Description

Hadara carries you off into the world of cultures and countries of this earth. Over three epochs, you will experience the transformation of your new world from a small settlement to a high culture. You want to populate this world with people who come from different cultures and continents as well as different ages. To bring glory and honor to your world, you should choose the persons and accomplishments skillfully. But you should not ignore agriculture, culture, and military power, otherwise one of your competitors might get bigger and more successful than you. Who will succeed first in creating a new flourishing high culture?

•••

Pros
  • The summary cards are great.
  • Production quality is nice.
  • There is a lot of strategy involved in this game.
Cons
  • The game can be slow with new players.
  • The back of the rule book is supposed to explain the cards better, but it doesn't.
  • Some rules are confusing regarding cards involving the first player (who is not the lowest-numbered player).
  • Rulebook needs work describing the cards.
Thematic elements
  • building construction with workers and resources in a resource-management/economy context
  • Cuban city Havana, modern era building/urban development
  • card-driven, action-selection with phase-based gameplay
Comparison games
none

  • Card drafting/selection — Players choose two action cards and reveal them; the numbers on cards determine initiative.
  • Center pool growth and phase structure — Phase 2 adds resources to the center; phase 3 replaces cards and cycles new numbers.
  • Color matching and gray-cube trade-in — Trade five gray cubes for any color to fulfill building requirements.
  • End-of-round card cycling — After each phase, the bottom card is discarded and new cards are revealed in order.
  • Resource Management — Manage pesos and materials; some are placed in the center pool and drawn from a bag.
  • Tile-based building — Tiles represent buildings with costs and victory points; placement depends on available colors and resources.
  • Victory point scoring via buildings — Each building tile shows its VP; endgame thresholds vary by player count (20 for 3 players, 15 for 4).

Quotes (from this video)
  • In this game, players are trying to build buildings using workers, pesos, and materials.
  • Here's how to set up the game.
  • Shuffle all the buildings and make two rows of six buildings each.
  • Each player receives one random cube from the bag and one peso.
  • Then place four pesos and three random cubes under the building.
  • Give each player their set of cards which include two summary cards.
  • These cards are helpful in remembering phases and which cards are used to obtain something you're looking for.
  • The player who is now the lowest number plays first.
  • He can resolve both his action cards in any order.
  • The cards are arranged in order of small number to the left and big number to the right.
  • These two numbers make up one number.
  • The top number is the victory points of that building.
  • Once each player has done phase one, phase two begins.
  • In phase two, all you do is place three new materials and three pesos in the center of the table.
  • This is how the center resource will grow.
  • In phase three, players will choose one card and place it face down on top of one of their face up cards.
  • The new cards are rearranged again with the lowest number to the left.
  • With the new numbers, players now play another round.
  • This goes until a player reaches a certain number of victory points.
  • In a three-player game, it's 20.
  • In a four-player game, it's 15.
  • The games last about 1 hour and a little slow paced at first.
  • Once all the players know the cards by heart, the game play is a little quicker.
  • The summary cards are great.
  • The production quality is nice.
  • The back of the rule book is supposed to explain the cards a little better, but it really doesn't.
  • Some rules are confusing as well when it comes to cards that involve the first player.
  • the first player is not the person with the lowest number.
  • Other than that, it's a pretty good game, and we're giving it a 6.5 on 10.
