How this game feels to play
Description

Ra is an auction and set-collection game with an Ancient Egyptian theme. Each turn players are able to purchase lots of tiles with their bidding tiles (suns). Once a player has used up his or her suns, the other players continue until they do likewise, which may set up a situation with a single uncontested player bidding on tiles before the end of the round occurs. Tension builds because the round may end before all players have had a chance to win their three lots for the epoch. The various tiles either give immediate points, prevent negative points for not having certain types at the end of the round (epoch), or give points after the final round. The game lasts for three "epochs" (rounds). The game is easy to learn.

From the Box:
The game spans 1500 years of Egyptian history in less than an hour!
The players seek to expand their power and fame and there are many ways to accomplish this: Influencing Pharaohs, Building monuments, Farming on the Nile, Paying homage to the Gods, Advancing the technology and culture of the people. Ra is an auction and set collecting game where players may choose to take risks for great rewards or... And all this is for the glory of the Sun God Ra!

  • This game is super tightly balanced in terms of um you know a single mistake can cost you dearly and it's very difficult to manage all your different winning criteria.
  • Very clever stuff, but get boiled down to a very straightforward system, which is how I generally like my rolling rights.
  • It's all about very finely tuning that hand of cards to manipulate the state of the board to throw your opponent off as well as trying to help yourself.

  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Baron strong debut at number 77 as well.
  • Floriferous has actually been in my collection for many years, but year after year it does nudge up and up and up, which goes to show it strength because of course we play more games each year, which naturally makes things fall down. But the fact this has gone from number um 98 to number 78 and it's a new best foriferous 2.
  • kind of a passive rise for underwater cities. It's such a quality little engine building game from back onto the list from number 107 up to number 83.
  • NAR as well has actually again been in my collection for a couple of years now, but last year in its debut year, it came in at number 124. So, it's pushed onto my top 100 for the first time at number 85.
  • Get on board has come back into the top 100 as well, going from number 110 up to number 89.
  • another debut with Toy Battle at number 90.
  • Far Away, come back onto the top 100 from number 116 up to number 91.
  • The same goes with QE went from 120 up to number 92 because I did play that one recently and obviously enjoyed it.
  • other than that, we had a bit of a fall for games like Gold West, a bit of a fall for games like Mexico.
  • Even brass fell a little bit, just hanging on to my top at 100, going from number 78 down to 96. Now, I really like brass, but I don't really play it too often um anymore.
  • No Thanks, the classic little bidding or anti bidding game goes from a 104 up to number 97 back onto the list.
  • interestingly, um Subastral and Stellar, two card games I recommended. They've always kind of just held on onto my top 100. Um they are now at number 98 and number 100. Um which was slightly down from number 95, 96 last year.
  • the last kind of debut taunt game onto my top 100 is Tag Team. Um, a game I've reviewed recently uh on the channel.
  • So, those are all the new games this year.
  • So that's kind of why I didn't want to do the whole top 100 again because I thought, you know, it's going to be quite similar to last year's with a few jiggles up and down.
  • a lot of these more unique games are going up. card game seem to be climbing for me quite a bit and those euros may be holding their place or slightly falling but the great euros of course I'm anchoring themselves at the top of my of my top 100.

  • So, uh, this is my monthly video on the best games coming to retail, the best board games coming to retail.
  • I will be at PAX Unplugged, the board game convention PAX unplugged this upcoming weekend in Philadelphia. So, if you are there, please say hello to me.
  • So, you know, it's a quick card game for sure, but there's a lot of intrigue about how things are going to switch mid round and how you're going to play out the cards in your hands.
  • The interesting twist of the game though is when when the sort of pool of snakes gets too high, it doesn't bust the entire group. It busts the person that has drawn the most things out of the bag.
  • So, you know, it requires teamwork and uh precision and stuff.
  • I honestly think the worst aspect of the game is the sort of theme and the name Tricky Kids makes you think it's a kids game and it's not a kids game.
  • this is another game that feels pretty unique and different in the world of card games.
  • And so like I think this is a really good game to play at the holidays, you know, if you're trying to like it really um creates nice moments where like it's like a feelgood game
  • So, it is like, you know, for like a 20minute game, it's it's a pretty clever game of how you're playing out fruit and how you're gaining cards to add to your sets.
  • And it you are constantly making mistakes, right? You see moo moo and you're like moo and you're like no it's cat like
  • So, you know, a thinky game in 30 minutes.
  • In December, I'm going to start doing a lot of top 10 videos.

  • So, the fewer things you're saying you're going to do this turn, the earlier you will be in the turn order and that it seems so crucial.
  • But it is one of those where it's it's as you said like it's it's pretty simple. It's a lightish game but with a lot of great decisions and a lot of fun.
  • So it's a very I would say um tactical game. We're trying to see opportunities like oh now you opened up that opportunity. I should probably capitalize on that but that was not my plan to stop there.
  • It has frustrating moments.
  • And the mayor is always there. If you're a first player, you're going to get that mayor plunk down your city and he's not going to move. He's just going to be looking at your buildings and standing in the way of your building plans because all the other people decide where the mayor goes.
  • I recommend if you are into heavy games. If you're not into heavy games, go away. I mean, stay away from the game.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Auction — Or essentially hold an auction. You don't just get to take them. Uh you hold an auction for them, but you do get last bid.
  • Card Drafting — So, what you're doing is you've got a ton of these cards. You're going to be shuffling these cards up. And on your turn, you either take cards from this row down here or essentially hold an auction.
  • Hand Management — Players start off with a balance of cards because when you bid a one, someone has to bid higher. If you bid with a four, someone has to bid higher or you essentially get to take it and you exchange it with the card that's in the center and you put it face down and that becomes a big card for you in the next round.
  • Set Collection — And so you've got all your points here and you are going to be comparing them and making sure you earn some.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, these are 10 games. And of course, if we did this one in four months, it would look different because we would know more about the year.
  • So, I'm very um I'm curious about how they're resolving this mechanically because that seems like a little chaotic game. I'm not sure how that lands with me.
  • But the thing that makes it very interesting is that you're not just playing as the archaeologists, you're also playing as the tribes. So, it's like a not a time travel game, but you are doing stuff in the past that might I don't know how, but it might then affect the present.
  • So it makes it makes for them to be very unique and thematic games that I think and also it make great games not just thematic ones.

  • You know, once I review it, if I don't think it's going to stay, you know, and not that it's a bad game or anything like that, it just becomes a point where where, you know, at my age, okay, at this ancient ancient age, okay, how many games can you keep?
  • I just got a feeling that, you know, everything's, you know, they want to go digital with everything. I mean, what's the point of that?
  • I I I I I'm trying to find stuff that I can make consistent fun videos for.
  • I try not to be a gosh darn infomercial, okay? I try not I try to separate myself from the rest of the board game industry.
  • All I care about is doing my best to try to get, you know, have some fun.
  • My whole thing is, okay, it's a Godzilla with big minis. Yeah. If I can get my hands on it, I'll get my hands on it.
  • And my plan is to keep going as long as I can physically and mentally and just enjoy myself.
  • get back to the way it used to be in 2013, 14, and 15, you know, where we just we had fun.
  • And then we just, clean, smart, concise, and just keep it simple.
  • The board game geek hall of fame. Holy cow, what a train wreck that thing is.
  • You're one of my favorite designers of all time.
  • And we're we're making that push to to just have fun and have a good time. And we're getting as far away from stupid stuff as you can imagine.
