If you Like Chess Try These Games!
whatever your heart tells you Jeff that's what we're going to do looks ridiculous because it looks like you're stuck in Winter and I'm stuck in [Music] summer hello everyone welcome back to Foster the meele a Channel all about po games and poor G things exactly we are here today to do another video that is if you like this well then try that or perhaps it's called if you like that try this I can't remember which way the words were ordered but that's what we're doing and today's game is going to be chess which just so happens to be a game that is beloved all over the world Jeff's been playing it since he was a kid I've played it in my life so there you go that's what we're doing what was that I've had a sne do you know when you abot the sneeze and it gets tingly yes I've had that feeling well I had that tingling feeling and it just wouldn't go away and a sneeze wasn't coming oh does it need to come now I forgot to tell you uh when Juno ate out of the cheese Bowl yeah she got the hiccups a I left a cheese bowl bowl of cheese because okay just quick story I was making these flatbreads and they had like a cheese spread from hellofresh and we only get two people cuz we're only two people and I accidentally made it for four so I made like double the cheese and so there was a lot of leftover cheese and Juno's been sneaking licks of the bowl the cheese Bowl we we call it anyways let's get into the video so I'm sure most of you know what chess is but chess is like an abstract strategy game from times of old okay it is a game that so many people love young old all different cultures all different everywhere just people be loving chess okay Jeff loves chess he plays it on an app sometimes we also have like a so bad at it Jeff's so bad at it our friend Dan pretty good at it he would like to say he would say is uh we also do have like an electronic chess board that allows you to play like remotely with people which is pretty cool but we wanted to offer some suggestions for some board games that you could try if you enjoy the game of chess right M all right let's get into it we got a little bit of a list we're going to go through it and here we goce so the first game that we want it to recommend is going to be Cathedral now you can do Cathedral or you can do Cathedral World although Cathedral world is a lot more difficult to find but it is our preference pretty we haven't played regular Cathedral they're the same game it's just Cathedral world is like oh the yeah right theer pieces the pieces represent the world EX like buildings and stuff right exactly so essentially in Cathedral you are playing as two different sides and you are putting out pieces what that was a that was a funny statement you're playing as two you're playing two different sides well you are you're playing as this side and that side the dark side and the light side anyways so you are putting out these pieces into this grid board and the pieces are like polyomino shape they're all different like almost like Tetris like shapes and what you are trying to do is you are trying to get all of your pieces onto the board before the other person does and you can block them off by you know kind of like going from one edge of the board to the other if you have created some kind of like a wall or a barrier you cut the % off from that area that's now your area orthogonally diagonal doesn't count like you can't have two pieces that are diagonally right attached they have to be orthogonally adjacent in order to create the wall exactly so it's a very like it's no luck it's 100% strategy you are just trying to optimize the placement of your pieces and trying to block the other person so that they cannot do the same all of the pieces do fit in in this board and it's almost like a mini game when you're done with a game you get to put all the pieces in the board and see if you can figure out that puzzle which yeah can't do it I do think like some people have like broken this game oh really yeah I think there's like a way to like always win if you're one of the sides which in my opinion is like don't do that don't do that that's L fun that's silly that's less fun um yeah so that's the first suggestion typically like you can find Cathedral relatively easily but it's just going to be like wooden or resin or plastic pieces but if you can find yourself a copy of Cathedral world it is like it's a nice little showpiece it's beautiful like it's a game that we always play outside it's like a summertime outdoor game for us we play on the patio all of the b-roll that I have of us playing this game is US playing it outside yeah but we haven't exclusively played it outside no but it's a game we enjoy playing outside what makes in your brain what makes something an outside game we play it outside just one time we've played that game outside more than we you're not answering the question we play it outside more than inside that's the criteria sure in that case it's an outside game but you can play it inside just FYI in case you were wondering next game Jeff you pick one next up on our list is a game called War chest and I don't know if Jam's ever played this game uh this is a onev one game where you will have a bunch of different unit types there could be an Archer there could be a knight there could be uh Bard uh there's all of these different unit types that you can manipulate around this abstract board it's very chess-like because all you're trying to do is get to different areas of this map and control them I believe it's the first to control six never played it uh six I I've never read the rule book what I've only ever played the game I know how to play the game but I've never read the rule book how do you know that you know how to play if you read okay uh it and I should mention it's not strictly a 1 V one experience but um I I only ever want to play this at at One V one two play uh but yeah anyway so ultimately you have all these different unit types have different abilities like the Archer can attack two spaces away uh on your turn you're going to have tokens in front of you of uh the either the Royal coin or your troop types and then when you have your troop tokens you can do multiple things with them you can activate the troop token that's already out on the board you can put it out on the board if you have an open spawn spot you can stack it on a unit of uh like faction uh to make it stronger um you can also activate it to basically take control of one of the control spots on the board and then you you again these these control points can uh change back and forth depending on who's in that spot and who triggers their units that are on it but ultimately what you're doing is trying to kill the other players units and take control of these um control points I never played it so I'm just gonna believe I think you would re I it's a game that's not in our collection um it's an older game isn't it I've been recently playing it again with Charlie uh I'm also playing a game with Mike uh and I used to play it a a bit Max was actually the one that introduced me to it I've just never bought a copy because I'm not entirely sure if you'll like it right but I think you would I don't know but it's one I think we should add to our collection maybe yeah we should we should add every game to our collection we are collectors the next game on the list is going to be a little game called Hive now Hive is a very chess-like game essentially it is a IC tiles and you are each playing as kind of like a Well a different Hive everybody has their own Queen B and you are trying to surround the other players queen bee with your bug tiles you have a variety of different bug tiles that all move in function in different ways based on what they are some of them can only like move one space some of them can like jump over things and and that's all you're trying to do you are trying to surround the other person's Queen B there are a lot of different expansions you can get that come with different types of bugs that then add in different types of mechanics uh this is a game that you this is an outside game okay this is a game you could take anywhere there's a pocket version uh and it's just literally like a bag with tiles so it's super simple once again it's all strategy because you need to know how the different bugs are playing and you need to kind of figure out how to win yeah I'll just mention like when you play out to like all of these bug tokens uh have to basically touch each other um so you actually end up creating this awesome cool little grid between the two players that you can like you know that I can't remember exactly but like the ants can only move outside or the spiders can like move yeah it's it's it's so good it is a game that we don't own and the reason that we don't own it is because we keep wanting to get the pocket version cuz I do think that we would play this mostly like as a travel game but the pocket version's almost as much as the regular version and so we're like it's pricey it is pricey because it's acrylic it's acrylic chunky yeah pieces and it's popular for sure all right next up on our list we have Stratego but a specific version of Stratego called Lord of the Rings the confrontation yeah if you've watched our Channel you know this game I've talked about it a ton it's one of my favorite games of all time uh stro or Lord of the Rings of Confrontation is a hidden movement game where in Lord of the Rings of Confrontation one side is playing as Sauron trying to find Frodo the uh or I think froto and the Gang Frodo no just Frodo to kill Frodo or get I think five of their troops into the Shire the fellowship is trying to get Frodo to M Doom um and that's basically it if you achieve one of those objectives you win so on your turn you're going to be effectively moving one of your pieces and they are hidden from each other they are facing you and not your opponent you're going to move you're going to battle by revealing those characters when they interact with your enemy there's a tiny bit of card play in terms of like Power Cards and and some instant abilities and that thing but everyone has each character has their own inherent power value that they're going to uh invoke during that battle um you can only ever move forward in this game there's no unless like there's a card or an ability character ability allows you to move sideways or you know move a certain amount of spaces forward or retreat but primarily you're only ever moving forward it's very strategic and very um punishing I think to folks that maybe don't really go in with a concept of how to win I'm trying to be polite to Jamie here I don't win this game very often um I think I won like one time uh there you know it's it's very much about where you're putting your pieces and you know creating Pathways for froto to go through or blocking those paths and and playing the right cards at the right time yes it's easier if you play as Sauron and his friends versus froto and his friends and Jeff typically plays as Sauron so yeah that's not at all accurate I think the last two games I beat you I was fro because you kept saying that you kept being like you saon and I was like well fine then you be saon and and then I won twice as froto I don't believe you okay the next game on the list is probably the cutest version of a chess like game that you can find and that is going to be Boop now let me tell you a little something about Boop there's a bunch of different variations well there's two right now there's a third one coming out and then hopefully a fourth one coming out later really so Boop is a game where you are playing out kittens and cats onto a bed and every time that you place out a kitten or a cat which you will get after making a row of three kittens they are going to Boop each other as cats do so you may place out a kitten onto the board and when Jeff is looking at me because say I'm terrible at this game and I always need help to know which way things Boop but you place out your kitten and anything surrounding it is going to Boop into the next square space unless they are blocked by another cat or kitten you can Boop yourself doesn't matter you boop somebody else a two-player only everybody be booping everybody be booping always be booping okay so once you get three kittens in a row you then get a cat and once you get what three cats and once you get three cats in a row no you get three cats you upgrade the three One kitten gets you three cats no when you get three kittens in a row you get three cats once you get three cats in a row you win the game this is a game once again of all strategy no luck unless you're just willing nilly throwing kittens and cats out there hoping that you don't Boop yourself which is basically how I play it's adorable anybody can play it and it's super fun I very much enjoy playing this against you and Mike because neither of you seem to be able to grab put your head around it me and Mike once played a game of Boop forever and we were like how do I don't know what's going on we couldn't like we were like booping ourselves and we're like I don't know what's happening and the game lasted for like two months it was crazy I mean to be fair uh Joe uh CL Joe middle class Joe and I played Boop like three or four times a day for weeks yeah true so I got I got a head and that was when it first came on BGA like I got a head start on that game pretty heavily boob's great love boob next up on the list is the game we haven't played in a hot minute we don't own it and we don't own it which is I could probably get I have Zach's copy in the car right now I get that fixed I could get his cup uh that is Santorini Santorini is probably one of the closest like direct comparisons um of of the list in Santorini you and your opponent are effectively building buildings and the objective of the game is to be the first person to get on top of you a a a third level building M so how you're doing that is you're moving around this grid and you are allowed to build adjacent to yourself so ultimately what's going to end up happening is both of you are going manipulate through your through this grid and for example if Jamie is has a third level built but she's trying to get herself up to that because you can't you have to go you have to move up one level at a time so if I see she's kind of moving towards there I can move over get adjacent to her building and put a cap on it a fourth level which stops her from being able to be on top of it don't um the Dome tiles so ultimately what you're doing is moving around this grid trying to build build around yourself and move up to the top of these buildings so that you end up on the third level with your worker first yeah you can move on your turn or build I believe I don't think you can do both um there's some asymmetrical abilities that can come in this game but the base game is basically that premise it is very difficult I am for some reason incredibly terrible at this game I don't think I've ever won I don't think I've ever won sanini yeah I there was a a span of time there where I was playing it on repeat with somebody on BGA and they crushed me every single time and I was like I am bad at this game yeah I think that that's a a game that really shows a skill Gap yes definitely if you've played a lot of santerini you're a lot of strategy yeah you're probably G to crush noobs totes but yeah sanini is like I would love to play that again it's been it's been a while it's in the car the next one on our list is wall now this is part of like the Q Series so there's Corridor and Quattro and a bunch of them but we've only played koal now in koal you have a kind of like a little grid with raised pieces then there's going to be a neutral color of stones on that grid and then one person's going to play as a different color stone and the other play player as a different color what you're going to be doing is you are placing out your stones and then you have to pick them up and move them orthogonally until you've run out of the ones that you have in the stack includes the neutral Stones as well as the other player Stones what you're trying to do is be the first person to get four of your stones in a row um and essentially you just get one turn to move stuff and the next person's going to go and they're going to move stuff moving your stuff and it's really it's kind of like a tug-of-war game because you have to like look at the stack and think about how far that stack is going to get you and make sure you're not dropping your opponent Stones off in a place that's going to allow them to win um it's a relatively like quick game to play it's it is one of those games very much so like Cathedral where you can just leave it set up and and play a quick game it is like pure abstract strategy there is no theme so it is very similar to chess in that way it's one of those games where you almost have to like look at your current turn and then like your next turn and also paying attention to your opponent's for current turn and their next turn because like you might think well you just need to get like four in a stack and then you can just Place those out but like that's rarely going to happen because there's three color stones out and once you play them out you can't just be like oop and take them back like theoretically you have to like play the moat and leave them so you just you have to be careful to not accidentally let somebody else win yep all right last up on the list is uh a game from Ivy Studios and that is Mythic Mischief uh Mythic Mischief is a faction-based asymmetrical abstract game where you are trying to basically put the opponent's Pawns in front of the grounds keeper so there's going to volume one yeah um yeah there's a it's like librarian the second one groundskeeper is the first one no librarian's the first one doesn't matter ultimately there's one character in each of these versions that you are trying to put the other person's Pawns in front of and then they're going to get put off the board and you're going to score points so everyone kind of has their own movement abilities the groundskeeper or librarian moves in its own systematic way yeah it's very abstract you can move uh hedges around you can move uh shelves around get into other people's way because it's a bit programmatic too where on your turn you kind of like have to move in certain ways and so if you kind of get someone cornered they can get caught uh it's incredibly challenging and also is very difficult to play against people that know what they're doing it's a very strategic game like um I'm bad at it like knowing the factions and how they all work because again like certain factions might be able to like warp between this tile and that tile yeah uh some might be able to move and manipulate the groundskeeper more than others one might be able to move the hedges and the the shelves more than another uh one might be allowed to like move swap their position with another uh person note on the board that sort of thing uh but again at the end of the day all you're trying to do is get the other team's pawns caught effectively yeah you're trying to put them in the path of the groundkeeper trying to put them in Checkmate uh and score victory points yeah it is an extremely chess like game it is very for me I find it very difficult I am terrible at this game and like we mentioned there's two volumes so you can kind of pick the theme that you like better or the characters that you like better because they're all kind of like you know like almost Halloween as there's like werewolves and there's witches and there's Frankenstein and goblins and like all Le into the the I wouldn't say spooky but it it leans into the Halloweeny feels for sure definitely for sure so those are some games that we would love to recommend to you if you enjoy chess we do have a few honorable mentions uh some of them we haven't played but we feel like we should mention because they are typically associated with chess uh the first one being go which is probably even older than chess and more popular than chess and and the second one is onama we haven't played either of these we do we did just get a copy of onama and I really want to play it because I do think that we would enjoy it um there there is a third one I just want to throw out uh it's actually from uh one of my favorite novels King killer or uh yeah King killer king killer Chronicles yeah and that's called Tac right uh haven't played it it's a game system that was I think created in that book and it is you can buy it as a you can buy it and there's two others that have played but Jeff hasn't played that I just wanted to mention quickly because I think that they are very good for people who enjoy chess and that is that time you killed me and that is a pandasaurus game where you are playing past present and future and you are moving between the times and trying to like get somebody out before they get you out and then the other one is called philosophy which is a very like relaxing kind of tile placement game but it works very similarly to like Hive in that each of the tiles does something special and you're you're trying to beat the other player out in a completely like strategic game um so those are a few other ones that you can check out as well but I think that's everything that we have we'd love to know down in the comments below if you have any suggestions for chess like games we would love to know please let us know please no no no no yes yes yes please let us know if you're interested buying board games like any of the manyu we mentioned today you should first start by checking your friendly local gaming store and for us make her her own little Nook being Nook I'm hot your own fault is that public knowledge I think so yeah they said it to me and they didn't say don't say anything are you sure I thought that I thought that you got the three kittens and then you got one cat well then doesn't matter no I want you to look this up because I know in your head you think you're right and I want you to look it up because I
