Pros
  • Backward thinking to map out point sources is effective.
  • Investing in actions for future points is better than single points.
  • Going deep in one or two rows for the Marquise is suggested.
  • Consolidating forces on the first turn for the Marquise is good.
  • Anticipating and planning for turmoil is crucial for the Eerie.
  • Placing Woodland Alliance sympathy in conflict zones maximizes income.
  • The Vagabond should hide and avoid conflict initially.
  • Crafting cards is a major source of victory points and powers.
  • Lizards should recruit everywhere due to their unique ability.
  • Lizards should save acolytes for big bursts.
  • Otters can charge a premium for cards.
Cons
  • Marquise lose board control and will never get it back.
  • Eerie faction loses worse when surprised by turmoil.
  • New players might make the mistake of hunting for single points.
  • It's easy to ignore powerful cards from the Exile and Partisan deck if not seeking them out.
  • Lizard players might get frustrated losing control of sawmills.
  • Lizard players might be penalized for moving into sympathy areas.
Thematic elements

  • Woodland

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • board control — Controlling the board is important, especially for factions like the Marquise early on. Consolidating forces is recommended.
  • Card drafting/market — Players interact with a market of cards, with strategic implications for buying and playing them, especially in the late game.
  • crafting — Crafting cards is a significant source of victory points and can provide powerful abilities or save actions.
  • Faction Asymmetry — Each faction (Marquise, Eerie, Woodland Alliance, Vagabond, Lizards, Otters) has unique abilities, strategies, and ways of playing.
  • Recruiting — The Lizard faction can recruit anywhere, a key advantage to leverage.
  • Sympathy — A mechanic for the Woodland Alliance that generates income and is influenced by conflict zones.
  • Turmoil — A mechanic that affects the Eerie faction, leading to board resets and potential losses if not planned for.
  • Victory Points — The goal is to reach 30 points. Points can be earned through various actions and mechanics depending on the faction.

Quotes (from this video)
  • it's definitely a game of efficiency and so if you're smart on your turns if you work on it you can get into a situation where you can do essentially three actions for every single turn right.
  • turn order in this game is incredibly important so you definitely want to make sure that you are paying attention to pushing yourself towards the back of turn order as the year starts getting towards the end so that you can push us off towards the front at the beginning of the year.
  • so money seems tight at the beginning and it is but in the end really it's the 18 actions that are really the tightest part of the game it's those actions making sure you're efficient with every single one.
  • in root you need 30 points to win the game and the backwards way of thinking about that is you have to find a way like where you're 30 points gonna come from.
  • so in general the rule of thumb for the marquee is go as deep as you can and one or two rows try not to build one of everything.
  • so a big one is people will not craft cards you should always like really even building your strategy around being able to craft certain cards they are that one of the best sources of victory points in the game.
  • your biggest strength is that you can recruit anywhere so you should recruit everywhere.
  • placing blocks so I'm familiar when you play cards you put units into play placing blocks is usually a raw deal so you want to let the other players in your coalition do the heavy lifting and try to avoid it to try to avoid it.
  • if there are cards with a lot of blocks on them they're definitely worth buying but consider not playing them right away because in the later game but what happens is all the good cards get snapped out of the market.

Quotes (from this video)
  • These are the top ten games that recently stood out from the crowd to us and are now on our radar.
  • Heartland first published back in 2009 was reimplemented in 2018 as Gùn Mò with a new theme set in feudal Japan but this recent resurgence and buzz for the game was likely due in part to a recent reddit post which listed games that people enjoy that are in need of a facelift and that reddit post led to the publication of an article on opinionated gamers calm covering the same topic and that article led to this segment about the game which you are watching right now.
  • Volt Robot Battle Arena is somewhat reminiscent of 2000's BattleBots.
  • It's just the way cartography works.
  • The shivers is the game on my personal radar this month because I mean just think about all of the things that I just said to describe it and what you know about me and my taste in games it's got storytelling it's got role-playing it's got puzzles so I mean it's got mystery you've got pop-ups pop-ups pop-ups pop-up books I don't know really what else I need to say but pop-up books pop-up books.
  • Is this Stockholm Syndrome in the card game Race for the Galaxy which comes in at number four this month.
  • also the vending machine is out of Fresca.
  • The game that made the biggest blip on our radar this month is that Terraforming Mars Big Box which recently wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign after around 23,000 backers raised over 2.7 million dollars to finance its production.
  • Like every gamer all of them the Terraforming Mars Big Bucks is not only a storage solution for all the Terraforming Mars material released to date including the base game five expansions and the first player rover but it also includes a set of 3D terrain tiles to dress up the game because you don't want your game to be too casual you want it to be dressed up it's a sign of respect that your game dresses up a little to impress you when you get together that was so weird why would I say that.

  • oh my friends hello it's going to be it's going to be a weird one let me promise you
  • the nicest thing about that is these are the periods when i'm at my most insanely creative because i'm doing anything i can possibly think of to not have to do photography on these projects
  • we board gamers do strange things don't we
  • the community it's the friends we've made along the way isn't it
  • this is a piece of 3d software that used to be a paid product and then i forget what happened with the company but it went free and the community i think the company might have gone out of business and just here have our source code it's yours now and the community went took that and ran with it
  • it is the most i think the most value that you will ever get out of a free piece of software it's the most capable free piece of software i've ever seen in my entire life it's nuts
  • i think it would help with some of the printer lines and things that's the reason i didn't want to get a pla printer was i didn't like the lininess of all the pieces
  • i just found that root was like i don't know somebody else taught it to me and i i almost never like a game that somebody else teaches me it's a weird thing
  • it's all fine it's all fun it's all good stuff like i say i'm super relaxed doing this isn't nice
  • this is playing playing a super complicated euro game in front of people and having to do math and not look like the biggest [ __ ] in the world not always the least stressful thing i can do with my time
  • the best way to sort of figure it out it's like this you know what i mean like if you took every single one of those is just like a page a page in the book right and but you can you can sculpt it that's all that a 3d printer does
  • the pricing on amazon for board games in canada is pants on head just dumb just not so stupid crazy never do it
  • because when you have the front and the invisible back of a face exposed like that that's — that's called non-manifold or when like faces like intersect in a way that like it's not quite non-euclidean but it approaches it like it would be impossible to actually print in real life
  • i'm no blender pro but i i get by i get by
  • i'm amazing this is coming together obvious no faith in me
  • i just want to do like a really natty thing and like cutting a big like carving line in there and being able to split off a piece in the model that's going to be like the easy part
  • it's really hard to get him to stand because oh he just broke entirely but that's okay he was just a tester that's not the real rules gremlin
  • board gaming and then it's like super natural to get into 3d printing out of board gaming and then it's once you're into 3d printing man you might as well learn how to make your own stuff right
  • this is this is the calm before the storm before i goof up forget to save
  • because i never know where i'll be for the next few days but maybe you learn a little bit of something
  • i hope it's not too late to do that it shouldn't be it should be fine

  • it's the experience that people have

  • The Windsor girl Crest is sterile as a unit that's had an irreversible vasectomy.
  • The aesthetic of the game is complete crap, it's like somebody has mixed up a lot of sick in a cement mixer and just splashed it all over the board.
