Description

Cities on the moon! This will be humanity's crowning achievement. At last, no longer bound to the Earth — the moon, a stepping stone to the stars. The rockets are loaded with supplies and colonists; the robots are programmed and ready. Everything has been planned down to the tiniest detail, and there is no chance whatsoever of failure. To the moon!

Moon Colony Bloodbath is an engine-building, engine-losing tableau game, with a shared deck the players build that makes things happen, many of them bad things that kill people in your moon colony, but some positive, and some that let you build up.

More specifically, each turn one card is revealed from the shared deck, which starts with four work cards, two trouble cards, and two twists. For work, each player takes an action of their choice simultaneously: mining for money, farming for food, research for cards, build a new building, or restock boxes on buildings. Twists vary from one game to the next. Trouble adds a new event card to the deck: hunger, paperwork, glitches, accidents, leaks, power failure — whatever can go wrong will go wrong, then whenever the deck is shuffled, you can prepare for all those events once again.

Players can add cards to the shared deck, too, whether perks that are only for you or developments that affect all players.

The game lasts until one player's moon colony has no people remaining, or until the players reach the bottom of the event deck. At that point, the player with the most survivors wins.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is a game we introduced to my parents, thinking that they would like it, and they ended up liking it.
  • Now, we recently got back from UKGE, and Not back. We we recently just finished UKGE.
  • This is a recap for the top games of May.
  • in the month of May, we have played 31 different games.
  • I think you did, too. I was looking at it, and cuz there was a few that I think we just rushed at the convention that I forgot to log.
  • This is a good reminder that if you
  • This game really caught my eye at our preview night that we were at, and it's essentially just these beautiful flower cards
  • It's super simple, super easy to play, but I have really enjoyed just like the simplicity of that and it's beautiful. Small box, beautiful game.
  • It was so beautiful that we were so immersed in it I forgot to take a lot of b-roll and it's my number two.
  • That hasn't happened in a while. It has not, I don't think.
  • And this game is a game that we do not have, but we recently got a 3D printer and the whole point was so that I could make like well, 3D prints. But part of that is inserts, board game inserts.
  • it was fantastic.
  • The really cool aspect of this game though is the timing of everything that you do.
  • resources are very tight in this game. So, that's the other thing is you have to be very clever with how you use everything.
  • I'll allow it. It was very fun.
  • It's definitely more layered. It's more layered than Suburbia. Yeah. Yeah.
  • Like Sweet Land's is much more complicated.
  • which has been hopping up because it was nominated for the Kennerspiel. I think it's number one on the BGG hotness right now.
  • Which it very very much so deserves because it is a fantastic game.
  • Do not get scammed. Be aware.
  • what have you been playing this uh past month? What have you really enjoyed? What was your favorite? What games are you hoping to get to the table this month?

Quotes (from this video)
  • We actually really enjoyed the turtle decks.
  • Too many tabs. Close some of these things.
  • Wow, that is not really helping.
  • I I kind of need to hear what's going on.
  • Um, I guess I could have him run it. It'd be kind of dull.
  • I did work on the uh collar. I kind of feel like I need to do a little bit more dark uh up into the V's of the fur.
  • It's pretty cool. I'm really excited for Deborah on that.
  • So, we mostly buy the games that we do on the show.
  • Well, we did the first level, but at a higher
  • This is not fun.
  • The way you do it for, um, at least the machine we use now, um, and we've always done that, we we, uh, use a, um, box that converts HDMI to um, dang it, paint is on the wrong side again.
  • My goal is to finish wave one for everybody that I have.
  • I fractured my heel a year and three months uh you and nine months ago.
  • And so, uh, so how many how much characters I have to paint? Oh, I have so many to paint, Chris.
  • But you get less brush strokes. And then what I do for the final thing, so I guess essentially it's going to be two stages since I'm doing two thin coats, um, is I also use a speed paint or contrast paint over this.
  • So, my goal is to get back around roughly before it's dry.
  • And that's 100% valid.
  • But you can see here it's rubbed through here. Hold on. It's rubbed through here a bit, but it's smooth and it looks pretty good.
  • Yeah, this one's actually pretty good already.
  • So, the rim of the base look. It looks really quite good.
  • My fingers need to be cleaned.
  • Wow, that black paint just coming off from my fingers too.
  • Boy, that is not a good intensity for these.
  • Well, awesome. Thanks for joining me today.
  • Thanks for putting up with the little technical glitches.
  • It's a Kenner nomination. I'm not sure. I don't know what will win.
  • Let's see here. Uh following. Hooray.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This will be a little bit of a shorter vlog than usual.
  • We have a whole separate video where we talk about that, and we take you in gratuitous detail through a slideshow with everything we saw.
  • So, we're not going to talk about that here.
  • It's a big hype loop.
  • It's a filler card game. Simple cards, simple rules, but but quite a clever way of thinking through it.
  • It fits into that good category of a thinky little filler.
  • It's gorgeous looking.
  • Multi-use cards always my favorite, right?
  • Very fun, light-hearted game.
  • It's just really fun and chaotic, and um it's almost like push your luck, but like everyone's on the table like 'Yeah, like at the first half maybe.'
  • I think without that event, that that event adds a lot to the game. So, I think it's really well designed.
  • This game is um, this year's release by Hobby Japan. So, it's a Japanese publisher. You know how the uh, Japan or Japanese games could be a little quirky.
  • It's just so quirky. It's just so fun.
  • This might be Fabio's lightest games that I've played because the other one is like Trajan Circle, Marrakesh, Santa Maria. Autobahn, which is like quite heavy, and Shackleton Base.
  • Even though it it looks Um it doesn't look thematic. It's not artistic, but it feels thematic and yeah, it feels fun. It's very approachable.
  • I just love how um interactive it is and how this core is simple, but very effective.
  • Highly recommend it.

  • These are the games that I played for the first time in the first half of this year, and these are my favorites.

  • This is such a clever clever concept. It's what drew me to the game.
  • And so you're kind of you have this built-in timer for the game of will the game spell priorities before the players do.
  • I love that you're scoring based on what other cards are played are played by other players and you're scoring based on what you actually drafted. Such a clever system.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Moon Colony Bloodbath is a engine building, engine losing, deck building game.
  • you must protect your colonist because, well, bad things are going to happen. They are inevitable where you will be slowly losing your colonists.
  • It's so quick and simple, but I think there's just a lot of replayability within just that engine as the engine building aspect, trying to find ways to squeeze out more colonists so that you can survive one more round.
  • Moon Colony Bloodbath just really does so well in capturing the feeling of just one more round, just one more game.
  • it just feels more quick, a lot more streamlined where you're not waiting for everyone for a long period of time.
  • In Neponatu, you will be creating factories producing goods all across Japan.
  • And the goods that you produce across the lands of Japan will create influence in that area.
  • In Nepon Zipatu is a game that has completely surprised me.
  • But when I sat down played it with my wife, I was completely blown away.
  • you have to pay attention to the different amount of colored workers that you have on your player board. Because when you consolidate and these workers leave, you have to pay them now. And you have to pay every worker $3 for every different colored worker.
  • I love how streamlined the actual actions are, as you're just grabbing a worker and doing said action that's available to you where the worker was.
  • the game offers these two different aspects of just gaming in general and it puts it all in one experience.
  • Nepon Zipatu is just a game I can't stop playing. So, so good.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I think it's really neat that a game like this has progression.
  • So, it gives you this feeling that I think is so brilliant in a push your luck game, where you have a chance, even if you have not rolled well throughout most of the game, that you can come down to the wire in that last turn, and you have a chance to win, even if you have two points over the course of the game. Someone else has 50. You can still win if you roll seven bells.
  • And I thought that was a really clever mechanism to put in the game, where previous to this, you always just wanted the force to be with you.
  • I really like the game that the game presents this fairly organic timer to you.
  • But I thought this was really really clever that you're scoring these special abilities based on the current trick as well.
  • But I just love that without any shuffling.
  • And I think that's such a clever twist that I really want to use it in the game where you are kind of crafting a deck but you're inserting cards in specific places in that deck and how that matters.
  • So, there's this nice, slight catch-up mechanism.
  • And so, uh I just like that. I like positive player interaction, but I also like close games, and I think this does it in a really nice way.
  • I think what this does is that lets players be themselves.
  • And I think that is so cool that these cards give you that flexibility.
  • I think that is so clever that you have a few chances to take over your opponent's cards.
  • I really appreciate when games do this, especially fairly complex games like Sanctuary.
  • And uh yeah, I think this this short-term goal system um of things to pursue, I think, is really really helpful in Sanctuary.
  • There's this shared trauma in this game cuz when this robot comes up, it hurts everybody.
  • I think it's such a clean system.
  • I really love the variability that adds and how it kind of can shape the decisions that you make on any given game. It's such a clever system.

  • It's because it is at the same time both very strategic and very silly.
  • So there's this really interesting accordion effect to the game where the first half you're building, building, building and then the second half you're just losing, losing, losing.
  • Whoever hung on the best and lost the least wins.
  • I love the constant tension in this game because we're all sharing that same deck of cards and so everybody's nervously looking at it like, "Oh, what's going to FLIP OVER NEXT? OH, OKAY, I'M SURVIVING. YES."

  • Unlike other rankings that I know and love, like on BoardGameGeek, the hotness, um the hotness is kind of dominated by games that are coming out in the future, rather than games that are already that people are actively already playing.
  • I wanted a power ranking hotness-style list about games that we've already played, and now that we've played them, we want to play them again.
  • The bottom three get knocked off, and next month they will be replaced by Terraforming Mars, Sanctuary, and Dune Imperium.
  • I think that is really clever. I kind of want to see more games with this discovered asymmetry that impacts all players during the game.
  • This is the number two game that people have played that they want to play again.
  • A real classic game here that has been given a little bit of new life thanks to I think the special edition, which is really stunning.
  • I think these are games that people play. Like, people aren't I don't think everyone is playing Galactic Cruise every night. And even if you are, you're probably mixing in a lighter game every now and then. And those games I think are relevant are are relevant, too.
