Description

Dune: Imperium is a game that finds inspiration in elements and characters from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson. As a leader of one of the Great Houses of the Landsraad, raise your banner and marshal your forces and spies. War is coming, and at the center of the conflict is Arrakis – Dune, the desert planet. Dune: Imperium uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement. You start with a unique leader card, as well as deck identical to those of your opponents. As you acquire cards and build your deck, your choices will define your strengths and weaknesses. Cards allow you to send your Agents to certain spaces on the game board, so how your deck evolves affects your strategy. You might become more powerful militarily, able to deploy more troops than your opponents. Or you might acquire cards that give you an edge with the four political factions represented in the game: the Emperor, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the Fremen. Unlike many deck-building games, you don’t play your entire hand in one turn. Instead, you draw a hand of cards at the start of every round and alternate with other players, taking one Agent turn at a time (playing one card to send one of your Agents to the game board). When it’s your turn and you have no more Agents to place, you’ll take a Reveal turn, revealing the rest of your cards, which will provide Persuasion and Swords. Persuasion is used to acquire more cards, and Swords help your troops fight for the current round’s rewards as shown on the revealed Conflict card. Defeat your rivals in combat, shrewdly navigate the political factions, and acquire precious The Spice Must Flow cards to lead your House to victory!

  • Class Abilities — Different classes have unique abilities, such as 'Shadow Knights' benefiting from darkness, or 'Defenders' having better 'prevents'.

  • focus abilities — Abilities that can be used when in trouble, potentially requiring action cubes and offering strategic advantages.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is episode two. Episode one already happened. Surprise.
  • It's down below in the video description. There is a playlist and you can find past and future episodes there.
  • I did it a long time ago and now I see people do it.
  • This game, however, since it came out in 2021, I think it's considered a old, busted, dead game.
  • This is the best dungeon crawler ever made.
  • It's like I feel like it feels like a band-aid solution made to like they were like play testing without it and then like they were like oh in dungeon crawlers people always like start getting really good
  • It's like I mean, it's succeeding at that, but yeah, it's just it's a frustrating mechanic.
  • For me, it's not such a big deal to replay a game if I wasn't streaming it and if it's just you and I playing in our home. But I always just think of that worst case scenario of like you have four buddies that that take the time away from their family, their life, their school, their kids or whatever they're doing to come over for game time or meet at a game store or go over to their house.
  • I don't know if that's like good game design. I think that's like it's very the opposite of respecting the players time, right?

  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.

  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.

  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is the expansion that solves the biggest pacing problem I've ever encountered in a board game.
  • Prelude eliminates Terraforming Mars' sluggish opening.
  • Valhalla transforms warrior death from punishing setback to strategic opportunity.
  • There’s no single dominant path. Invest heavily in dreadnots purchased with Solari, IXIN tech purchased with Spice, or traditional influence track pursuit.
  • The Globe Trotters bonus card awards 15 points to whoever completes the most destination tickets, incentivizing midgame risks rather than playing it safe.
  • Intrigue is pure deck building. It adds 26 kingdom cards.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I get kind of a hairbrained idea, and then I just kind of lean in without really thinking about the consequences, the amount of work involved, and the bystanders who are impacted by that.
  • The designer of a million expansions known as Dominion
  • You know, like this is an expansion where we know that there's going to be some of you SOBs out there who are going to buy it whether or not it's good because if it exists, you need to have it in that box.
  • It might make the game actually worse, but I kind of need to check it out. I need to know.
  • I know that they can undermine the aspect of actually playing them.
  • Sometimes hit great. But then also occasionally it is it is just, oh, this is more rules for as much if not less fun.
  • there there are some stinkers as part of expansion month that we're covering too.
  • Was that a mistake? You know, like and kind of reflecting on the past.
  • Expansions take up a lot of space in this hobby, but especially in the review space, I feel like they are much under appreciated and under represented.
  • Lords of Waterdeep when Skullport was added was this like oh, you took a base favorite game of mine and added this competitive piece that I simultaneously want to engage with and also very much do not want to end up the most corrupted player.
  • I loved Spirit Island so much and then to be introduced to like oh, there I already thought this game was like as good as it can be and then getting Jagged Earth and it's like oh, the challenges like getting it better.

  • Deck Building — The combat everything else that happened in that round and in previous rounds and what might happen in the next round informs that moment of fight, that moment of conflict.

Quotes (from this video)
  • it is a crime against somebody that this game has not been just been picked up because people that have played this game, I still have the game and and you know, they love it.
  • overrated, I'm going to probably get hated for this is I'm just going to say Magic the Gathering.
  • it really elicits a lot of the interesting feelings of the movie.
  • Now Urban Sprawl is like a city building game. Like think of SimCity or something like that. But, it's a little bit more I would say mean, but the players aren't really mean to each other.
  • But, the combat everything else that happened in that round and in previous rounds and what might happen in the next round informs that moment of fight, that moment of conflict.
  • it abstracts it in such a compact way that everything else in the in the system is is important and that's what actually where the combat is. So, the fight isn't where you think it is.
  • it really just got me into the hobby, like learning about mechanics, reading reviews and all of that and then like really sitting with the game strategically and thinking about stuff
  • his boards are seamless. Like it looks like an actual landscape and then the spaces are there as opposed to like, you know, drawing a border or a box.
  • but they're they're written the best I've ever seen a like piece of flavor text or a paragraph written in the board game space
  • Tales of the Arthurian Knights. It's beautiful game. The reason this is the top one for me is because the the level of care and craft that goes into the story entries
  • they're written the best I've ever seen a like piece of flavor text or a paragraph written in the board game space.
  • I will lose myself in the paragraph and feel like, oh this is like a good snippet from some ancient tale or something written in the 50s or whatever, you know, and or the 1800s.
  • Rangers of Shadow Deep, which has been like my number one game for the last couple of top 50s that I did.
  • it's a solo co-op miniature skirmish game that has a really vast expansive narrative campaign.
  • It gives me that D&D sort of taste cuz it's a D20 system and it's very like miniature scape world building type of thing.
  • it's just great. It's it gives you the chance to just play with all of your toys and play with all of your your terrain and your models and your your creative thinking, your world building cuz you can still kind of be a game master for yourself because the the game lays out like a narrative thing and then there's some like deck of card things that sort of change up the scenarios if you play them more than once. And so there is sort of a game master there, but the game master's kind of like left the table by the time you get there. They're gone. They gave you the outline and then you're there to kind of game master and play at the same time.

  • So cutthroat with twists and turns.

  • The worms doubling rewards can be fun.
Cons

  • Not great at two-player without AI.
  • The worms can cause big point swings (4-5 points) which can be anticlimactic.
  • Last conflict cards can be too powerful.
  • It can be too easy for the AI to get too many troops.
  • The worms doubling rewards from two to four points is a big swing.
  • It's more interesting when players move up one point at a time, not large swings.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The partial cutthroat special.
  • Root is the famous at this point cutesy but brutal asymmetrical war game where every player has a completely unique faction that plays in a different way and scores points in a different way but follows some kind of few simple core basic rules.
  • Ants, my arch nemesis game of 2026 for sure, if not beyond.
  • I may have said that I hate this game upwards of 10 times while we were playing it, at least.
  • It is very good. It's a bit chesslike, right?
  • One thing that I really don't like about it, and I'm sure you disagree because you kept winning. Uh, but it's the the game ends when someone reaches 40 points.
  • So, I just find there's really a lot of game state and people win in different ways from going after different strategies.
  • It has this great excitement at the end. Uh, it's kind of quick to go through as well.
  • A Feast for Odin is a kind of worker placement mixed with polyomno game where you're sending out workers essentially fill up these player boards with all different shapes of tiles to cover up negative points.
  • I find the occupation cards here. They're never interesting to me and they're so like they're so difficult.
  • Dune Uprising... It's just so cutthroat and there's so many twists and turns and it's exciting and frustrating.
  • I really hate about AI factions is when they get to do things that real players couldn't do.

  • A game can top every ranking, win every award, sell out every print run, and still sit on your table and leave you completely cold.
  • A game being widely loved does not mean it was built for you.
  • Your table is not our table.
  • If we are hard on a game you adore, that is a data point about us, not a verdict on you.
  • Race for the Galaxy instead.
  • It delivers the same engine-building tableau satisfaction, the same thematic richness of building a galactic civilization card by card in under 45 minutes.
  • Brass: Birmingham.
  • It is a game I admire far more than I enjoy.

  • I can't review a prototype. So, no, I don't have the time.

Quotes (from this video)
  • That's what we're covering today. And we've got a great spread, too. Some of these are tense strategy games, some are chaotic and cinematic, some are cooperative, some are mean, and one of them is basically four people daring each other to ruin their own potion.
  • It's a political economic simulation about social classes, public systems, labor, capital, and the state.
  • Which is exactly why four players is essential here. This is one of the clearest examples on the list of a design that is most itself at four.
  • At four, every policy has a face. Every economic shift has a stakeholder. Every argument at the table suddenly has substance because the people affected are literally sitting there saying, 'Well, this is great for you, but it wrecks my entire round.'
  • The Quacks of Quedlinburg, which is pure push-your-luck joy.
  • In our experience, it is one of the all-time best examples of simple tension done right, because the entire experience is built around a question everybody understands instantly. Do I stop now, or do I pull one more?
  • Four is perfect, because this kind of game thrives on shared reaction.
  • So, if your group wants something interactive, accessible, and wonderfully dramatic without a huge rules burden, we think Quacks at four is an easy recommendation. It's loud in the best possible way.

  • And considering it's one of my favorite genres of all time, and we just did a review of Kinfire, which caused me to noodle on this top 10 list again.
  • But nonetheless, no matter how you slice it, Dune Imperium does a really great job of mixing worker placement with some light elements of deck building, effortlessly weaving together this economic backbone that works so well for the world of Frank Herbert.
  • This is some of the most fun worker placement that I've done with my family, with my friends.
  • Viticulture Essential Edition which I think is just one of the best purest worker placement games that you can get.
  • It just feels refined and smart and elegant and propulsive and nuanced.
  • But I still think Viticulture Essential Edition as is, is just one of the tightest, most easily recommendable midweight Euro purchases you can give to anyone.
  • It's just man everything I love about board games.
  • But the lantern action when you draft one of the lower value dice, which yes, they are less powerful dice, but still functional.
  • it's just a beautifully presented, tight, small box Euro that gives you so much to do in such a really pleasing package that just makes you frustrated when you play that you can't get more out of any of your turns.

  • I really liked how uh bombastic the cards get in allowing you to do, you know, things on your own board and how to explore it.
  • Uh especially with the military aspect and, you know, creating or increasing the military might that you have to um impose on other opponents and when these battles really made our games uh come down to these in addition to uh the just straight-up deck building and um you know, playing cards from your hands and worker placement aspects that has a lot of good mechanisms that I enjoy.
  • This game I really enjoyed for the theme. I like the the thematic story and the arc of this game where the plague gets pretty bad uh during the game, uh but then slowly as you start to unders- or, you know, uh combat the disease, you start to uh rely less and less on taking out the plague and more and more coming back to repopulate Messina.
  • it's still a game that is is tough for me to play sometimes just because um you know, I if I think I know what is going on with the strategy of this game and and and you know, the the more that I have to learn from it and so it kind of deterred me from playing it more
  • But yeah, uh as as bland as it looks, it's actually really fun order fulfillment game.
  • Um it's not as deep or complex as Magic or Hearthstone or some of the other card games are, but it probably will get to that point at some at some point.
  • I wish that the meta game was more diverse. It hasn't been so since the start of the game.
  • And Wingspan for me, while it's a masterpiece of of a design um in my opinion, I really was really drawn to all of the birds and the individuality of these cards.
  • It does take a while to play, I think if you're playing with new people, which was kind of a deterrent for me for bringing this game out more often.
  • So, this is one of the latest Uwe Rosenberg games back in 2022, one of my favorite games. One for the solo version of this game. I think that is the peak way to play this game.
  • And so I I hold it in high esteem.

  • The combination of familiar mechanics works very well.
  • The overall rule set is liked and not overly complex.
  • Playing the game multiple times over a couple of weeks shows enjoyment.

Quotes (from this video)
  • i play with the rise of ix expansion and why is that it adds just enough to change things up
  • in this case i feel like the game really stands on its own
  • so with the rise of x again that adds in just enough where i had additional options and the solo opponents also change what they do a little bit and they are a lot more difficult so i started to lose which may sound odd but i was excited about it
  • it doesn't necessarily do anything innovative or you know amazingly different it didn't it doesn't change up the formula that you might find in a lot of other board games but this is important being able to find similarities and feel familiar with some of the mechanics and mixing those up is really awesome
