Revisiting Our Board Game Collection | Games That Start with E
Transcript
Welcome to Where There's a Wills, There's a Play.
I'm Ian and you may call me Casual Gamer.
I'm Stacy and your non-gamer gamer.
And today we are here with another edition of revisiting our collection with our games that start with the letter E. Um last edition was D and there was a lot of games that you talked about. This one I'm just going to tell you ahead of time there's a lot of solo games. So um we're going to jump right in.
up.
Yes. Stacy, we actually have a handful that haven't been played either. So this one is going to be a much quicker episode. I'm also going to combine a a group of games kind of into one discussion here real quick. So all right, let's jump over and take a look at the first game. And the first E game is Isla and something shiny. This is a campaign game. Um I'm going to be honest, I don't know a whole lot about it. I don't remember a whole lot about it. Um it is still sitting on our unplayed games shelf over there. Um got this last summer. I've heard about it for years, for a couple years. It came out in 2020. I heard about it for a couple years. Sounded really interesting. Um never really pulled the trigger on it.
And then last year during Prime Days it was had a huge sale on it and I had some points saved up. So I bought it and it over a year later it still sits. The longer it sits um
The less
The less likely I think it might hit the table and it might just need to be culled. Um I do want to play it. It does say the story explores some mature themes that may be emotional for some children. So I'm kind of intrigued by that. But at the same time, I don't know, the longer like I said, the longer it sits sometimes the long less likely you are to play it. So that's Isla and something shiny. The next one is Emberleaf by City of Games. This was my number two game of 2025. In Emberleaf, you are trying to Oh.
Oh.
Yeah, my board game geek likes to dig. You have this board and you are trying to um repopulate it. You uh so the brave Emberlings, you uh your mission is to rebuild your home in the heart of an ancient forest. To succeed, you'll explore the wilderness, gather resources, clear dangerous areas, and construct new homes for your kin. Um so it's got this really cool card dancing mechanism. Um I'll bring you I'll see if I can find a picture. Uh some tile placement, engine building, resource management. Let's see if I can get a picture of the player board. I think this has got one on it. All right. So, here are the player boards down here. Um there's four player boards here. And what happens is when you The cards have different abilities.
Some of them activate when you place them. Some of them activate when they slide. So, it's this uh thing that Frank West is calling card dancing. Um when it slides over, some of them activate when they fall off. And then some of them have some different um abilities that you can put uh some of the resources on to activate like an extra ability and stuff. So, really fun game. You're moving around this board. You're trying to put different um types of Let's see, where are they? Oh, over here. Uh different types of uh buildings out. You have some on your player boards that will give you more spaces to um be able to play more characters down. You're earning some bonus points. You have some gold cards. You have some extra people that might uh come in your thing. Um I really enjoy this one. Like I said, it was my number two game of 2025.
Um so, this is one that definitely is will be staying in the collection um long term. I really enjoy it. So, that was Emberleaf.
I played that one.
No, you didn't, I?
No. No. It's got a big It's got a big board on it.
Um the next four I'm going to just talk about real quickly the other these ones are all solo ones. Um and that is Oh, no, not quite yet. Forgot about this one. Embers Embers is a ButtonShy small card game where you are trying to um fend off these creatures at night around your fire. Going to be honest with this. This one is not one that has worked for me very well. Um I I can't figure out a strategy for it. I don't I don't know. It's not one that I enjoy playing a whole lot. This one is probably going to get culled when I look at my ButtonShy collection. I think it's a good game, you know, it it the concept of it and I've heard lots of great things from other content creators and people that I um really respect in the content creation world and that I um chat with quite often and they really enjoy it.
It's just not one that has worked for me. So, um yeah, you're placing you have these characters around the fire um and then they all have some abilities, but then you're trying to fend off these different creatures that are coming in. It's a not one that has worked for me. Probably one that's going to end up on the cull pile.
Maybe this plays better at multiple players.
It's a solo only.
Oh, never mind.
It's a solo only.
Okie doke.
Um oh, one more before the before I guess we're got a lot that start with that's look very similar up on the screen. Um next one is Emerald Skulls. This is one that Stacy has played.
I played this game. I do enjoy Emerald Skulls. Um you have a skull that you are trying to roll your dice to match what you um are trying to lay out. You have gold cards that you are betting on for the most part and you and the people you're playing with it I don't know if this is just a two game only or two player only game.
no, you can play with up to like eight.
Um but you and I've only played with two people. So, we bet on what we think is going to happen before the other person rolls. You lay your dice out and you are basically trying to earn your points by getting what is on the cards by betting correctly on the cards and by getting the um dice all the way up the skull. Um I really do enjoy this game. The last time I played it, I don't think I did very well with it.
This is This is a fun push your luck game.
Yes, it's a very fun push your luck. Very much push your luck.
Yep. The The person who's rolling it gets scores sometimes as well. You're trying to push your luck to get everything. So, you can see all these little um different colored like tiles kind of things. This is your betting disc. And so, when you bet, you can see these ones are stacked. This green person, it looks like, bet first. So, if this one hits, they're going to get 10 points. The second player person is going to get eight. But then you have this bonus at the bottom and this is the German version. I don't
I don't know what that says. I don't know what that says.
No, that is a different language. Um I don't I don't know if I can find It was just the best overall picture of it.
It's a great picture of it. Let's see if I can find the English version. But basically what happens is on your betting cards, um you have like these different things. So, this if um if this person I don't know what that one is. Oh, if they don't have any skulls, the skulls are basically wild. Um you score. Um this one, if you gem out with only skulls, you get certain points. Um some of them have Like I said, some of them have special uh things for the person who's rolling the dice. Uh Yep, so you're wagering in real time. So, I do think this one would be great with more people because more people would be betting on everybody else's role and more people are rolling dice.
But, this is a fun push your luck game. We really enjoyed this one. Has a pretty decent solo mode as well. Um, so yeah, that is Emerald Skulls from Thunderworks Games.
Are we going to keep it or cull it? We We didn't vote.
Oh, that's right. We haven't Oh, that's right. We haven't been voting because well, they've all been soloed. They've all been solo, so ready?
Yep.
Okay, sideways. 3 2 1 keep. Um, this one I have with the um Swindler's Chest which also um holds Goblin's Vault which is another Thunderworks game I really really enjoy. So, yep, this one is going to be a keep. Um, yeah, and so I forgot to say um this one I'm sideways on. Isla, um Emily easy thumbs up. Embers, that one's going to be a cull. Um, all right. Okay, so now Enchanted Ivy. Enchanted Ivy is a solo-only game. We just filmed our month in review and I talked about this uh in that. Solo-only game where you are trying to build a um an inn every round with some different things that you need to fit in. So, when you build it, you are um you're building this up and you can place your you're getting two cards and you can place them either as a wall or as a window.
Um, and then when you place them, you have to place a guest from your pile that you have in here. Each Each scenario has different guests. The scenarios have different scoring or the the guests have different scoring with them. So, they will do different things. So, like the painter Whoa, that zoomed way Okay, that zoomed a little too far. The painter uh you choose left or right and you score the guests in the painter's row in that direction. So, how are you know, so depending on how far away they are. Um, so you get points for it. So, every character uh scores differently. It's a really fun solo game. Um, I'm really enjoying it. It is very likely going to be on my top 10 games of 2026. Um, I'm just really I look forward to diving into it a little bit more. Um, but yeah, so you have two cards in your hand every time and you have two um you have two uh guests that are coming. Each guest scores differently. I don't want to spoil too much because it does have a campaign style mode when you you have two goal you have a couple different goals at every every scenario. You have two scoring goals and then you have two other uh side goals that will give you some more things and what you do is you can earn some stickers to put into your little book. And then as you unlock more things you get more doors and stuff. So, Engine and Ivy, that's an easy keep. It is one of my favorite games this year.
All right. Oh, we are Man, I I thought we were getting to the group of four here much earlier. Uh, Euphoria: Build a Better Future Edition, one of the few Stonemaier games I have not played. Um, I've been interested in for some time. They released the Essential Edition this year. I bought it, have not played it yet. Just too many games, not enough time. And so, uh I'm looking forward to playing this one. Some dice rolling hand management. Um, very looking forward to this one. The Essential Edition, they said it comes with uh two-sided boards a two-sided board, one that's more colorful and one that's uh I think more grayscale. So, have not played it, uh but I am looking forward to play it. All right. Now we're onto the group of four, which that was a lot before we got to it, I guess. No, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Okay. So, now um this group of four games, I'm just going to kind of bust through the names of them real quick. So, Everdell, Everdell: Emerald Isle, Everdell: Farshore, I guess Farshore, then Silverfrost, then Emerald Isle. So, this is base Everdell and then the first three games in the uh Edge of the Map series, which explores outside of Everdell. So, Farshore, Silverfrost, and Everdell. At the base, they're all a um tableau-building game, uh engine-building, and some resource management game, where you are sending little creatures uh forest creatures out into whatever you're playing on. So, in Everdell, you have this valley and you
have these trees. You have some different goals that you're doing. You're building a city of up to five cards. Um Farshore added in some different ways to put your uh put your cards out. And it had this little track here that was some scoring. Had some tokens here that had some different um scoring things as well. Um you still had some goal cards and everything. It It's Everdell at the base with a couple other things. Um Silverfrost was the one that came out last year in 2025. And Silverfrost went very complex. So, Everdell is a 2.83.
Farshore is a 2.82. And Silverfrost jumped up to 3. 2.4? 3.24.
Yeah, that's pretty
Um so, in Silverfrost, they added this whole snow mechanism. And let me see if I can So, they had this whole mountain. So, you have this mountain here. Um and this mountain has some extra cards that you can extra cards I really hate that it jumps that big. Like, it has these extra characters that you can use as a one-time ability. But also, it has this snow mechanism, where some of these things will get snow on them. Some of your cards will get snow on them. You have to get the fire um in order to get rid of the snow, to melt the snow. Your characters also have snowshoes that can One of your characters also have snowshoes. Um I really like Everdell. I enjoyed Farshore just fine. I actually like Everdell with the Mistwood expansion over base Everdell. Farshore I just fine. Silverfrost I thought went for me too complex for what I want from Everdell.
Um And then Emberland is the newest one. This is a 320, but I have ever heard a lot of people say that this is their favorite way to play just like a base Everdell game without all the expansions for for base Everdell cuz there's a ton of expansions for base Everdell. Um this has this track here where you are like an explorer and he's like and you're making your way through this. So I'm very excited to get this one to the table. Um some people who I've heard say that Silverfrost went too complex, wasn't for them, say that this is their favorite way to play. Um so if I were to go through these, Everdell right now is a thumbs up.
Farshore probably sideways. Silverfrost most likely thumbs down. It is going to probably leave the collection. I would like to play it one more time with at some point I want to play all of them. And I know there's one more edge of the map series game coming uh because they announced I think there were four. So I would like to play all of them just to compare them, but Silverfrost definitely it is going to be moving on. Farshore fine with. Everdell I really like. I'm really looking forward to playing Emberland. Emberland actually has an 8.4 which is the highest rating of all of them. So there is the four kind of base box game Everdell games that we have in our collection. All right, next is Everdell Duo.
So, still Everdell, but now it adds a cooperative campaign.
I played that one.
You did.
I wasn't a fan of it.
It's still Everdell.
It's It's It was a little I mean, we played it a while ago, so I don't have a lot of, you know, fresh memories of it, but it was a little complex for me at the time. So, maybe if I play it again, it'll be
so it's probably the high end of your
Yeah.
complexity comfort.
But, I remember the artwork was adorable. That was my main
is the artwork of the game.
was looking at all the cards with all the artwork.
I'm looking forward to playing the um through the campaign, and I mean, I've played a lot of Everdell, so I understand like the concept of the game and everything it really easily. Um yeah, we only played a couple games. I think Stacy was still trying to figure out like what she was doing, so that makes it hard when you're doing kind of like campaign style game. Um I do think this has a competitive mode as well, so maybe we could just play competitive.
That might be better.
You know, we can just play it against each other just to just so you learn it, and then I would like to try and work through the campaign. Um yeah, we didn't play it a whole lot.
I think this was one of the first campaign games that I played, and I didn't understand what a campaign game was, and so that made it confusing for me as well if
Yeah, it was last year. I mean, we had played Well, we had played a legacy game before.
Yeah.
Um but not a campaign game where you were just kind of going through different scenarios.
Yeah, so I think if I try it again now that I'm a professional gamer and all, it might might be a little bit better for me, but as of right now
I think if you understand the game,
Mhm.
you know, more before we jump into the campaign, because the campaign is cooperative. So, I think that was the other part is you could trade stuff back and forth and that I think was a little like, you know,
Like, that's mine. Why do I want to get rid of it?
And then the one thing when we do cooperative games is I really want to make sure I'm not quarterbacking. And I'm like, "Oh, you got to do this, then this, then this." Because then it doesn't feel like Stacy's playing. And I'm like, "Well, I'm just playing." You know?
passing stuff around as I'm told.
Right. So, okay, ready?
Yeah.
One, two,
Oops. I'm sorry.
two, three.
I I quickly
I'm going to sideways on this one as well. Um, I maybe I'll try to dive into the campaign solo and see how I feel about it. Um, but yeah.
It's adorable.
It's adorable. I mean, the characters are adorable. I mean, it's Everdell. Andrew Bosley art

in with this one. So,
But if there's a duo game that's out and I haven't asked to play it since we played it the first time. And
It's sitting over there on our new shelf over here to Stacy's right with a in our two-player only two-player max section. So, move that in there. Okay. That is Everdell Duo. Um, next is Expeditions from Stonemaier Games. This is a game I need to get to the table again. I've not played it for quite some time. Um, I absolutely love this game, but I've not played it for a while. You are exploring this world. It's in the Scythe world in the 19 in the in that world that um, uh, Jamey uh, uh, Stegmaier has developed. And let me see if I can get a picture of See, here's the problem. All the pictures are of the of people's painted mechs.
And the actual
So, another page.
Oh, there's there's
Oh, dear. There's a lot of pages.
okay, here we go. Here's a Here's at least a picture of the card. So, this has all the characters with all of their Max, and it has the game kind of set up here. So, you have the different regions. Um most of them start face down. As you're exploring, you're flipping the the regions over. The the the starting spot is at the top of the screen here. So, these regions are the north, and this is to the and this is the central, and then the south all the five southern ones are face up to start, so you kind of know where you're going. You are trying to get different uh you have one character and one mech. The and then you're trying to get some different cards. You're trying to synergize things so that they can bounce off each other. You're trying to get different um meeples that are different colors that do some different things. So, if you look on the bottoms [clears throat] of these cards, they um in order to do this, I need a purple. In order to do this, I need a yellow. Um I would say the Gears of Corruption expansion really helped with the start of the game cuz the start of the game was really slow. It added a hero worker, so you get some that and some resources to start.
Um you also have a tracker which has power and guile on it, which you're doing to using to do different things. Said have not played this for a while. It was We didn't do a top 10, I don't think, at the end of 2023. I may have um but it was definitely one of my top 10 games of 2023. I just need to get it to table again cuz I really enjoy it. So, that is Expeditions from Stonemaier Games. And next is Exploding Kittens. Exploding Kittens.
That's all I have to say about that.
Honestly, we have not played this for ever. I think I have this I think I have our copy at Oh, no. I have our copy at school because
We don't play it.
gave me the really fancy I got it for Christmas one year.
Um
one of the one of the kids who was in my who was in my board game club. So, we have got a fancier version of the game. We don't really play it. It's a fine game. It's a silly party game. You're you're laying if I remember you're laying cards down to try to explode the other person.
it like once or twice. It's kind of a mean game, isn't it? And so we don't really play mean games.
I mean you're you're trying to take each other out basically. But yeah. Um I mean it's a fine game. It's it's nothing spectacular about it.
It was huge for a while.
Yeah, it was it was really good. But it like even on here it's only in in party games it's only number 561 party games. So, it's got a 6.1. So, I mean it's it's only it's not even top 500 in party games on boardgame geek.
I like Doomlings better. Which is kind of the same but not really.
Yeah.
But That's neither here nor there.
Next. Also, one or one, two, three. I'm going to say yes only because it was a gift from a kid right now.
True.
Um but I don't see us really playing it. Like at school, maybe I'll play it at school. Maybe I'll Maybe I'll just Maybe I'll just take my copy or our good copy. But I have our other copy at school. So, I don't know.
It's one of those games that once you play if you don't ask to play it again within I don't know a couple months or so then it just didn't really hit home with me. That's how I see it.
All right. Next one, Explorers of Novoria.
I'll let you speak on this one.
Games.
Why?
I love the artwork in this.
Explorers of Novoria is a a tableau building, engine building game. Um It's a resource management as well. I wonder how I wonder what they have listed as their as their stuff. Action drafting, um end game bonuses, income, set collection, track management, worker placement with different types of workers. Um I would say they have some
I call it the do undo game.
undo, which doesn't even make sense, but So, what you're doing in this is this game is played over two phases over three rounds. In the first phase, you are drafting, you are taking tokens um out of a bag, and you are using one of them to place down here on the cards, so that you can take one of these cards. So, each one of these cards is a different type of person in your village. Uh the the concept of this game is you live in this area of the map, and then these three islands have popped up around Navoria. And so, you are trying to get different citizens to go on this adventure with you to go explore these three different islands.
Then, what you do is so you're going to take two tokens blindly out of a bag, and you put one on a card here on a color, and you get a card from that. So, they score differently. Some of them have some bonuses right away, some of them have some um end game scoring, some of them have some end of round scoring, and as you do this, they also all have a different character type. Humans, um pixies, beasts, and ogres, I think they have. Um and so, you can see these tokens over the side, kind of. Um I I guess you can see them on the turquoise ones a little bit better. But, actually, you're covering the turquoise ones and these ones are cut off on the screen. But, what you're doing is as you collect those, as you get a certain number of them, you you to put that up here, and you get some end game scoring.
So, in the game you are you are taking two of these tokens out of a bag. You're putting them on one of these, figure out which cards you want, you're putting the other one in the city. Once there's some in the city, on the person's next turn, you can either take from the city or take from here. And this is really confusing me because this is clearly not set up, right? This is just set up to show everything clearly because they've got tokens on here. So, in the second phase of a round, you're going to draft the tokens that have been placed out here to take them and put them on these spots and get more bonuses. But, if there's tokens on these spots, there should not be a full thing of cards here because that shouldn't have happened until the end of the round. Um so, that's why I was getting a little confused. So, two phases. First phase, you're blind drafting tokens, taking one of the two, drafting drafting cards, and then second phase you are drafting the tokens, putting them on these bonus things.
You're trying to get different resources. As you get different resources, you get to put your little houses out into these sections. There's three for each um island, and that helps you because at the end of the round you move back to wherever your furthest one is back. It also gives you extra bonuses. So, when I turn in one of each of these tokens here, a sword, a gem, and an apple, I get to do all the stuff that's uncovered. Here it's four of anything. Here it's three of a kind. When I collect resources though, I have to put them in different areas. So, I can't put all of them in one spot. Um and then so, you do this for three rounds, and at the end of the game you see how you scored here. You have some in game scoring if you make it to the end of the different islands. You have some in game scoring.
Um you have your scoring if you can collect a certain number of if you can collect five of a certain uh villager type.
Whoever collects it first.
Well, first everybody else gets the second one. First gets a bigger bonus. Second place and everyone gets their second place gets a bonus as well. And you have some end game scoring on some of these cards. So, really like this game. When we did our re-ranking of 2024 last year, this jumped up to my number one game of 2024. Think it moved on to your top 10 list as well.
this game. I cannot explain it, but I really do enjoy playing this game. The one thing I don't like about it is how big of a table hog it is. Cuz you've got your player's mat in the middle. You've got your your rows of three cards
Yeah.
down the side. Then you've got your cards that you're collecting for sets. And then they've got your cards. You've got your mat. You've got your player pieces.
This takes up a lot of space.
It's a lot of space.
And your cards we did figure out the last time we played it a better way to lay out the cards. But still like the two of us it takes up our table.
Yeah.
Like two thirds of our table.
So, it's a lot of set up for me. Not necessarily a lot of set up, but you've got to set all the cards out. You've got to set your pieces out. You've got to put the little the little collection set pieces out. So, for me, and this is just me, and he usually sets up everything. So, I
I set up all the games anyway.
Um it's a lot of set up, but the table hog part of it
It is a bit of set up. I mean there's there's a lot of stuff you got to get out.
playing it once I get going. I usually want to play, you know, at least two games before I put it away.
games usually over a weekend if we have it out and stuff.
I don't ever win, but that's okay.
Yes, you do.
Eh.
Usually because I overthink it.
True. You're I just collect. I'm like, "Oh, another orange. Let's collect another orange."
Yeah. So, yeah. Enjoyable game.
Yep.
There we do have one expansion for it which added a solo mode which is an interesting solo mode, kind of campaign type. There's different scenarios that do different things. They do have another uh expansion coming to crowdfunding later this year, I think. Um very excited about it cuz um I believe, if I remember correctly, it has something to do with dragons. And I love dragons, so I'm hoping they also have some sort of big box organizer with it, so everything can just go. We do have all the stuff we need for a two-player game in this, including the expansion. Um but yeah, so that is Explorers of Navoria from
like how the mats roll up and everything fits nicely.
Yes, uh everything does fit nicely. We do have the play mat, um which is in our play mat section. Um it is a big play mat, but it helps because you have all the cards in it, has the spots for it. It also has all of the places for the expansion, cuz the expansion has an uh another color card and has some other stuff. And so it has all the space for it on it, which is nice because if you're playing with just the regular board, then you got to place like that below the board cuz there's not a spot on the board for the last color. So, all right. Ready? 3 2 1. Th- This is an easy keeper. This is
Yeah.
probably top 20 game for me. I'm guessing for, you know, bigger box games, it's definitely one of your
said yeah, it's at the it's at the top of my time limit for how much I'd like to spend playing one game. And so by the end of it, I'm like, "Okay, let's let's move this along." But I still enjoy playing it. They're so cute. You can't but It goes by quickly.
I don't see this one leaving our collection anytime soon.
No. I like it.
both really enjoy this one, and it's it's got a decent solo mode, too. That's Explorers of Navoria. And the final one is I know,
which um we have this creepy creepy

look like our box.
Yes, it does. It looks exactly like our box. Um, this eye doesn't really look like it. They They got a picture as it was moving. They were clearly moving their camera or something because this moves.
Yeah. But in I know it's a trivia game where you lay out rows of cards and you pick you roll a dice and it tells you what color of trivia card you have to put from the pile and then the other person picks up the card, reads the trivia to you. If you get it correct, then you get that card and you collect those cards and then you replace it with the card from the top of the deck so you always have a full um treasure trove of knowledge on your table. Um, I love this game. I love trivia games and so therefore um this one's already a hit for me. Some
This is not what I was looking at at all. None of these cards
Ours is a old game.
Well, um this is from this is a picture from 2010.
It looks like it's from logo. That doesn't even look like it's
No, it does because it has the different colors that are the different colors are the different um Are the different are the different uh

of them. Here's
