And I tried to maybe a bit think about what I hoped you would play, but then again, I don't know what's in your hand and I don't know what's going to happen. It It's a game. I don't I don't see the appeal, but like it's not a it's not it it works, but it doesn't work in a way where I'm I'm happy with it.
