Description

Game description from the publisher:

Waterdeep, the City of Splendors – the most resplendent jewel in the Forgotten Realms, and a den of political intrigue and shady back-alley dealings. In this game, the players are powerful lords vying for control of this great city. Its treasures and resources are ripe for the taking, and that which cannot be gained through trickery and negotiation must be taken by force!

In Lords of Waterdeep, a strategy board game for 2-5 players, you take on the role of one of the masked Lords of Waterdeep, secret rulers of the city. Through your agents, you recruit adventurers to go on quests on your behalf, earning rewards and increasing your influence over the city. Expand the city by purchasing new buildings that open up new actions on the board, and hinder – or help – the other lords by playing Intrigue cards to enact your carefully laid plans.

During the course of play, you may gain points or resources through completing quests, constructing buildings, playing intrigue cards or having other players utilize the buildings you have constructed. At the end of 8 rounds of play, the player who has accrued the most points wins the game.

  • You don't have to know or understand anything about Dungeons & Dragons to enjoy or appreciate this game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • 5 Things i Love About Board games.
  • It's the reason why i don't play games like Dominion as much as i might, because i just don't like the card shuffling.
  • i like that kind of thing! i recently played a game called Caravan which has, as part of the game, thief tokens, and you can use those tokens to steal goods from other people's camels, and two of the players - it was a four player game - two of the players got really mad that i was use - i DARED to use these thief tokens that are part of the game because thieving is not nice!
  • pay attentio, board game publishers - when i turn a box over and i see die-cut bits that fit together, i think "i need to get that game!"
  • i find that board games - playing board games - is one pastime that exercises my brain in a delightful way that feels really good.
  • The #1 Thing That i Love About Board Games... is when they light up my brain like a Christmas tree!

  • Pure worker placement
  • Really dope
  • Really fun
  • Cool concept of being a quest giver
  • Flows beautifully
  • Can be defined in purely thematic terms
  • Really smart stuff regarding limitations on fulfilling quests
Cons
  • A little dated
  • Resources maybe equalized too much
  • Expansion pretty much needed to make it feel modern and fresh
  • Theme seems kind of pasted on (acknowledged but dismissed as abstraction)
Thematic elements
  • Quest giver collecting and sending out warriors on quests
  • Dungeons and Dragons setting
  • Abstraction, but can be defined in purely thematic terms.

  • Dungeons and Dragons

Quotes (from this video)
  • And considering it's one of my favorite genres of all time, and we just did a review of Kinfire, which caused me to noodle on this top 10 list again.
  • But nonetheless, no matter how you slice it, Dune Imperium does a really great job of mixing worker placement with some light elements of deck building, effortlessly weaving together this economic backbone that works so well for the world of Frank Herbert.
  • This is some of the most fun worker placement that I've done with my family, with my friends.
  • Viticulture Essential Edition which I think is just one of the best purest worker placement games that you can get.
  • It just feels refined and smart and elegant and propulsive and nuanced.
  • But I still think Viticulture Essential Edition as is, is just one of the tightest, most easily recommendable midweight Euro purchases you can give to anyone.
  • It's just man everything I love about board games.
  • But the lantern action when you draft one of the lower value dice, which yes, they are less powerful dice, but still functional.
  • it's just a beautifully presented, tight, small box Euro that gives you so much to do in such a really pleasing package that just makes you frustrated when you play that you can't get more out of any of your turns.
  • Let me know in the comments below what are your favorite worker placement games.

Quotes (from this video)
  • What is a worker placement game?
  • This looks really really dumb and basic and simple, and why... why wouldn't everybody just choose 4?
  • unless there are sort of a bunch of rules, and unless your final goal is abstracted a little bit, it's not a very interesting game at all.
  • And that's why when you pull one of these off the shelf, and you see there's all kinds of stuff going on, that's the reason :a worker placement game sort of needs a whole pile of rules to make it interesting and fun!
  • If you're sort of slumming it watching this video and you already know all about worker placement games, tell me: what is your favorite worker placement game?
  • Nights Around a Table is the only place you can earn your pH B in board games.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's a different kind of game. Now, I mean, the game itself is a euro game, the style of it, and that is not particularly unique, but it's set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe and that theme is definitely a part of the game and that is something that is a bit different.
  • There are no dice in this game, so it's it's quite different.
  • Giving them a visual medium through video is a way to break down that challenge.
  • So um, you know, our series will continue to be about playing games and showing you that gameplay and helping you make decisions, but it's opening up other doors for us, which is really nice.
  • This is Super Dungeon Explorer. This is an interesting game because um it's obviously very influenced uh by Miniatures and it's made by a company that makes primarily Miniatures but it's attempting to sort of bridge the gap between miniatures games and the board games.
  • For example, that's 80 pages of rules, whereas this has about 20 pages of rules, so it's a little more manageable that way.

  • there's a few things more satisfying than telling someone your hobby is tabletop gaming and getting raised eyebrows that look to say that's a hobby then introducing them to modern board gaming and waiting for that moment when they say oh that was fun let's play again
  • my gateway introductory go-to game has been camel up
  • that was actually such a proud moment as a gamer having a game that I introduced to someone that they in turn then wanted to introduce to someone else and that other person enjoyed it so much that they asked to keep the copy of it
  • the mechanism where the camels stack on top of each other or underneath and whoever camels on top is actually in the lead it can lead to some moments of oh interesting when you're playing
  • Catan Carcassonne tickets ride and Dominion they teach virtually all the mechanisms you play those and you can play anything
  • it really depends on the person that you're trying to get to play board games do they play any kind of games you know video games RPGs card games if yes try to build on that and find the right game for them
  • pushing a game on to someone who's not interested in it is not going to do as much to help introduce them to the Hobby in a good way as kind of finding out where they're coming from

  • I love custom inserts
  • if there's one part of our hobby that I don't particularly enjoy it's not it's not punching at a new game or learning the rules or booking my housing for Gen Con although I don't really like that either no there's one thing I really don't like it's setting up and putting away games
  • I asked him specifically to set these up separately and I think you'll see why because now when I want to play I just take these sections of the insert out and plop them on the table everything's sorted and ready to go
  • One of the particular advantages to Robert's inserts compared to the other excellent options out there is that his inserts all come preassembled so as soon as you get them you're ready to put them in the box and start using them
