Description

In a far-distant future, humans no longer inhabit Earth. The cause of their disappearance (or perhaps their demise) is unknown, but their absence left a void ready to be filled by another sentient species.

Over the span of untold generations, one species of the humble honeybee evolved to fill that void. They grew in size and intelligence to become a highly advanced society. They call themselves Mellifera, and they have made substantial technological advances in addition to the technology they adapted from human ruins, up to and including space travel.

In Apiary, each player controls one of twenty unique factions. Your faction starts the game with a hive, a few resources, and worker bees. A worker-placement, hive-building challenge awaits you: explore planets, gather resources, develop technologies, and create carvings to demonstrate your faction's strengths (measured in victory points) over one year's Flow. However, the Dearth quickly approaches, and your workers can take only a few actions before they must hibernate! Can you thrive or merely survive?

Quotes (from this video)
  • It was great. I was really impressed. Um and I love the look of it. So, I really I really had a great time.
  • It's this dystopian game where you lose your your workers if they get too intelligent. Um but it's all bright and colorful and cheery. And so Exactly. it's got this interesting disconnect um that makes me so happy.
  • I adore Fin Span.
  • It's actually probably my favorite of the three.
  • It falls into that category of like a weeknight game where we can play a game in 45 minutes or so.
  • people have used the word streamlined. I do think that is an accurate descriptor of Fin Fin Span compared to Wing and Worm.
  • I I just think it's a really thoughtful experience where you're making good choices with beautiful art in a beautiful setting where you're diving down, right? So the the boards are vertical instead of horizontal. So the thematics are really great.
  • My favorite is Ark Nova and that spot will always probably remain Ark Nova.
  • The mechanism of the the cards actions and how that changes.
  • It's hard to name. I mean there's we're we feel very blessed to be here and um frankly the best part is my co-workers. I think you would probably say that. Yeah. We really have an amazing team and um we really enjoy and appreciate each other.
  • I could not believe those buildings. Both the landmarks and the income buildings. They're so detailed and the texture is perfect, the finish. I mean, they're fully painted.
  • The AI of Amazon I think is probably the worst cuz it's usually the AI that goes through and screws something up because they send it out to like fix a listing fix a listings in some way and then it messes something up. Um and then try to talk to their AI. It's just like beating your head on a wall.

Quotes (from this video)
  • On the live cast a couple days ago, Jamie mentioned that in 2 weeks he was going to start talking about the Scythe versus Expedition standalone game / expansion for both of those.
  • The Scythe versus Expeditions and the 30-minute Wingspan one are both listed as Gen Con events.
  • So, if you want to play Stonemaier games at Gen Con, you can kind of see here, there are some Wingspan games, new Sharks and Reefs, and the Scythe versus Expeditions.
  • The summer release in the mini expansion, so that's going to be 21 superhero and supervillain cards in the pack. So, you'll have three of them to choose from instead of two.
  • It is on Board Game Arena, if you didn't already know.
  • So, always fun when you get a new Gloomhaven newsletter if you're into the challenges.
  • I love Gloomhaven.
  • It was my favorite game last year cuz I love story building, but man, oof.
  • It I don't always get to the table as I feel like it's just such a time commitment.
  • So, obviously, Forgotten Circles and Fins and Fish are already here.
  • Jaws of the Lion versus versus expeditions is Q3.
  • Bones is supposed to be here in Q4. It is currently in components, it says here.
  • And then Code Name Deep is supposed to be quarter one of next year. Not sure what that is, but that is in the graphic design.

  • So, I was like, okay, Thunder Road is like full. That was easy. I guess I didn't need voting for that one.
  • To me, it's more it's much more important if I feel like I played well.
  • Diva wide receiver or DWR for short is a player that literally refuses to cooperate in any way and has to be the center of attention regardless of it if what they're doing is in best interest of the team.
  • It's impossible to game design around this issue where the quarterback issue has many games of built-in mechanisms to address it.
  • The munchkin. This is almost the munchkin.
  • People need to chill out about the number of nature themed games being released
  • I will say I'm getting tired of there's two parts of nature games I'm tired of. One is the obvious I'm trying to be Wingspan. I really dislike that.
  • This is cyclical and I think that right now nature themed games are very hot.
  • That was the people need to stop making dual layer boards. Got 50 hard disagrees.
  • Hexes are good sci-fi and only belong in science fiction.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Bumping and retrieval choices — Action spaces can be bumped, returning the bumped worker to the owner or placing it in a landing area. When retrieving, you must retrieve all non-active workers, split them into four-strength and the rest, and activate farm incomes or hibernate etc.
  • Carve and end-game objectives — Carve actions let you select carving tiles costing honey to build, aiming to unlock powerful end-game objectives; empty carving spaces are not replenished.
  • Dance/Conversion system — Advanced actions include dance tiles chosen via a conversion system; players may teach one dance per game, creating a new conversion option available to all players; teaching a dance grants Queen's favor when opponents use it.
  • Hibernation and comb scoring — Strength-four workers have special rules and can trigger hibernation; the hibernation comb is evaluated for end-game majorities, affecting final scoring.
  • Hive expansion via frames and tile types — Two-strength actions buy frames to place on the hive, expanding storage and space; frames can unlock further effects and may upgrade your faction tile when used with a four-strength worker.
  • Resource Management — There are five resource types; you can store unlimited resources during your turn but must store them by type in hive spaces by end of turn; discarding forced resources increases Queen's favor.
  • Resource storage and management — There are five resource types; you can store unlimited resources during your turn but must store them by type in hive spaces by end of turn; discarding forced resources increases Queen's favor.
  • Seed cards and research — Research lets you draw seed cards equal to worker strength; you may discard seed cards for basic resources, play them for immediate actions, or plant seeds to unlock end-game objectives; seeds require slots and can be expanded via frames.
  • Two-slot worker action placement — On your turn you place a worker on an action space; if the space is occupied you push the existing worker to the next slot, and if both slots are full, the second is bumped. The main action strength equals the sum of the strengths in the two slots.
  • Worker Placement — On your turn you place a worker on an action space; if the space is occupied you push the existing worker to the next slot, and if both slots are full, the second is bumped. The main action strength equals the sum of the strengths in the two slots.

  • The end at the end of the day, it's more about the social experience and the social experience was so fun, so enjoyable, and so connected that as much as it would have been great to play a board game, it was like we didn't miss it.
  • The Stonemaier Games logo with little cat ears.

Pros
  • Core loop is pretty strong.
  • Pathways to get there are cool and novel.
  • Climbing guild ladders and access to one-time purchasable permanent upgrades are cool levers.
  • Artifacts are randomized from 20 different types, presenting interesting and varying combos.
  • The quirks, play, artifacts, and upgrades are quite a lot.
  • Captures imagination and taps into a joy of strong engine-building fundamentals.
  • Commitment to doing weird, ambitious mechanics.
  • Wide array of small but potent personal player powers.
  • Objective point cards are endearing.
  • Endearing techno-fantasy aesthetic.
Cons
  • Big mechanical swings can be hit or miss.
  • Some games by the studio just don't work for the reviewer.
  • Even games listed as examples are weird and have vocal detractors.
  • Set up is pretty fussy.
  • Gameplay has regimented sections, and it's easy to forget steps.
  • There's a good handful of stuff that happens just because the rules needed to happen in a particular way that aren't necessarily instinctive.
  • Requires you to really sweat the details.
  • The player grid placement system is less than elegant and not how the rules are written.
  • Fundamentally going to make or break your enjoyment.
Thematic elements

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Bag Building — Altiara is a bag-building dice game.
  • Dice Rolling — You start with a set of dice based on the faction card, from which you typically draw, roll, and use five each turn
  • Engine Building — strong but more rudimentary engine-building fundamentals
  • Set Collection — objective point cards. These you get throughout the game and you can accrue them. You could get a bunch of them and you don't have to fulfill them, but they give you ways of steering your strategy to fulfill, and each one is worth a point if completed at the end.
  • Worker Placement — Sort of simultaneous secret drafty worker placement

  • But the fact that they keep on swinging the big themes, the big productions, the big mechanical ideas, it keeps me interested.
  • The pathways that you use to get there they are cool, novel even.
  • But that set up alone, even apart from the gameplay, the different randomized artifact cards, the semi-randomized tiered guild cards for each round, it is pretty fussy.
  • this one requires you to really sweat the details for an otherwise strategically lighter endeavor.
  • And found ourselves enjoying it in spite of and in some ways because of that weirdness.

  • seed cards and seeds — Seed cards are drawn via research and can be planted under the hive to unlock scoring and storage capacity.
  • tile drafting and placement — Tiles such as planet tiles, carvings, farms, recruits, and developments are purchased with resources and placed on the hive, providing immediate and future effects.

Quotes (from this video)
  • The one thing I've realized from playing on board game arena is that I'm out of practice on scoring games. So I would say to game developers, make sure scoring is streamlined and not too convoluted.
  • Musical immersion and satisfying feedback for interacting with the game. Fun game vs fun video game actions may not even have any actual utility, but they still feel good.
  • Don't forget to design catchup mechanisms. The way Mario Kart World weighs its items based on racer position is such an enjoyable simple catch-up mechanism.
  • Video games reward you for completing tough challenges with meaningful unlocks. Trek 12 is my favorite example of this.
  • Video games stay fresh through patches, updates, and community content.
  • Video games let you tailor the challenge to your comfort zone from casual mode to insane mode.
  • Video games excel at simultaneous engagement. Everyone's playing all the time. Imagine Mario Kart where each player races one at a time instead of all at the same time.
  • There are few things that are more intimidating than a 20 plus page rule book. Video games drop you into the action quickly and teach you as you play.
  • Board games often withhold feedback until the final score tally. Video games give you constant feedback loops. Mid-game checkpoints and milestones could help players better understand how they're doing.
  • I am much more of a tabletop game player than a digital game player. But I over the last few years, especially in researching Vantage, I researched a lot of video games.
