Quotes (from this video)
  • A game can top every ranking, win every award, sell out every print run, and still sit on your table and leave you completely cold.
  • A game being widely loved does not mean it was built for you.
  • Your table is not our table.
  • If we are hard on a game you adore, that is a data point about us, not a verdict on you.
  • Race for the Galaxy instead.
  • It delivers the same engine-building tableau satisfaction, the same thematic richness of building a galactic civilization card by card in under 45 minutes.
  • Brass: Birmingham.
  • It is a game I admire far more than I enjoy.
  • Dune Imperium again.
  • Two of our 11 alternatives are the same game. I think that tells you something honest about what our table actually wants out of an evening.

  • Players feel railroaded by game design.
  • The legacy implementation is considered poor.
  • There's a lack of player agency and meaningful decisions.
  • Production issues with stickers are significant.
  • Art design can be jarring.
  • Mechanics feel unbalanced.
  • The game is fiddly with constant shuffling.
  • The story and narrative are mediocre.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's the best example of how not to do a legacy game.
  • I don't like the writing. The writing is dumb.
  • The stickers are equally both, you know, too small and too big. Too small for the board and too big for the cards.
  • The more we've talked about it, the more I realized if someone asked me to play Clank, even though I'm going to play Clank Legacy 2, but if someone were to come up to me and ask me to play Clank or Clank Legacy, I would probably throw up.
  • It is awful.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is very like tribal like morbid.
  • It's um it's Dark Souls King Arthur, the Arthurian legend.
  • this one is kind of like it's very like tribal like morbid.
  • But if we're looking at themes of negative like negative games that I just did not care about the theme
  • I typically don't buy them if I if I don't like the theme.
  • the way that they did the theme was was so uninspired.
  • Odelin is again a good one just because it's it's Diablo generic demon fantasy thing. I find that incredibly tired.
  • Vagrant song certainly unique. I don't call it bad, but it had a hard time ringing with me
  • I was actually kind of glad you decided to quit that one.
  • So, if we're looking at games that I think does CA uh combat one of the best I'm trying to think is I mean Osworn is definitely up there.
  • That's the highlight. I mean, this is also a boss battler, but it is a campaign. But each boss is unique. I love the way that it utilizes the battle flow system. The fact that you can use cards or dice.
  • Their dedication to the secret boss. I applaud. That they they did everything they could to keep it all a mystery.
  • But then on repeat, the the mystery is gone, but the combat is still still great.
  • Because that's all it is is boss fights. I think a game funny enough that does boss fights terribly is one we've already talked about Madara
  • Madara's boss fights are [ __ ] bullet sponges with 800 health
  • the AI itself when you're doing the mobs, that works relatively well for the various enemies that are in the game, and they do level up, which is nice. They get more challenging, but it kind of just boils down to more HP and more damage. It does. They still kind of run the exact same way, but they color code it so it's not just a hodgepodge of just enemies.
  • the inverted paradigm system is amazing.
  • And actually a good positive and probably a good negative for some is atto to KDM. It depends on how you like your boss fights.
  • Don't get me wrong, they're they're extremely similar. And it just kind of depends on how you want your boss fights. KDM does it. I'm not saying KDM is necessarily a negative, but in the sense that it's combat can literally boil down to I have a character that can crit on everything
  • It's too It's just way too clunky.
  • God, no. A green [ __ ] Who the hell goes off a D 100?
  • But yeah, folklore the affliction. This was the one had had a really cool world. I like the the fable element, the gothic horror stuff. I think the characters were unique. Um but man, fiddly as all hell.
  • Yeah. And I mean, they shot for the open world.
  • It would have just been better if it was if it was uh scenario based.
  • but he doesn't want to carry any of his [ __ ] to my house.
  • I want to see it. I want to see this game of his that he owns like everything for
  • I didn't ever bring this one up because I haven't touched it in years.
  • Yeah, I know. I know. You would think with how much [ __ ] he has and how much he doesn't touch it, you would that he would want to play it. I told him we could have three. We could get cuz you'd be in on it, but he doesn't want to carry it over to my house.

  • And so you're trying to constantly manipulate the guards, which is something that happens in many different heist movies where there are guards that you have to trick or or manipulate a little bit so that you can get into the museum or the bank or wherever you're trying to break into.
  • Among all these games might even capture the heist theme the best uh the core beats of a heist movie out of any of these games.
  • This doesn't exactly fit into heist themes in that like this is more like everyone is an independent robber trying to leech off of each other a little bit rather than assembling a team of people to go to one place together.
  • So I really like this idea of of bluffing, of table talk, of of sneakery, uh sneaking around to try to get to the location that you want without anyone else going there, and also trying to read other players and see the location they really want to go to and try to pick that location when they are the mastermind.
  • There's a lot of talk and negotiation almost between the players in those regards that I see in a lot of heist movies where the character dynamics are really really good.
  • Perhaps one of the best themed best heist themed games or games that lean into the heist theme and really hits many of these beats of a heist movie.
  • But as you play, your cards might come up in a different this deck building game in a different way than you were intending to go and you have to pivot and you have to choose a different way or a different artifact to target.
  • The only reason I didn't put it number one is that it isn't cooperative.
  • And so I chose The Game at number one even though The Game is fairly abstract.
  • Um but it is cooperative which I think is a key element of a of a heist game heist movie.
  • But it is a game about breaking into a bank or a vault and I I think it captures the heist theme pretty well even in its abstract nature.

  • I'm referring to games where the core experience involves plugging in one or more modules that are part of the core game that have a significant impact on gameplay.
  • I'm not just talking about variable setups where maybe you have a few tokens or tiles that are slightly different than in a previous game.
  • I'm also not talking about player asymmetry where each player is a different character or different faction, things like that.
  • I'm also not including expansion modules.
  • I'm talking about the where the core game is designed around the idea where modules shape the core game experience.
  • This game is essentially infinitely modular.
  • this is perhaps the the best example that I'll have on this entire list of a truly modular game where the core experience of Shackleton base depends on you plugging in these three modules that have a significant impact on the game.
  • To say this is a large game is an understatement, but with these different region modules comes a ton of variety.
  • you are plugging in different elements to create a new unique experience rather than a scenario where it says like this is the scenario that you're playing.
  • all modular setup that all that all modular setup does take some work to put together and reset.
  • I think the takedown is almost worse because you're like, "Oh, we finished playing the game. Now we get and you have to sort out all of these different components."
  • I think that is a great space for modularity in a game like this.
  • You can really play the same temple track over and over again in Lost Arms Vernac and get plenty of replayability out of it.
  • I think Clank I think is my favorite modular game where just with the map modularity uh just flipping over which side of the board you're going to play on um can add can really make each game feel quite different every time you play.
  • We are talking about big modules that you are plugging into the game in from that are built into the core experience and they are making the game feel different or unique or harder or easier um or shorter or longer.

Pros
  • Modular map provides more variety than the original Clank.
  • More ways to heal compared to original Clank.
  • Prisoner aspect and collecting items/secrets offers more victory point opportunities.
  • Cards have useful 'arrive' and 'acquire' abilities.
  • Relatively quick to get to the table and simple to set up.
  • The moments of tension when drawing from the bag can be exciting.
Cons
  • Still has too much randomness for the host's preference.
  • Randomness can be frustrating and lead to players being steamrolled.
  • Limited ways to mitigate the randomness of the Clank bag.
  • The mechanic where everyone leaving the dungeon results in no one getting bonus points feels like a wash.
  • Rules for not escaping result in a score of zero, which can feel punitive.
  • Poor storage solution and insufficient number of bags.
  • Only one player board for multiple token types is annoying.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Bag Building/Drawing — Cubes are drawn from a bag, which can lead to players being attacked by the dragon if their cubes are drawn. Mitigation for this is limited.
  • Deck Building — Standard deck builder where cards go into the discard pile, and the discard pile is shuffled into the deck when unable to draw. The game is described as a 'perfectly serviceable deck builder'.
  • market/card drafting — Players can buy cards from a market. Some cards have immediate effects upon entering the market or being acquired.
  • Modular Board — The game is broken up into different tiles that are shuffled together, making the map different each time.
  • Set Collection — Players collect artifacts, prisoners, and secrets, which offer different ways to gain victory points.

  • There's not really enough ways also for you to heal to mitigate that. So, it could be very frustrating when you're playing a game that just allows you to die super quickly with no real way to offset it.
  • The issue that I kind of have, funny enough, with the everyone gets out problem is it is it's almost a wash because if everyone leaves, then everyone gets their 20 points. Therefore, nobody got 20 points.
  • The storage solution is ass, and they they don't even give you enough bags.
  • I think Clank Catacombs is it's a good game.

  • Modular Board — I like having the board in Clank where in this deck building adventure, you venture down into a dungeon, following different paths and collecting artifacts, collecting tokens, trying to score as many points, and trying to run back out of that dungeon before the dragon eats me.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So, by this I specifically mean these are games that are not campaign games and these are games where I feel like I'm going on an adventure.
  • Um, hopefully with some variability, but not a campaign game, not a game where you have persistent elements continuing from session to session.
  • And really crucially, I I do want to stress the idea that I want to feel like I'm going on an adventure.
  • It means that you can let players feel powerful rather quickly.
  • Um, go from from zero to hero rather quickly, weak to strong in a single session in these oneshot adventure games.
  • It's murky whether you're a hero or not, but it's clear as day that fun will be had on this adventure.
  • I was much more interested in the story I was telling than
  • At number two, we have Clank. And it's various iterations, but I still go back to the classic Clank.
  • I like having the board in Clank where in this deck building adventure, you venture down into a dungeon, following different paths and collecting artifacts, collecting tokens, trying to score as many points, and trying to run back out of that dungeon before the dragon eats me.
  • At number one, I am going to pick a Stommyer game. I'm going to pick Vantage here because I designed Vantage.
  • I wanted players to be able to sit down, crash on the Vantage planet, go on an adventure, and then clean it up and have a completely new adventure.
  • Vantage gives you essentially around 7,000 different choices that you can make throughout the game. I tried to make it a big enough world that no adventure is the same.
  • Scythe, you know, I thought about putting Scythe on this list because Scythe is a little bit a style of adventure game along the lines of a Clank or The Witcher, u maybe Western Legends, but Scythe leans a lot more into the engine building and kind of the empire building elements, uh, the optimization puzzle, um, than it is about just one character going on an adventure.
  • So, I I didn't think it quite fit into this category of adventure game.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Clank is a great deck builder that you're going down into the caverns and you're trying to gather as much stuff and then come back up before you get killed by a dragon basically
  • the story lines work really well on this but even without that part and sometimes we'll just play with just the cards that have no story
  • it's a heads down euro-y experience and I love how the systems interact so tightly
  • it's immediately fun and interesting and it's got this really cool mechanic where you're putting down dudes and the more dudes on a thing the more of whatever that resource trees or rocks whatever you get
  • eight totally different maps that all use the same system so it all uses the same deck of cards and then kind of three different sets come out and simultaneously you have to pick which one you're going to use
