Description

Based on simple and intuitive hand management, Heat: Pedal to the Metal puts players in the driver's seat of intense car races, jockeying for position to cross the finish line first, while managing their car's speed if they don't want to overheat. Selecting the right upgrades for their car will help them hug the curves and keep their engine cool enough to maintain top speeds. Ultimately, their driving skills will be the key to victory!

Drivers can compete in a single race or use the "Championship System" to play a whole season in one game night, customizing their car before each race to claim the top spot of the podium. They have to be careful as the weather, road conditions, and events will change every race to spice up their championship. Players can also enjoy a solo mode with the Legends Module or add automated drivers as additional opponents in multiplayer games.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Five players gives them the exact amount of tension they seem to need.
  • Every alliance has to think not only about what it gains, but about what it's accidentally giving the outsider.
  • At five, there are enough minds at the table for bluffing to become a real art form.
  • The fifth player looks under control. And then one mandate later, the whole thing shatters.
  • With Five, the diplomacy stops being a side feature and becomes the game's heartbeat.
  • At five, when the company stumbles, it's rarely one player's fault in a neat way. It's usually the accumulated result of half a dozen self-interested little compromises.
  • Five gives the game enough voices to feel like politics rather than bargaining.
  • The table pushes back.
  • The friction [in John Company] sings.
  • At five, there are enough possible relationships and enough normal mistakes that doubt has room to grow.
  • At five, those explanations coexist long enough for paranoia to become fun.
  • With five players, there are multiple plausible suspects, which makes that conversation dramatically better.
  • The game feels like a desperate, barely coordinated crew trying to survive catastrophe.
  • That balance is what makes Five so strong.
  • If you throw me in the brig, you are handing the game to the monsters.
  • And five is where the table starts to feel like a real pirate crew.
  • Five gives you enough energy for that without burying individual characters.
  • The next scene feels less like what action do we take and more like, what kind of crew are we becoming?
  • Five makes the game feel like an ensemble

Quotes (from this video)
  • I'm referring to games where the core experience involves plugging in one or more modules that are part of the core game that have a significant impact on gameplay.
  • I'm not just talking about variable setups where maybe you have a few tokens or tiles that are slightly different than in a previous game.
  • I'm also not talking about player asymmetry where each player is a different character or different faction, things like that.
  • I'm also not including expansion modules.
  • I'm talking about the where the core game is designed around the idea where modules shape the core game experience.
  • This game is essentially infinitely modular.
  • this is perhaps the the best example that I'll have on this entire list of a truly modular game where the core experience of Shackleton base depends on you plugging in these three modules that have a significant impact on the game.
  • To say this is a large game is an understatement, but with these different region modules comes a ton of variety.
  • you are plugging in different elements to create a new unique experience rather than a scenario where it says like this is the scenario that you're playing.
  • all modular setup that all that all modular setup does take some work to put together and reset.
  • I think the takedown is almost worse because you're like, "Oh, we finished playing the game. Now we get and you have to sort out all of these different components."
  • I think that is a great space for modularity in a game like this.
  • You can really play the same temple track over and over again in Lost Arms Vernac and get plenty of replayability out of it.
  • I think Clank I think is my favorite modular game where just with the map modularity uh just flipping over which side of the board you're going to play on um can add can really make each game feel quite different every time you play.
  • We are talking about big modules that you are plugging into the game in from that are built into the core experience and they are making the game feel different or unique or harder or easier um or shorter or longer.

  • Spinning out can cause real player-elimination feel; recovery is slow, which can stall competition.
  • Occasional incongruities between theme and mechanics (e.g., certain corners not represented, legend system unclear).
  • Component quality is mixed (thin boards, fragile insert).
  • Pricing perception fluctuates; MSRP cited as high for what is offered.

  • Deck Building — Starting with a basic deck, players add, trash, and manage heat/stress cards to shape future hands across laps.
  • Deck Trash / Top-Decking — Upgrade variants can trash cards from the top of your deck to accelerate deck thinning; heat is permanently removed when trashed.
  • Gear-Based Card Play — The gear you are in determines how many cards you can play; movement equals the sum of played cards.
  • Hand Management — Each turn you examine seven cards and decide how to play them in gear-limited actions.
  • Heat management — Heat cards are tracked as a resource; you gain heat from certain actions and must cool by downshifting; heat cannot be discarded at will.

  • Simultaneous action selection — Players secretly choose gear adjustments at the same time, then reveal and execute.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Heat is made by Days of Wonder for widespread appeal and they got that initial charm with how good-looking this game is.
  • The first is that heat does the speed manipulation idea well for some cool hand management of your seven cards.
  • My personal score for Heat is going to be a 5 out of 10.
  • recommener score of 7 out of 10.
  • Final pro is that this game really does run true to time. It really takes about an hour.
  • Heat is actually a fair substitute for the drafty game seven wonders.
  • Is the game overhyped from 2022? I would say probably a little bit.
  • But I've been seeing its massive continuous success on BGA.
