How this game feels to play
Description

Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese when their king Manuel I, on a visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, awestruck by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered that his own palace in Portugal be decorated with similar wall tiles. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora.

In the game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets; wasted supplies harm the player's score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a family weight game and it's It's Like a Dungeon Crawl Labyrinth type of a game but one that you can play with you know your your children you know they they say this plays ages seven and up so if you're looking for like a family weight game uh you are leading one of six different characters into a labyrinth all right tile by tile you uncover what the Labyrinth looks like so it'll be different each playthrough and you have to equip yourself with weapons and spells you got to fight monsters you got to collect treasures and then the player with the most treasure at the end wins so yeah that's a nice little family game for you
  • So it's basically an escape room a mystery in a box you know it's a it's a one-time use only thing but it's a fun evening you get an escape room in a box and you are trying to figure it out so these Advent calendars we got two of them we got the hunt for The Golden Book and the Mystery of the ice cave they are essentially turning that exit system into just a a game that you're going to Play Over the 24 days or 25 days you're just going to open a uh a spot on the Advent calendar get a new piece of information and try to solve the case over 25 different days so this feels like a fun family activity to do you know you can you can play it over the entire month of December and try to try to figure it out
  • So this is kind of a fun refresh to the original game of Azul
  • This is a two-player only game takes about 45 minutes to play and it is you are competing with another architect on building a majestic Cathedral so you are competing against each other it is an area control tile laying game set in medieval Florence and it offers a lot of heavy player interaction we are going to be messing with each other but it's also still easy to learn so you know if if you like a two-player game with uh a little bit you know heavier on the strategy but still also heavy on the player interaction than uh Basilica seems like a good one for you
  • You are battling and dueling with other drivers in the lawlessness of year 2070.
  • So in this game you are you know you're choosing your vehicle your vehicle has weapons and armor and all you know body styles different all that there's a lot of cool stuff to it and you're taking them out on the road and you are fighting against other drivers to uh you know to to destroy their cars and get around a track so that is Car Wars sixth edition
  • Between two cities is an interesting game where you are you're building a city but you're doing one city with the player to your right and one city with the player to your left so you're basically semi Cooperative with each of these people and then you only score for your weaker CI so it behooves you to kind of build up each City here and stuff like that so um it is a you know and it's it's one of the nice things about between two cities is it's a it's a strategy game that plays seven players so you can you know a lot of a lot of strategy games just don't play that that high of a player count uh so this one playing 1 to S so in the essential Edition it combines components from the original game and the capitals expansion into one cohesive Hole uh it features a bigger box than the original game different art on some tiles and a Score Pad instead of a board and but there are no new gameplay elements it just combines everything makes it easier for you to store in a bigger box
  • In fantasy Realms monarchs are competing to construct the most prosperous kingdom in the realm and this deluxe you know the deluxe box has updated every card with a Sleek intuitive graphic design the base game cards have also been updated to include new art and and it gives the entire game a fresh look so the this fantasy Realms deluxe edition does it it combines it includes the original base game the cursed horde expansion with the two expansion modules the jester and Phoenix Cards and 100 Art sleeves to protect all the cards included so you are playing you know in the game you're playing cards one at a time you collect beasts armies Wizards more so if you're a fan of fantasy Realms well now you got a deluxe edition
  • It takes me many many hours I spend 10 hours just emailing everybody and stuff like that trying to figure out what's coming out this month or what's delayed you know I have a I have a spreadsheet I think my November one right now has 60 games that might come out and I just got to follow up with everybody and see what's delayed and what's coming out obviously all the shipping woses continue and things are constantly delayed

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Drafting — Each action you will draft tiles from the central display. On your turn you will select one mat and take all tiles of the same type from it to your board. If that selection would leave any tiles behind those remaining tiles are placed in the middle area. As players select tiles from mats more will move to the middle. Instead of selecting a mat to draft from you may choose to pick all tiles of one type from the Middle, the first player to do so takes the first player tile.
  • Set Collection — Players score points by placing tiles by each other, completing horizontal and vertical rows and placing all five tiles of one type.
  • Tile Placement — You'll Place those tiles first on the left of your board and then to the right to score them. Once you've selected a set of tiles they are placed on the left of your board. if you drafted the first player marker put it at the bottom of your board. For every full Row Place one of those matching tiles on the right hand side and discard the others. Any incomplete row on the left leave those tiles behind.

  • Gateway Games well for those of you who do not know Gateway games are essentially games that are easy to uh kind of introduce you into the hobby get you involved a little bit more they're not too overly complicated and they're a lot of fun
  • essentially the game that you put on the table and you see somebody's eyes just Firework and all of a sudden they have a collection of 58 board games a month later
  • so it's a very quick game you can play it like slower if you want to but there's no need to you can choose the time and you place it and then place other tiles and you can all so place them on top of each other which is nice building it
  • I feel like not a lot of games you can rearrange like you always rearrange your hand and I am the chaotic person that never rearranges my cards so like if they can go like together everyone's like give us a moment we gotta make sure all of our twos and all the things go together in other games not Scouts and I'm just like nope this is my hand so this game is perfect for me
  • essentially what's really fun about this game is as the game progresses you're always doing something on your turn even when it's not your turn
  • it's very very satisfying with the marbles clicking together
  • it's a lot of fun to just grab the tiles that maybe the other players need or that you really need to make sure you're getting the right ones to score yourself the right points
  • that tight little finish at the end where you don't know if somebody's gonna end the game because they've made a horizontal line
  • the quick start guide is something that I'd love to see in more games because this game essentially has a two-page document that walks you through your first feature
  • this is a Cooperative real-time game
  • it's cozy yet delightfully crunchy in a way as well
  • it's so hard and my brain wants to do all the puzzles at the same time
  • for us I think I'm speaking for both of us when I say like it's just to luck based like getting those files that you want
  • I swear there was one game where we rolled 11 four times in a row like consecutively and everyone was just losing their mind and I was sitting there just raking in the points and it was amazing and I was just mad
  • but it can be a mean game
  • the quick start guide yes I want to see more of this in games

  • The combat system is really unclear in the rulebook.
  • It's too easy to get hashtags, making the game lack challenge.

Comparison games
  • Eldritch Horror
  • Duel of Ages

  • So the first thing we don't like about cabula is it's too easy to get those bleeding hashtags all you got to do is go into an encounter and resolve it and then you get a [censored] hashtag it's just like walking into a [censored] Co-op picking up what you want and then walking out and not giving a [censored].
  • I hate it when games aren't really clear and I don't really know whether I'm playing it correctly think of this game as a cross between Eldritch Horror Reload and Duel of Ages and you'll be halfway there but why you want to travel that far with us is anybody's guess.

  • Euro, potentially one of the best of all time, Castles of Burgundy.
  • It's two player. I wish I could play this more than we do.
  • So, right off the bat, if you like deck building games, this out of the box is going to be feel very standard.
  • The twist is how you activate the cards that you put in play.
  • There's two ways you can win the game. One is to be the first to get to the top of every mission card. Once somebody does that, game over, they win. Or be the last person standing after every other hero's hit points have been knocked out.
  • Four-player game is 90 minutes and that's too long for this type of deck builder.
  • They introduced shopping carts. The guy his grocery store wasn't successful but he he patented shop shopping carts and he had models come in and push them so people would use them.
  • The Black Friday sale is going to be only 25% off. So you still save money by putting in the RDTN code.

  • The amount of happy smiling families and people playing games—it was just emotional.
  • Board games are kind of, to have a good board game you're really focused on the essence of what makes a game good; with video games you can hide poor gameplay with flashy effects.
  • The first Magic: The Gathering cards are so ridiculously overpowered that they've all ever been banned from formats.

Comparison games
  • Everdale Duel
  • AO Original
  • AO Master
  • AO Mini
  • AO Stain Glass of Cintra
  • AO Summer Pilion
  • AO Queens Garden
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • bonus chips and temporary scoring tokens — bonu s chips are gained when factories are emptied; can be flipped during scoring to count as that tile type
  • end-game variability — end-game scoring includes multiple objectives beyond rows/columns/diagonals
  • roof tiling and pattern choices — twice per round in the first four rounds you collect pieces to place on your roof, choosing your own roof patterns
  • sixth patent row and expanded patent lines — a larger patent row (6x6 grid) allows more flexible placement and affects blocking strategies
  • stacking and limited top-tile access — from small factories you form stacks; only tops are readily available from the middle, slowing tile gathering
  • tile drafting from color groups and middle — you draft tiles of a color from a factory or from the middle, but the middle is Moon spaces and stacks, not a single pool

  • Takes gameplay from Azul and makes it a two-player game with enough twists to be different and interesting.
  • The drafting mechanism is clever, offering hard choices, especially late game, balancing taking needed tiles with potential broken tiles.
  • Stacking tiles on chips offers strategic depth as players can choose the order, making them pay attention to the opponent's board.
  • Dome plates add a layer of prediction and interaction with in-game scoring conditions.
  • Special tiles (joker and scoring) add interesting decision points and scoring opportunities.
  • Adjacent scoring encourages thoughtful tile placement and creates chase goals.
  • Chips add another layer of decision-making, allowing players to delay actions or get extra tiles.
  • The game is simple and not hard to figure out.
  • Ability to spend three tiles of any color for one tile is a useful fallback.
Cons
  • Difficulty in getting rid of the first player marker can lead to significant point loss.
  • Player boards feel flimsy and less impressive compared to the quality of the tiles.
  • The tile tower needs to be dismantled for storage, which is an annoying production choice.
  • Endgame scoring conditions are not equally balanced, with some feeling like traps or less fun than others.

  • Take That (indirect) — While not direct attacks, players' drafting choices can impact what is left for the opponent, and the first player marker can incur penalties.
  • tile drafting — Players draft sets of tiles from factories or draw from the top of the pile, with choices often revolving around specific colors.
  • Tile Placement — Drafted tiles are placed onto a player's board to fill rows, with adjacency bonuses for scoring.
  • Variable End Game Scoring — In-game scoring conditions are present, and end-game scoring focuses on completing columns, rows, or diagonals.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The first thing is it takes all of the gameplay of Azul and also those really cool little tiles. The tiles are great. And it puts it into a two-player game and it gives it enough of a twist to make it different and interesting and worth having the one over the other.
  • Now this may just be me, but I found it is really, really hard to get rid of the first player marker when you have it.
  • This is a good duel game. We actually really enjoyed it.
  • And so, I get it. Everyone's dealing with them, but some of them to me are clearly more fun than others.

  • A board game, really any board game, has two jobs, two responsibilities, checkboxes it has to tick in order to be worth its weight in gold in order for it to take up space on your shelf in order for you to pay any attention to it at all. It needs to be fun. I mean, that's category number one.
  • And playable means a lot of things in a lot of different seasons of life.
  • The playable part seems to take more and more center stage, more and more relevance.
  • So I've pulled together a list of the 12 board games in my permanent collection. the games that I consider fixtures in my hobby space that are extremely playable that I am not intimidated almost in any situation to pull off the shelf, teach to a new gamer, teach to an experienced gamer that I think we're going to continue and always continue having, owning, getting to the table and having a good time playing.
  • Whatever the case though, whatever you do, remember to do the important thing. Pick games to own that are both fun and playable and preferably start with the letter C if you can.
  • You're wrong. The reason why everyone knows them, at least the modern ones, is because they're fun.

  • This is clearly um an Srank game.
  • This is an amazing game that definitely deserves an S rank.
  • Can you give a really simple game an S? Yeah, I think you can if it works well and it does work really well.
  • I know almost all the cards by now. It's not that exciting anymore.
  • Azul is amazing. I love this.
  • This is one of my most favorite dungeon crawlers to be honest, and it's not very wellnown, I think.
  • It's just really luck based.
  • I like this a lot.
  • Cluster is like where you put like magnets in like um a circle made out of um some string and you are trying to like place magnets so they don't are not attracted to other magnets otherwise you have to take them into your hands and when you have no magnets left you win.
  • It's not a bad game but it's more like an activity right and not everybody likes it.
  • The theme sells it for me, right?
  • This is like Yatsi just a little bit more interactive because you have like uh you have like specific cards in the middle like 16 cards in a 4x4 grid in the middle with like the things you need to reach with your five dice by rolling three up to three times but you like put your token on it when you reach that so you block it for other players.
  • This was one of the most positive rankings within the last I don't know a few months because we don't have one single D title and we have only one title in C and this one is like nice curve here right so actually if you ignore C and D we have a nice curve here how it should be in a tier list just very positive

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • So, we are here to talk about what's happening over at Portal Games and what's happening over with Ignosi, who did not show up at Gen Con even after I worked my fingers to the bone putting down floor and Marty put down floor and we distributed product and helped sell a few of your games out.
  • So, that that's a perfect segue because uh the the game that you were going to have uh this year at Gen Con was Age of Galaxy and because of all the issues of getting the the game into port, etc., it just did not show up in time.
  • It's unbelievable how in such small box they put so much of the meat.
  • So, yeah, Age of Galaxy, it's uh you know, there's been a trend recently over the years to I'm going to make a Forex game that plays in a short amount of time, and I think there's been varying success to that.
  • So, yeah, Bohemians will be releasing. I I have a story because I was two months ago.
  • I wrote in this article that Bohemians is a casual deck builder is you are sitting with your friends, your family, you are just living life of your artist.
  • It is not a tournament game. It is not a you know head-to-head combat game. But I believe that this mechanism will be at some point used in this head-to-head combat game. So like the concept of having trash in the middle of the table and everybody can trash cards if they want to. It gives you full control of what you want to achieve in the game. And the builder is about the building a deck. So you should have a right to create it as you want.
  • So, I mean, you're right. I mean, the rule for the game is insanely funny and stupid and crazy. And I love it how Jasper designed this card for the game.
  • It may turn out turn off some people that will say this is too controversial. This is they they don't want to play with their familiar kids and seeing such a card pop up. Uh but this is how it is. This is Paris 19th century.
  • So, for next year, I have nothing signed as a exclusive distributor for America, but I have two very interesting prototypes of the game that we are working on and they are they couldn't be more different. One of these games is a cooperative game and the other one is hand-to-head combat game.
  • So, y'all heard it here first. In 2029, look for a campaign for Imperial Settlers 15-year edition.
  • Bonanza is one of them. And they they taught me uh that for the games that are your evergreens, you just care for them.
  • This is my pet project.
  • We were aware that this is a war game which means 500 copies the highest spin run we can do because it's a war game.
  • Both of us control the Germans. It's just, you know, when it's the other person's time, are you going to do you're going to try to help yourself out or you going to try to stop him by using the Germans?
  • My marriage was strained because of the ranking segment.
  • It was great to see Imperial Miners sell out from the table.
  • This is my dream. I I wanted this box to be re-released as a one box with everything.
  • Keep rolling dice and taking names.
