Description

Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features 180 birds illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

—description from the publisher

From the 7th printing on, the base game box includes Wingspan: Swift-Start Promo Pack.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Board Game Geek it is the ultimate Treasure Trove of all modern board game titles it's like the Wikipedia page of board gaming
  • the weight is kind of like the complete lexity in terms of learning the game but also playing the game
  • the rank is kind of um generated based on the number of people that rate that game
  • a good rating for me is about a 7 out of 10 and anything that's kind of like an eight is considered very very good
  • Fans also like and basically if you click on it it reveals to you other games that people have also enjoyed who've enjoyed wingspace fan too
  • Gateway games which I like to call inro Level games which kind of introduces the mechanics of these larger games at a much more simpler level and see if it's to your taste
  • Playing Gateway Games might essentially save you a lot of money
  • Sometimes the selection of games to choose from is incredibly overwhelming
  • I like to take my time I like to look at everything look at the theme and see if the mechanics and the theme of the game is something that appeals to you
  • if it doesn't turn out to be the game that I thought it was going to be and that's okay because I can always trade it or gift it to a friend later
  • Someone would say a manala mechanism i' be like what on Earth is it is it like some sort of alien creature that I need to know before I can play this game
  • initially I thought a Euro game was just game setting Europe
  • the idea that you could team up and then play against the game system itself just really opened my mind to different approaches to playing games
  • if you're so deeply into a hobby that you might be the only one so far down the rabbit hole that you're not going to turn back and one thing I discovered about modern board games is that a lot of games have a solo mode
  • sometimes it's actually very therapeutic to do that
  • that game only has to be good for you and if you enjoy it then tick all the boxes

  • if you are a brand new person to the board gaming Hobby and you've just discovered these games for the first time then you have come to the Right video My friends
  • you're not purely just getting it because everyone else said it's popular you're getting big you're getting it because there's something in the game that really reaches into your soul and says you know what this is a puzzle worth uh solving
  • the idea of a euro is that it's more centered around the mechanics of how the game works rather than the theme itself
  • basically it just means games that are full of combat uh story driven rise heavily on the dice roll so there's a huge luck factor into the game but it's the thrill of the dice roll and leveling up your characters and pursuing a cool character story arc that makes those games really shine and enjoyable
  • Cooperative games really reshaped how I thought board games should be played
  • Legacy games feel like you've read a Trilogy of books where once you get to the end you've you've explored every facet of that story
  • these games definitely make me feel uncomfortable but they definitely serve a purpose and plays in social Gatherings and party settings which can often be used to break the eye
  • basically deduction games are great because I just love the post game discussions that you can have
  • worker placement games really is about taking what you want now being opportunistic about it but then denying other plays the ability to use that space or action or benefit for a short period of time

Quotes (from this video)
  • The way a game felt was very different to the way a game the game looked and that often confused me
  • One of the biggest hurdles I found in modern board gaming is the terminology the language used to describe games
  • When in doubt, err toward omission. A null field is always better than a wrong field.
  • You might think isn't that an incredible juxtaposition of Concepts and ideas where they don't really ever get Associated together unless you're talking maybe about like metal birds that fly in there like planes but in this game the engine building really works superbly well
  • If you're building an engine in real life you need to know all of the components that go into it and each component in your engine is going to have a particular function and a particular purpose
  • The competition comes down to who can be the most efficient at putting the pieces of the engine together who can churn out the most resources and then reinvest those resources to create the most victory points ever
  • When one thinks of the term engine building it's usually associated with something mechanical but in a modern board gaming context engine building could mean anything it could mean nature flourishing growth thriving in a functioning ecosystem
  • The positive positive interaction of Earth means that this game has a very satisfying feeling to it no one is Left Behind and no one is left feeling like oh I can't really do anything because there's always something that you're going to be able to do
  • The game invites ways for players to break mend scoot around maneuver and meld the game rules in their favor
  • The success of a player comes down to the type of tinkering and engine building that they engage in
  • I really like to do when I play engine building games is simply step back and appreciate my opponent's engine

Quotes (from this video)
  • there's so many different versions of our favorite games that it's almost impossible to own them all
  • we're kind of being onslaught with these two-player games because people have often thought well I've only got my significant other to play with I guess I will buy a two-player only game
  • do we need both when the multiplayer version still allows you to play at two players do I need the two player only Duo version of the game
  • Duo versions of popular games sell relatively better and are far more appealing to the general public than expansions to a game
  • the selling value or the marketable value of a Duo game is going to be far more potent than any other version of the game
  • a two-player version does funnel that feeling and the moments of tension far better than say something that's designed for a multiplayer game
  • what was old is new becomes this momentum of bringing classic games again to the Forefront of everyone's Minds
  • it inserts into your mind this need to own everything
  • these versions or offshoots of these popular games are really really taking over and almost confusing and clouding the consumer
  • just cuz it says you know two players doesn't mean that's better than the original you might buy and go o actually it's not better than the original or I'd rather just play the original
  • it does feel like lazy game design it does feel like a cash grab
  • it really has to set itself apart if I really want to own that two-player version
  • this is shelf space this is our valuable time this is our valuable money that we've spent or earned

  • Card Drafting — Some bird cards come with points, which may counterbalance power or reward specific conditions and resource costs.
Video topics + discussion points

Quotes (from this video)
  • What is the point of points and is it pointless?
  • It's like having like 10 tabs open in your mind as you're trying to work out, well, I could get three points from here, 10 points from here, five points from there.
  • In in a mechanical sense and a mathematical sense, it all makes sense and it all keeps everything balanced. But from a thematic point of view, it's like, oh, okay, I got four feather points for playing this bird. Okay, what does that mean?
  • And I feel like that feels more rewarding points-wise cuz you're like, "Ah, I see the points here are acting more like a resource and you're getting those points back because of it."
  • do those the meaning of the points actually become meaningless at that point?
  • And I like Glass Road because it's so tense and cuz every single point counts and it matters.
  • I think I prefer games that really have low point scores overall. I think I really get a true sense of like I am working really tough for these points and I'm really thinking that I need to do these things in order to get the points that I need to fulfill these conditions in the game.
  • There's a little bit of psychology that is infused with victory point systems.
  • And when a game really strikes the right balance between actions, effort, and point scores, that's when it really hits the sweet spot.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, I feel like when a game is labeled broken, it does taint that game a lot. and other people who hear the term broken think, well, I'm probably not going to give that game a try.
  • There's not too many games that are considered to be broken. So you don't need to sell off half of your board game collection on your shelf.
  • Now, this game is all about uh drafting trees, drafting insects, and different multi-use cards.
  • And so when I got Glass Road, I really loved it solo mode. I love the card play where you kind of try and pick an a worker action but not match with other players. Brilliant. Brilliant.
  • Games that come with hundreds of different cards with different abilities are going to always encounter uh card balance issues, ones where some cards feel like they are underpowered, and some cards that feel like they're overpowered.
  • It's almost humanly impossible to test for those different situations.
  • This is probably one of the first worker placement Euro games I was ever introduced to.
  • So what did you think of some of those overpowered strategies? Do you think they're warranted? Do you think there's ways to counter those strategies? Are there any other board games that you've played where you might feel like that game is slightly broken?
  • Please let me know in the comment section below. I'd love to start a conversation with you.

  • It's a simplistic game, but it can also get insanely complicate like the strategy I love Dominion.
  • It is one of my favorite games ever made, deck building or not.
  • Does a whole unique thing where you never shuffle your deck. Every time you have to draw from your deck and you can't, you take your discard pile and flip it.
  • So, this is also a massive campaign uh boss battler game.
  • But it is some of the best writing in board games in my opinion.

  • So, one of the things I do during the day is kind of just follow around to all of the different stations and get as many more of these onto the stacks as we can.
  • Stonemire is pretty crucial to my identity as a gamer. It's the reason I'm even here because of Euphoria. I run a podcast because of all my experiences here.
  • At no point is a Stonemire game going to sit there and say like, 'Cool. Here's a bunch of negative interaction. Get out of here. There's no player elimination, anything like that.'

  • And I love that we talk about everything but games when we start the show that makes me so happy not talking about games just talking about everything else
  • And then when we finished we felt that great shame and the pain in the belly and it was wonderful.
  • Overall topic that I was thinking about today. So, I had game night this past Wednesday.
  • And I realized as I was teaching Orton's story that I I really appreciate and I really love expansions that seamlessly integrate with the core game so that you can teach it to anyone
  • Should we call those plug-and-play expansions? They seem like they're plug and play.
  • On the surface, you think you're bringing in just a new character, same rule set. Uh, you play the game the same. the the turn order is exact exactly the same, but it gets a little complicated when you're bringing in new characters to Dice Throne
  • But it is it is nice when a game already works pretty darn well and you're just adding more cards in there and more tiles.
  • And I think it's worth if you're if you're a designer or a publisher uh listening, I think there's there's value in that.
  • So, the board game designer you'd most like to collaborate with and haven't had a chance to collaborate with.
  • Um, but I think I have to go with Vantage because Vantage is kind of the culmination of some of the things that I've talked about here. It was it's the most passion project of all of my passion projects.

  • Uh, that's something that we always face in play testing where uh, you know, if you refresh that pool too often, then by the time it gets around to my turn, I can't really plan ahead at all for the type of card that I want.
  • I wanted to dig into the different ways that games do this, that they keep this central pool fresh while not refreshing it so often that players can't plan around the cards or hope to get a certain card or component from that pool.
  • These are all games that I enjoyed something about the game and largely a lot of things about these games. um rather than a ranking of these card pool refreshing mechanisms because the different versions of these mechanisms work in different games.

  • Basically, I think this is the third maybe fourth. I think it's the fourth time I've done a top 10 overrated games list, hence more. And I called it you have been warned.
  • But actually, surprisingly, despite somebody sharing it on Facebook, which I was not happy about really, cuz I mean I I don't know. I I like my content being shared on Facebook and I do say do it, but that list is a dangerous one to put on Facebook because, you know, we do have this problem in the hobby of toxic positivity.
  • No, shut off. It is really is not. I'm doing it because I enjoy it.
  • There's certainly examples of this you see in real life and it's just gez, how closed is your bubble that you have to think that that argument still works?
  • Do not be misled thinking that you look at this game and it's going to be a charming little farming game. It is everything but.
  • This game isn't really a game about cultivating roses. This is a game about debt management.
  • This game is multiplayer solitaire through and through.
  • This is a solo puzzle.
  • Hated this.
  • The hobby has become very elitist and very clicky.
  • Shame on you if you do it.
  • If you are done with the table and you're not playing something next, then get off the freaking table and let someone else use it. Honestly, it is selfish and irresponsible.
  • If you are the sort of people who leave your games on a table for hours on end just to hog the table and stop anybody else playing on it. And you essentially don't return to the table for hours on end. [...] If you're doing that to gaming tables, then shame on you.
  • For a hobby that is meant to be about, oh, let's be inclusive and let's uh get new people in and stuff like that, it doesn't half do a pretty damn good job of excluding a lot and, you know, being very elitist.
  • It's not a good feeling and it is something that is hurting, you know, conventions in general and I think that's the biggest reason that conventions sometimes don't work.

  • The god cards are really cool because there's uh randomized right you only get a certain number of gods per game which adds uh unique abilities that you do over course of the game right I think there's 20 in the game or something like that I don't remember but yeah you're you're you're stilling their favor to activate them but if if you're not careful the priority of when those certain God powers activate if I steal enough favor then you said I'm going to use this God favor at this value it won't activate.
  • The simplest thing you do can change strategy and can have ramifications.
  • The resolution of how those actions resolve that's really really good.
  • The ink was little very small pieces of cardboard and y'all I can't count the number of times Tony dropped ink on the floor that night it was so funny my big old sausage fingers trying to get in that stupid bag pulling out ink oh it was oh it was sad it was so sad I wish those had been wooden tokens or acrylic or thicker cardboard cuz they were kind of hard uh to pick up that is a nitpick.
  • The goal of the game is to knock out two of your opponent's camps and then they win the game.
  • The only issue I had when we were playing this was I was getting frustrated with some of the verbiage because I I couldn't get out of my head Marty that you I always felt like you had to go through those forces that you couldn't bypass them.
  • The Art's amazing I I love the anime style art I love being able to create my own combo decks the limited resources the closed resources basically of the secure leaves and how they shift around and use for Shields or distance or life or activating cards I like that and the very small deck that creates the built-in timer that deals you damage over time.
  • The game is built on a timer every time you have to reshuffle your deck you will take a damage which I also like that internal clock too which is going to take us back to where I talked about Hitler's right game reshuffling is the timer.

Pros
  • easy to run automa
  • fair but sometimes challenging
  • great alternative for solo play
  • feels like competing against another player
Cons
  • card draws can affect outcomes and require mitigation
  • some complexity with automa powers and pink powers
Thematic elements
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Automa action cubes — Automa uses eight action cubes; the host always goes first, and the automa acts on its own turn.
  • Automa card deck and bonuses — Automa has a deck of cards including bonus cards and end-of-round goals; some cards have remove-after-round effects.
  • Bonus card influence — At setup, a bonus card is drawn for the automa; cards like Visionary Leader affect future card draws and scoring.
  • Difficulty levels and endgame card values — Endgame scoring for automa face-down cards depends on difficulty: eaglet, eagle, or eagle-eyed Eagle change the point values (3, 4, or 5 respectively).
  • End-of-round scoring and round goals — End-of-round goals and scoring tokens determine scoring; there are end-of-round goals such as Eggs in a Nest and other bonuses; a round tracker helps manage rounds.
  • Face-up card selection with Platform Nest — During its turn, the automa looks at three face-up cards and selects those with a Platform Nest, choosing the highest-scoring one to play.
  • No player mat / resources for automa — Automa does not get a player mat, does not collect food tokens, does not pay for anything, and does not benefit from bird powers; it still gathers birds and eggs for endgame scoring.
  • Pink powers activation — There is a mechanism to activate pink powers; when activated, powers on pink cards on the automa board are triggered.
  • Round 2 workflow and food management — In round 2, automa actions may involve discarding foods and handling pink powers as per the selected row.
  • Round tracker and setup options — A current round tracker card is used (not mandatory) to help track rounds.

Quotes (from this video)
