Description

In Race for the Galaxy, players build galactic civilizations by playing cards representing worlds or technical and social developments.

Each round, players secretly and simultaneously select an action card corresponding to one phase of a round. These phases let players draw cards, play cards, add goods to worlds, or consume goods for VP chips. Only the phases chosen will occur that round. Every player may act in a phase that occurs, but the players who chose that phase get a bonus.

Game end is triggered either when a player has built a civilization of 12 cards or when the pool of VP chips is exhausted. Each player then totals the victory points in their tableau plus any VP chips earned during play.

Detailed Overview
Race for the Galaxy tells a story of galactic discovery and expansion through a single deck of cards. Every card in the deck represents either a world that you might settle or a development that you might implement. Cards placed into your tableau represent your current achievements -- worlds you have colonized, technology you now wield -- while cards in your hand represent the options currently available to you.

To play a card, discard the number of cards equal to its cost, representing other opportunities you must forgo to concentrate on your current course. Once in your tableau, a card provides special powers during the game and, at the end, its listed number of victory points. Many worlds, once placed, also produce goods that can be traded for more cards or consumed for VP chips.

Race for the Galaxy is played in rounds. In each round, you and your opponents secretly select an action phase for the upcoming turn. You can choose to:
• Place a world in your tableau with settle or a development with develop.
• Produce goods on worlds with produce.
• Consume goods for VPs with consume.
• Add cards to your hand with explore or by trading a good.

Each round, only those phases that are selected will occur -- but they'll occur for everyone. Selecting a phase both ensures that it occurs that round and gains the selecting player a bonus.

Round follows round until someone builds their tableau to twelve cards, or until the last VP chip is claimed. The victor is the player with the most VPs.

2018 UPDATE
The second edition of the game is improved for CVD (color blindness) and includes 5 revised cards from the original version and 6 New Worlds promo homeworlds. The promo homeworlds and first edition compatible Revised Cards are both available for purchase through the BGG store.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Telestrations is one of the greatest games ever made.
  • Legitimately, I think probably the greatest party game ever made. And one of the greatest games ever made.
  • Telestrations, which is just telephone with drawing, is in terms of pure fun, might be the funnest game ever made.
  • So good. Tiny Towns kind of plays a rage con. I love this game. I'm playing a butt ton on BGA right now.
  • Verdant such a good game, man.
  • Verdant of the Calico Verdant Cascadia line Verdant always feels like the one that gets left behind and I think it's my favorite of the three.
  • Viticulture I taught Viticulture I would play Viticulture Tuscany. It was great freaking love Viticulture.
  • The White Castle absolute banger.
  • The rule I and maybe this changed from the original version and the version we have, but in the version we are playing, when you take the action where you collect the blue meeples, and you're multiplying the amount of blue meeples you you collect times the amount of blue building spaces in the nine, including the space you're on, spaces, you can add cards to that.
  • YES. I DID NOT KNOW these things.
  • There were multiple rules in like Pandemic we used to play wrong cuz we read the rulebook once a long time ago, but just never read it again.
  • Someone in the comments is like looking at these cards Murph might be OP I'm like I don't know I don't know I don't think so I think we're I don't think they're that I don't think they're that great. I think we're fun and interesting but I don't think we're the strongest characters ever made.
  • I love the theme of it a lot it looks really cool it looks really cool.
  • I picked up Alhambra all time classic for me. $20 here.
  • You don't really seem to like solo games that much. I really like it. I think you'd find the card play interesting.
  • I enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed it. Me and Paula enjoyed it. Or no, Paula was just watching. Was it just you and me playing?
  • I just feel like Dinosaur World, they had the opportunity to clean up Dinosaur Island, and they just made it bigger. And I feel like it was a it was a very big missed opportunity.
  • Necessary is such an interesting question.
  • However, the game is a lot better.
  • We're not going to play without the expansion.
  • literal everyone says no one says essential. I don't think it's essential. I think it's if you got the money and you like A Feast for Odin, definitely do it. You'll never go back.
  • it levels up the game.
  • And then they just redid it again. It's it's very confusing what they're doing with that.
  • I really like Onirim. I really like Castellion.
  • A lot of other people don't like that game. It's like one of the lowest rated Oniverse games.
  • The general plan is that every year we do a Kickstarter there will be a new game.
  • I really like Onirim.
  • So, naturally being at a resort has got me thinking about like a game centered around like a resort and stuff

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

Quotes (from this video)
  • A game can top every ranking, win every award, sell out every print run, and still sit on your table and leave you completely cold.
  • A game being widely loved does not mean it was built for you.
  • Your table is not our table.
  • If we are hard on a game you adore, that is a data point about us, not a verdict on you.
  • Race for the Galaxy instead.
  • It delivers the same engine-building tableau satisfaction, the same thematic richness of building a galactic civilization card by card in under 45 minutes.
  • Brass: Birmingham.
  • It is a game I admire far more than I enjoy.
  • Dune Imperium again.
  • Two of our 11 alternatives are the same game. I think that tells you something honest about what our table actually wants out of an evening.

  • God damn, I suck at this.
  • It was okay.
  • I was close
  • I'll give myself the four points. I knew it was Eggertspiele, but I was trying to do both the publisher and the designer at the same time.
  • Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is Reiner Knizia as the designer.
  • It's not, dang it.
  • Oh my god. Oh my god, I'm so mad. I'm so mad.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The last person who has experienced a quantum anom anommy.
  • If it starts off the board on your turn, you drop it on.
  • He has his own ambitions.
  • Every single one of these salvages you cash in, you can get an additional card to trick out your ship.
  • My plan for success in space is I'm going to make my way this way and collect as much of this salvage as I possibly can and cash in for big fame, money, and love.
  • Moving my ship through hypermost space by dropdriving it earns me two monies, two space credits.
  • You could jettison the one that you just picked up as well.
  • I like it. Well, you know, newer is better. That's what they say.
  • An intimate encounter.
  • The difference between the two values rolled is the damage the losing ship takes.
  • So, the pirate takes two damage.
  • And that will just destroy the pirate ship because it only takes one to destroy a pirate ship.
  • So, the pirate is destroyed just like in a game sense, not in like an actual physical sense.
  • I have to keep playing with this piece that you've thrown in the trash.
  • Space yours.
  • A whole bunch ended up over there.
  • It's like one of those pool billiard shots where you make the ball pop over, the Q- ball pop over.
  • My rules? You've thought of everything.
  • That was pretty sad.
  • It got exactly where it was going to go.
  • So, we got you on the pink planet. We got me on the blue planet. Who goes first?
  • The last person who has experienced a quantum anomaly.
  • I think you just did. So, why don't you go first?
  • I will jettison this one back into space.
  • True. True. But just for the the sake of chaos, my crew jettisoned the old one and replaced it with an identical replica.
  • I love the chaos so much.
  • Choices.
  • All right. Bye. One, two, three. Oh, hey. Oh, that locked out. I just got to go pick them up again.
  • Well, have fun. Uh, that's the end of my turn. I've done all my things and introduced an anomaly just to combat your chaos a little.
  • Such balance in nature.
  • Yes. Yes. Yes. Then now at the start of every turn, you can attempt to detonate mine.
  • So, let me see. So, there's only three mines left, and it's these three right here, which all are aimed at me.
  • I'm very happily quite far away from them.
  • You know what I'm going to do, though? I'm gonna try and at least flick these out of this area.
  • Probably not hitting myself. So, let's see if I can get this to land way over there.
  • You might be able to hit me. Who knows?
  • The rules specifically say there are no doovers. So, if you like do a bad flick and do nothing and just hit the pad, sorry.
  • Oh, the rules call that out.
  • That's pretty sad.
  • So, I can't use my drop drive and earn two more credits because I'm Captain Murk Fizz the amazing.
  • Not so amazing with an empty cargo hole.
  • Okay. So, I'll pick up this salvage and then I encounter that salvage. Then I encounter some fuel. Then I encounter this fuel and I have no place to put it.
  • So, I will in true chaotic spirit jettison my pre-existing fuel to add this fuel.
  • Mhm.
  • That is a crazy little drop you just did that landed right next to your ship.
  • Somebody up there loves you in your dropping skills and somebody up there doesn't love me in my dropping skills. That's all.
  • Oh my goodness. Are you done with your turn?
  • Yeah, I'm done with my turn.
  • I will relaunch my pirate.
  • All right. And I think they will go after this uh pink asteroid. I believe that's the closest thing.
  • Put that in their hold on the pink planet. And then Okay, I've got things to do here. Yes. Yes. Going and picking up that green asteroid and then I will end up landing on this planet.
  • Now, even though I have extra movement here, as soon as you encounter the planet, you have to stop. So, I go boop. I pick this up. So, even though I have movement still left after going past this planet, once you have encountered or touched a planet in any way, you must stop and land on the planet.
  • I'm going to put this green asteroid in my cargo hold and I will encounter Omega Primal's Edgeworld.
  • So, first I will deliver my passenger. My passenger Liz Fantasmal wants to go to either a blue or yellow planet. This is the yellow one. So, I can drop them off and I'm going to get five credits for doing that. Boop.
  • Then I identify salvage. I have no salvage in my hold. So, we will not be jettisoning any to get any cards. But now I can turn in asteroids. So I have two green asteroids which I will turn in here.
  • I'm going to place one of our eight um market tokens on this. When we run out of market tokens, it ends the game.
  • So, I'm going to get four for each one of these. So I get eight credits for those two. And then I also have one blue asteroid.
  • Uh, and that can come here as well for four. Now this is just one. I'll only get four credits for it. I'm going to place another market token. So you can see the next person who delivers here, their asteroids are going to be worth fewer credits, but then at the end they're worth more, which is kind of neat. And but that's not everything you do on the planet, is it? There's actually more.
  • That's correct. First, I'm going to jettison these asteroids I've just sold.
  • They get back into the world. And now, because this is an edge world, oh, cool. This has a flux core, so I can move this planet up to three nav links in any direction. Where do I want it to go?
  • Maybe closer to these green asteroids. Why not?
  • I don't know. Let's just move it here. Why not? I don't know. I don't have a plan. I just think that's cool.
  • Now I can either explore the surface or repair my ship. I have nothing to repair, so I'm going to explore the surface. The explore rating on my ship is one, which means I take one card, and that's the one I keep. So, I'm taking one explore card. I have an upgrade, a gas extractor, plus one credit for each gas, which is white asteroids, I sell. So, that goes make some room for it here. So, I'm now the fathomless inflatable queen. I don't know how I feel about that, but I like getting bonus credits. And that will end my turn.
  • H I will start my turn by continuing my quest of getting these mines away from me and over to you. Oh well, okay. That's great. That lines it up perfectly for where I am. So, happy happy day. So, now I need to make a decision. Do I try jumping or do I try to just make it to a planet? Even though Oh, boy. I think I need to try jump driving. So, I'm gonna jettison this fuel.
  • All right.
  • And put that back into outermost space. Then I gain two credits.
  • That's right. Because your captain ability because I'm about to use my drop drive ability. I'm going to drop about a inch away from this ship.
  • Wow, that's pretty good. You can pick up a lot of stuff right there.
  • Maybe I can because I need to embrace chaos first of all. So, negative -2 to my rocket drive.
  • I will first move, which I think gets me.
  • You're not trying to pick up any of that stuff around you.
  • No, I'm trying to make it to the white world. I don't quite make it to the white planet. Pick up that guy. I will grab that and I'll add it to my cockpit, but then I will embrace chaos.
  • All right, let's see if you can move anymore. Get on that planet.
  • Three more.
  • Three. You can definitely do it.
  • I make it to the planet. Yes. And on this planet, I will first cash in this green, which they don't take. I will keep this green in my cargo hold.
  • Yeti's Edgeworld only wants pink and yellow asteroids, which they're missing out if you ask me. First, I need to deliver any passengers I have, which I have zero. Makes that easy enough. But now I can identify salvage, which was my whole goal. Yes. So, I got one, two salvage. You get one card for each one and you get to keep them both.
  • So, first up, we got flick drive. When activating your drop drive, you may flick your ship rather than dropping it. Oo, that you do have a very chaotic ship situation happening. I think I do. I think I need to embrace that. And the other card is a passenger Soul, who is an asteroid dealer. I can gain two credits for each asteroid in my hold that this planet purchases. Ooh.
  • So, the passenger will just kind of come over here and sit tight for a moment. And this guy is going to be smooshed into my ship, which I will need.
  • Let me help you.
  • Thank you. And so, my ship is now the lone chaotic wayward jumpy prism, my nickname in high school.
  • How about that? Now, you would sell your asteroids. As we already established, they don't want what you got. But this is a fuel depot, so you get to collect the nearest fuel. Oh, hi. Thank you very much. You're welcome. That and I will add that to one of my very few card holds.
  • Now, you may explore the surface. This I will do. So, please give me one card, two cards, three cards, which I will examine and decide what to keep. You get to keep one.
  • Oh, I got a nav module. Using your drop drive, we may drop from a height of one link.
  • Cool.
  • Okay. Uh, oh, I got a parasitic cargo or an extreapile cargo that I specimens that I can take. So, this one will give me points based on things how much they weigh. And this one will give me points if I get more red ones. H I think I will take I'll take this one simply because it's more credits, more points. So, these go to our discard pile over there.
  • Yes. And this gets locked into my cargo this gets locked into my cargo hold hold right there. right there.
  • Okay. So, what I think I'm going to do is flick a space mine, but not at you. I kind of want to get it out of the way of where I'm headed. So, I'm going to take this one and just try and get it like out of here.
  • It didn't work. It really got just closer to where I was going. And then my pirate that I control. Oh, is that within one link of the pirate ship?
  • Oh, that pirate ship takes uh proximity damage and will be destroyed.
  • So, I believe it jettison this cargo is gone.
  • Well, and now it's pirate time. So, it will launch.
  • Wait a minute. Oh, it's way over there. Oh, we got dueling pirates.
  • Oh, yeah. I think it's closest here. So, it's going to go here and then like get you. I mean the pirate ship you control that you are otherwise in no way affiliated with in it sighted. That's right.
  • And then I will leave the planet I am on as is the rule. And I'm just going to try and fly and pick some stuff up as I go. I'm going to hold off on using jump drive at the moment. So I want to do like this. Can I get Oh yeah. We're gonna fly to here and I get these asteroids along my path. I didn't go quite the direction I was planning, but I picked up some cool stuff, so it's gonna be fine. Okay, my cargo hold is full.
  • Okay, and I'm done with my turn.
  • I wonder if I can get this over to you. Let's try Chaz. I over y'all, I need you to know what just happened.
  • I overflow. I'm pretty sure that's how Voyager got in the Delta Quadrant.
  • We won't see that thing for 75 years.
  • Next, the pirate activates. And I've never seen this situation before. Will a pirate attack another pirate?
  • So, they both come in arms armed weapons.
  • Aha.
  • So, they battle. They battle. So, so it's just a roll v roll.
  • So, we got Oh my. Pink decimates the blue pirates. Oh boy.
  • So, blue pirate gets blowed up and pink will steal, I think. So, that will come over to there.
  • Yeah. Yeah. Let's Yeah. Boom. Boom. Steal on the pink planet. Pink just cashed in.
  • And uh there we go. So much chaos in the cosmos. Speaking of which, now it's time for a little more ship to ship action cuz I'm leaving this planet and I'm making a beline directly. Come attack me.
  • Okay, so this says after moving, roll a dieice. I haven't moved yet. That's just one thing I'm going to encounter. And I'm gonna add to that three more links.
  • You keep rolling three after three after three. I think every time you roll three.
  • Okay. And that definitely gets me to you. So, first we encounter the anomaly and then I encounter you.
  • What is it?
  • It's a Dyson sphere.
  • Place the Dyson sphere around the sun. Then collect one supercharged fuel cell, which are these guys over here. We have the Dyson sphere around the sun. And the Dyson sphere creates supercharged fuel.
  • I like how that sounds.
  • Me, too. Because as a result of discovering the Dyson sphere, I receive one of these supercharged fuel tokens here on the front of my ship. Says it doesn't go on a cargo hold. It goes on my ship.
  • Oh, there's more. So, press changed fuel token. If anyone docks with the Dyson sphere by touching one of its little pylons, they can dock with the Dyson sphere and they get one of these as well. This is a permanent little upgrade it added to the front of your ship. You can deplete this by flipping it over instead of jettisoning a fuel canister. And then if you go to a planet or dock with the Dyson sphere, you can fuel that puppy right back up.
  • Is there anything else you get to do when you dock at the pylon? Also, when you dock in the Dyson sphere, you may drop any number of fuel and or salvage, not asteroids.
  • Oh, good to know.
  • Yep. And you get three credits for each.
  • That's pretty sweet indeed. And now with the Dyson sphere construction completed, it brings us to our main event.
  • Now, you have to decide how you are approaching me for this encounter. Would you like to have uh hailing frequencies or armed weapons? And then I will choose how I respond. Oo.
  • Now remember, if you come at me with AR uh hailing frequencies, then we both get to just take one of two nearest cargo items.
  • Oh, that's nice. So, we just kind of grab something that's close to work together to superpower our tractor beams to each grab one thing.
  • Well, that sounds nice.
  • Now, we could have a battle if you would like that, but I'm going to implore you. I'm going to challenge you to choose peace.
  • Challenge me to choose peace. What happens if we tussle? We roll a battle or I could choose to surrender and just give you an item from my cargo which you would choose which thing you wanted.
  • Well, I'm coming at you guns ablazing and I
  • Why would you not have your hailing frequencies? I don't understand the choice.
  • So, I get plus four to my battle roll right here. So, I will roll my dice, add four to it, and that will be my attack damage.
  • I guess I surrender because I can't beat you. I have nothing. I have a plus zero. So, would you like a gold, a fuel, or a white asteroid? You will steal one cargo from me, and we will not roll any battle dice cuz I can't beat you. Even if I rolled a six, you'd have to have rolled a one.
  • You're going to surrender.
  • Yeah, sorry. I would like to keep more of my stuff. And I think I'm going to lose. This is called a strategy. What item would you like?
  • How's about the fuel cell? All right.
  • Well, that's a bummer.
  • Bummer indeed. I wanted to see some blowed upness.
  • Nope. Ends my turn.
  • Alrighty. I'm going to choose to not interact with a mine this turn cuz we are right near each other. So, I'm just going to leave them be for the moment. And then pirate will go. And I believe the pirate is closest to this pink asteroid. Just going to go and grab that.
  • So, I don't have any fuel to do my drop drive, but I have a plan. And that plan is to interact with our Dyson sphere here. So, I'm going to fly over to the Dyson sphere and land on it. So, I fly I'm going to land right here. I don't pick anything up along the way. But when I get there, I get to get one of these fuel cells supercharged.
  • And I have nothing to drop for credits because you stole my fuel from me in our battle. So, uh, but that's it. I have the supercharge now, which I have plans for everyone. I got plans because I'm prepping. I'm prepping for a big turn, I hope, next turn.
  • Well, I'm gonna go back to my original plan of trying to make my ship as magnanimously glorious as I possibly can. So, I'm going to use my super fuel to drop and gain two credits because of it.
  • And I will drop next to this guy right here. Boop. Oh, that's exactly where I wanted to be. So, I got four of these. And I'm going to start here, come around, here, which puts me here, and then I get my chaos dice.
  • Oh, see how far you go.
  • I get four more. Wow, you can go really far. which allows me to I Oh, yes. You just bypass the anomaly. You pick up some salvage and fuel. That's pretty sweet.
  • But before my amazing turn happens, there's a pirate. We've got to do the pirate, of course. There we go.
  • All right. And what do you think? Pink or green? I think maybe slightly closer to the green one. Scoop up the green. Yep.
  • Boop.
  • Okay. And then I make my way to salvage that. salvage that and this.
  • That's pretty good. And can you hold any of it?
  • It would be even better if I had the space to hold it. So, I will jettison that.
  • Uh, and I will, you know what? I don't need the fuel anymore cuz I got so many other things that What you need is a chaos drive.
  • All I need is a chaos drive. But first, oh, look. Oh my goodness. You know what's closest to the pirate ship is you.
  • What?
  • Yep. Armed weapons. Just how you like it. How do you respond? That's what the pirates will automatically do. By the way, they always come in with weapons armed.
  • That's tussle.
  • All right. So, you get to roll a lot in this pirate ship adds nothing to their roll.
  • I add plus four.
  • They've only rolled a two.
  • Oops. And I roll four plus four.
  • You win. Oo, you're going to get so much stuff that you can't keep.
  • That's not what's important. That's a difference of six, which means you get all of their stuff.
  • I will take the salvage and jettison this fuel and I will replenish the universe with it.
  • Nice. And now it is my turn. Okay. So, I thought I was going to need my supercharged fuel to drop over to get to the pink planet, but I actually think I'm within range to just be able to fly there.
  • Oh, so you give it to me. And I'm gonna be able to pick up this salvage along the way. I just kind of miss everything else. So, I have a salvage. Oh boy. This is going to be cool, I think. So, I am encountering my home planet. It's just a coincidence really. I have no passengers to deliver, but I will identify salvage.
  • So, I drop that and I get to take one of these explore cards, and it is a specimen. All right. So this is pretty cool. So this is a blue planet type of specimen and it will score for each one will give three credits. Well, I have this really cool prismatic specimen I started the game with and it counts as any kind of colored specimen. So this counts as a blue. So both of these will score for that. So that's pretty cool. That's going to be worth six credits plus two for this card. So I'm pretty excited to have grabbed that. That's pretty good. I'm not even done. So, now I can sell off some asteroids. I have one I have one gas or white asteroid. Uh, I get an extra credit because of my gas extractor upgrade because I'm inflatable.
  • So, this will be worth 1 + 4, five credits for that.
  • And then this planet also likes this gold. I think it might be ore. These asteroids, I have three of them. And that's four each. So that's 12 credits for turning those on. I'm in the money, the space money. I'm selling asteroids and I'm making all that bank. Okay, then I'm going to explore the surface. I have the explore rating of one. So I'll just see what I get here. A passenger who'd like to go to the gold or green planet. All right, come along cosmic Oz. I will see if I can get you there. That would be the end of my turn. And we have four of our eight market tokens placed, which means we're halfway to our ending condition. What you going to do about it? How you going to catch up to me?
  • Yeah, that that was one good turn that just
  • And every good turn deserves another, which Chaz is going to try to do himself right now as we keep playing the game. But we're going to say goodbye to you while we do that. We hope that this showed you a little bit of how this game works. We hope you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for watching. Give the video a like, subscribe to this channel, and we'll see you in the next one as we continue to take as many good turns as we possibly can.
  • What you going to do, Jess?
  • I'm going to try and figure out how to blow up your ship again.
  • Well, first your pirate needs to go. So, they're right there. Yes.

  • Couldn't be a better packaging system with a 52 card deck that essentially just generates all of your actions for the game.
  • So, that is an interesting feature that I really, really like cuz you're pingponging from board to board.
  • This is the kind of uh perfect solo game, solo experience of you just sitting around puzzling it out, trying to maximize your turn, get the most bang for your buck.
  • And a lot of great additional things with New Frontier, the expansion to Flip Town.
  • Flip Voyage really surprised me and is a nice different game with the core system that you get here in Flip Town

Pros
  • It's a game worth learning.
  • It's got that gut-churning twist where your cards are also your money, and so your strategy is constantly changing depending on which new cards come into your hand throughout the game.
  • Great for players who like to build their own little house and don't want other players to interfere.
  • It's all about figuring out which phase the other players are going to choose so that you can make the most out of every round.
  • One of the greats.
Cons
  • Notoriously difficult to learn.
  • Confusing symbols on cards.
  • Instruction booklet is poorly written.
Thematic elements

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area Control — Some worlds have a red outline around them. You can't settle these worlds by paying cards - you have to conquer them with your military strength.
  • Card Drafting — In later expansions, the manual even suggests some drafting rules for the start worlds and starting hands, so if you're picky about luck, you may want to adapt those drafting rules into the base game.
  • End game trigger — When a player builds a 12th card, or takes the last Victory point chip, that triggers the end of the game and you count up all the points and see who's won.
  • Hand Management — You have a hand full of cards, and you pay to build these cards out in front of you, in a tableau. The cards in the game stand in for so many things: they are worlds you settle, and developments you build, they're money you spend, AND they stand in for the gross domestic product of your planets!
  • Resource Management — You can consume these goods later in the game. Consuming goods can net you victory points, and/or more cards - cards which you can either try to build, or use as money.
  • Role selection — There are five phases in the game, each one marked by a Roman Numeral. At the beginning of a round, everybody secretly chooses one of these five phases, and when you're all ready, everyone slaps their chosen phase down at the same time. The players who CHOSE the [phase] get a bonus perk for picking it.
  • Set Collection — Many of the cards you build are worth victory points. Some cards produce resources for you, which you can sell for more cards, or for victory points. A few cards are meta-cards, that earn you points for having certain cards in your tableau.
  • Tableau Building — You have a hand full of cards, and you pay to build these cards out in front of you, in a tableau.
  • Variable Phase Order — The phases are called in order, but not all phases may happen in a single round. You could have a phase where every player chooses Phase I:Explore, and no other phase happens.

  • The Big Box will include all the components that are found in the base game plus 50 additional wooden versions of the coins instead of the metal ones which is a bummer to some who would have liked that but it is what it is.
  • These guest tokens are virtually wild cards or wild tokens and you acquire them through building certain building cards in this expansion deck and when you acquire them you place them into your personal Supply and can use them in one of three major ways you can discard them and put them back in the General Supply to decrease the cost of future building cards you can count them as one plate when you serve fish to the elders so if you're missing fish you can use them to supplant that but you can also use them and permanently put them onto your boats that you include in your fishing row to increase the amount of fish that you gain in the income phase.
  • Caverna: Cave vs. Cave is more of a mechanically similar game rather than thematically since you do pair out a lot of the mechanisms and abilities that you find in the original Caverna which allow you to farm and make it reminiscent of Agricola.
  • Cave vs. Cave is mostly a resource tracking resource conversion and Tableau building with tiles type of game that has the look and some of the feel of the original Caverna.
  • The way that you excavate especially if you play randomly with the random seating of these buildings the way that these buildings come out after you excavate the order in which they come out can I feel drastically alter the way that you approach the game.
  • In complete transparency I have personally not played through era 2 yet.
  • The wall mechanism of cave versus cave is reutilized in games like orani and burger canal with the different types of routes being placed on and around your building tiles allows them to activate in certain ways but in cave versus cave they're building requirements and so or at labora kind of has that similar Vibe going as well where it's more of a fact of the way that you place your buildings in relation to each other on your Tableau results in points scored during the game and at the end of the game and so I like that fact as well that is that is represented in cave versus cave and happy to see that type of spatial puzzle reutilized in a two-player version of the game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Many consumers will seek out games by their favorite designers or publishers because they know they won't be disappointed but when it comes to spending money to buy the game they only want to pay for the components themselves
  • The industry has such small margins that Publishers can't afford to pay designers any more than their small royalty raising prices won't fly with consumer
  • it's easier to Value things that we can see like the artwork you can look at it and go oh I imagine that artist must be very talented and the time it would have taken to draw all the art for these cards but we have a harder time with those elements we can't see
  • what you're paying for here is not really the time it took me to fix this but the expertise the talent the skills I have that allowed me to identify the problem see how to fix it quickly and have the skill set to do it properly
  • it's harder to see the hours and hours that went into creating the game and play testing it and making sure that there was actually a good game inside of that box
  • Discerning Gamers will start to look more and more for the designer's name that's on the box of the game that they're looking to pick up
  • Publishers are going to recognize there's a certain amount of star power by having a you know established designer on the game and that again Discerning Gamers will value that and perhaps be willing to pay a little more for a game a designer that they trust
  • I want to see designers compensated for the work that makes these games so good that makes them popular and then makes money for those Publishers
