Board Game Alphabet | Board Game Recommendations from A-Z
what happened brush my teeth that's funny good morning Jeff good morning morning to you see some people will notice that we're wearing the same things that we wore on our Tuesday video well can I go get mine then what was that huh so Nimble today I asked Jeff because he was like I'd like to sit cross-legged in my chair and I was like can you even cross your legs you can't do I know what I noticed Albie's chewed off this side of every sweater that we have with drawstrings just this side freaking cat man [Music] hello everyone and welcome back to Foster The Meatball a Channel all about board games and Sour Patch Kids and chewing I'm not gonna chew mine right now we are here today with another kind of like challenge kind of like recommendation kind of like list type of video it's a little bit of everything it's a tag let's call it we were tagged by our good friend Reggie over at rolling Reggie who just started his YouTube channel finally like finally Reggie we've literally been waiting and guess what it's freaking amazing so you may know Reggie he's on Instagram as rolling Reggie as well he's in our Discord you know so if you're in the Discord you probably you'd probably chat with Reggie you're there he's part of the ofpg voices he's part of our family oh fpg boy says crew whoa it's just because it's so early in the morning so you've probably seen him on those episodes as well and his video will be linked below because he has challenged us he has tagged us to do this video go check them out please please yes Reggie is like the best so the video is the board game alphabet now how Reggie's been been doing it he's been doing it in sections like a to J and then K to something and then something to something else but we're gonna do the whole alphabet because we're all in baby yep and what we've done is I've taken half the alphabet and Jeff has taken the other half of the alphabet and what we're going to do with an alternate we're going to alternate this is a back and forth this is a one-two type of situation so we have each selected a game from that letter of the alphabet and how we've done it I think Reggie did it as like his favorite games with that letter we wanted to do it as games that we don't necessarily talk about as much as some other games so taking an opportunity to let you now some of them we have talked about before just by the nature of the Beast because yeah there's just some letters that are just only some games a lot of the ones I have I certainly haven't touched on too much one I haven't played because it was a really difficult letter I wonder what letter that could be but yeah I'm Gonna Get Us started with the letter A what's a b this is why Jeff and I were never cheerleaders I can't even cross his legs I was asked but I declined I could not picture you as a cheerleader why give me a j j give me an e e give me an f f you're another f what's that spell desk nice okay yeah for a the game that I have picked is actually a new game and it's called Acropolis and this is from hashet games so Acropolis is a really interesting tile placement like City Builder type of game you're building out but you're also building up the way that you do it and the way that you score is based on the tiles that are kind of around you based on the color tile that you're placing or the type of tile that you're placing there's also like is it fountains that you're placing out yeah I can't remember if it's fountains or monuments but yeah monuments something like that and it's just a game that honestly I feel like we haven't really played I know like ginkopolis is the only thing that I can think of llama land also is kind of similar where you're building up but this is just like a really fun puzzly tile placement game it's cute It's relatively quick yeah I think it's like a a better intro level to games like I think you'd play this and then maybe go to ginkopolis yes I told a little bit less complexity to get really cool because all the little sectors of the city have different like scoring objectives like some want to be surrounded by specifics other District types some want to be right on the edge of the district it's cool I like that I have b b and I have chosen aggressive we're gonna be cheering this whole time I've chosen a game that we've recently talked about off camera with our friends Nick and Mike over at brothers and that's baseball highlights 2045.
baseball highlights 2045 is from Eagle Griffin games and it is a deck builder and you are playing baseball and it's really cool because there's different types of players there's Naturals which are like humans that are just really good at baseball they're cyborgs and then there's robots I believe if I remember correctly it's been a hot minute since we played this bad boy Jamie's not a huge fan it's confusing the base running in the game is confusing I don't find it as confusing as Jamie does but it is confusing and would be effortal for I think a lot of people but I'm a big Sports guy I don't think there's a ton of really good like sports games out there I agree um and this one I think is very good I don't know much about the lore of the game but apparently there's some really cool lore in the game like story around why this is all happening which I I haven't read but it's obviously like a futuristic like half the team is cyborgs and like I'm pretty sure a lot of the players are like actual player names but like yeah no 100 yeah they're just changed is that like Mark Maguire would be like Mark Magoon Nick yeah Nick Magoon or something like that it's not that big Lagoon next up is the letter c a b c everybody's with me and for that game I am pick I'm gonna talk about cult Express there was a ton of different games that I could have picked in the C category but this is one that I just feel like doesn't get enough love this game is so fun when you have the right group of people and you have a lot of people so basically this is a sequencing or is it called programming the mechanism I think is programming sequencing whatever but you are choosing different cards from your hand you are going to be laying them down each one at a time on top of each other and then you're going to be revealing them and then carrying out those actions so you don't actually know if the card that you chose is gonna end up letting you do the thing you really want it to do because somebody else's move could have messed it up there is a 3D train it's 3D and it's huge and there's like little meeples and you're like jumping up on top of the train and then you're punching people and then you're like shooting people and then you're like stealing Loot and there's diamonds and there's briefcases and it's hilarious like this game we played uh it is on BGA and we played it on VGA with our friends over at nerds of the West go check them out go check them out they introduced us to this game and I we laughed so much it is just so silly it's so fun and I would say if you get a chance to play this I would recommend there is an Express version We own it but haven't played it but it doesn't have the train I do prefer The Full Experience yeah I love that game it's so it could be so mean too it's so mean but like the funny thing is it's mean but like you don't necessarily get a Target so somebody usually ends up being the punching bag and it is not normally a planned yeah D is up for me and I've chosen deception murder in Hong Kong uh deception and murder Hong Kong is a big party social deduction game where one person is playing as the murderer everybody's a suspect yeah everyone's a suspect there's prompts in the middle of the table you're trying to as the murderer dissuade people from identifying you as the murderer and everyone is equally as suspect one person is playing as the like not a private investigator but uh I can't remember the name for it but they're controlling the prompts in the middle to help everyone identify who the murderer is and they're very abstract Clues very abstract we've played this I think four or five times now and the more the better it's so fun I'm not a big social deduction party game type of guy but that is one I will play anytime someone wants to I have e and for e e I am going to be talking about explorers of the North Sea so I feel like West Kingdom that series gets a ton of love so Tigers is getting a ton of love I think Raiders Raiders but explorers people are sleeping on this game so basically this is like a pick up and deliver kind of game so you are kind of building out like this map and building on different islands and you're picking up animals and things from those islands and then you're taking them back to Shore and you're trying to block off other people from being being able to get resources and things like that and so it's like it's it's a bit of a mean game it's really cute also of all of those now we haven't played one of the North Sea games ship rights we haven't played shipwrites right but I feel like the entire like series or world this is the most unique of all of them because it's not necessarily like the worker placement or like you know it's just different it's lighter and I really like it f for me next I've chosen a Friedman freeze game called fine sand fine sand is one of the most unique games I've ever played it's actually a deck deconstruction game where you have a bunch of cards in your hand with differing values and you're playing through actions on your turn in order to actually get rid of those cards from your hand and you're doing that by paying to play sand castles you also have a mechanic where if you do certain things you can actually pass one of your cards to a neighbor we've just fallen in love with freedom freeze games and this was really really unique and one I very much enjoyed playing and think it needs a little bit more love my next one for the letter G is Ghost Stories we actually do have a full playthrough on this from like last year sometime I believe those stories is a bit of like uh not overly complex but it does have its complexities within it but essentially it's like I guess Tower Defense you have all these ghosts and the ghosts are coming in at you and you are trying to your village and you are trying to defeat the ghosts and it is a Cooperative game you have to work together to try and defeat the ghost but they continue to get stronger and stronger and you are kind of moving around a grid in order to take actions and it is so good it is extremely challenging like this is one of those games where it's like a badge of honor if you win and we've just had such a great time with it I love the theme I love the artwork it's one that you play and lose and then you're like let's go let's go again I think I can do it this time but it is like it's very very difficult all right I have H next and I've actually there's no way I was doing this this without picking a newvey game I've picked hallertau is a very stereotypical uve game where you are collecting resources in order to buy upgrades and basically you have this big house thing that's moving along this track and the further you go along the track to the right the more points you're going to score but in order to do that you have to pay resources and also clear out sections of this track in order to be able to move your house to the right it's got a really really unique resource manipulation track where you have a certain amount of resources and then it kind of degrades over time and it can go up and down and all of these things it's one of the most unique kind of like uvee games that I've played that fall in that similar realm of like Agricola very unique and yet still very UB yeah me I have the letter I and for this one I have picked the aisle of Skye with a neat you thought that I was gonna say I love cats didn't you and this is from Chieftain to King the island sky from Chieftain to King so the Isle of Skye from Chieftain to King is a tile placement game but it also has a bidding mechanic okay so you're building out your little Isle of Skye your little island basically with the roads and the waters and the grass and all that stuff and there's going to be different tiles and you're going to be bidding on it so if I if it's I'm pretty sure if it's my turn I bid on this tile I've taken then Jeff has to take the other one I love tile placement games I'll I love tile placement games this has a nice Scottish theme it's very green you've got a little screen to hold to hide all your stuff so people don't know how much money you have and I just think it's really fun all right next up for me is Jay and I have chosen junk art oh that's a great game junk art is a dexterity game quickly the most easiest way to explain this is you all have an objective of a thing you need to build and you have a bunch of blocks of different shapes they could be a very simple block it could be a flat block it could be a cylinder it could be a ball it could be all of these things and then you are going to have to place pieces uh certain levels and build up your little Monument your jump back or whatever yeah and it's super difficult because if you get the little ball where are you gonna put that how you gonna build on top of the ball and there's like different like mini games almost there's different ways you can play this game like in one mode like you would play a piece and then you'd move to your the left and play a piece on your opponent's path and then you could pass pieces there's a ton of variability in this game junk art is just super super fun uh silliness and I do think a really really good intro game to people that oh yeah aren't into board games oh my God you can pull out anyone and have a good time next up is K and for this I have picked key theft at Cliff Rock Villa because we're just pretending the word the doesn't exist I was going to say this is a t gamer okay game anyways this is the entire series of games from Haba where it's you're solving a mystery so we had the chance to play this at Pax not this past one but the previous 1 and basically you have a bunch of cards that are sprawled in the middle and you are trying to solve the mystery so there's different suspects that could have committed the crime the theft at Cliff Rock Villa and you are trying to figure out rule rule them out so one thing might say Well it definitely was passed this time but before this time so then you know that a specific time that it could be well this person definitely didn't steal the jewels but they might have stolen this so it's timed and you're trying to solve it faster than everybody else while using less Clues so that's the goal you want to solve it using less clue because all the clues are in the middle and you're grabbing them in real time yep you're grabbing them and you're reading it and you're like okay you're writing everything down anyways this is just a really fun kind of mystery type game you can definitely play it with kids and I will say uh is you oh a kid seem so easy I didn't solve it I didn't either we were all for of us very convinced that we had the answer and I think maybe it was either only Ilia or only Tyler but we certainly did not anyways it's a lot of fun l it's far away is for libertalia and we have talked about this we did a video on the new iteration of libertalia Winds of galecrest from stonemeyer games you can go check that out but I still feel like libertalia doesn't give us much get as much love as it should yeah both versions are very good I'll just talk about Winds of galecrest because it's a newer one but basically in libertalia you are just going to have a crew of cards and all of those cards have a unique value and player power and you're going to play those out in sequential order and flip them all one at a time and then you're going to do things based off of what those characters do and primarily what you're trying to do is get loot in order to score victory points at the end of each round I feel like it always generates a ton of like table talk yeah of like wow man like why did you friggin play the chef uh my L game libertalia definitely one we've enjoyed my next letter is M and for this game I am choosing Menara nice which is another game that we got to play at gagglecon with Rodney and Christy and this is a game that I have definitely not played anything well no I haven't played anything quite like it the only the closest thing I can think of is like Rhino hero it's more intense Rhino Heroes way more intense this is an adult version of rhino hero okay so basically this is like a dexterity game and you have different boards and you're putting little like wooden poles and then from there and they're different colors and then from there you need to like stack more pieces and then you're so basically you're building up and then some of the things that you have to do like there's different actions that you have to take and you might need to move an entire board that has like stacked pieces on it to another section of the board without making it fall down or remove pillars or remove pillars and it's just they have this at the boardroom Game Cafe and I've seen it so many times and we have not gotten it and I regret it like we need to buy this game it's like just talking about it now every time we're there I'm like are you sure you don't want to get it and you always say no you should have said so yes whatever it is just so fun when we played we got to like five levels it was impressive it was next up for me is n and I did pick a game that we have chatted about on and off on the channel but it's one we both love it was on my top 50.
that is niroshima hips yeah uh niroshima hex is in my opinion you can play it at higher than two but I think it's a very very good two-player Skirmish game with not a lot of fluff to it yeah it's just a board and some hexagonal tiles and some asymmetry and that's it so there's a ton of different factions you can play in this game and ultimately all you're trying to do is destroy the other person's base and each faction plays completely differently but niroshima hacks is just I think a very accessible Skirmish game that doesn't give you Miniatures and objectives it's just a straight up battler and one we've had a blast with yeah it's great I want to play that again soon too my next letter is oh and for this I have picked a new favorite called oh my brain I have it right here I take it everywhere with me this game is new I don't think it's quite out yet if it's not oh yeah it's coming up very very soon and this is just like a simple card game you start off with nine brain tokens everybody has nine and then you are playing out cards and say I lay a five Jeff has to lay a card higher than five then the next person has to lay a card higher than that so you're doing that until you can't play a card and when you can't play a card you have to get rid of one of your brains and then start over basically and there's different ways that you can lose brains gain brains all that stuff the point of the game is to be the last person left with brains and you're just playing round over round until that happens this game is a hoot it is so much fun we absolutely love it and it is so mean it's really mean so if you don't like me and games don't play it but if you like mean games and you think they're fun like we do yeah you will love it P for me do you gotta pee paint the Roses ah we've talked about this game but not a ton paint the Roses is a deduction game where you are playing out acrylic hexagonal tiles you're trying to match colors or patterns or a combination of those two things yeah so you're placing out little cubes to identify of any of the surrounding tiles match the pattern that you have it's a Cooperative social deduction game where you're trying to outrun the queen who is trying to cut your head off it is extremely difficult and it's a beautiful game this is one of those games that you're always thinking about after you play you're like oh I gotta play it again okay next up is q and for my Q game I have selected quest for El Dorado this is just like a classic racing game pure racing game deck builder intro type of game and it's just easy but it's still fun so basically you are building out your deck with different types of terrain cards and then there's other kinds of cards you're playing them down and if you play down the machete card then you get to run through the grasslands if you play down a boat card or a paddle or whatever it is you get to move through the water sections and basically you are just trying to be the first person to get to the end we haven't played this enough I don't think because like when we play it we're like oh it's you know it's kind of basic but like it is I think with more players it gets super mean because you can block people off because you have to be able to pay the train types in order to move and there's like the whole map is like like let's say someone's like banking on going through the city in order to get through a section they have to have coins and if you block off that section they don't have the cards to go around it can be super mean but super fun yeah it's a Classics that's quest for El Dorado R I have return to Dark Tower because there's no way I wasn't adding a big grandiose game to this list return to Dark Tower is a scenario app driven battle game battler you have this massive toy in the middle of the table that has so many batteries in it and it lights up and it spits out skulls onto the board which is amazing the scenario has objectives that you're trying to complete like we played one uh with some wolves and it's all driven by an app it's super immersive the app is so well done it's a really cool experience I think that's the best way this is a really cool experience of a game to play so my S game that I picked is an uve because everybody's nice so this is a tile placement game that is part of like a bit of a series so there's like sagani there's framework and there is novaluna and essentially what you're doing is you're building out like Pathways of elements or magic elements yes you're basically building out a grid and if those colors point to a different tile of that same color type you then are able to complete that tile put into Pips on it and score the victory points yes so like it doesn't matter if the tile's here but if it points blue to the top right and then you are able to put a blue up in the top right that will complete that yes that part as long as it the arrows pointing in the right direction and then you get to flip it over and there's like a monster with points on it my tea there were so many options what I've chosen thurn and taxis turns axes a game Jamie I don't think likes very much I don't understand turning taxis is a root building game that I don't fully understand yet I've only played it on BGA we do have a copy it is a root building game where basically you're going to have City cards and a bunch of roads that you need to connect these cities to so on your turn you can basically either draw a city card play a city card depending on your ability you might be able to do both and you're just trying to build up routes in order to score victory points yeah my you I have picked now this is a game they did last year with my brother Zach and it is a three player minimum game it's a very interesting and very unique game where you have your little people and you're moving them around it's like a spiral board it's like a spiral board and you are trying to get to the end get to the end without dying but there's certain things that will happen the monster that yeah there's a monster there's different things that will trigger based on what the other players are doing there's definitely a mean elements super mean I believe we had this on a board game weekend so you can watch us kind of play it but it was so good it is it gets cropped on a little bit of things yeah I think a lot of people don't know why I I find really it's really unique it's really interesting it's fun it's it's silly and it's super mean yeah because like the monster can like take a swipe at certain areas and like knock you off the board and stuff yeah you're just like my next one we have talked a ton about and I don't apologize for it because I'll take any chance to talk about it and that is vast and I haven't picked either of them so there is a vast Crystal Caverns or vast mysterious manner we've only played Crystal Caverns Caverns Caverns we haven't played mysterious manner but I do want to play mysterious manner ASAP it's as asymmetrical I'm speaking from Crystal crack Craver and experience here not in serious manner but I'm assuming mysterious manner plays the same way yeah I think so it's asymmetry in his purest form that's it you're attacking one other person the sole objective that each player has is to defeat another person that's it that's the game I mean if you don't like mean games probably one to avoid can you tell that we like given the objective is literally to defeat another person okay my w is a new game from button shy as if I was going to have a list of little button shy game and that is called wild Tales a pirate Legacy this is a solo technically you can play it Co-op but I think it's probably best solo it is a 18 card Legacy game where you are playing as pirates and you're going on different missions to defeat objectives so that you can defeat certain Rebels or villains or bad guys and then you're progressing I think I'm on chapter four now and it has just been such a delightful experience it is definitely challenging enough for something that I want for a solo game wild Tales I'm not gonna say anything more about it because obviously it's a bit of a legacy game I had X and I haven't played any X Games that I could think of so I chose ziya Legends of a drift system which is a game I desperately want to play but do not want to buy because I do not want to Fork over that kind of cash I have why and for my Y game I picked Yak because I think that's the only Y game I've ever played but it's also a very cute game it's like a resource Gathering and then you're building out a structure You're Building like not a temple like a little Temple and there it's like a toy this game so there are different Yaks and they're pulling these wagons that have resources and every turn they're going to move so you're either exchanging with those resources taking some resources putting them in the middle in order to gain stones in order to build your strengths because they're all different colors and you have to build a certain pattern of stone colors yeah in your temple exactly it's so cute this is a great game to play with kids this is one of those games you get on the table to kind of get people to be like wow like what is that what is that game yeah that is yeah it's I had said yeah Z I've played no I know I've played no Z games ah zombie side but I wasn't gonna fix homicide I picked a Zorro the dice game it's a game we played forever ago with Zach Jamie's brother and it is really just a dice roller where you're trying to get sets uh of certain icons in order to defeat other players you're like triggering different abilities there's like abilities that you can do and objectives that you can complete and you're basically just doing that by Rolling dice there are there is a dice manipulation element to this I'm I did enjoy it it's just we don't own it and haven't played it since but we don't play a lot of Zed games don't play I I was like Zoo Loretto I haven't played that no zombie side everyone talks about zombicide that is the entire list with some game recommendations games we have played and all that good stuff from A to Z now I would love to know down below what are some games that you would recommend from the alphabet we would love to know if you're interested in buying board games like any of the 26 one we just played you just literally are just playing your tiles putting your meeple on like there's like roads we hated it on BGA we got crashed episode well I prefer to carcassone [Music]
