Description

Cascadia is a puzzly tile-laying and token-drafting game featuring the habitats and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest.

In the game, you take turns building out your own terrain area and populating it with wildlife. You start with three hexagonal habitat tiles (with the five types of habitat in the game), and on a turn you choose a new habitat tile that's paired with a wildlife token, then place that tile next to your other ones and place the wildlife token on an appropriate habitat. (Each tile depicts 1-3 types of wildlife from the five types in the game, and you can place at most one tile on a habitat.) Four tiles are on display, with each tile being paired at random with a wildlife token, so you must make the best of what's available — unless you have a nature token to spend so that you can pick your choice of each item.

Ideally you can place habitat tiles to create matching terrain that reduces fragmentation and creates wildlife corridors, mostly because you score for the largest area of each type of habitat at game's end, with a bonus if your group is larger than each other player's. At the same time, you want to place wildlife tokens so that you can maximize the number of points scored by them, with the wildlife goals being determined at random by one of the four scoring cards for each type of wildlife. Maybe hawks want to be separate from other hawks, while foxes want lots of different animals surrounding them and bears want to be in pairs. Can you make it happen?

  • I understand the game being like very much you're playing the person on your right and you're playing the person on your left. You're taking the role of like the good and the bad in this game to uh go on against the opposite on the right and the opposite on the left and I think there's a lot of interactions that go on, a lot of communication that will have to happen around the table to make sure that the turns are flowing.
  • I'm a huge fan of Sashi and Sashi and they will be debuting to move Railway Porters at UKGE.
  • It is by Taiki Shinzawa and it's a trick taking game where every player has a condition that they must follow in their trick taking. But every condition is different.

  • 2021 was a really good year. There's some real big bangers that came out this year, some of our favorite games.
  • So, we're going to go ahead and talk about our top 10 games from 2021.
  • Really for us, the entire Imperium line, there's Imperium Classics and Imperium Legends, which came out uh around this time, and then Imperium Horizons. And all these games are are cross-co compatible.
  • I think that's what keeps this game really fun for us is like with between all three versions of the game, I don't know, there's probably like 40 civilizations now and they all have their own kind of vibe.
  • Arc Nova is a masterpiece. It's just what it is.
  • this game took the world by storm and just has not let up.
  • it's basically this big engine builder.
  • This is kind of a game that's got like a whole bunch of different mechanics.
  • not every game needs to do something new. Like not every game needs to think of a new mechanic or a new this or a new that. You can take things that exist already in board games or in other board games or in the general board game industry and just put them into a really really good game.
  • Arnova is nothing new. Absolutely nothing new. But it does it in such a good way that it's become this number two game of all time. I think eventually probably going to be number one.
  • Arnova is one of my favorite games of all time. It's incredible. I love it so much and it had to be number one on this list.
  • what games stand the test of time? Uh Arknova obviously definitely does that. That's a clear number one for us.
  • But, let us know what are your favorite games from 2021. Which things did you buy back then or discovered after the fact that you are still playing just as much today?

Quotes (from this video)
  • I really liked how uh bombastic the cards get in allowing you to do, you know, things on your own board and how to explore it.
  • Uh especially with the military aspect and, you know, creating or increasing the military might that you have to um impose on other opponents and when these battles really made our games uh come down to these in addition to uh the just straight-up deck building and um you know, playing cards from your hands and worker placement aspects that has a lot of good mechanisms that I enjoy.
  • This game I really enjoyed for the theme. I like the the thematic story and the arc of this game where the plague gets pretty bad uh during the game, uh but then slowly as you start to unders- or, you know, uh combat the disease, you start to uh rely less and less on taking out the plague and more and more coming back to repopulate Messina.
  • it's still a game that is is tough for me to play sometimes just because um you know, I if I think I know what is going on with the strategy of this game and and and you know, the the more that I have to learn from it and so it kind of deterred me from playing it more
  • But yeah, uh as as bland as it looks, it's actually really fun order fulfillment game.
  • Um it's not as deep or complex as Magic or Hearthstone or some of the other card games are, but it probably will get to that point at some at some point.
  • I wish that the meta game was more diverse. It hasn't been so since the start of the game.
  • And Wingspan for me, while it's a masterpiece of of a design um in my opinion, I really was really drawn to all of the birds and the individuality of these cards.
  • It does take a while to play, I think if you're playing with new people, which was kind of a deterrent for me for bringing this game out more often.
  • So, this is one of the latest Uwe Rosenberg games back in 2022, one of my favorite games. One for the solo version of this game. I think that is the peak way to play this game.
  • And so I I hold it in high esteem.

  • Don't do that. Oh my god. I mean, if I if I find out you're going to teach it by regurgitating the rule book verbatim, and I know this before we sit down, I'm leaving.
  • Pick your players wisely.
  • Seriously, if you feel you need to teach it by reading the rule book for baton, then you haven't learned the game well enough yourself.
  • Don't try to teach me a strategy for how to win it, though. I saw the rules and I thought, well, okay, what happens if I focus more on guests rather than care about the barrels or something?
  • The more you do it and the more you learn from the mistakes, the better a teacher you'll be.

Quotes (from this video)
  • One of the big new things is we are building up building our environments in 3D.
  • It is such a tricky and satisfying puzzle.
  • Add on top of that that if you've played flatout games before then you'll know like the solo modes, the achievements, the scenarios. There is so much baked up on top of this.
  • If you are a fan of Cascadia especially, and you've played it a load and you're like, where can we go next? We can go up.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Thanks for joining us for another Tantrum House crowdfunding companion.
  • This is a one to four player standalone tile laying game that takes about 30 to 45 minutes to play.
  • The whole enjoyment of the game is where can this tile and this animal best go together to match up and score me points at the end of the game.
  • If you enjoyed the original Cascadia, then obviously this version of it is going to take it to new heights as you're able to stack those tiles up.
  • I personally found it incredibly challenging to try to figure out what the best way was to build up. I always wanted to tend to build out and so there's definitely a different mental uh angle that you got to come at it with with the freedom to be able to put tiles on top of each other.

Pros
  • Easy to teach and play.
  • Plays quickly.
  • Simultaneous play reduces downtime.
  • The rule that un-won cubes stay on the board is fantastic and essential.
  • The ability to increase dice count and pip total is a neat driver.
  • Card play offers good choices between building new cards or upgrading existing ones.
  • Mechanics feel integrated and not overwhelming.
  • Offers good replayability with different tiles and advanced options.
  • Solidly mid-weight game that plays in a reasonable amount of time.
  • The feeling of not being able to use all your dice is interesting.
  • The mechanic of using leftover resources to build towards future wins is great.
Cons
  • Rulebook could be better.
  • Symbols on gears are not always clear.
  • Money tokens are poorly designed (same colors for different values, inconsistent sizes).
  • The money being victory points can make spending feel difficult.
  • Scaling to 5 or 6 players might lead to slower games and a feeling of not winning anything on a turn.
  • Artwork is described as 'meh' or 'fine', not a favorite for some.
Thematic elements
  • Steam gears
Comparison games

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area Majority — Players allocate dice to different spots, and the player with the most cubes in a spot wins it and takes the associated action.
  • Auction — Mentioned as a secondary style of game, likely referring to the dice allocation for spots.
  • card drafting / hand management — Players start with building cards and can acquire more, choosing to build new ones or upgrade existing ones for increased points or efficiency.
  • Dice allocation — Players secretly allocate their dice, with the total pip value influencing placement, and can increase the number of dice and maximum pip total they can use.
  • Resource Management — Players collect and spend resources (green, yellow, pink) to build cards and take other actions.
  • Set Collection — Some building cards provide points based on the number of spots a player controls.
  • Simultaneous action selection — Players allocate their dice simultaneously behind a shield, which speeds up gameplay and reduces downtime.
  • Tile Laying / Revealing — New location tiles are revealed each round, expanding the game board and introducing new action spots.

Quotes (from this video)
  • It's not the most thematic game, Tom.
  • The people who are in the bottom get to take the action of that spot.
  • And in this game, money is points.
  • That's the worst part of the game production wise by far because not only is it not great the actual material the cardboard is just cardboard.
  • But this is a game that would do great with chips.
  • The rule that if you don't win, your stuff stays there for a future round. That's fantastic. I think if that rule wasn't there, the game would be not good.
  • My favorite part is what you mentioned, which is getting more dice and and manipulating the number of pips you have access to.
  • I've never seen anything quite like that before and I just think that that really is a neat driver of this mayor majority game.
  • It's a it's a really solidly middle weight game that plays in a reasonable amount of time.
  • The mechanics are so great.
  • I'm actually coming in at 8.5 on this. I enjoy this a lot.

Pros
  • Upgrades and powers provide fun and variability.
  • Clever solo mode with unique characters and ways to spend points.
  • High variety in action tiles changes strategy and resource value.
  • Satisfying economic engine building with cards.
  • Unique and satisfying hidden worker placement/area majority mechanic.
  • Simultaneous play makes the game quick.
  • Works well in solo play.
  • Good combination of elements from quick euros, worker placement, economic, and area majority games.
Cons
  • Solo mode is a 'beat your own score' mode.
  • Variety in building cards is not as great as it seems, boiling down to resource conversion or area majority bonuses.
  • Luck of the draw with cards can be a big factor, especially if cards don't combo or use unavailable resources.
  • Can feel random and punishing if consistently beaten out in area majority.
  • Can lead to similar engine building strategies each game.
  • Randomness creeps up, especially with card draw luck.
Thematic elements
  • economic
Comparison games

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Area Majority — Players try to get cubes onto different action tiles to win area majority.
  • hidden worker placement — Behind a screen, players dial in which location is going to get how many workers before revealing.
  • Set Collection — Cards with the same icon can be upgraded instead of playing a new card.
  • Tableau Building — Players play building cards to generate income.
  • Worker Placement — A basic worker placement mechanic is used, with upgrades to how many cubes can be placed and more dice to increase flexibility.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And whoever gets the most money by the end of the game wins.
  • So, the big ones for the basic worker placement area majority mechanic, you can upgrade how many cubes you can put out every round and get more dice to increase the flexibility of how you place those cubes.
  • Now, the big caveat for the solo before I get into all the good stuff is that it is basically a beat your own score mode.
  • So, I really like the variety in the action tiles and how it changes up the game's economy play to play.
  • So, this is definitely a lot of fun. As the game plays, you feel like you're building up a huge economic empire, and the money will just come rolling in.
  • This is great. It's the most unique thing in the game.
  • So, I find this very quick, very satisfying.
  • It does mean that the game is almost completely simultaneous in play, so even with six players, it is a breeze to get through.
  • Now, of course, you might not need it as much for next round, or they might just come in and beat you again.
  • So, overall, you might want to check out Campania if you like quick playing euros.
