hello in celebration of hitting 10,000 subscribers I have a very special treat for you today I'm going to show you a new way to discover board games that are perfectly suited to your tastes plus I'll guide you through 20 games to pinpoint the characteristics that you love
most today board game dad celebrates 10,000 subscribers and I want to thank you thank you for watching for subscribing and for commenting I started the channel 3 years ago and I opened appropriately with a dad joke it was a pun about giraffes and I think everyone that watched the video understood that it was a joke that it was a pun except maybe players of Katan see players of Katan they roll a seven and then they take things literally in the time since then I've given several revisions to my perfect board game formula the five characteristics that I use to describe board games to Mark the 10,000 subscriber Milestone I wanted to update the perfect board game quiz to reflect the newest version of this rating system so in this video I'm going to show you how I take the quiz and I think that will make a little more transparent my own personal biases then we're going to talk about how to interpret the results and what you can do with them in order to find board games that you love I think the best way to understand the rating system is by example so I've prepared 20 reviews for you to see these attributes at their extremes and then lastly at the end of this video I'm going to show you a few more tools for finding board games on the perfboard game.com so when you arrive on the landing page for the quiz the first thing you're going to see is the quiz tutorial we don't need that because I'm going to walk you through it so I'm going to skip this part and we'll go to the first question the quiz is going to
be having you rank your preferences with a divider things that you like are above the divider divider and things that you don't like are below it also if there's anything in the quiz that you don't understand or you don't want it to influence your score you can drag it to the left in order to remove that option so as I look at this I find myself going into two modes sometimes when I'm with my friends I really like games that have complex puzzles but when I'm with my family I I'm willing to play something that's a little simpler because I care about engaging my kids if you're like me and you often find yourself in two or more modes then I would encourage you to take the quiz from the standpoint of one of those modes so that you can get the best recommendations so in this case I'm going to assume I'm taking this for myself where I like complex puzzles the most so that's going to go on the top I don't care very much for adventure narrative role playing so I'm going to drag that below the line I like time with family I like social Gatherings um I actually do like some conflict but not a whole lot of conflict so I'll put that there and then as far as bets and wagers I care for that least of all I I definitely want that at the bottom because I'm not a big fan of luck once you've done that click next and you continue with the quiz now I'm not going
to answer all of the questions but we will jump to my results if you are interested in having me walk through the entire quiz I'll go ahead and I'll put a link to another video in the description after answering about four or five questions you'll arrive at the results page which has a lot of information so let's first look at it section by section first you have your perfect board game formula which is broken down by attribute after that are the recommendations these games are exact matches to the formula up above I will say that in my case I have several recommendations but depending on your answers you might not have very many games that are an exact match if that's the case you can actually tweak your results up here and update the results to find recommendations that will match whatever you do up above and then after all the recommendations it'll describe what your priority is so in my case my answers say that I heavily prioritize strategy and so the recommendations below are games that are highly ranked and have that strategy emphasis but not necessarily the other attributes and then the last thing I want you to know is that this URL is something that you can actually bookm Mark so if you save this in your browser you can go back to this page anytime and see any changes or updates to the recommendations but for now what we're going to do is we're going to look at the five attributes and
20 games that best exist exemplify these attributes however as I've got 20 games that I'm going to name here rather than talk about each game in depth you can actually check out this video description for a link to my review on the perfect board game website that way I don't have to make a video that's 30 minutes long and you can hone in on those that strike Accord with you so the first attribute is design and this is the one that's probably the most confusing for people though it can be helpful if you think of it using terminology that we used to use Euro games versus amerit Trash now these days there's too much crossover between games designed in America and Europe to use those as titles to categorize games but the idea is that Euro games or mechanical games are games that are designed where mechanics are first gameplay is first and the theme feeds into the mechanics whereas thematic games are games where story simulation or role playing are the priority in the mechanics FEI the story now here's where my bias sets in because personally I don't play a lot of truly thematic games I would say that all role playing games are over here 18xx games are over there war games and simulation games are over there and I hardly play any of those so the game that I'm going to name is one that isn't truly a thematic game it's more of a Euro game as well but it's very thematic and it's new too it's
called daylight and it's a game about saving the Earth from global warming it's a Cooperative game and the sweet spot for me is right in the middle these are Euro games with a thematic tilt and possibly my favorite game of all time is Imperial but for mechanical games I think it really depends on what mechanic you want to play so rather than name just one I've got 10 games for you and if you want you can pause this video or just check out the description to see each one and a link to my review of each the next attribute is interaction or the degree to which other players influence how you play so at one extreme are the games that are entirely isolated sometimes people would call these games that are playing solitire with other people um I think Rolland rights or fliping rights are a great example of games like this and my recommendation would be kuuba whereas at The Other Extreme are games where the the point of the game is interaction that is the game and so for those games I think social deduction are the best examples and for that I would recommend Avalon now Artistry describes how beautiful a game is and this is actually one of the changes that I made to the profile back in the day this used to be luck attribute and I've since then Incorporated luck into the strategy attribute which we'll talk about next and I've replaced it with artistry I
chose Artistry because it seems that these days with Kickstarter and everything else more people consider the look of a game when making purchasing decisions that's how I feel about Sushi Boat a game that I enjoy in large part because it creates The Familiar setting of a conveyor belt sushi restaurant a familiar experience for us here in Japan at the opposite extreme games with restrained Artistry focus more on the functionality of components in so far as they serve gameplay one of my favorite games on this end is Puerto Rico the next attribute is strategy and again there are a lot of ways to interpret that I think of it as a gradient between skill and luck or another way to describe this is what is the chance that an experienced player can be beat by an inexperienced player just based on luck so at one extreme are games that are entirely skill-based there's absolutely no element of luck at all and my favorite game at that extreme is Carnegie personally I don't think there's any other attribute where I have a stronger bias if I were to graph my potential enjoyment for a game against the strategy gradient it would probably look something like this nevertheless I do have a game that is almost entirely luck that I still enjoy and though I don't own it I play it online and that game is called can't stop and then the final attribute is complexity and here
is where my personal board game collection is the most varied because the hobbyist in me really likes the complex games whereas the board game dad in me likes to play Simple games with my kids but I would describe complexity as how long does it take to teach the rules however it's also one more element in that which is that sometimes even a simple game can have a lot to think about so the m most complex games are those that have a lot of rules and it takes a long time to think about what you're going to do on your turn so for that I think the tole of Sera is the best at making complex games and my recommendation is on Mars whereas On The Other Extreme the simplest game and the one that I would most highly recommend is called the mind so again when you get your results on the perfect board game quiz you can tweak any of these attributes and then update the list to get new recommendations that's not all I've updated on the perfect boo.com however on the main search page down below you can now look up the lists of the top 50 games in any of these extremes now on the website those ratings are also influenced by other people in fact you can rate games there too so those lists are always going to be changing furthermore I've started to add editor recommendations so if you
look up a popular game like wingspan for example and you scroll down to the bottom you'll find other games and my description of why you might like them at the bottom under editor recommendations and then finally I'm working on one more feature which I haven't published at the time of this filming but it's called the publisher Spotlight and what it is is a way to recommend Publishers based on your profile so soon this will be incorporated into the quiz it may be a brand new section or it'll be its own page where you can look at Publishers and even filter Publishers by their specialty so after 3 years and 10,000 subscribers I am very excited to continue to share games using the perfect board game.com if this is something that excites you too I would encourage you to not only take the quiz but also maybe share it on social Med media and help spread the word of what this website is for and how it can be utilized anyway thanks again for watching I'll see you next time bye-bye
